Not as exciting when they are the same room. I guess David could hang up a sheet as a room divider and then he would be going from one room to another. 😁
That really cheered me up! I have been ill in bed for days, watching various van life vids, mostly American, peopled by extroverts having glorious times in exotic places. But that wonderful British self-deprecating ‘ordinariness’ is hilarious. Loved it. Thank you
I may suggest that once you preheat onside of the ridge monkey that you flip it over and place the pizza on the cooler side. This will mean the top will get nice hot heat from the preheated side and the bottom will slowly come up to temp and cook by the time the cheese is done
Thank you David. Wonderful to see your dry sense of humour back. We have missed you. The black pizza made me proper laugh. It bought back the hilarious time you baked bread ! I would stick to cheese sandwiches. Thanks again for making me 😃
So you blow the entire budget for this production on a self indulgent exotic location and had nothing left for room service or a plumber. Looking forward to part two. Thanks David. Cheers
At last, someone who shows the realities of vanlife. So many videos of people building cosy vans, but you never see them actually living (cooking, washing and cr@pping in them). This is why I built a dayvan/mobile office only: I’ll sleep in my bed, wash un my bathroom and eat in a restaurant, thanks. There’s a reason houses are so popular😀👍
Better to find out close to home you have a problem than to go out far and find it. See car park or what we call driveway tripping makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to film it...and that shower scene.
I love the Hancock-ian way you manage to make watching paint dry rather amusing, albeit at a level of tongue-in-cheek that post gen X'ers might find shoots over their heads. Nice demonstrations of an up market griddle iron, and how to see if an egg is stale... floating upright. But most impressed with your monochromatic clothing selection... don't like orange or green or yellow do you?... nor brown even! I am now in eager anticipation of the impending Part 2, for which I will prepare with a few cups of highly stimulating coffee. :-) Hope the crowds on the drive back were not too bad.
Suggestion: Heat the ridgemonkey UPSIDE DOWN first then turn it over and place pizza in - then it will cook from the top AND the bottom at the same time.
And after the top has cooled down a bit - open it and slide the pizza across (to the warm top) and close the ridgemonkey and put back on the lit hob = turning the food over regularly will allow it to cook evenly and not burn (like with a real oven 😉). I assume you are supposed to turn the food over regularly as the heat is applied to the bottom, and gets radiated off the top
@8:00 So, you have to heat the top side very hot first then flip it and put the pizza in with the unheated side down and let that side heat. The top will stay hot for a while heating the cheese, perhaps even browning it if you do it right and the bottom will heat slowly and that makes it less likely to burn. also some olive oil wouldn't be a bad idea on the bottom when you add the pizza. Alternately, next time fold the pizza in half in a cold ridgemonkey and trim the edges and smash it together real good and make a calzone like thing. Might need a thinner pizza. We usually did this with dough, not fully premade pizza. But you don't want to preheat this one and instead flip it constantly, that's where the tool performs best.
Lmao. Did you have to clean windscreen of bugs after such long haul? Some really good chuckles. Thank you... Can't wait to see water pump conclusion. Riveted. ( I'm actually looking forward to it very much)
Made us feel like we should give van life a go. It looked like great fun to be in the van you designed and built and we loved the location. Looking forward to part 2.
'Oh wizard!' cried Julian, 'I didn't think we were going to have any adventures this holiday.' Julian, Dick George, Ann and of course Timmy, the dog, all jumped into Davids van with wide and excited eyes and chattering non-stop as to where this mystery tour was going to take them. With imaginings of groaning tables of tuck, lashings of ginger beer and vast KFC Family Skips of ice cream they settled down for the journey. The adventure had begun! Could it be the water pump inlet hose is too close to the bottom of the container and the suction has pulled it closer and so limiting the amount of water that can pass? Or a kink in the tubes? Or squashed in a hinge or something? No doubt the famous six would find out in due course.
I would try to heat up one side of Ridge Monkey to as hot as it gets and then turn the hot part on top and put the pizza in the lower, more cooler part.
And today I learned what a Ridge Monkey is. It’s a pie iron. Never thought about using it anywhere but over a campfire. Maybe if I’d ever had a gas stove instead of electric. Hmm. This is quality content. Thanks.
Why am I watching this to the end and find myself looking forward to Part the Second? Because you take trouble with the production and you're one of the good guys! Thanks. As to Ridge Monkey, who named it thus? It's a sandwich toaster on steroids.
So very funny. I was so excited that you were going on at adventure. Then you just changed spaces in the car park. I was laughing 😆 so hard. Great to have you back just love your sense of humor. Please keep them coming but follow the rules.
David, a change of scenery always does the soul good, even if it's just a different angle of the old scenery. Your van conversion is top notice, very nice!!!!
Thanks for vid....you have saved me a fortune....no camping ....no camping...no camping ...4 star and above for me! Pass me the fluffy dressing gown an the hot tub....

Just my two-pennorth. I see Sebastian gave the same advice. So, great minds think alike... or, fools seldom differ. I fancy the former. But, I would.

This has really made me smile....I laughed out loud when you parked up. The pizza looked really yummy. I'm glad you show things that dont go quite right too.
Thank you for sharing your little adventure even though it is just in the car park. That's one of the things I love about UA-cam just seeing people doing their everyday stuff and taking us along. Take care and God bless Gloria 🐂
That was a fun video David. I wasn't sure you were really "roughing it" as we say in the states until I saw you eating your eggs from the carton instead of an egg cup. Hope the camping trip smoothed out after that. Take care, stay well and do be safe returning home.
I have a similar pan by "Coleman" £9.99 bought in Camping store. When heating anything it is designed to flip the Pan over to cook the other side. It works great with everything from chicken to burgers and wont burn the food.
What you need is a continuous loop of canal-side scenery just outside the windows, like in the silent movies. You could imagine you were in the canal boat.

It's a great idea to give the camping a test, it means you can deal with any issues that crop up now ready for when you are able to do your real road trip and camping. Well done that man! best wishes David
Along with the Ever Given ship memes, this work must come to be seen as a landmark in our civilization's response to the pandemic. Here is a man who despite everything refuses to be defeated by the overwhelming, crushing melancholy of lock down and who takes pleasure from the simplest possible things. In doing so he challenges us to rise to the challenge as well. In this fullness of time this work should become a video art installation in a major gallery. I'm not joking.
For making toast: they sell these handy little compact rectangular grills that fold down to nothing and work a treat on a gas burner. Something like the "Gelert folding camping toaster". It gives off the perfect kind of heat to create the necessary "Maillard Reaction" to make toast. But, you have to watch it like a hawk because it goes from anemic to burnt in a blink of an eye. Otherwise, you could try putting butter on your bread before putting it in the Ridgemonkey for a bit of "fried slice".
What a long drive, but indeed very entertainingly cos the magnificent scenery🤣. Marvelous vid , im rather anxious te see part two. I just admire the way you add humor to the vlog. Well done🤩
The worst piazza disaster I've witnessed was a frozen piazza on a campfire. Burnt on bottom, frozen on top, and they ate it, and said it was delicious. I think they were half mad with starvation.

I am laughing so much, it hurts. I second the nomination for an oscar.
Reminds me of a great adventure I had once - sleeping in a tent in the garden when I was 8 😆
Great fun. You can make anything interesting and I am not being sarcastic!
Please upload part 2 as soon as possible. The suspense is killing me! LOL
Haha I haven't edited it yet
Using the egg box as an egg cup, genius!
Doesn't everybody do that when necessary?
We always do this when camping learnt from my parents
A coloure matched wardrobe!
I understand the need to go somewhere else, I myself sometimes wander from kitchen to livingroom.
I actually went to the garden center 2 weeks ago. It was terrifying but exhilarating. Also helped me spruce up my porch garden which made me happy.

Your wonderful sense of humour and down to earth attitude is a lockdown saviour. Stay safe and keep well, David.
