Just built this system very similar to this. Did find that the baby fry were getting out through the filter sponge cut out. Found a solution: I bought FINE paint strainer mesh, wrapped the foam price in the mesh and pushed the foam back into the space. No fry have gotten out. Thought I'd share.
Nice! Having that extra room makes all the difference. Now you just need one more thing, a rolling stool with adjustable height, padded of course. Oh it will work in your new fishroom also. Oh, one other thing, if you put a piece of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch plywood on top of the stand, then that extra space could become a small shelf in front of the tank to set like your baster or other small items on while working on the fry system.

I'm eternally jealous of those with (mostly) level floors in their fish rooms. I live in a 99 year old house and have my modest fish room in the unfinished basement. I would love to be able to repair the old cement floor, some of that self-leveling stuff. But that would, of course, entail relocating all my current tanks, doing the pour, then moving it all back... Ugh, the eternal fish keeper's to-do list!..
Gaaahh that would be so much work! I hear you. So is the waterline in all of your tanks slightly off? That would bother me and I guess I never realized how lucky I am to have a level basement
For this I made a frame to go under my stands out of 4"x4" wood and attached leveler legs. You can then level your tank with with an alan key, even when full. You just need to check the rating on the legs compared to the weight of the tanks. I have this working with a 66 gallon with no issues.
I tried the tubs but there wasn’t enough room for all the fry and because I’m not home all the time to check sponge overflows etc it really didn’t work for me. I’m currently setting up more 2 foot tanks on a new fry spawning/ grow out system I’m connecting to my other egg laying system🤪🤪 I keep mine at 77f
I like your system too because it decreases the amount of time you have to move fish around! I hate playing musical fish haha. I love your new breeding rack!

nice work, for better control to not suck up fry, try "200cc Fluid Extractor Fluid Syringe" they are meant for automotive, but they are like a giant syringe/turkey baster, works great

Aquarium coop has an excellent members only video showing exactly how to build it, I would become a member even if it's just for one month and watch that. I use a small submersible pump attached to a PVC pipe with flexible tubing
I actually get them from a fish room site called Jehmco, have you ever heard of it? They are small stainless steel valves. When you purchase them you can have the company send you the exact drill bit and tap you need to install them in the PVC. Don't make the same mistake I did and use them for water, only use them for air. The water eventually causes them to corrode and not function as smoothly. They sell separate one's for water. Yeah exactly! And to do a water change on the whole system, you just have to siphon water out of the main tank. It's easy to do since you don't have to worry about sucking up any fry!

Ok, this was super helpful! HOWEVER, I use that exact pump for water changes and even when I close the intact to as slow as possible, the pressure is way too strong. How do you not over pressure your water pipes or not blow the motor. Sorry if this is a newb question!
Oh no kidding! Well I don't know actually lol. To be honest the pump is probably over pressurized constantly and that might impact the longevity of it. But it's what I had laying around so I used it. If you could find a smaller pump that would be more appropriate, OR you could create a pressure relief valve and just open it as much as you need to back into the tank so that you can decrease the working pressure. Get what I mean? I should have probably done that!
Hi can you please tell where I can get the little taps connecting the airline tubing to the PVC? I've been searching everywhere for some but can't seem to find them anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated, I am new to the channel but loving the videos so far 🙂

It's SO much nicer now! Yes, only while they're fry. After they grow up they slowly get acclimated into water that is not heated. It's usually around 68 degrees and they seem to love it!

@@louieloudog8533 haha yeah 82 is high overwise! Hmmm, I know they're adaptable but maybe! I used to have heaters in my cpd tanks set to 78 and they didn't seem as happy so one day I was researching them and kept reading how they really like cooler temperatures so I yanked the heaters out. I was getting a fair amount of eggs back then but now I'm getting a lot more. I have no idea if this is the reason, but I feel like weekly 50% water changes helps with getting more breeding going as well as power feeding them twice a day with live baby brine shrimp. I noticed a big difference in eggs when I started feeding brine but again maybe that was just my imagination haha
That's good to know! At first I was a bit bummed with my mistake, but then I realized it's still plenty strong. If you're running a whole rack that way it gives me a lot more confidence, thank you 😌
@@sydneysangels It’s working great. I actually used 2x2s for the end supports to allow easier opening of lids. I am able to stack four 20Ls without having one on the floor and still being able to easily see into the top one. My next racks will use angle iron for the supports for an even cleaner look. I’ve done the same with 40Bs except I added some angle iron across the front and back which still allows tighter stacking and practicality for me.
@@barefootaquatics oooohhh that makes sense! The 2x2 gives your hand more room. I would be nervous that it wouldn't hold but wood is stronger than I probably think. The angle iron is going to look really sharp, I would love to see that!

Sure I don't see why not! I have a colony of shrimp down there, some corydora and some CPD's. Sometimes fish just make it through the sponge when they're small and then they just grow up underneath the trays
Hi I was just wondering how you keep the airlines clean and fromclogging up. We have a fry set up running from a main tank on the top into containers but the airline tubing is always clogged with biofilm and stuff. I would love to know your thoughts
Apologize for the delay. After each batch I just take the lines off and rinse them with super hot water because I get similar issues. If that doesn't work you can soak them in vinegar. I don't know if there's a way around it to be honest, I struggle with the same thing and the only cure I know is constant cleaning between uses
No worries and I don't think I ever mentioned it! I think it was just regular white spray paint to be honest. Dean from aquarium co-op has a video somewhere on how to make it and he gives a specific brand but I don't remember now what it was!
Hi Dan love your content, ❣️❣️ I do have a question, I have a pair of angels and they lay roughly every 4 weeks but the eggs are never fertilized , they normally lay on a leaf or top of the intake , definitely male and female any idears please as I would love to breed of them , loving your channel from the UK
Thanks Cathy, I really appreciate that! You are 100% sure they are male and female? I've heard of two females laying eggs together before. If the eggs aren't getting fertilized it is possible that they just need more time to practice. I actually didn't get any viable fry from the first four spawns of my Philippine Blue Angel fish. After that, I had about a thousand angels with four successful spawns in a row! I don't know why it didn't work the first few times but that was my experience anyway. Sometimes I will try to do a water change and then heat the water up to about 80° f. Are you using any products on the eggs to fight off fungus? Maybe it's possible you're using too much? I use a tiny bit of methylene blue on my angelfish eggs while hatching. Otherwise I'm not sure, I'll be thinking on it though and I'll comment back if I have any more ideas!
Hi cheers for your reply, the only way I've sexed them is through there breeding tubes , was thinking of getting a breeding come for them to see if the angle for him is better, I don't use any products to help the eggs , they are in 400 litre planted community tank cheers again for your reply

Yeah I get a little bit of algae because it is quite intense. But I don't mind it in a breeding setup. The lights are from Home Depot if you're curious!
Hi! To be honest I haven't used it on angelfish eggs yet. This is because I find it hard to fit the slate I use in this system. I usually hatch out the slates in a 5-10 gallon bare bottom tank with some methylene blue at 80 degrees. Hatch rates vary for me, but normally I can expect 85%-95% because I take a small pipette and meticulously remove every fungus egg as they pop up. I think that helps a lot, along with very clean water!

If I did the math right, I believe what you have is about 8 U.S. gallons or 30 liters, is that correct? If that's the case than I would say for sure you have room! My small tanks are actually 5 gallon tanks. They are a little on the small size but I do large frequent water changes so that definitely helps
Maybe a hundred if your water quality is really good? Once they start to grow you'll have to transfer them to a bigger container obviously but for the first few days it really helps to keep them confined to a small space. It helps them find food and access the surface of the water easier
Why use an aquarium for the main holding tank? Seems to me it's bit of a waste of space and an aquarium that could otherwise be housing more fish. You really only need something to have water in to a depth of maybe 6"? Excellent rack though! Just a thought.
Hey Paul, I understand where you're coming from! I think the general idea is to provide the fish with the highest volume of water possible while still keeping them in tight groups while they are small. But yes you could use something like you are describing! It would just be a smaller volume of water which means more variables when it comes to water quality and maintenance
@@sydneysangels Ya that's a huge benefit... a larger body of water is more stable. And that really is an important factor. I really like your fry rack though, and Deans, but this video made it easier for some reason to build my own. But another idea I was thinking of building for a fry rack, that would give you 50 gallons instead of 20 in the same 4' of wall space. There is a 4'x2'x10" high, 50 gallon "Low Boy" tank you can get. I'd get one of those and divide it down the middle and then 3 more cross tank dividers to give me 8, 1'x1'x10" tall fry/grow out 'tanks'. So, when a Cory or a Pleco lays eggs, you put those eggs in a floating basket in one of those 8 tanks with the air stone, hatch them out, (or in the case of plecos empty the contents of the cave as wigglers or very young fry) grow them up intently for a couple weeks, then put them in the 'tank' they're floating in and wala! Depending on species, you might be able to grow them all up that way, but for others, I would put them in larger tanks eventually. Each fry tank would be 1'x1'x10" (or could be divided even more) all in one big 50 gallon tank, set up the same way for each separate 'tank'. Find any flaws in that way? Just curious.
Good design but because you got the measurements wrong the tank is no longer sitting over the legs. It’s worth pulling it apart and trimming the excess as it isn’t perfect. Keep the content coming
It's circulating fresh water from the larger container (20 gallon long) to each fry tray . It's hooked up to a small aquarium pump and runs continuously
Yeah that stand is definitely cringe worthy- support the weight with wood- never screws. Hopefully you won't learn the hard way... always paint a few coats before assembly and seal that wood from moisture, especially on the feet and couple inches up the legs. Otherwise nice build! Can't wait to get my own going.
I appreciate the feedback! Hear me out though- I'm really not concerned about the strength of the stand. Each screw has a shear strength of 80 pounds and I've used 32 of them to support the tank, so that's about 2,500 pounds of weight it could technically support. Does that sound right? I guess I could be completely wrong haha but the tank with water and equipment doesn't weigh more than 200lbs. Now in future builds I will probably be making dado joints but I didn't have the time since I'm doing this all while my baby is sleeping haha. Also I agree I should have sealed it. I should do that when I move it to the new room ☺️ I would love to see your setup when you build it!
I dont see the purpose of the fry system you are putting the fry into it for what reason? I breed thousands of fry and just put them into grow out tanks no mess no fuss could you please explain it to me maybe I'm not seeing the purpose that it's meant to be
I don't think it's meant for thousands of fry. I think this system functions better for smaller groups of fry that you want to keep separate while still providing a decent volume of water. Just another way of doing things but definitely not the best way for everyone! If you're breeding that many fry then yes it probably wouldn't work too well for you

Yeah it's definitely something for small scale hobbiest level breeding. I like it more as a hatchery tray nowadays to get my eggs to hatch and raise up for the first week

Try bleeding pressure off with a tee and valve. i do that it is easier on the pump also

I have an entire rack of 20Ls supported only in the ends Aquarium CoOp style. I’m planning to convert a lot of my fishroom to that style of racking.

Hi Dan love your content, ❣️❣️ I do have a question, I have a pair of angels and they lay roughly every 4 weeks but the eggs are never fertilized , they normally lay on a leaf or top of the intake , definitely male and female any idears please as I would love to breed of them , loving your channel from the UK
Thanks Cathy, I really appreciate that! You are 100% sure they are male and female? I've heard of two females laying eggs together before. If the eggs aren't getting fertilized it is possible that they just need more time to practice. I actually didn't get any viable fry from the first four spawns of my Philippine Blue Angel fish. After that, I had about a thousand angels with four successful spawns in a row! I don't know why it didn't work the first few times but that was my experience anyway. Sometimes I will try to do a water change and then heat the water up to about 80° f. Are you using any products on the eggs to fight off fungus? Maybe it's possible you're using too much? I use a tiny bit of methylene blue on my angelfish eggs while hatching. Otherwise I'm not sure, I'll be thinking on it though and I'll comment back if I have any more ideas!
Hi cheers for your reply, the only way I've sexed them is through there breeding tubes , was thinking of getting a breeding come for them to see if the angle for him is better, I don't use any products to help the eggs , they are in 400 litre planted community tank cheers again for your reply

Yeah I get a little bit of algae because it is quite intense. But I don't mind it in a breeding setup. The lights are from Home Depot if you're curious!

Hi there, since you are using the fry system for quite a few months, I was wondering what % of Angel fry survives from a single batch on an avg?
Hi! To be honest I haven't used it on angelfish eggs yet. This is because I find it hard to fit the slate I use in this system. I usually hatch out the slates in a 5-10 gallon bare bottom tank with some methylene blue at 80 degrees. Hatch rates vary for me, but normally I can expect 85%-95% because I take a small pipette and meticulously remove every fungus egg as they pop up. I think that helps a lot, along with very clean water!

Hi :) cool vidio !!! What sice are your small aquariums?. I what to build 2 at the side of my pc. There sice will be 30 cm x 30 cm x 35 cm so they are alittle longer. Is it posible to have cpd breeding groupe in 1 and have there fry in the other ?. I really hope I can have some egg laying fish most people in denmark won't even answer because they think its stupid to have fish is such small aquariums
If I did the math right, I believe what you have is about 8 U.S. gallons or 30 liters, is that correct? If that's the case than I would say for sure you have room! My small tanks are actually 5 gallon tanks. They are a little on the small size but I do large frequent water changes so that definitely helps

Maybe a hundred if your water quality is really good? Once they start to grow you'll have to transfer them to a bigger container obviously but for the first few days it really helps to keep them confined to a small space. It helps them find food and access the surface of the water easier
You might need to redo the stand so the legs are under the tank

Why use an aquarium for the main holding tank? Seems to me it's bit of a waste of space and an aquarium that could otherwise be housing more fish. You really only need something to have water in to a depth of maybe 6"? Excellent rack though! Just a thought.
Hey Paul, I understand where you're coming from! I think the general idea is to provide the fish with the highest volume of water possible while still keeping them in tight groups while they are small. But yes you could use something like you are describing! It would just be a smaller volume of water which means more variables when it comes to water quality and maintenance
@@sydneysangels Ya that's a huge benefit... a larger body of water is more stable. And that really is an important factor. I really like your fry rack though, and Deans, but this video made it easier for some reason to build my own. But another idea I was thinking of building for a fry rack, that would give you 50 gallons instead of 20 in the same 4' of wall space. There is a 4'x2'x10" high, 50 gallon "Low Boy" tank you can get. I'd get one of those and divide it down the middle and then 3 more cross tank dividers to give me 8, 1'x1'x10" tall fry/grow out 'tanks'. So, when a Cory or a Pleco lays eggs, you put those eggs in a floating basket in one of those 8 tanks with the air stone, hatch them out, (or in the case of plecos empty the contents of the cave as wigglers or very young fry) grow them up intently for a couple weeks, then put them in the 'tank' they're floating in and wala! Depending on species, you might be able to grow them all up that way, but for others, I would put them in larger tanks eventually. Each fry tank would be 1'x1'x10" (or could be divided even more) all in one big 50 gallon tank, set up the same way for each separate 'tank'. Find any flaws in that way? Just curious.
Sir, the way your tank sits is not very safe.. must hv some vertical woods underneath your tank to support the weight.
I think it's strong enough for now but you are right it can definitely be stronger. I will probably add vertical supports down the road!

Good design but because you got the measurements wrong the tank is no longer sitting over the legs. It’s worth pulling it apart and trimming the excess as it isn’t perfect. Keep the content coming

It's circulating fresh water from the larger container (20 gallon long) to each fry tray . It's hooked up to a small aquarium pump and runs continuously
Why dont u let 2 or 3 ramshorn inside that fry tray...they can clean the uneaten food...

Yeah that stand is definitely cringe worthy- support the weight with wood- never screws. Hopefully you won't learn the hard way... always paint a few coats before assembly and seal that wood from moisture, especially on the feet and couple inches up the legs. Otherwise nice build! Can't wait to get my own going.
I appreciate the feedback! Hear me out though- I'm really not concerned about the strength of the stand. Each screw has a shear strength of 80 pounds and I've used 32 of them to support the tank, so that's about 2,500 pounds of weight it could technically support. Does that sound right? I guess I could be completely wrong haha but the tank with water and equipment doesn't weigh more than 200lbs. Now in future builds I will probably be making dado joints but I didn't have the time since I'm doing this all while my baby is sleeping haha. Also I agree I should have sealed it. I should do that when I move it to the new room ☺️ I would love to see your setup when you build it!
I dont see the purpose of the fry system you are putting the fry into it for what reason? I breed thousands of fry and just put them into grow out tanks no mess no fuss could you please explain it to me maybe I'm not seeing the purpose that it's meant to be
I don't think it's meant for thousands of fry. I think this system functions better for smaller groups of fry that you want to keep separate while still providing a decent volume of water. Just another way of doing things but definitely not the best way for everyone! If you're breeding that many fry then yes it probably wouldn't work too well for you

Yeah it's definitely something for small scale hobbiest level breeding. I like it more as a hatchery tray nowadays to get my eggs to hatch and raise up for the first week
