As a teenager working on construction in London UK renewing the Northern Outfall Sewer where it crossed several rail tracks serving the London Docks and a main road. It had been bombed in WW11 and hastily repaired with cast iron tunnel segment bolted on the inside, not a good idea for a smooth bore sewer. The main girders had to be replaced and the only crane access was along the rail tracks, so a British Rail crane similar to the one shown was hired in. The main banksman used a whistle and the rest of the team would shout out the stop signal as the cranes engine was noisy. So thanks for bringing back those memories.

This is the wildest, nastiest, rustiest collection of railroad machinery and crappy, old things I've ever seen. I'm no railroad expert, obviously, but this was fascinating and hilarious! Thank you 😊.

I was surprised to see the crane working. I thought they were going to park it and leave it! It seems to be working good and the diesel engine does not smoke even when it's lifting! I think that crane is handy to have and I think it deserves some love!

I loved the 200 ton crane/ derrick/ wrecker. I got to see them in action many times on the Milwaukee Road. i am however surprised they didn't put out at least one outrigger. An operator did that on a derailment and it flopped right over.

What an interesting motley selection of rolling stock, much of it is in urgent need of some care and attention. My favourite would be the vintage passenger carriages. At the risk of appearing to be an ignorant Englishman, what is the great big rusty thing at the very front, being pushed by the locomotive (which is second in the train). See 12:25 to 13:00.

@Jeremy Preece It's called a Jordan spreader. Its a big snow plow with wings on the side. You'll see them used for plowing snow, clearing brush, shaping ballast and digging ditches along the right of way.

Where is the plow unit parked now? I was in Cooperstown back in September and there was a rail plow unit along with some other old rolling stock and a diesel locomotive parked on a non-active section of tracks located directly across the street from a B&B in Cooperstown we stayed at.

The railroad hzs done an excellent job of saving antique work equipment from the scrapper. They should set aside $1.00 from eadh passenger fare for a paint fund. No question that painting most of this equipment will be a major task. Just the sanding a preparation will be a many hour project.

Nigel Litchfield...... I agree, but the FRA dictates when bells, whistles & horns (Steam & Diesel) are used.... you would need to address the issue with them.... a lot of us would love to see (or hear) train crossing "whistling" reduced.
Horn blowing at crossings are wayyy more frequent than other countries, yet the US has far more train/vehicle collisions than nearly anywhere else in the world..... mostly because the gov't has managed to turn this country into a bunch of non-thinking "people" with no respect for just about anything and the lawyers are all too happy to help anyone... sue anyone, everyone and everything in sight on "your" behalf, even if it was "your" fault.
It's not the US that my generation was raised in (post WW2 era), that's for sure... I think we were the last ones (post WW2 kids) that were raised to think for ourselves (common sense), and respect others... not so, these days.
