Judith is what I imagine all grandmas look and cook like, perfect. My grandma does the same hand gestures too lmao
I cook my grits in water and a little bit of carnation milk. The milk immediately breaks down the grittiness, making them so smooth and creamy. I sprinkle a taste of salt in them and i butter them when done. Not gonna lie but I absolutely love sweet and salty grits also but i dont add sugar in them bc not everyone likes sweet grits especially if we have waffles and pancakes too.
Just made grits like this for my girlfriend as I didn’t really know what I was doing and all I can say is thank you lol it came out great.
That's the perfect recipe, I add the milk at the very end. Salt, pepper, and butter with some scallions that's all you need. Up north all I can get are cheese grits, not the same.

Butter and greens is all you need on grits, its balanced perfectly. I think the right person won. I had grits with shrimp once tho, and it was one of the best thing I've ever eaten. I think about those grits out of the blue sometimes, and it was like 5 years ago, lol.

I'm a southerner and still here in the south... and grits for me are stone ground and cooked a long time with water/salt then add a bit of milk or cream to make them creamy.
As they are about to finish you sprinkle in a little garlic powder and stir in butter and then top 'em with a generous handful of grated cheddar cheese and some green onions..... YUM!

I'm from SC, and broth is used sometimes along with milk or cream (although I grew up with the basic/foundational water, salt, pepper, butter, paprika). I prefer stoneground grits and these take their time to cook. When doing cheese grits, I prefer sharp cheddar though my people use all kinds of combinations. There are places where you can get freshly ground stoneground grits also. Did ya'll catch them saying grit? It's always grits with a "S" when talking about the food.

My fam on both sides are from the south (Texas and Louisiana) and grits are always made with butter, pepper, salt, half and half, cheese (usually pepper Jack or cheddar), garlic powder, cayenne, and some crumbled bacon bits or smoked ham bits. They used lard about 2 generations ago but moved away from that to butter. It’s definitely not healthy but It tastes amazing with some eggs.

@@Sunshine4 She used chicken broth, not added salt (unless the broth was seasoned), and had smoked turkey meat as a topping

Lord have mercy....I grew up with my Granny and great-granny eating the best homecooking that was simply "normal" everyday cooking! For us in southeastern North Carolina, grits were cooked in a very worn-in boiling pot and it was just salt, pepper and butter...but the magic happened with the "juicy fried egg" (fried over easy) You smush up the juicy fried egg into the bowl of grits giving it a yellowish color....season to your liking with even more butter and salt! Thats what Great-Granny called "good ol poor folks eating" and I raised my daughter on the same thing
