  • The Titanic. A ship known throughout the world for its tragic end. There is possibly no other ship in history with a more famous name. However, when you think about it, what do you really know of the Titanic?
This book is a wonderful exploration of the birth, anatomy, life, death and aftermath of the tragic vessel. In this part, we explore it's birth - the track record and history of the White Star Line company and it's crew (The Captain's crash record will astound you). In addition, we will learn about how it was designed, and compare it to other ships in it's day. Right from the off, we may discover that the tragic accident may not have been as much of a surprise as it was...

You're right it was leading to a preventable disaster. Negligence at best, but a lot of people won't have it.

Unfortunately, this book appears to be casting Captain Smith in a negative light. Regarding the Coptic, the ship that ran aground on Mai Island near Rio de Janeiro, it actually ran aground in 1889, not 1890, under the command of Captain Burton. Captain Smith took command of the Coptic only after this incident, and his tenure was limited to the return voyage, which passed without incident. In 1909, with the Adriatic II it must be blamed due to the combined effect of a rising tide and the discharge of water ballast. Many of the events that occurred during his career were not really directly his fault, but still happened when he was in common/onboard. Nevertheless, he was seen as a wonderful Captain with passengers trusting him.
