Here’s Triumph; redoing, reworking, updating and IMPROVING their classic Bonneville line! Making the bikes better. More power, more torque, better everything, everywhere!
Here’s Harley; cutting from the street/sportster line. Bringing out 3 models that are exactly the same as they have been (excluding paint jobs and aesthetics) no upgrades, no improvements, no surprises, nothing! Just a price increase! Maybe Harley should hire someone from Triumph to show them how to build motorcycles?
Too bad Triumphs aren’t more accessible here in Tulsa Oklahoma where I live! They make absolutely beautiful, classy, and modern motorcycles that just LOOK retro but have actual parts and components from this century!

Triumph have a load of variants but not one that is really the 'US custom' look which is really what the main selling point of the original 'US spec' designs, just needs the 'US custom' livery, more alloy everywhere, the higher rise bars, grab rails, a bit more chrome, though i'm fussy i would of liked the old alloy switch clusters on the bars and the for me the cruise control? what bonnie rider is really interested in that? it's a bike for people who want to taste and eat every inch of road, i think the whole range is really a load of near misses

Triumph you've done the impossible by coming back and in bloody fine shape to boot! So many attractive offerings, scramblers, traditional "real" bikes, a twin that has a decent track history; (already)! Makes me feel good, and more when I hear one roll by.

Not a word about what has been removed ? Biased towards Triumph's marketing ploy? For the T120 at least, no more standard heated grips, no more center stand, no more handrail - those are more to thank for the claimed weight saving than changes to the engine.

    • @UncleJemima

As far as I was concerned they were some of the key differences to the t100 which partially justified the extra cost. Now they are gone and the t100 has more power I won't bother with the t120. Basically it's a stealth price hike.

For almost a year, I dreamed of the Speedmaster. Compared to the T120, it's "cooler". The T120 had colors schemes and a seat that did not appeal that much to me but I felt it was a more sensible bike to own. The standard peg position would be better for our horrible roads, the larger tank more practical, heated grips more usefull than cruise ctl, more lean angle. My brain said T120, but my heart said Speedmaster. However, when I saw the new for 2020 orange color, that sealed the deal and I went for the T120.

By most accounts, the modern classic line continues to be plagued by fuelling issues linked to Euro 4 & 5 emissions restrictions. Some pople don't notice it while other riders sell their bikes beacuse of it. In fairness, most new bikes have the same problem and its most noticebale characteristic is a twitchy throttle, especially at low speeds and in low gears. Some describe it as having a throttle that acts more like an on/off swich as opposed to a smooth, linear delivery of power. Another thing to consider is that the days of installing a nice set of slips ons to enhance the sound of your bike are finished. All the modern classic bikes are heavily muted and slip ons really won't make a difference as most of the sound dampening is happening in the catalytic converter. And if you remove the catalytic, you end up throwing out the fuelling significantly resulting in a dimished ride that pops and backfires heavily on the overrun. Again, not Triumphs fault. But the state of Motorcycling is in a sad place right now.

  • @karlosh9286

Speed Twin. Yes it needs an RS version for those who like adjustable suspension and maybe a bit more power, although I'm happy with the suspension and power on my one.
Seat needs to fully cover the frame, and therefore a little more pillion room.
Get rid of the blacked out section on the exhaust pipes. Make them all brushed stainless steel (nope I don't want to pay £700 for Vance & Hines)
Lug on the kick stand needs a bit extra metal to put your foot on. (I've told Triumph that, when they asked me, it'll be interesting to see if they do.)
Slightly bigger fuel tank, but I don't guess that will happen.

I recon the new T120 is still the pick of the Bonni range. I was hoping to see a 6speed box on the T100 range. The bump in power and reduction in weight is grate. Now Royal Enfield is hot on Triumph hills but I recon if some wants a Triumph they will buy a Triumph. Now there is another dark horse in the class and that is the new V7 850cc with 65ph and 6speed box and a the electronic gadgets as the Triumph. Plus it has shaft drive which is even more low maintenance. With a bigger fuel tank and less weight it might be a very interesting alternative. Now a test with T100 and T120 and the new V7 850cc would be a grate idea and I know Tim will be very happy to help out with it.

For me, it's between the T100 and Street Twin. I find the smaller engine has that buttery smooth sound and I prefer to have a bit extra fuel range (larger fuel tank would be nice, Triumph). I just want something relaxed that goes along without a fuss. Heck, I think I even prefer a more spaced-out 5-spd rather than a closer-ratio 6-spd, especially with these very wide powerband twins. Very nice bikes. (edit: cruise control would be so nice across the range)

I own a T100 Black 2014 and to be quite honest with you I hated it the moment I rode it for the first time. The road legal pipes didn't sound like a Bonneville should sound so I replaced them with the, not for road use ones, then she sounded lovely. I've had no end of trouble with the shoddy metal quality all over it for example, I bought it with a number of extras a chrome rear rack which rusted in a week spokes that you dare not leave it outside for a second in the rain as it may dissolve into a pile of rust. I spent nearly £12,000 on it new and all it did to me was put me off Triumph for life.

This was like waiting for the next update in the Harley Sportster lineup. Same bikes. New marketing spin. And I'm a fan of both lines. Just wish they would combine their classic bikes with more updated features like they did with the scramblers.

Part of the reason why the RE650 sells so well is the aluminium engine is there to be seen and not covered to paint. It looks all the more authentic

Bonneville buyers don't look at other bikes.. maybe so, but the one's that do end up stashing the cash and buying an Interceptor. 😂😄😉😁

I was hoping that there may have been some commentary on what I think was the 1959 Triumph 650 Bonny in the background, Rego No., 919 FAE. My first bike was a 1959 Thunderbird. Prior to a complete customization, it ran for well over 35000 miles without any major issues. Would love to see Triumph do a limited edition retro based on the 1959 Bonneville. Thanks for sharing, truly a very interesting review, Cheers...

I remember seeing a video of Guy Martin trying to do the gold pin striping on the Scrambler he used to recreate The Great Escape jump on. Yes pin striping looked difficult to me, and sod doing the jump over the fence on the bike either !

@@richardhouvener6423 Yes, Bud Ekins did the jump for Steve McQueen in the film.
Guy Martin also did a video on the jump, and they had a go at recreating the jump. In the hour long TV program they also talked a bit about the Great Escape film .
Here's a small part of the program :

Still not making the Bonni I want. Up swept exhaust, dual gauges, dual front discs, no gators on the forks, alloy wheels, shocks from the Thruxton and with
chrome fenders. Also the big chrome tank badge, rubber knee pads and two tone paint. This is the look I remember from the late 60's and 70's and a look I
will buy if Triumph ever makes this one.

My one issue with my 2018 T120 that I'm amazed they haven't changed, is the damn headlight. Have to have my brights on as soon as the sun starts to disappear. The light looks nice from the front, but it's nothing more than a daytime running light. I know I can change it, but that's beside the point.

Nice round up Bob. Saw a few reviews on my drop down but thought yours would be a good rounded view point and you seem to have a good rapport with Steve Sargeant. The price increases must be due to all the extra precious metal in the cats 😉
