  • 'How to' remove the alternator - SAAB 9-3 2.0 petrol engine.
    The same basic engine is used in Vauxhall & Opel Vectra - they may be similar.
    This covers Saab 9-3 1.8t, 2.0t and 2.0T 4 cyl petrols (B207 series)
    This is an awkward job - not especially difficult though. Allow about an hour for removal and same for replacement, plus rebuild time (I replaced the brushes and regulator in mine in less than 15 minutes - I've a video for that - see below).
    Also make sure you've got the part number of the alternator off the back cover before removing it - I cover that in the video.
    Worn brushes is the most common fault. Mine lasted 110,000 miles. About typical for brush life (say, 80 - 120,000).
    How to change the brushes on a Bosch alternator:
    • BOSCH Alternator Regul...
    And here I show you how to test any alternator and battery. Do this regularly and you'll know when to change either without suffering a breakdown:

    I couldn't reach the square hole on the belt tensioner with my ratchet, so I put a stick from underneath against the entire tension pulley, which I lifted up with a jack-screw.
    Thank you! Very helpful video.

    Thanks Cyd, your video was really helpful and thanks to you I have changed the alternator on my ‘03 Aero. A couple of comments that others my find helpful ;
    1. I found there is no need to remove/disturb anything on the intake side. The ecu can be disconnected and removed by sliding it out to the left.
    2. I had a Big Problem getting a 3/8 ratchet onto the tensioner. There just isn’t room so £20 serpentine belt tool from Amazon did the trick. Had to shorten the length to get it in but £20 well spent and potentially saved hours of frustration fiddling around under a car supported on Jack stands which is something I have never felt that comfortable about
    Thanks again

    You Sir, are a star. Thank you very much.
    I am just a little wary of the that coolant T-connection as i broke one just by touching it whilst they removed the top cover on my SAAB during an oil change. Luckily i found one locally. Also, lucky that the car was not running.
    Amazing car nonetheless.

    sorry folks something I didn't cover. Please make sure you catch the lost coolant in a receptacle of some sort. I had a large drip tray below the car. DO NOT put the old coolant down any surface drain: flush it away down the toilet so it goes to treatment.

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  4 роки тому

      @Tony da brindisi sorry Tony, I never saw your question. No, there is usually no fuse between alternator output terminal and battery. yes, a parallel lead is a good idea - do the same for the negative too.
      I do hope you got sorted, I feel bad for it being so long

    Excellent videos Cyd, I have a question my Saab 93 is a 09 plate Diesel TID and the alternator is at the back of the engine so is the ECU is it pretty much the same principal as shown in yours, in taking out and replacing? Thanks

  • @MattFaggDotCom
    @MattFaggDotCom 3 роки тому +1

    Thanks Cyd. My alternator has just died (2004 Aero). Ordered a new one and will try an fix it myself. Great tip about the 3/8 ratchet - this should save me having to buy a tension bar. Question - In hindsight, would it have been better draining the coolant first? I am unsure if I need to do this or not.

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  3 роки тому +1

      Also with hindsight, a 3/8 breaker would be easier than a ratchet because of being longer, something like this amzn.to/30C3Y8l. Yes you need to drain some coolant out but not much. A simple syphon pump like this amzn.to/30C9zeI would be just the thing to get as much as possible out of the expansion tank before disconnecting the pipes.

    Anyone kno why my serpentine belt tool is not fitting in the 3/8 hole in the tensioner pulley

  • @45graham45
    @45graham45 2 місяці тому

    Helpful hint: Often, the threaded studs which the plastic nuts secure to are corroded & will snap when you rotate the nuts. If this happens, the snapped studs (which are welded to the chassis) will need to be ground off. Centre punch where these were. Pilot drill these (3mm maybe), then drill to 12mm. (note you may need to wiggle the 12mm drill bit in each hole to make fractionally bigger) Paint these areas with some kind of primer or Hammerite to prevent corrosion. Place a 6mm Well nut (google it) in each hole. Replace wheel arch liner & use FLANGED HEXAGON HEAD BOLTS STAINLESS STEEL M6 16mm long to thread into the Well nuts. The Well nuts have a 13mm rubber cylindrical bit surrounding a metal m6 thread. The rubber expands, gripping the 12mm holes in the chassis that you drilled.

      Hi Framus, thanks for watching and the nice words. Don't forget to subscribe, like and share.
      IIRC I mentioned it in the video, but I'm sure it was around 110,000 miles. Which is about right. Design life of cars varies from 10yr/100k to 12yr/150k. Don't know for sure about Saabs. And did you know the brushes wear faster the more power you use from the alternator? I drive with headlights on at all times, so that probably contributed to a slightly early life failure. I show changing the brushes in another video.

    Probably sounds stupid but I’m installing an alternator. Someone took off the old one, I can’t seem to find wire that connects to the alternator. I connected the harness. Where does the wire come from? I’m sure it’s hanging there somewhere I just don’t see it. Thanks!

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  4 роки тому

      Sorry I didn't see your question. I do hope you've sorted it.
      The wire will be a thick one and come from the battery. Don't allow it to hang there - find it and secure it. If it touches the engine it could short the battery - NOT good.

      Mr Mr Oh yes. If your car has a 140 and you fitted a 120, then it might only be a problem in middle of winter when all the heaters, lights etc etc are on. Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.
      When you've fitted it, test it as per my battery/alternator video to make sure it's outputting enough - especially if it's a 2nd hand one.
