- Game Informer asked Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's game director, Naoki Hamaguchi, 129 rapid-fire questions about the party's next adventure while visiting Creative Business Unit I during our recent cover story trip in Tokyo. During our chat, we inquired about the original Final Fantasy 7's rumored N64 version, Zack's importance in the remake, whether mainline entries will ever return to Nintendo consoles, and 126 other burning questions. Oh, and we also try to guess the next game's subtitle. My money is on "Reloaded."

I love Hamaguchi so much, man. He was a fan of FFVII back in the day, which makes him relatable. But also, as a dev in marketing and interviews, he shows that he is really passionate but super chill. Definitely my favorite Square Enix employee at the moment
I'm a really big fan of Hamaguchi (both as a personality and his design philosophy), and this interview only reinforces that! I really hope he gets to make a new numbered entry in the FF series one day =) This was really great fun guys - great job!
He is directing the biggest title so far. I think he most likely will direct the next part and beyond (other titles). There were a couple directors though for such a big title of course, Nomura for one, but he does work on different games all the time it seems.
He is likely already involved deeply with 7R3, so 17 is likely going to someone else like Ishikawa from 14's recent expansions, but 18 sounds likely since he is directing what is the biggest game in the franchise ever in terms of scope

I love how passionate he is about this game, it was probably a dream of his to work on a game like this. Also I called the multiverse story when I saw that the stamp chip bag had a different dog from the Remake timeline and people called me crazy. This stuff is always thought out. I cant wait for this game!
As a Kingdom Hearts fan, I ironically never got into Final Fantasy until last year when I played FFXV and FF16 for the first time. I loved them.
Then I noticed that I had FF7 Remake in my library for free from PlayStation with an additional free PS5 upgrade, and seeing that Rebirth is coming, I started Remake last night to know the story. I told myself that if I liked it, I’d get Rebirth.
And I’m so getting Rebirth.
I'd recommend playing the original as well so your experienced is enhanced because we don't really know if FF7R is a replacement for the original

I love that they answered questions we all had, but never expected to be asked. Comparing Red's fire tail to a Charmander, asking about Smash bros, how Cloud's hair is so spiky? Lol. I loved it. Also giving hope that Jessie might not be dead? I would love it if she survived.
Good things: Huge map, Story stays faithful "in the bigger picture," Crisis core is not cannon which means Dirge is (probably) not either, Chocobo racing is more involved this time.
Bad: no snowboarding
They've got to save some things for part 3:
Weapon fights, Tifa vs. Scarlet, Knights of the Round, Don Corneo in Wutai, playable Cid and Vincent, finding the big materia, snowboarding.

Snowboarding came after Aerith's death. Also he said Crisis Core isn't cacnon to remake. That doesn't mean the same for original. In original Zack did die on that cliff. That didn't happen in remake. That's probably what he meant. It'd be really hard to pull off a Schrodinger's Zack.
Yes it is cannon to the original. And its good to know that remake is not dictated by the compilation. In the interview the English is translated to "other titles" but in Japanese he says "compilation." Also we dont know what they are doing with the timelines stuff, because zach surviving in the past changes the present/future retroactively, unless there is multiple timelines/multiverse, in which case he is dead and alive at the same time. @@kirara2516
Hearing Hamaguchi saying his favorite part is when Hell House appears when I've been stuck on that boss for 2 days now on hard difficulty felt like a call out lol
Magic, triple slash, stop/slow and bio are your friends in hard mode
What made me get stuck in difficulty mode was the damn tonberries. As soon the house release them, use Cloud's triple slash or Aerith's Sorcerous storm to instantly kill all 3 while they are pressured
That boss music is still triggering, especially the part where it starts flying. Got stuck on that part for so long😂

Love that he called out things he liked from other FF like coolest character and most silly from FF6 and that it was the one that resonated so much with him as a kid.
This was a joy to watch. I was in middle school when I pre-ordered FFVI as well. FFIV was my first mainiline in the series, but my favorite has alternated between VI and VII. Honestly, FF7R is often feeling like my favorite in the series since it came out and I'm thinking there's a chance Rebirth could end up taking that top spot.

This was translated as "Sense" Materia in the OG FF7 for those confused. Can someone remember how it was called in the Remake? Played only the Japanese version of the game so I don't know. Was it also "Sense" or was it really "Assess"?

I am prepared to eat my own words. I was not very optimistic about Naoki Hamaguchi, saying things liike "It seems like he is just writing and directing his own fan-fiction." Which is cruel and quite hurtful.
I am optimistic now having felt like getting to know him and seeing that he has true passion regarding the FF7R franchise as an isolated instalment.
Thank you for this, it was important game journalism for some of us who have kind of lost our way.

In my opinion, Naoki Hamaguchi is an exceptionally young talent that knows how to make FF7 feel great. Maybe one day, he will direct a mainline series entry in the future.
