I love the music from New Horizons so I thought I'd just throw this out there, it's an orchestra performing some of the music from the game: ua-cam.com/video/nsreFA5KjYE/v-deo.html
+dtPlaythroughs Yoko Kanno is also responsible for the soundtracks to Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain, which are particularly amazing! :-D
SNES drunk SNESdrunk you’re the champion!!
If you guys are playing my Olivia Munn game her Port probably doesn't offend too many people but I did find that old G4
Ration meter for the crew effects crew happiness. If it drops too low the maneuverability, and speed, of the ships drops, including in battle. It will also make mates that don't like you steal a ship.
The round earth society is a way to increase your luck. You have to donate about 51% of your wealth (including what's in the bank) to increase your luck 1 point I believe. I can't recall exactly what it was to max out but I believe the minimum amount to trigger it was 6 gold. IIRC it takes something like 8 doublings to guarantee max fortune so around 1,600 gold, but it can take more. The best thing to do is buy up tons of silver, carpet, art, or gold, fully load your ships with food then start donating 51% repeatedly with what's left, ideally enough to finish in one shot.
It is a hidden stat, the only way to check it is to go to the fortune teller and ask her to read your fortune. She'll say different things based on your luck stat. You want "What a strong fortune, you have nothing to fear in this life." That's 100% then you study to maintain it.
Luck increases odds of getting the best cannons, and figureheads, at the secret shipyards that sell them, when fully upgraded and aligned with you. Cannons are self explanatory and the figureheads ward off storms and creatures. It also improves outcomes in duels, mates liking you and tile against them leaving you.
Never put a mate with bad luck in charge of a ship (they drown in storms and you lose the ship) or let them navigate/negotiate. You can't increase their luck.
Boooooo the first uncharted waters is fantastic, BOOOOOOOOOOOO
My playing this game in the mid to late 90s as a pre-teen is 95% of the reason i became a geographer as an adult. Amazing game.
That's really cool
Same for me, because of both this game and Sid Meiers Pirates! On the Amiga.
Agreed. Would love a Stardew type updated version of this with the dueling system from this more or less the same. Improved ship combat and customization. The current multiplayer online thing does nothing for me like this gem did. Hated the hurricanes though and if you fail game over. I also like PTO 2 also made by KOEI.
i keep thinking if I ever get my code game up, I would love to make something that built off this; I'm always surprised UW Online has been running so long, but they won't revisit a single player game?
I wanted to be a cartographer (and pirate) growing up because of New Horizons, very cool to see you became a geographer because of the series 😄
They could put out a similar type game on today's mobile phones...
...but in-app purchases would sour the experience.
I bought this "random" game at a GameStop in the mid-90s at our local mall from the bargain bin for just $5 on a whim. I am so glad that I did since it is such an amazing game and is literally the best $5 I have ever spent in my life. I remember me, my brother, and my sister playing this game for hundreds of hours learning all about geography, ships, navigation, history, commerce and overall just the world in general. Such fond memories and I am so thankful for everything. :)
This game legitimately helped my memory of geography when I needed it for school back in 1998.
0:04 "I am Drunk"
I don't know why i didn't expect that from you, but that's when i pressed the like button.
just watched Mike Matei play it and christened him the standard "I am Ass"
I love 90s era Koei. This one I still play from time to time.
New Horizons is in my top 5 snes games of all time. Definitely worth playing.
Yea no doubt
What other 4?
@@zakkman Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Zelda LttP, Yoshi's Island. Runners up: Final Fantasy II and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3.
@@heathmcrigsby Similar here. Most people's top list is action heavy. Genghis Khan was fun, Gemfire, Simcity. I also liked the Populous games. Romance 2 is my jam, I just got into Romance 3.
New Horizons is fkn' amazing. Such an overlooked gem.
Nice review. New Horizons is so damn good. Just a brilliant game and one of the best things Koei ever did. Awesome to see you give it justice in this review. One thing I'll say is that most Koei console games/ports are a labor of love, and require patience and understanding when contending with them. They're definitely an acquired taste. :)
It was definitely a stand out super solid amazing KOEI game, the height of KOEI golden era for SNES for certain!
@@Operations1000 Love KOEI. I remember they had a slogan contest in the 90's and I thought I nailed it for sure with "We make the game, you make the history". As you can tell, I played their historical series like crazy until I tried their other titles like Uncharted Waters and Aerobiz.
The game series is known in Japan as Daikoukai Jidai, and the later sequels after New Horizons were never released outside Japan until the Uncharted Waters Online MMO which got released worldwide in 2011. I remember the PC versions of the first two games though.
Edit: There is a new game in the series called Uncharted Waters Origin, which was released worldwide days ago, and was released for Steam, iOS and Android, made by Motif and published by LINE Games, officially licensed by Koei Tecmo, and made for the 30th anniversary of the Daikoukai Jidai series, apparently.
Sophie Neuenmuller Arbeith XII I've played quite a bit of UWO myself
The soundtrack to this game is amazing in my opinion. Check out the special edition album they put out for this game. It's Yoko kanno before she got hugely popular.
Can you guys be more clear on this please? Where can I find this album?!
@@Phantomdota honestly if you search for uncharted waters special edition ost it should be easy to find
New Horizons is so awesome. Can't recommend it highly enough.
As a kid my mother always jokingly threatened to kick my butt to Timbuktu, which I dismissed as a made up word. When I eventually played this game in my pre-teen years I learned it is absolutely a real place and exactly where it is. Koei was my favourite company back in 90s and this game is one of their best, and probably the one that actually holds up best today.
Being Portuguese, and a João, it amazes and baffles me that this game exists, one about sea exploration at that. It's absolutely surreal. It took the japanese to create a video game very slightly based in history and about an otherwise very ignored country 😂 (And then expanded to the rest of the countries involved in international sea trading at the time)
I'm sorry for mispronouncing your name so badly, João!
@@SNESdrunk Don't worry about it xD I can't fault anyone for not knowing how the "ão" sounds
Played and beat the NES version of Uncharted Waters. Love the great. Super underrated.
Having just completed a speedrun of Ernst's campaign and holding the world record (ignore that it's the only record), I can say with certainty that New Horizons is absolutely worth playing!
I dont know how much does coments helps you to continue your work here but MAN! i admire you, I love snes games and you make me feel like I have to play them again
Thank you for taking the time to watch, lots more to come
This and Nobunaga Ambition are just my favorite summer night in my room wasting hours away games. Love em both.
New Horizons is one of my favorite SNES games. Got it on a clearance rack. Even now, the game is just good. Wish they'd port it to Switch
UW:NH is one of my favorite games of all time... vastly under rated in my opinion.
This game is my favorite SNES game of all times and I made sure it was my first purchase when I started rebuilding my collection.
The ration system does work and it changes how pleased/displeased your crew is and prolongs the depletion of your food and/or water. If your crew is not very happy they are more likely to both die and leave when you discover artifacts and animals while exploring villages. If you let them get waaay too displeased, the will mutiny which sucks.
The round earth society is a little bit weird, but in order to unlock the rare "luck"-based figureheads and cannons you need to have donated a significant amount to them - not sure exactly how it works though. Also, I read somewhere that donating to them decreases the chances of running into fog and/or sea witches etc. not sure if this is true though.
I also found Aerobiz to be reasonably accessible and a lot of fun. Most of the time, though, you are absolutely right about Koei games: I really wanted to like a lot of Koei's games, but I just couldn't make myself slog through the learning curve, which was more like a vertical line.
I absolutely loved Uncharted Waters as a child. Its not for everyone, most would find it boring but for me it was such a great adventure. And the SNES version is a port of the NES version which is why the graphics looks as they do.
Thanks for sharing . The old Koei games have allways been among my favorite games when I was young . I wish they would make some strategy games with the depth of these old ones .
Still my favorite game to this very day.. I wish they'd bring these KOEI type games back..
New Horizons has been one of my favorite games since I first played it in 1995. Great soundtrack, character selection and gameplay. I like playing as Pietro and Catalina because I love their theme songs while sailing.
I am from Portugal and I never knew about these games. Good work on explaining the details, it left me very interested in both ;)
Great video! I'd love to see a video on the Genesis title Pirates Gold and the Japanese Game Freak title Pulseman!
One of my favourite games as a kid, both for its music and immersive game play and replay ability . I think this is why I love the ocean so much.
I used to play the original Uncharted Waters with my mother and my grandmother, I can't even tell you the feeling I get when I hear the Lisbon theme... New Horizons is objectively better in pretty much every way, but UW 1 has a magic to it that can't be replicated...especially not today.
Quality content. You go straight to the point as well and make it enjoyable. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to watch
2:10 What difference does setting stats make? Keep rolling, and you'll get an exceptional roll, and have a crap ton of extra points to distribute. You can get 100+ unallocated points to distribute or more. There is a similar roll process in a few of the Wizardry games, where you can roll enough points to get an elite character (eg, samurai, ninja, lord) when creating your starting party.
I recently beat the original again for the first time in 20 years. I chose the Genesis version. It's the one I grew up with, but I thought the graphics, colors, and sound were better. The screen also just seemed to flow better and faster. I like becoming wealthy enough to have warships and jumping other fleets. You eventually have to for the story to advance anyway.
Not only that but in the first one if you invest in ports you unlock a special bigger ship once the ports value hits 60k
I agree the first one is really good
Great video! I was looking forward to this one. Basically my exact feelings on New Horizons, still some stuff I don't understand (still awful at ship to ship battles) but there is just something satisfying about sailing around the world, discovering new ports, trading goods and (my favourite) finding exotic/now extinct rare animals and ancient ruins.
Thank you for uploading SNES related content. I enjoy every video you make!
Thanks for taking the time to watch
Hope you give the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series another chance. The 4th especially is fantastic, and has a lot of depth as you get into it.
I remembered playing this game back in the 90s and it was great. Used to do a lot of trading for gold and then dump it to the bank at the end of the month to get the interest and buy ships then go explore for treasures for more money.
I don't think I would have the same time or patience to play through this game anymore though.
"I am Drunk" lol
the round earth soceity raises your hidden luck stat and is neccesary to avoid things like storms and to quit the best ship equipmetn(guns and figureheads)
This is one of my favorite all time games such a great game me and my friend James McClure used to geek out and play this all night
I saw a complete in the box copy of New Horizons at a flea market yesterday. Perhaps I’ll have to pick it up the next time I’m there.
New horizons and it's sequels on saturn and psx are true hidden gems imo. If you like sid meiers pirates, you will love new horizond and it's sequels. Games have aged well.
These came out on Saturn and PSX??
yes, but the only english version is of new horizons on the snes. I would try that one first.
BOTTOM LINE - Uncharted Waters is the greatest game of the SNES and deserves more fans than it currently has. Also deserves a sequel!!!!
Ummm, no. It's not the greatest snes game
well it has sequels, except 5 is a web game and 6 is a mobile mmo, it has 4 uncharted waters games and they are all good
New Horizon was a very good game. I still remember how amazing it was to sail around and just discover new things. Definitely among the besr Snes Game out there
Happy new year Snesdrunk!
Thanks, you too
Please review "Big Sky Trooper" for the SNES. I am really interested to hear what your thoughts are on it. I found this game by accident and didn't think much of it at first. I gave it a chance and I am so happy that I did. I really ended up loving it. Thanks.
As someone who's let's played both games, I'm glad you gave this series some attention, and treated it fairly.
Yeah, the first game was definitely very bland and not particularly well presented. Everything worked, and when you understood everything, it went smoothly enough, but getting there was way too hard for most folks. The second game got it right. Still had a learning curve, but it wasn't as steep as the first game (except for the trading mechanics), and it was way more fun to learn to play.
Great stuff. Looking forward to going through some of your other videos.
I was fortunate to play the original UW with my mother and grandfather when I was a kid. My grandfather knew almost everything about the game so I didn't have to worry about esoteric stat values. He also had some helpful advice, such as "If you sail to africa during the winter months you'll rarely encounter a storm, if ever" After watching this video just now...I understand why people would be turned off by the original, especially with the lack of detailed info in-game.
I love that opening screen.
Dude, I’m drunk
Good look at these games. I agree that New Horizons is definitely worth a look. The Koei games are odd because I found them baffling as a kid, but loved the depth of them. I still enjoy Gemfire and Aerobiz.
New Horizons is definitely a fun game. I think the Round Earth Society is more involved in the Otto's (guy from Holland) story, where I believe you can go there and learn things as well as provide information. Been a while since I played the game, and I usually go with Ali's story for the interesting trading system.
Nobunagas ambition: iron triangle o ps2 is a great entry to KOEI strategy games. Plus it also includes an ingame glossary explaining every single thing.
It would be great if they made a game that was like if New Horizon and Assassin's Creed IV had a baby.
Sunless Sea on Steam is pretty similar, and quite addicting once you master its learning curve.
This.
SIHA: SO, STAR TRADERS: FRONTIERS.
KARL MARX: HE's NOT TALKING ABOUT A GAME. [WHISPERS IN SIHA's EAR. SIHA IS REALLY TIRED OF PRETENDING TO BE OVERWHELMED FROM HOW DUMBFOUNDED HE IS.]
I liked both, although UW doesn't hold up well, at the time before UW2 it was great. A blast from the past.
i remember playing this i really enjoy this kind of game i wish theres a game like this in this gaming gen
First screen
"I am Drunk."
My sides are in orbit.
Haha that's awesome!!
Yusblind "it's nice to see you drunk"
Comment thief! xD
And the character says it with such a whimsical, faraway look too.
I really want to get into this series. Can all of the Uncharted Waters / Daikoudai Jidai games be played on PC (regardless of language)? Or are there exclusive console instalments (ports/remakes not implied)?
I am Drunk.
My ancestors were...
Dunks.
I love both games tbh. UW 1 has its own charms, but you forgot something. It was on the NES as well.
The crew rations is rather simple -- you can reduce rations to save food for longer voyages, but it slowly degrades the crew's health/strength. Say for example, you've got a ship and crew that uses 5 food per day, you can cut rations by 20% and use 4 food per day, but you'll notice if you bring up the L/R buttons while sailing that the crew's health% starts degrading each day.
2:20 Looks like D&D dice rolls; the total is different so you browse through them looking for a high total before redistributing.
both these games are legit educational games. i learned so much about geography and the age of exploration from these games
The second game looks amazing. I'll check it out for sure.
I wish KOEI was still making stuff like this. I know they made an MMO version a while ago but that just isn't my thing. A single player version of this and Inindo would be incredible.
The second looks cool and I remember hearing about it a long time ago, I think. I just think I might be one of those people who would get overwhelmed by all the things you can do like you said.
This game was one of the best. I played this on MS DOS when I was a little kid.
New Horizons is definitely worth it. It's a game that sits proudly in my collection. It does feel like there is a bit too much depth in there, so it's a game that you have to really be willing to sink time into in order to feel like you know what's going on. Which makes things like playing Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, or Mega Man X very appealing in comparison to our simple, lizard brains.
"Go right, kill bad guys, don't die!"
Nothing wrong with that format of game at all, of course, which is why it's so appealing, but sometimes it's nice to invest some time and really get lost in a deep game.
Great video as always.
make a video on Big Sky Trooper! I see no one on youtube talking about this game for the SNES
i love this game. played it a ton when it came out.
New Horizons has one of my favorite SNES boxarts.
Happy belated New Year!
Thanks, same to you
This is a game that we somehow lost as kids but for the longest i had the most vague memories of it. I think my older sister was the only one of us who knew how to play it.
Best sword in the game was the bluecrescent you may get that in japan but timbuktu had something food. it was a long river ride? hard to say map so big and all that trading, I pirated and bought cannons mad crew on the galley because you board them after the grape shot?
How about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or P.T.O. (Pacific Theater of Operations) series?
yes please!!!
PTO II was a favorite of mine.
I played through New Horizens last year and fully enjoyed it.
This game was just amazing. I played it when I was a kid. I couldn't find a copy of it anywhere for sale. Just one at the video story I would rent every weekend. Anyone know a good emulator for it? I had one but it kept crashing.
SNES9X is probably still the best one for being accurate and simple. ZSNES is probably still the most popular one. I haven't kept up though.
I played the first game and loved it. Never got to play the 2nd one sadly, it looks amazing. I just hope they didn't make the story arcs linear. The open word aspect of the first game is what really hooked me.
It's open world...ish. You can explore the vast world to the point of losing grip with the game's objectives, but there's not much in the way of side quests. It's more like a true sandbox where your imagination fills the gaps.
0:15 Is it just me or is Aerobiz's boxart bloody amazing? Though, if I saw that on the shelf as a kid I'd be like "why is this a game"? But I have a game called Aeroporter on my 3DS so the idea of a game that I'm guessing has to do with airports isn't so crazy an idea to me anymore.
I do remember playing this on the NES version, where it may have been better than the SNES version. I never got the physical version of 2, but have played it since, and agree that it is better than the first game.
Gotta let people know, the noob start that always kills the game. People tend to die immediately when they depart at sea till they give up the game and think the game is bug. If they didn't realize they need to stock up food and water. That happened to me 30 years ago when I first played t the game. Then years later I finally try the game again and learnt how to play properly. That's where the fun starts.
Thanks for the guidance in your final words. I've tried Gemfire and the earlier Nobunaga games before and just couldn't get into them. They are exactly like you said, very dry, I always imagined those as the sort of games an old man would play while his model trains tooted along in the background.
Gemfire is an excellent game and nobunaga is probably good too, but those Japanese names get me confused and discouraged to play
Id love to see a "Is Metal Marines Worth Playing Today? video. Great video as always Happy New Years brother, keep up the awesome SNES Drunkness in 2018 !!!
Thanks Zack
Yahzic on the playlist for the sound track of the new xbox game reboot with space ships is going to be sick
W
Id like to see videos on pitfall-the mayan adventure and the jetsons
The music from 7:01-7:53 sounds super familiar to me even though I haven't played this game. Is this song from another game?
No, that's from the game.
I love most of the Koei NES and SNES games. I actually owned the NES port of Uncharted Waters, and rented the SNES port but once I got New Horizons I didn't bother getting the original. I usually played as Otto or Catalina.
Damn, looks like a JRPG version of Pirates Gold (by Sid Meier) on Megadrive. Very cool
thanks, i've wondered for so long how to even pronounce koei.
If I remember correctly, studying at The Round Earth Society increased a player's luck stats. It was a fill-in for a church/mosque, with studying being analogous to praying, that probably allowed KOEI to follow Nintendo's rule on avoiding religious imagery while staying true to the theme of a game set in the Age of Exploration.
Man Kelly Bennett in the date of mine and game for a long time I used to play aerobiz and New Horizons and what's funny is I play New Horizons Lake several times on a ROM to
Yo, if you guys like these games (RPG plus Sailing-Trade Simulator), then you might be interested in an upcoming indie game, Paper-Soul Theater! It takes place on land, so there is no sailing, but otherwise it seems similar. It's gonna be a character-driven game in which you play as a traveling merchant. The battle system mixes action with turn-taking, and is like a cross between old-school RPGs and Tactic RPGs. Most bizarre of all is that it doubles as a horror game! It's worth keeping an eye on and I hope SNES Drunk plays it on his SteamDrunk series one day since he likes retro RPGs.
It doubles as a horror game? That sounds incredibly weird
SNES drunk Do you have any interest in horror games? Not sure if you ever reviewed one.
My GF is huge into horror stuff, new and old. She's playing through Evil Within 2 right now. I like some of it like Silent Hill 2 but it's not usually something I'm that into.
I still remember being like 12 and sinking countless hours into Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. I pretty well had no clue what I was doing at first but after a few dozens hours I somehow managed to figure it out. I look back on it fondly
ive always had problems with this game 's sound popping at random times. even the rom via emulation still had the popping.
Edit: Don't mind me. UA-cam likes recommending me old videos, and I didn't notice the date hahaha. Still, I stand by my comment, and 100% agree with SNESDrunk. Go for UW2 if you have a choice
Hi of I'm not mistaken, the earth society pays as you discover new lands, particularly useful with the cartographer character.
New Horizons and Brandish were the only Koei games I used to rent. Inindo's not bad either. Beyond those games, it's much harder to get into the SNES Koei library. New Horizons is definitely the best of the bunch and easiest to get into, IMO. Great video.
Have you tried Liberty or Death? I really want that one to be good, but feel I will be disapointed.
Hm, actually I have not. While I've played several of the historical Japanese war sims, I tend to steer clear of Civil War games. I hope you find it soon and hope it's good!
Revolutionary War game, actually, and it's very good. I still play it every now and then today. Similar to the ROTTK games but I always enjoyed it more.
Speaking of which, the first Koei game I ever played was the NES version of Genghis Khan in 1989 as a Blockbuster Video game rental. When I found the SNES Koei game Genghis Khan II, I nearly lost mind. Went right out and bought a used version in 1993. That one's even better than the first one.
My strategy was to go to Lubeck and stock up on silver, sell it all in East Africa and invest until they sell gold (fun fact: the “gold” commodity was actually “slaves” in the original version. Changed for obvious reasons). It doesn’t take much investment. Fill up on gold, sail to Japan, sell the gold, restock on silver, return to East Africa, sell the silver, fill up on gold, return to Lubeck. Repeat. You’ll have a fleet of Tekkosen and Full-Rigged ships in no time. I even had a bunch of ships stored at every capital. Copper hulled La Reales for max speed, or barges/frigates for max capacity. To make it fair once my guys had ridiculous combat levels, I’d sometimes sail a fleet of sloops or even light galleys.
Side note: the “Round Earth Society” is used to raise your hidden luck stat. Donating 51% of your gold on hand will raise your luck by 1 level. It’s obviously better to do this when you’re relatively poor. Like “slaves” being changed to “gold” the Round Earth Society was simply the “Church” in the original version.
What games do you think will appear on the new N64 console surely soon to be released?
Yes, surely soon.
Watching this it kinda makes me wonder what you would think of the Fire Emblem games.
I remember buying Katana from Japan and became a pirate with Katarina and seized all the merchant ships and sold them for profit. Then later every ports in Europe I had Battle ships built and was ready for full time battle with British navy. Ah... good ol days with this game. This was a gem in SNES.
I cant tell you how many times I rented the first Uncharted Waters. Really enjoyed that game. After watching this video and reading the comments - I cant wait to try New Horizons
