MUSIC: El Baile De Los Andes by Pangal & Gana
LONG-TERM CAMP: This is the third/final video at the long-term winter camp. We set it up on the previous trips if you missed them.
AUDIO: Something went wrong with the mic on the main cam for a bunch of shots (muffled, a few times recorded nothing). Used the action cam more than usual too and the DJI action 3 mics suck. Did my best to salvage it at home but some clips just don't sound right...sorry about that. Also got the worst piece of sensor dust of all time on day 6 🤦‍♂ But the best of the winter is yet to come. 10-day adventure next.

The music is great and reminds me of Iohan Gueorguiev's soundtrack selection when he was bikepacking through the South American snow. Some of the finest soundtrack work ever done on UA-cam, sadly it ran into copyright issues even though he was using it under license and I don't know if you can find it now, but the soundtrack music was Inti Illimani.

Another WOW!!! Thank you! How you still don't have 1M subscribers? This is probably the most Canadian episode on UA-cam, a couple enjoying nature on ice, building igloos, scating and having fun in temperatures well below freezing. An idea for your future episodes: maybe you can play a friendly hockey game with your buddies and even get into fake fist fight, who knows, it might get you more subscribers.

I spent three years in a tent while building my house and learned the peculiar trait of wildlife having a love to bed down near the tent. Animals like to sleep by us interestingly enough. It's like a comfort they want, but can't experience until we're asleep.

Erin must have been really been properly dressed to last that long inside the second igloo considering the cold. Also I couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if at about the third or fourth row up, she had to use the washroom, lol. Cutting an exit at that stage could have been disastrous.

I was just watching a video ...and they mentioned a UA-camr named ThroatSingKing ....the reason im commenting this to you is because this guy goes out in the backwoods of Ontario and makes these noises that sound like "flutes" i started wondering if just maybe thats what John heard that one day. The odds of you both being in near area on the same day maybe slim lol but i thought i would tell you about it in case you wanna go listen to see if just maybe thats what you heard??

Hello Jon and Erin. Congratulations on your igloo build!
I watched the igloo-building portions of your video with special interest and, as I saw the first layer being built, I wished I could have been there to warn you about a problem with your anchor spike. Part of the reason your transition between layers was difficult was that your spike was raised (possibly as much at 5" off the surface of the ice in a mound of snow you piled up to hold it in place. The center spike should be set into the snow (or in this case, the ice) at the same height as the bottom of the first layer of blocks. That discrepancy would have thrown off the three-dimensional geometry. In future, if you are building on ice, chop a small narrow hole in the ice where the spike will be set, pour in some water and loose snow, and then wait for the spike to freeze into place. This will ensure that the spike and bottom of the first layer are on the same level. The other reason you were experiencing gaps was that you were filling the form with snow all the way up to the top. For both the 8' and 9" igloo builds, the form should NOT be filled all the way up, but rather 1" to 2" from the top, otherwise the walls climb too high (and then lean in too soon), all of which again deviates from the desired catenary arch shape and results in those gaps between the inside wall of the lower block and the inside panel of the form.
With all that said, however, that gap you showed is not that uncommon and can happen even when everything is done correctly. The way to deal with it is for the form-handler to cram a mittened hand under the inside panel of the form and block the hole up as much as possible while the shoveler drops in a lot of snow, essentially choking the opening with a lot of snow, which is then packed. No doubt, something like that is what you did to deal with those gaps, so good on you both for working it out.
Hope this helps, and kudos to you and Erin on your perseverance!
    Cheers,
    - Martin

Thanks for your feedback! After the first one didn’t line up I was wondering if the centre piece being slightly elevated was part of the issue. It seemed so minor that I dismissed the idea but hearing you explain it I understand how it would impact each subsequent level.
It’s a fascinating tool, I enjoy learning how it works and it feels satisfying to finally have succeeded with one.
      Thanks again for the insights!

I appreciate the time and effort you enjoy the overhead visuals enough to re shovel and reshoot.
I’ve done similar things that no one has seen but only for my self gratification.
Nice to know I’m not the only “weirdo” amoung us.
