St. Anger was made in a very dark time for Metallica. Jason (the bassist that replaced Cliff) left the band, James went into rehab, Lars was frustrated that Metallica was dying, and the whole Napster lawsuit shit. The band was very frustrated with each other too and it seemed more likely that they were going to break up. They made St. Anger as a result of it which narrates their frustrations with life. It wasn't an album meant for the fans it was a album made for Metallica. Not a lot of people will understand the album unless you've been through the same shit they went through.

George and Ryan during the Spit out the Bone reaction: "I want to hear a Metallica song that I won't like! I want that Smoke!!"
George and Ryan after hearing St. Anger: "This hurts, man!"
    Now you know!
Seriously though, during the recording of this album, keep in mind that they had no bass player. Jason Newsted quit the band prior to this album, so their producer, bob Rock, filled in, and once again, you can't hear the bass. He was busy having to play the bass tracks and not being able to properly mix it, so it sounds a horribly detuned metal version of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band from the Muppet Show. James went into rehab during this, and so for a long time, Metallica was only Lars and Kirk. As well, Nu-Metal was huge then, which meant the lack of guitar solos. This entire album had no guitar solos. None. It was a very hard listen when it came out, and quite honestly, Frantic was the best song on the album. So if St. Anger was the worst song on the worst album, and is the TITLE TRACK of their worst album, that says a lot about this album.

I HIGHLY recommend watching the documentary "Some Kind of Monster". It is an extremely fascinating award-winning documentary that follows the recording process of St. Anger It is one of the most insightful and interesting "behind the scenes" music related documentaries ever made. The film started as something that was meant to be a short project following them in the studio for a couple weeks, but they ended up filming them for almost 2 years through the entire process. Bascially, Metallica was in absolute turmoil at the time of this record. The band members didn't get along and were constantly fighting, as well as dealing with personal problems (such as James' addiction and anger issues). The documentary shows the band doing things such as going to therapy together and expressing extremely raw emotion towards each other while writing the album. The growth and rebirth of the band by the end of the documentary is truly amazing. While St. Anger itself ended up being a pretty crappy record, it was absolutely necessary for the survival of the band. The album is quite literally an expression of them putting all their cards on the table in terms of their anger towards each other. Without St. Anger, we would have never received the critically well-received albums that followed it. I hope you guys get a chance to watch it, because it completely explains the thought process behind the album and helps you come to terms with why it sounds the way it does. I still don't like the music, but I accept it now.

Lars drumming sounds fuller and not so much if that trash can pop! and Roberts bass sounds better as well. I loved this album from the first time I heard it. I had watches the documentary “Some Kind of Monster” about the band and James battles with alcoholism and drug addiction BEFORE I saw the videos to “Frantic” and “St. Anger” so the stripped down scrappy garage band thing the are doing here makes sense as an artistic statement about what they were going through at the time. I also am not a metal head, I’m a hard rock-funk rock dude (Funkadelic, Bad Brains, Living Colour, 24-7 Spyz) so this spoke to me. This was their first album with Robert Trujillo and he can groove some. Liked the stripped down sound of this song, the trash can drums and the energy that fit the lyrics. Punk in a way. The video is perfect for the music + lyrics. Different, progressive sound without the guitar solos etc. it was rickety sounding on purpose, it’s raw emotion and, anger and self-hate that goes along with one fighting addiction 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾. Loved it, but I am not a “down since 1980” Metallica fan so I had no expectations when I heard this in 2003 or 2004.🖤🖤🖤

I unironically think Death Magnetic is better than AFJA

You can just tell they were having fun on that album. I loved it even more when I started learning its songs on guitar, because the expert-ness of the compositions and fun-ness of them really showed through

Kevin I know music is suppose to be subjective but just no, not in this case. DM isn’t comparable to AJFA lol not even remotely close

Been a Metallica fan since 1987 and I don’t care what anyone thinks, I liked this album when it came out and I still like to today.
