This cycle of avoidance and the worsening of physiological symptoms of misophonia makes a lot of sense, and I think it helps explain the reverse as well!
I started listening to ASMR a few years ago and it started with things like guided meditations and distance reiki sessions. Over time, I started to be more open and curious about other asmr sounds.
It’s not like I can tolerate videos of people eating, but I think that the inclusion of some mouth sounds in the asmr I listen to for sleep has helped lessen my symptoms of misophonia in my day to day life.
I still can’t watch a video of someone eating and it still drives me crazy if I can hear someone eating at another table in a restaurant, but I am much less disturbed than I used to be.
My misophonia initially got worse after I identified it, but it slowly got a little bit better after I started associating similar sounds with relaxation! I know it won’t work for everybody, but I definitely think there was a correlation for me.
(Edit: Of course I wrote this before you also explained how it works in the reverse lol 😅)
