Thanks for the great review. I gave my 830 to my son and got myself a 1030 Plus. The louder tone on the 1030 Plus is very very nice. Sometimes with wind or traffic noise the 830 becomes inaudible. Also after a few rides in I got used to the large screen of the 1030 Plus. Now the 830 looks tiny, lol. I wondered how I survived with such a small screen on the 830. The main reason why I upgraded is because while the 830 is readable on smooth roads it becomes unreadable when riding on rough roads like gravel roads. The 1030 Plus is a nice upgrade over the 830 in that respect.
Funny, I just got another 830 after losing one last year. It is indeed small compared to the 1030 Plus! Both great devices but each definitely have their place 👍
Re-route. Thank god. This was the biggest pain with going off course. The Garmin starts to panic immediately asking you to u turn even if you know you are on a route that connects to your original course In a few hundred meters.
I just disabled rerouting on my 1030+. It just confused me, and the screen is so large and being touchscreen it's easy to work out how to rejoin the route. No such rerouting problem on the Bolt V2, which is more intuitive.
Why isn't there Trailforks on a smartwatch? I want to look at my wrist for a trail map and not have to take out my phone every time Edit: I just went and bought a handlebar mount for my phone
Hi Des, thanks again for another great overview for both devices. Do you think that Garmin will extend the new navigation capabilities to the 1030 at some point or will memory and processor capabilities be a limitation with the older unit?
Does the Edge 830 Plus offer the 3x re-routing options, and can the Edge Remote Control be used to select one of those options? Thanks for covering the Gamin series with these great reviews !
I just ordered the garmin edge explore. Is the navigation on explore similar to this, especiallythe mountain biking stuff. I don't need all the training stuff these higher end units have.
Love ya work Des. I personally have a real issue with getting lost in bike parks. Is the 1030+ that much better than the 830 to justify the extra bucks? What do you recon?
Navigation capabilities will be nearly the same - I'd say it's more about usability and size. The 1030/1030 Plus may be easier to use and see due to it's larger screen but it's also just a larger device, which for MTB can be an issue to keep it out of the way. Thanks!
I appreciate your prompt reply. So the 1030+ then.. i agree size matters when navigating new trails.. I’ll mount it on the top tube just behind the stem out of the way yet usable.
Hey Des, like video's but have a question about this one. I still have the edge 800. But would like to upgrade to a secondhand 1030 plus. What i'm missing in the 800 is that you don't get navigation warnings to go left or right when mountainbiking. Is this a feature that works on the 1030plus or am i'm doing something wrong?? Greetz
hmm I think I'm still going with Garmin edge 830 model, much more compact. You do get ALL maps excluding Asia, but maps are not the issue really. Initially I thought that it will be an issue when navigation come into play having smaller screen on 830 compared to 1030 where you see just a little bit more ahead, but it's really not the problem at all, and people having the experience with 1030 jumping to 830 or 530 can confirm that.
Great review. Question - I only have a chromebook and Garmin Express won't work on it. What features do I lose by not being able to plug it into an actual computer?
Hi, may I know how can I troubleshoot as my distance and avg speed are not moving from start to end of ride on 1030 plus.. I have even factory set it... FYI, today is my 1st ride using 1030 plus... thks
Garmin maps still looks like a Nintendo 8-bit inspired interface. I literally had flashbacks to my “GPS V” circa 2003. It remains a much more viable option to buy a cheap HD Android phone for your fitness device ... and the UI feels 2020 👌🏻
There is a really great comparison between the Karoo 2 vs Garmin 1030 vs Wahoo Roam on UA-cam - I’m sorry to say that Garmin innovation is really fallen behind when compared to the Karoo 2 user interface which has a decent resolution, graphics and refresh rate. Humans from 2020 don’t deserve to suffer from Garmins “Nintendo 8 bit” technology 🤨
The 1030 and 1030 Plus are really nice to use for navigation since it has the large screen, but the 830 is a bit smaller which is a bit more convenient from a size standpoint, plus it is less susceptible to damage due to it's size.
Very good review and to the point. There is one aspect missing here though: can the fields on the screen be configured. Let's say I want to have my heart rate displayed on the same screen as the navigation directions so that I don't need to keep switching screens. Is this possible with this device?
Yes. You can have 2 customisable data fields on the map screen (as well as the mini elevation profile) - and all the other pure data screens are fully customisable and you can have as many or as few as you like. There are also widgets in tje IQ store that provide cool custom graphical layouts fed by the underlying data. This is the best bike GPS I’ve used, by a long way. Blows the 1000 away.
Are these devices more stable? My Garmin Edge 800 looses GPS and takes forever to connect, even in open areas. Also, do you have to buy maps, or does Garmin connect update them?
What is the difference between the 1030 Plus and 830 besides the size display and battery life? I’m not sure which one to buy for a racing bike... what is your recommendation?
Feature differences will be negligible between the two. The 1030 Plus provides a larger display which makes it easier to use for navigation, but the 830 still works great. Size is a big consideration.
The 1030 Plus is the most current and feature packed Garmin Edge to date, but size should also be a consideration as the 1030/1030 Plus are the size of small phones.
I am using fenix 6 watch. Does garmin has a basic computer which can get feed from the watch for HR, gps, speed etc? Getting edge 1030 seems to duplicate whatever functions I already have from the watch.
The most basic would be the Edge 130 or 130 Plus which both have the Extended Display functionality that would just display the data that is being collected on your watch, however it still can record independently if you wish. ua-cam.com/video/-4JPh5BWF-U/v-deo.html
@@DesFit Thanks for your comment. Do you know if the extended view on 130 can be customized according to the data I want to see or it is fixed? Does it works with bike mode instead of just Tri? Btw I love your channel and is a subscriber. Good job!
The main thing with a bike computer is that it's probably going to be a lot safer mounted on your handlebars than a phone. Then, you also have the additional capability of connecting a host of external sensors. Also, the screen on these sort of devices are optimized for readability in direct sunlight where a phone can have glare in certain situations. And then I'll mention it, but battery life :)
DesFit I got the QuadLock for my iPhone and that thing is solid. But yeah the sensor thing is probably the thing. Although there are some good Bluetooth sensors. But thank you for your reply.
Porque en el mío no salen los colores tan vivos se ve como muy tipo de gris aunque configuró el color pero no son vivos y no sale el tipo de Lagos tan azules como el tullo

Take my money!! ;)
Nice work! I really like your videos, keep up the great work
Thanks a bunch!!
Love the other acceptable reasons to deviate from the path.
Micro USB in 2020 come on Garmin !!!!!!
The 1030 plus looks pretty cool! Can you please do a comparison video on the difference between this one and the 530?
I'll see what I can do!
DesFit thanks! I’m just getting started cycling and looking at getting something like this.
Nice!

Great review of the new Garmin Edge 1030 Plus...more concise and to the point than that other guy :-)
We have different styles but definitely appreciate each other’s work! 😄 Thanks though!!

Does Garmin or any other companies make a screen protector and or case of some sort?
Thanks for posting as I'm looking for one. I live in Brighton, Colorado area. What about you?

More map detail would necessitate more memory. Maps can take up a bunch of storage.
Also the firmware..looks not friendly and outdated as always for an expensive decice.

This is quite pricey but the 1030 and 830 are about the same price where I live. Which would you choose between those two?

A few bugs... Routes/Course will not show on the device when export from Basecamp and it will not install the Openmtbmaps... :-/

Maps are included. The original 1030 wasn’t as good for me but the 1030 Plus has been very stable for me since day one.

By the way, thanks for answering and for the review!
Why do you speak using the future tense ("...going to have...")? Does this mean that the device you had was a only prototype?
Bad habit of mine, going to have to work on that.
Can you confirm a magnetometer (compass) in the 1030 plus?
I saw this in another review but not on the garmin site or anywhere else
It has a compas yes

What is the watch strap you use on the garmin? :-)
Here ya go: geni.us/fenix6watchband (Amazon affiliate link)
Hi can i use a Garmin watch as a heart rate monitor with 1030 plus
or do i have to use heart rate strap
Yup! A lot of Garmin watches have the capability of broadcasting HR.
I am a beginning user. I need to understand how to create a route, share it with my group, and use it to navigate.
Haha! Cut-Across. There's a cheating function in the 1030 Plus. :)
$600.00 might as use an older Galaxy phone, or iPhone. Bigger better screen on an old Galaxy S9, likely faster cpu also. (nice rewiew though. thanks.)
Convince me to get this over a phone
@Zhiwel Yang .. .use your phone with the Quad Lock
