- While it may not be quite as #ultralight as a ZPacks Duplex backpacking tent, the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 2 is an outstanding bargain. Featuring room for 2 people in a slightly-more-than-2-pound package and a sub $100 price tag, it's hard to go wrong.

I've been using this tent for better part of a year and it has been great. Just last weekend my son and I (we have 2 of these tents) spent 7-8 hours in the pouring rain and not a single leak. The fly never wetted out and the stitching is top rate. We're taking this tent on our section hike of the AT. Thanks for the detailed video

It's not a copy of the Zpacks Duplex. There were and are other tents with this shape - Hilleberg Keb was there in 1971 and it wasn't the first too. Why are so many people believin Zpacks invented the A-frame tent? + Duplex is single walled, Lanshan is double walled. SMD Haven + Haven net tent are closer to Lanshan 2, to pick just one
Sibelius Johannes I bought one because it’s a budget version of the duplex. Whether zpacks invented that design or not is irrelevant. The duplex is super popular and this version is as close as you can get on a budget.

Eek I think I spoke too soon. It’s like my bathtub is more narrow than the roof of my tent. So the bathtub is pulled right by the poles, but the roof and sides of tent are flimsy.

This was a GREAT review! Thank you! I ordered one from AliExpress, set it up a few days ago. Glad I also ordered the footprint for it, the footprint works perfect. The stakes are definitely too short, so will be using the larger MSR Groundhogs. I knew all of that was necessary thanks to Walkers World doing his review a couple months ago. I especially appreciated your trekking pole tips! Very helpful since the tent doesn't come with instructions. I will live with a smaller door for 1/6th the price as well! Also, don't be afraid of AliExpress. I've ordered several items through their website and have yet to receive back alley drugs! LOL! Thanks for taking the time to do this review!

I ordered the 2018 Flame's Greed Lanshan. I didn't know they sold a footprint. Do you really need one or can you just use some plastic?
You can use plastic or Tyvek. However, the footprint ($13) made specifically for the Lanshan has the reinforced corners with loops. While setting up the tent, you simply string the cords from the tent through the loops of the footprint and it keeps the footprint in place. If you just use plastic, it may not stay in place under the tent floor. BTW you are going to love this tent. I have 8 tents, and this one does everything I have been searching for!
Also, the stakes that come with it are like mini-groundhogs. Too small. I just spent three days in the Loess Hills in Iowa with the Lanshan and was so glad I borrowed my son's MSR Groundhogs. The wind was incredible this past weekend in those hills, 35 mph gusts, and the Lanshan with the MSR Groundhogs felt like a fortress. No issues at all. But I feel the mini stakes that come with it would have pulled out of that loose soil in a heartbeat.

This is probably one of the cheapest tent types to manufacture. It is pretty amusing why some of these tents cost so much.

Yes it does look like that Meir tent is identical and while it’s a few bucks more, it’ll save you the 3 week shipping. I might order another for my kids, it’s hard to beat for the price.

I've got the Duplex, which I love, but this looks like a great alternative! One to look at for my kids! One great feature is the double wall - I bet there is no condensation on the inside (though I have not had that issue so far with the Duplex). Enjoyed the video. Happy hiking!

Great tent. I've had mine for 6 months but have only had one weekend in it. I'm 6'2" and this tent is borderline too small for me, even sleeping alone on the diagonal. I woke up in the morning with my head touching one end of the tent and the foot of my sleeping bag pressing against the other end of the tent and rain fly. It was a foggy raining night and the foot of my down bag was a little wet on the surface. I'm attempting to modify the tent by lengthening the cords that attach the rain fly at each attachment point (8 of them) so the fly rides 6 inches above the tent instead of 2-3 inches. I think then my feet wont press against the rain fly. I really like this tent, but wish it was 6 inches or so longer. Thanks for your detailed review.
Good to hear your thoughts. I'm 6'5". Did a tonne of research on this tent but didn't purchase due to the length. Went with the comparably priced Naturehike taga 2, which fits me, just.
could it have been the side tie outs? They are not sealed and will leak if subjected to constant rain. Mine did.

Yeah that's my concern at 6ft1... Most of these Chinese copies are on the small side. I've got a fly creek copy that is well made but my head must be touching the door to avoid a wet bag at my feet. Rei are the value option for decent sizing I think but are like double the cost... I just caught a review of the taijin I think that looks roomier...

You did a really great job showing the entire tent, including it's set up and I really appreciate that. Very well done! I do wish you'd have sprayed it with a hose or left it out in the rain to test how waterproof it is. Have you used it? Have you noticed any leaks or any other problems? Looking for something lighter than my kelty 2

FYI after 8+ hrs of rain, the side tie-outs DID leak on me, not much but it did leak and leach into the inner. Good call sealing them yourself. I did not have any condensation problems either, even with a morning fog.
Also TBH, I cannot find a flaw with this tent other than that. I think it is easily a $350 tent if you put BA or MSR on the side.
Just got mine. Pitched in backyard and let it get rained on for about 4 hours. Came back to 3 small leaks - one leak at the seam of each of the mesh pockets (head and foot), and one near one of the doors - couldn't figure out where that came from. I guess I'm gonna grab some Silnet and slather it on those two sections of seams, tape and all. Otherwise, bone dry and solid.
Quick question for you, since you've used it: With the nylon part of the bathtub floor only being a couple inches tall, does it seem drafty inside? My intuition is the bathtub floor should be at least as tall as the top of your sleeping bag with you in it, but maybe not.. Does seem like the ventilation is good, so maybe avoiding condensation issues is more important that draftiness. Your thoughts?
@@hrmIwonder I've used the tent now on several trips and agree with your assessment... It's more important to get that airflow. I've not know it to be too drafty, and the condensation issue is non existent. HTH.

Grandeur Nature Hi. That bottle was just a cheap option off of Amazon. There is a wide variety at wildly different prices and I picked up one of the cheaper ones. I don’t actually use that for backpacking anymore but it is a nice bottle for general use.

It's not a copy of the Zpacks Duplex. Its a double wall silnylon tent. It is very different from the Zpacks single wall dyneema tent even if it looks similar. It is a modified copy of the SMD Haven Tarptent with the net inner tent. One would chose either tent for their variety of differences.
Yes, I know, but the Duplex is the best-known benchmark for this style of tent (dual trekking pole, dual entry, vestibules, 2 person, etc) and ultimately the overall usage is the same between this and the Duplex, hence the comparison. They do look and function extremely similar in practice, though to a more learned observer there are clearly major structural differences.
right, the benefit being condensation does not form on the inside, and you can pack up your kit and dismantle the tent from the inside and stay dry until you finally take down the fly. And of course you can buy 6 for the price of one duplex and have your five other lanshans waiting if and when they ever fail ;) Also FYI, I found that if I stake the 4 corners out first and then put the poles in at around 115cm and stake the pole guys I get a nice taut pitch every time. Once all 6 are staked I raise the poles to 120cm-ish and then stake the side guy points. Doing it this way I have only had to make minor adjustments on the four corners to equalize the tension.
tnprime - thanks for the info, I just bought one but haven't taken it out yet, I also believe you can use the tent and fly separately, which also distinguishes it from a Duplex.
you can use the two components separately. They provide two pieces of blue cord for this purpose. In the hot summer it would be nice to pitch just the net tent and still keep the bugs out.
I just bought the new Lanshan Flame's Creed. Can't wait to get it. It is just insane to spend 700 bucks on a Zpacks Double when esentially this tent does the same thing. The only issue I've read is you need to seal a few areas but otherwise really great tents. I really do hope these little companies start taking business away from the bigger UL companies. Because in the end A Rolex and Casio do the same thing. Still tells the time. Good review man.
thank you for review. I encountered the price issue which will skyrocket if you import tent from US to EU, so i just screened some tents on Ali. Can you tell me if you tested it in strong winds / heavy rain? What about condensation, does the inner mesh hold from dripping to inside? How strong are these aluminium pegs? They wont bend easily on rocky soil (alpine zone) you think ? Thank you very much for your answer!

I did hear from someone that shaved off about 125g by changing lines to slightly shorter, lighter weight cordage
Great review... got mine a week ago. Be prepared for disgruntled duplex owners who are out $600 dollars to sling nasty comments... I'm a life long backpacker and this is a great tent. Funny Bigfoot, Darwin, Dixie and all the other professional vlogers won't even mention this tent. I guess Ali Express doesn't give kickbacks
The long-term reliability if the main unknown I think. Many people have put thousands of miles on the Zpacks (and similar) tents with reliable results but no one has done the same on these yet. There is a fellow on Reddit using the Lanshan on a thru-hike right now, so time will tell!
if this tent failed on a thru-hike you could have another tent, of any make, lying in wait with Fedex First Overnight delivery (that is before 10am arrival) postage for any place in the US and still save up to $450.00 over the duplex. The dyneema fabric is nice and light but it is over priced imo.
As for reliability, it's made from silnylon ....silnylon is probably the most time tested tent material in the outdoors...who else uses silnylon ...MSR, REI, Big Agnes, EMS...I'm confident with silnylon...
The disgruntles can be disgruntled all they want lol. I'm sure Zpacks makes a great tent but I'm really hoping they start losing business from us lower folk that can't afford their overpriced gear. Here is my thought...A Rolex and a Casio both do the same thing. In the end all it does is tell time. Lol. So basically i will trust the silnylon over Cuben. Its been around for years without any issues. I ordered the new 2018 Flames Greed Lanshan. Cant wait to get it.

I've used this tent for my last trekking trip in the Pyrenees and I actually regret to have bought it.
I can't leave a review on Aliexpress anymore, so I will just leave this info here :)
Pros: - lightweight and extra lines
Cons: - it doesn't have a footprint, the lower part of the tent is super, super thin and easy to break. You need to buy a footprint, which will add up to the weight. If you have an inflatable mattress, the plants (or basically anything) under the tent will easily go through the fabric and get to your matress and make a hole, or more.
- not enough stakes for keeping the tent standing and all lines in tension so the outer fabric doesn't touch the mosquito net.
- after using it with wind and rain, as soon as the outer tent touches the mosquito net, you get water inside, always.
- not having an internal structure and counting on the tension in the lines for the tent to stand, you're limited to setting it up on places with humid ground (to be able to stick the steaks in the ground properly) or grass, no rocky areas, no dry areas.
- yellow version - the colour tends to go out and become uneven after a couple of showers.
Hope this helps. And if anyone from Europe is planning to buy this tent, I can make you a good 2nd hand price and ship it from Spain, it's intact. I will give you some extra stakes too ;)
While it doesn't come with a footprint (most tents don't), 3F UL does make a footprint for it and you can easily make one from tyvek. Adding a footprint isn't adding that much weight. I don't know if your shipment didn't come with all the necessary stakes, but my tent definitely has enough stakes to stake out the tent and the guy lines. While I haven't used my tent in heavy winds, the first time I used it it rained for a good 8+ hours and the only entry points for the rain were the 2 points on the rain fly that he points out in the video. Even after the 8+ hours, moisture inside the tent was minimal and was fixed with a little seam sealer. I will agree that it can be a pain to set up if the ground is hard but it's not impossible.

Paul, great video! Quick question, I find that the ridgeline of the inner and outer tent touches despite my best effort to get a really taught setup. In fact, anything less than "max" tension between the poles along the ridgeline and even more surface touches and the condensation migrates onto the inner tent material. Do you see the same thing? I´ve been thinking about lengthening the cords connecting the inner and outer at the poles, just a few centimeters.
Tord Hoppe I have not had that happen in my pitches yet. Is your outer fly ridgeline nice and tight? I find that slightly angling the poles outward just a bit can help tighten up that ridge. I'd say on an average pitch the inner is always several centimeters away from touching and is only close right at the clips near the poles. I don't think there any harm in extending the cordage to give the inner a little more space between layers.

Would be interesting to see how many miles you can put on this before it breaks. At that price you could buy a new one 6 times over!
Unless it breaks in a dangerous storm when you're days out from the trailhead... At that kind of price it will probably be a low-grade fabric - unless the stress points are unusually well designed and executed it could be vulnerable in a wind. Personally, I'd only use a shelter like this below the treeline, where it should be just fine.

I love mine. Have you set up just the inner with the blue ropes? The poles are inverted and the "extra" red ropes attach to the inner. Love this tent!

Jose Angel Garcia Frediani You can absolutely get collapsible tent poles, in carbon or aluminum from a variety of sources. A quick google for 3 or 4 section tent poles should find a lot of choices. Just get that 48” height and it should work just fine!

MagnetPull At 6' 3" you'd probably be touching the netting a little if you use a thicker inflatable pad. There is still a few inches between the netting and the outer fly, but laying diagonally would give you a bit more space. All the UL tens tend to be designed around the 6' or less person it seems...

I just ordered mine about a week ago. Actually, I ended up having to call my bank to verify the purchase. I asked the rep from the bank if there were reported issues with the website and he said he wasn't aware of any. He said certain types of transactions (I'm assuming by country of origin, service used) they get flagged. He did not in any way warn against completing the purchase. Not a fail safe, but just a little more info.
That wasn't personally a concern, but there were just a number of tiny little "user experience" things that I wasn't used to that made it feel a little less certain of a process. In the end though, millions of people use that site every day and it's not a bad place to shop by any means, I was just being a bit humorous. :)
Mark Cummings if you're concerned about security, and we all should be, use a prepaid card. Only keep enough in it for each purchase. It's not linked to your bank or account so no fear of any fraudulent activity.
AliExpress is the Amazon and Ebay, etc. of Asia. Very safe and secure. I have ordered several items through AliExpress, it's not two day Walmart delivery, (and WalMart carries many of the same items from these manufacturers at twice the price!), but it's definitely worth waiting one or two weeks to save 50% on the exact same item. I'm in Illinois and have yet to not receive my order sooner than expected. Hope that eases your mind!
I like the review and have bought the Lanshan 2. I have a question though...why do you tie the 2 long guy ropes to the loops on the vent instead of the loops on the very top of the tent?
If you used the very top loop I think you’d “crush” the vent due to the angle of the line. You want to use the vent location to keep them open and also allow the door flaps to move around properly.
I never did figure out what the blue ropes are for. Best I can figure is that they serve as a clothesline inside the tent. Do you know the actual purpose?
I just got this but I'm keen to replace the stuff suck with something a bit higher quality and that will compress it more. what size of the sea to summit ultra sil compression sacks do you think would fit it whilst also compressing the size?

By your attention to detail, I feel you could do some mods: the pullouts don't need two line locs, the elastic pullout in each point you could just make it loop on the webbing so you don't need to go around again through the tent to pass them on the head of the pegs. But these are little details! (I will message here again when I recieve my Lanshan 1 :D, cheers

Out of all the mf'ers that did a review on this tent, this guy is actually the only one that shows this tent has to doors that opens widely, the others just acted like it only had one door.

Wilson Nguyen That one is the Thermarest Neoair Xlite. It is a very popular ultralight pad. I use the Nemo Tensor Wide ultralight pad now, which is a little heavier but more comfortable for me.
I have a Lanshan also and I love it!... but my fly is not sil-nylon... it is poly coated ripstop! it's an older model... Aliexpress had a choice of either and the Poly coated ripstop was a little cheaper but weighed more( added 6-8oz) I went with the ripstop because my experience with sil-nylon stretching/sagging in the middles especially when wet... the poly ripstop stays taut.. this tent is gold in the rain... the poly ripstop only came in blue and I haven't seen a poly ripstop fly in Aliexpress adds since
Ahh I just bought SMD lunar duo for $400+. Do you think that this could handle a thru hike? 2 of these tents maybe? I could buy 4 of these for the price of the SMD lunar duo. I dont know what to do. Help!
I do not know why this would not be able to handle a long backpacking trip. It is a decent tent.
Think the tent could be packed even smaller? I'm thinking about packing a quilt with the tent in the same stuff sack and strapping it atop of my pack. Thanks.
The compression stuff sack it comes with is barely big enough for the tent, I do not think you’d be able to get even the tiniest quilt in there. Better to keep a quilt in a dry sack at the bottom of your pack, to make sure it doesn’t have any chance of getting wet.

People who have added water repellant treatments to the stitching and the fly fabric report q satisfactory experience with the tent in the rain. Has anyone used the tent in strong (say Force 4 or so) wind? How did it stand up to that? And was it quiet or did the flapping keep you awake at night? And any product that is provide shelter/protection from inclement conditions should not be reviewed until the reviewer has actually used the product under severe if not extreme conditions. Otherwise, how can the review honestly appraise the product with respect to its intended use? Setting it up in your yard and spraying it with a hose doesn't come close to a thunderstorm in the Wind River Range.
amazon has the mier tent and it is exactly the same tent. literally made by lanshan. Its a $120.00 but you get it in two days instead of 44 days from aliexpress!
It is sold by www.hikeroutlet.com as well. This cheap tent have less condensation than Duplex, thank to double layer construction :)
However it is heavier and smaller inside.

Well, hard to say exactly but you might not have the poles long enough, or you aren't getting enough tension on the guy lines. Make sure that your poles are 48" before you start, and try to put it up in the sequence from the video. Once it's up and tensioned there is really no way the pole can/should slip out as the tension of the fabric and lines makes a pretty deep pocket that the pole sits in.
When I put mine up, the top ridge of the inner touches (or is very very close) to the outer sheet. Is there a knack to solving this? I’ve tried a couple of times at different pole heights.
Is it even a problem if there is very slight contact? I wonder what others have?
RICHARD Slater I don’t think that is a major issue. Since the tent is double wall, if by chance you got a little condensation on the inner surface it would most likely just drip down toward the lowest edge anyways. You’d need a massive amount of moisture to transfer from the inner fly to soak into the mesh and drip onto you, even if it was touching. Just make sure the clips that hold the mesh are positioned logically and I think all would be well.
@@xmetal280 Thanks! yeah it seemed to be fine when I used it in some light rain for the first time last weekend. One thing I did wonder about was that the door flaps pitch quite high off the ground... Is there any recommended technique to reduce this space? guess I just have to fiddle around and adjust my set up. Poles were at about 125cm
nice review z-packs is just too expensive for the everyday hiker- camper nice alternative at a great price.

The blue guylines are for when you're just pitching the inner (in good weather / no rain / flying biter season). Hth
