Eritrea; the most beautiful country that I have ever been to. From the desert shores of the Red Sea to the alpine climate of the Central Highlands it's beauty and totally unspoiled originality is unmatched. And the honesty, kindness and decency of its people still humbles me even after having living amongst them for seven wonderful months. I will always fondly remember their utter honour and almost naive decency.
They've been through a lot though and they know how quickly things can change from stable to warlike. I think the mannerisms are more a function of culture than actual naivete, at least I hope so.
@@chilleverest and why is that Eritrea is very beautiful especially if they started renewing some of the old Turkish Egyptian and Italian style buildings and that train as well it would totally be one of the best country’s to visit
@@chilleverest no I've visited many countries and eritrea has the most potential it's beautiful the government needs to get working though I think they have started but many buildings still need to be renewed also with the peace with Ethiopia I hope the economy starts to come back
I'm literally from Italy, and still Italy is 2nd to me after Eritrea. Without even being barely related to Africa. Yet, Eritrea is truly a life changing experience.
Seeing these Trains, gives me a nostalgic tone and I miss them a lot when I was a child and was waiting for them to pass !! Trains and airplanes are two passions that I will carry with me all the time. What beautiful images !! Loved it
Wow. This video is amazing after some time I viewed a really nice video in u tube. Thanks for the producers. Amazing Eritrea love from Srilanka you are beautiful.
The best cameraman, thank you for the quality work. You brought back an old memory from chilhood. My gradfather use to work in trainstation Demsebay Eritrea(Anseba rigion). I injoid seen Eri-mountains and the railway in a 4K.
Thank you for putting together this great video. I knew Eritrea was hilly. It is hilly in spades. The Italians did a beautiful job of putting a railway through there.
That has to be one of the best potential tourist lines anywhere. The scenery is amazing. While the rolling stock clearly looks very tired, the main infrastructure looks in very good shape. The railway was definitely not built on the cheap with all those tunnels and viaducts.
@@davevonmuenster6649 Hi Dave, In the English of most other countries, except US and Canada, their word for "engineer" is driver. They have engineers, but not what we think of, for driving a train. Just a bit of assist here.
Tourism ruins the land though. It's such a draw on scarce resources, like water. Gov't then prioritize tourism, rather than protecting land resources. Parts of Indonesia now sit ruined due to tourism and the tourists no longer vacation in those spots. It's good, but it needs to respect the limits of the land.
Hats off to the camera man..captured some beautiful scenes. Watched the whole video without skipping. The train moves so effortlessly and the engine sound is so mesmerizing..wow 👍👍👍
Very interesting that these places still use 1800 technology and keep it all going. I bet it is a really great experience to ride those rails. what a beautiful country to see too. thanks for sharing this..
Many old railways from 1800 work today… in Italy, for example, we have Genova Torino, from 1854...from Genova to Busalla, "Linea dei Giovi", have 35 x 1000....a nightmare
CONGRATULATIONS on one of the most professional railway location video's I have seen for ages. Beautiful scenery and photography in an amazing Country. Thank you so very much for sharing this with the UA-cam community. The line reminds me so much of the Hejaz and DHP railways in Syria, which I travelled and filmed back in 2008. Now I need and want to visit Eritrea.
Stunning footage. Sometimes I felt like I was watching a model train on a layout. The engine steam mixing with the clouds at 17:08 is pure art. The running man escaping the train on the viaduct is also a nice touch :)
It's impossible to describe the beauty of the country in words. The video is outstanding and I agree with the other comments which say this is a magnificent video of a truly fantastic railway. I travelled on the line from Massawa on the coast up tp Asmara in 2010. I was also able to travel in the Littorina railcar down to Nefesit. The choice of videoing locations is excellent, especially the long-distance and high point locations. Makes me want to go back!
Beautifully shot and edited video. Could easily be an Eritrean tourism promotional video. Certainly I could see foreign tourists on this quaint little train taking in the wonderful scenery. Please do more !!
Amazing footage! What is most amazing to me is that the line has changed so little, in the almost 60 years since I first rode on it. In those days (1962) they had the "Littorina", a gasoline-powered rail car (or perhaps it was diesel). The Littorina was first-class, but there was also third-class service in a passenger car. (Which was always part of a goods train, at least that's how I remember it.) Unfortunately, my photos from the day have been lost. It is interesting to see how little Asmara has changed. The commentator who wrote about the loveliness of the Eritrean scenery and people was absolutely spot-on.
A pity you lost you pictures. I would have been very interested in looking at them. The littorinas are still there and one of them ran last year. From reports of people who rode it, it is however in a very sorry state. As a compensation for the lost pictures, you can look at mine here if you so wish: www.ona.vu/Eritrea/index.html
This video on UA-cam is the kind of thing that reminds me the C21st was worth sticking around for. In spite of all the ugly trends elsewhere here; a veritable toybox of wonders, gifted at a button-click, from far away. World-class cinematography; so much more powerful for its freedom from narratives or agenda; curiously more essentially human for having a machine and scenery as a focus. And - crucially - the soundtrack, too, is superlative; I love the richly-captured sounds! Thank you for your efforts into making this and for making this so well.
yes the no music or talking and good capture of the sounds on location makes you feel you are there. Of course a Steam engine makes a wonderful noise just by itself too :).
British Army family, we rode the Litorina from Asmara part way to Port Sudan in 1950. Along those tiny one-meter gauge tracks with a small battle-tank wagon being pushed ahead as our main defence against Shifta (rebel) attack. Painted black with a wicked gun barrel, it looked like a miniature front water-tank of a Garratt loco (Dad eventually worked Rhodesia Railways). Armed soldiers, one of them manned a Bren-gun spread-eagled on a raised platform close to us. Somewhere in the eventual desert we transferred for the rest of the way by a more regular looking steam train. Big and blue it was. Massive, to this boy of 7. Clickerty clack, that lightweight blue/cream Litorina was like riding a toy train compared with the UK green monsters we were accustomed to. Asmara station with no platform was a small shock. The indignity of us having to alight this toy from sand level. Thanks for the pleasure you bring, indelible memories.
Thank you for this interesting testimony. The "litorinas" are still there, but they are definitely (definitively?) out of order. In case you have memories of Rhodesia as well, I also published a video on the subject.
Mrbobinge Thank u for bring back ur 70+ years memory. Ur dad I believe as one of those soldiers whom defeated the Italians and got it out of Eritrea .. right ?! How long did u and ur family stayed in Eritrea and where were living ?! Do u have any diaries of that time ?
Train Lord says it all. Phenomenal. I wish there could have been some footage of this breathtaking journey from the driver's cabin and some details of these well maintained locos and the workshops. Maybe another documentary! God keep these wonderful and contented people.
Yes stunning, especially if you consider that the last 26 km were built in one year (Arbaroba to Asmara). You can call it an achievement. Thank you for your kind comment.
I would be delighted to see a train down to Massawa, but in the moment the track is blocked by a heavy landslide The railway does not appear to have the means to fix the problem, even though reaching Massawa remains an official goal.
Brilliant! With the exception of the final little 0-4-0 all the locos, track and 2 (?) passenger coaches appeared to be well maintained. 4 of those wagons appeared to be well travelled!
Very nice video. It's remind me of my childhood days where i used to travel in train with steam locomotive. Very beautiful shooting is performed. Great work...

Wonderful video with nice coverage of greenery and lovely landscapes. True hardwork. I have one person running on the arch bridge when steam engine approaches. Sometimes steam engine train was running with one _two or without passengers boggies. Thanks.
What a beutifull country. Some of the clips are straight works of art. The best railway video I have ever seen to date.
The scene as the train passes over the viaduct (2.32 onwards) is absolutely stunning. Love the Sun as it shines onto the trees and mountain range .
Top notch camera work - Excellent shot locations - this was one of the best train videos I have seen in years.
