I've been getting praise for how good my food is recently. I dont qant to tell anyone that I usually just type "Chef John [ingredient]" whenever I want to cook something nice. You have saved many dinners in my home Chef John!
My Grandparents had a bakery, and they would make this, but called it ..Pull a Part coffee cake. No fruit or nuts.. Just a lot of cinnamon and sugar after rolling balls into melted butter then into the cin. sugar. I still make it for Christmas morning. Going to try this one.
To add xtra yumminess...add a small amount of cream cheese into the center of each square of dough. Seal up the dough around the cream cheese. Continue the recipe as shown. I always used to sprinkle a little xtra cinnamon sugar onto each layer as I filled the pan. But the cream cheese takes this to the next level!!
If you have young kids, 5+ yrs, you can make this with them using Pilsbury pre-made dough. Get two cannisters of it, lay out one sheet, scatter berries and nuts, top with second sheet, roll together lightly, then roll-up into a log, slice-off pieces for balls, roll etc and proceed as with Chef John's caramel and bake. It's 'dumbing it down', I know, but kids love it, and it gets them involved in baking.
This looks great and I will definitely be making it this Christmas. Now also seems a good time to thank you Chef John for helping me finally overcome my fear of yeast bread. It was 6 or 7 years ago now. I had struggled with making them for years but your calm and relaxed instruction is what finally got me there. You are a treasure.
you don’t know how happy I am that this channel is still active 🥹 I remember your videos from when I was just starting to cook, and life happen… and just remember you again now that I will be making onion rings, and seen your videos dates 14 years ago. oh my, I have been on my first business, married, bear and raised a child, pandemic came, go, and here I am coming back to your onion ring recipe… oh my, days are long, but years are short 💕
Wow, my middle school home ec teacher taught me this in the 80's. Never made it since then! She used those Pilsbury cannisters with cinnamon, sugar and butter.
Ok, I've been making Pillsbury biscuits into monkey bread for so long, never even considered making the dough from scratch or coating in a sauce after. Thank you for the suggestion! And the fruit is a lovely touch too! Edit: spelling
So I just had a magical moment...I feel I am supposed to make this and let it sit out for 2 days to become stale and use this stale fabulous monkey bread in my Christmas Breakfast Bread Pudding 🎄Thank you!!!💫
Awesome!! thank you for this brilliant idea!! I felt frustrated that I can’t make this bread because of all the sugar, butter.. then you came up with this version! Definitely making it now!
Something I always liked about monkey bread was it's simplicity so I don't think I'll be going this route. But the change in flavors with the cranberry is a great idea!
My mom has made this for Christmas every year since I was a kid. Minus the cranberries and walnuts. We did do walnuts a while, but we were all picky kids that didn’t like them. We look forward to this every year, can’t wait!
This looks like the most holiday treat ever. Monkey bread is always a treat, but this is gourmet simian bread to swing through the trees for! Happy holidays,Chef John. Your recipes never disappoint!
my mom made the best monkey bread. I don't think I could do cranberries or nuts in it. And hers was drenched in brown sugar, butter which made a super gooey caramel on the outside. it was heaven.
This is the most fun thing to eat. And it's yummy. I just do a simple cinnamon one with butter. You can also make it with refrigerator rolls if you want to do it the lazy way.
His monkey bread recipe is a total mess and doesn’t match the link. If you’re going to do it you need to hold 80g of the flour back. You’ll understand after you watch it. Follow the verbal directions he gives during the video.
speaking of the john from preppy kitchen how i make my chocolate yule logs for chirstmas i use a bit of a mix of the recipes from your's and his your filling and frosting and his cake mix so i nickname it the john and john yule log
I love monkey bread but with pecans. I've never made it, myself but I know a woman who makes amazing monkey bread. I buy it out of the frozen food section.
Kinda reminds me of Grandma's fruit cakes. They work great for propping open doors when it gets hot. She's been gone 20 years and the cakes haven't changed a bit. Yours looks good tho.
My family has had monkey bread for Christmas morning as long as I remember, we use biscuits instead of bread so it doesn't need to have any rest periods.
My husband doesn't like cranberries (more for me!). But I have been saving orange peels in the freezer to make a batch of candied orange peel. And I think that might do well in this monkey bread.
I don’t think we call this Monkey Bread in Canada. My mom would make for Christmas morning but instead of putting additions in the dough she would put maraschino cherries, raisins and walnuts among the balls. Very pretty and picky people could avoid the cherries.
I made this today! It came out a little drier looking than yours -- a LOT of the syrup bubbled up and out in the oven, and some of the pieces puffed up so big that they fell out and over. I'm guessing my pan was a little shallow. .... buuuut it tastes good! I made a bit more syrup to drizzle on top at the end for presentation
I just made this recipe. But my yeast was expired so the balls didn't proof properly, they were a little more dense than I would like, but it was still delicious. It's impossible for something with that much sugar and butter to not be delicious. Haha!
1992 I'm hosting my first Thanksgiving with 23 family members. My MIL kept telling me all week about her fabulous monkey bread. After the fifth time I finally asked what was monkey bread? She looked at me liked I had a phoney black card. Sorry never heard of it.
I wonder if pistachios could be substituted for the walnuts? I make a cranberry- pistachio biscotti for the holidays that looks festive. Might need to do some experimenting.
gracias! necesitaba ver una receta de monkey bread hecha por usted Maestro, para atreverme a hacerla! me gustaria agregar cardamomo al azucar, cree que sea un error? 😬😅
Once again… a wonderful recipe! Question… we have a person in the family with an egg allergy… so if I leave it out, would it significantly affect the recipe?
Could you make a savory version? I was thinking of caprese monkey bread with sun-dried tomato in some of the balls and mozzarella in others… Maybe a balsamic drizzle?
Cheater tip for you all... If you don't have the time/inclination to make your own dough, use canned biscuit dough and cut the biscuits in quarters. Then proceed with the cinnamon sugar mix and the brown sugar + butter bath.
A touch of butter *adds a full cup*. Can't wait to make this looks amazing.
I actually laughed out loud at that point 🤣
Honestly, it’s my favorite Chef John bit lol
lol I noticed that then looked down at the comments... yes top comment, good job everyone
@@stilwellpianostudio7813 Knew I wouldn't be the only one, lol
I knew there has to be a name for half-a-pound/ 2 sticks of butter - and today I learned it!
When I was a child, I would jump around and scream like a monkey any time I ate monkey bread. I will make this and reenact to my wife for tradition
😂😂😂
As you should!
"My love, I wish to share the dance of my people..."
Don't expect to be sticking your banana anywhere.
You are after all the Agnes Moorehead of devolving for bread.
I've been getting praise for how good my food is recently. I dont qant to tell anyone that I usually just type "Chef John [ingredient]" whenever I want to cook something nice.
You have saved many dinners in my home Chef John!
I found out that I love monkey bread a couple of years ago, and you're absolutely correct: Once the monkey bread comes out, the place becomes unruly.
A touch of butter...😂 5:20

Or a chocolate chip

I too love butter
Wow, my middle school home ec teacher taught me this in the 80's. Never made it since then! She used those Pilsbury cannisters with cinnamon, sugar and butter.
That's how my mother makes it. I just made her home made tonight. :)
@@Rem694u2 nice! 😊
I was just thinking that. 😊
This is just great for a crowd, I think I’ll use pistachios with the cranberries, the colours will pop . Thank you Chef John ❤
I can't wait to find out how much cayenne pepper he adds to this recipe.
He lightly dusted the walnuts with cayenne so nobody would know.
I am the point with Chef John that if he added cayenne to this I would 100% follow him down that path. 😂
Just give it the "oooolle tapa tapa"
Preppy kitchen is my second most favorite baking channel, next to this Chef John dude.

Good luck letting it last two HOURS, let alone two days. Happy Christmas 🎄
@OrlaQuirk I'll have to do a double or triple batch 👏👏🤣
That will be fabulous! 😋
A “touch” of butter = 2 sticks 😂
Wow! I’m imagining a cheesy savory version with Parmesan, olives and olive oil, sundried tomatoes and the herbs of your choice 🧀 😋
Someone after my own heart. In the member's live chat, Chef will mention me thinking about how to make it savory.
garlic bread
Awesome!! thank you for this brilliant idea!! I felt frustrated that I can’t make this bread because of all the sugar, butter.. then you came up with this version! Definitely making it now!
My tummy approves of this video.
Holy moly, that looks decadent! I'm going to make it for our potluck at work next week!
I'd make it for my family but I don't trust my coworkers' hands lol
I think Chef John needs to be nominated for the “Nobel Piece Prize”!
Ohhhh boyyy what a treat, it’s perfect and just in time for the holidays 🎉
I’ll never forget when my girlfriend sent me a pic of the monkey bread she made and in the photo she had pre-pulled-apart every piece. Mortifying
That's IKEA monkey bread
oh nah 💀
What a monster
Monster. Your girlfriend is a monster lol
I really 'love' how guys tell mother-in-law jokes about their girlfriends. Like, they pretend they're the smart one.
Something I always liked about monkey bread was it's simplicity so I don't think I'll be going this route. But the change in flavors with the cranberry is a great idea!

We have something similar here in Austria called Kärntner Reindling, translates roughly to carinthian pot cake.
As a certified bread monkey I approve of this creation
Omg yesterday I was just thinking about making some monkey bread!! Can’t wait to try this 🙏
This looks like the most holiday treat ever. Monkey bread is always a treat, but this is gourmet simian bread to swing through the trees for! Happy holidays,Chef John. Your recipes never disappoint!
I haven't seen a better recipe than yours yet, thank you very much!
I've always wanted this recipe! Thank you Chef John! My family loves ur mash potatoes au gratn! We love you chef 👨🍳!
Love how you devote time to all the classic recipes. As you should! Miss your podcast. Hope all is well! 🎉❤😊
Highly addictive barely describes monkey bread. I always want more.
another brilliant technique I did not know about.. thanks for the video !
You, and John, from Preppy Kitchen, are my favorite chefs! Thank you for this recipe, it's perfect. I'll be making it for Thanksgiving!
my mom made the best monkey bread. I don't think I could do cranberries or nuts in it. And hers was drenched in brown sugar, butter which made a super gooey caramel on the outside. it was heaven.
"Rogue cranberries." 😂
I just watched John Kanell's video just before this one. He was making stuffing. I let him know Chef John!
Great Thanksgiving contribution!
Judging solely on the amount of butter and sugar involved - this will taste absolutely amazing. 😀
This is the most fun thing to eat. And it's yummy. I just do a simple cinnamon one with butter.
You can also make it with refrigerator rolls if you want to do it the lazy way.
"Before you make monkey bread, you have to make monkey balls" That's going on my Christmas card
Absolutely amazing!
Monkey balls? Can I make a Monkey Loaf instead! I like John Kanel's channel! Will do!

Chef John, are you covering your resting dough with a shower cap? Frickin genius!!
I love monkey bread but with pecans. I've never made it, myself but I know a woman who makes amazing monkey bread. I buy it out of the frozen food section.
Love John - The Preppy kitchen. ❤
I've always failed at making monkey bread for some reason. Thank you for this video it's super helpful
This was never my cup of tea, but this looks great.
this is called M-Bread now
booo
Why?
I can't wait to try this!
5:21 “a touch of butter” 😭🤣
If it doesn' come out of the Form, put a damp dishcloth on top, that helps

Wonder how this dough would work as a loaf. I made this a couple times, using canned biscuits. But I like the look of yours better. Thanks CJ.
Monkey bread is SOOOOOO GOOD! Oh boy. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
i was thinking bout you for the last months, im so glad you are still posting.
In other matters, how does this recipe work with brown sugar?
I enjoy your videos. I always have. After the "monkey balls" comment my kids are hooked as well.😂
Masterpiece!
Thank you!😊
5:20 ½ pound of butter equals "a touch." Got it!
a touch of butter 😄
I'm imagining a version with shredded cheese mixed in between the balls to get a savoury-sweet popcorn mix flavour. 🤤
Lovely tasty morsels. I have the same glass plate! Linda, Quebec city, Canada
These can be made using frozen bun dough less mess same great taste!!!!
Perfection ❤
This is just a ball of butter and sugar and I'm here for it
I'm sure someone in the comments is saying how "you forgot to flower your nuts and dried cranberries" like that actually does something.
thank you Chef John, happy holiday y'all
The California Dairy Association thanks you for all of that buttery goodness.
5:20 "we'll do that by melting a touch (half a pound) of butter"
On my Christmas dinner list to go with the prime rib.
This isn’t a thing in the UK but I’d love to give it a go!
yes the uk is lacking in...food 😂
I adore you. Thanks for all you do!! (When is the next live stream)?

Well, thankyou for the singing invitation to Enjoy

It's sweetness that I'm thinking." of"~nenah cherry, at least that's how I sing it.
happy to put the 1000th like 🎉
Ooooooo, I love Monkey Bread!
Once again… a wonderful recipe! Question… we have a person in the family with an egg allergy… so if I leave it out, would it significantly affect the recipe?
Great video john!
If you have a kitchen scale, what I do is just weigh the dough, divide by however many pieces I want it to be and then weigh each piece as i cut them.
If you want to have some fun, pour rum on top and set it ablaze, for a nice holiday treat.
Can we pre make this? Pre prep day ahead and proof next day? What’s the best method?
