I keep repeating myself but this is gold, pure gold! I know a bit about video production so I do understand the effort (=time) it takes to compose a video of this amount of information. Although a bit fast paced for my taste (then again, why not rewind and take a second look) this is just unreal. These are the key elements of professional workflow ie. there is no way one can make money in this field by tinkering through menus and hidden windows... nothing wrong with being thorough and precise, but using keyboard shortcuts is essential to being a pro, imho. So, once again, thank you for this oh so valuable tutorial!

Watching this reminds me of the first video I saw on working in Fusion - my head exploded! But, slowly I'm getting competent with Fusion. This one blew my mind and I am having to watch it over and over to get it, but its really practical and useful! Im sure I'll get the hang of this auto select thing too - eventually!

The cut page was my salute for fast and happy chopping, but I had no idea how to work with it properly before your tip about syncing audio in the media page and setting audio to track 1. I cut docs. I was a bit tired of Premiere and multicams clips where you needed to do everything before editing. I work with double system medias (audioman+ 3 cameraman). I receive derush in Premiere where all the clips are multicam. I have created a workflow where I double the Premiere multicam on v2 and V3. I then assign cam1, 2 and 3 on V1, on v 1, 2 and 3 before flattening everything. I am then able to export an fcpxml to Resolve to start my prep in Resolve. I assign meta to my clips and drop all clips, audio and video, in a bin per day. I then batch Auto Sync audio on my bins before matching my angles in the Cut page. 'Painting' an angle seems so much more efficient when you turn your mind off traditional nested multicam.

Hi Chadwick- gotta say your Resolve stuff is the best there is on UA-cam. I'm an intermediate level user so it's easy for me to follow what you're doing, but I always learn several useful things from each video. There are two topics I'd love to see you dive into, and the deeper, the better: - First is how to do in Resolve what's called "Master Clip Effects" in Premiere. Lots of times I need to apply the same color grade or Fusion effects (chroma key most commonly) to everything that comes from the same camera file - regardless of how I cut it up into clips. I've got a few workflows using bins and groups in combination with remote grades - but they all stink. Would love to see how you handle this. - Second is a proper color managed workflow for GoPro "flat" footage to Rec709-A output, and using as little "Mac magic" as possible is a bonus for us PC guys :)

I love these deep dives. They give me new options to edit faster, and get those creative ideas on the timeline fast. The thing I still mis from ALL tutorials is just seeing everything being linked together. I would pay and arm and a leg to see more editors just work for a couple of hours. To see what I can learn from it. Maybe you can do a livestream where you work on a project, raw and dirty ;) (with the shortcuts you use onscreen)
I love the suggestion and idea, and it could be a lot of fun. I just need to find the right project to do it with that doesn't matter if it's material that hasn't been released yet. To get the shortcuts to pop up though it might need to be a pre-recorded thing so I can use screenflow. Either way, I've taken note. For a lot of people I think they would get bored but I can see value in it too. Cheers!
You might be right about people being bored, maybe not :) A nerd like me won’t. anyway, would love it if you tried. I think if you use OBS + input overlay. But there are other solutions out there.
So glad I found you. I often use the shift-click combo to disable and enable all auto select at once then turn on what I want. I believe you are showing a better way.

As always, great video and tips, thanks! It would be great if Davinci had a simple 'Paste on Top' feature (like their 'insert on top'). So, with one keystroke, you could paste a clip automatically to an empty track...and not need to toggle the Auto Track Selector on and off every time. Final Cut does this by default and it's a great time saver.
@@CreativeVideoTips I used to be a broadcast support guy for Apple in my region, so much of that style of editing that is so great for news and short story cutting, I really championed for the efficiency of output, given so many of those guys are working on a 24 hour news cycle.

Thanks for some very valuable and handy tips Chad. Just one I can't understand - 02:59 Select Clips. You say "Auto Select enables you to select individual clips that are stacked up high without touching a mouse" but then you have to use your mouse to disable tracks and then afterwards re-enable them. Why not just click on the clip to select it? One mouse click, much easier and quicker. What am I missing?
Haha Neil, you're right that was a do as I say moment. I guess for visual brevity but the thought behind it is that all of this can be keyboard-driven. Enable and disable tracks with the shortcut for that track (Option F1,2,3(the number of the track for video) and add command or control to that for audio. Then Shift V selects the clip. All that to say I don't always only use a keyboard. Use a mouse, a tablet, and a control panel. Whatever to get the job done fastest for you. This is just something to consider. I find I use auto select controls the most when doing repetive tasks and not always part of the creative timeline building process.

Find some editing tutorials a little overwhelming when they involve a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Seems to me that if the functionality is addressed first then later add in the keyboard shortcuts that most people would get there with less confusion. Your videos are at really quick pace which intermediate users I am sure appreciate. My advice would be to split the video into two and explain all the functionality in the front and the keyboard shortcuts in the second half of the video - both with demonstrations. So the person watching can take in the function first with sample of application, then the keyboard shortcuts once they completely understand the functionality. Hope that makes sense. Kind of writing this comment for people that might be overwhelmed to basically stick with it. This is in no way a critique of your video Chadwick, I enjoy watching your videos - even with the groaner jokes. Cheers
This advice is gold. And man, I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I will start trying to approaching my tutorial outlines this way moving forward. Sometimes I forget there are even menu options for some of the functions, but that would be great to show. And yes my dad jokes are terrible, just hoping to give folks a breather every once and a while from the dense tips.
I was so excited to learn about Auto Select but as I'm listening, all of your commands are for a MAC. I don't use MAC. I can translate but I have to look up most of it. I'm sooooo pressed for time! Great video!! Is there any video you've done in the past or can do explaining why clips get a little red icon on the side. When you highlight it they say "slip into place" or "move into place". I don't understand how I "slipped a clip" but I think it might have to do with this auto track selector? Cheers 🍻
Yes, it's for sure been part of some of my past videos, probably on multicam. But essentially those buttons are perfect to fix sync when linked selection was turned off and you moved, usually accidentally an audio clip away from the linked video clip. Move - will move the clip on the timeline. Slip - moves the guts of the inside of the sound to get in sync without moving it on the timeline so it won't change other timing you have around it with other clips. Hope this helps.
Your tutorials are great but this is the first time Ive ever had something not work. With trimming the selected edit points using command J & K, it doesnt go frame by frame it like starts playing the clip. Maybe thats how its expected to work?

Haha awesome. For AAF export there isn’t much to it other than using the preset for protools. There use to be a bug that didn’t let you have disabled clips and it would crash but not anymore. I’ll might do a simple written blog post on my website for this for you this week. I’ll try to remember to follow back with those settings.

Thanks Chadwick! Though at about 4 mins into video, you talk about moving to next edit point by using the up or down arrow. I'm curious how you setup your keyboard shortcuts to make them do that. For me, that does not seem to work, so I obviously don't have the arrows mapped properly. When I type: "Go to next edit" in the keyboard customization search block, I don't see that as an option (though there is an option to "go to next marker"). I must be missing something, because it was something that was easy to map in Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Any suggestions as to what I'm missing here? By the way, I've learned so much from watching your channel; you're the best!
Mark clip is a way to set in and out points around a clip, without needing to tap, I and O for the beginning and end. It's a fast professional way to quickly make and move selections. Most of the time on the timeline I never will mark i unless I need it to be in the middle of a clip. I"ll just mark x and then if I need more selected to the right on the timeline I'll mark O to extend the selection to be larger.
I wish Resolve had the option to auto-enable the Auto Track Selector after an edit. Most of the time you only need it for one particular operation, and after that you want all tracks to be selected again. I often have to fix sync issues because I find out too late that one track wasn't 'auto selected'. (BTW: why is it called auto tracks selector, nothing 'auto' here).
Chadwick, - great content. I religiously watch all that you are putting out. Thank you! I have a question for you: I have been using Auto Select for a while. There is one thing that I would love to solve in Resolve, which works extremely easily in Final Cut Pro, but is painful in Resolve. Here is the scenario: imagine a video that uses two pieces of music, and for each of them there are many B-Roll clips that are carefully cut to the beat. I currently place each piece of music on its own track, and have to remember to turn on or off the Auto Select button for each track depending where I am editing. If I am editing the B-roll around the first piece of music, I have to turn off Auto Select for the first music track to avoid cutting up that piece of music, but I have to turn on Auto Select for the second music track, to make sure that stays connected to the clips that are linked to it. What I really want from Resolve is a Lock Clip command that allows me to tell it that these are pieces of music, and should not be sliced up, but need to stay connected to the associated Movie clips when those move. Lock Track doesn't work, as music won't move when it needs to to stay connected. Can you think on an easier way to do this? When you start having three or four pieces of music in your video, this gets to be really complex and easy to screw up.
I feel ya. This is always a challenge as videos get longer. Your strategy is correct though. Each section should have its own music track and only disable auto select on that section when you’re working on it. This could mean if you end up with 8 songs you use 8 music tracks. An alternate way, which I don’t use would be to nest sections of your project with compound clips. I don’t love this because getting in and out is a slow process. One more idea depending how complex, you can in fact link clips with linked selection so they behave like a connected clip in Final Cut Pro. This doesn’t really solve cutting against a music track but does make move clips easier, like a sound effect synced to a visual. Right click after both are selected and link. Then the chain link selection button holds them as a unit.

Right now, I do link the music to the first clip, so that it will move with it. But I suspect you were meaning something more sophisticated than that. I have also tried the compound clips idea, but there are issues with compound clips, so had to go to nested timelines. And it was really too painful moving between them. Since you feel the pain of what I have experienced, if you ever get a chance to talk to a product manager at BlackMagic, it would be great if you could ask them for the Lock Clip feature, as this would completely solve the problem. Thanks! BTW I just watched your "Easily Cut Dailies like a PRO" and that was a revelation and huge productivity tip for me. Your content is excellent!
absolutely - Usually this has to do with the gamma tag settings that are getting applied on your exports from Resolve. The nice thing is Final Cut makes this pretty simple because it is always managed by the mac color sync. PLZ explain "Lowest track with AUTO SELECT ON". Really Inserting or Pasting CLIPS in DR compared to any other Editor has been a real PITA for the 3 years I've been using DR FREE & STUDIO. Sorry but The older I get the harder it gets. Learning and Lesson Retention, That's why I try to AVOIDED most 'Keyboard Shortcuts' I can screw up a timeline in 3 seconds so bad I literally must start over from scratch. I've learned when attempting to do something Complicated I copy the whole Timeline to a new one so if I screw it up I can Delete it and go back to the Previous GOOD time line recopy it and try again.
My apologies for running to quickly over this. I promise this next week's video will move a little slower, but I'm thankful that you asked this important question so I can respond. On your video tracks, from top to bottom visually, Resolve will "do", whatever the action you want to "do". To the lowest visually turned on auto select track. By default they're all on all the time. So if you copied from track 1, it will past to where it came from unless you change the auto select switch. If it came from track 1 and you want it on track to, just disable/turn off auto select on track 1 and then the lowest track with the auto select on is track 2. So Resolve pastes to track 2 instead. Please let me know if this helps you understand the basics of the the copy and paste function. I'm happy to explain further. Your feedback is very helpful. We have a wide audience of editor experience on this channel and I do hope to please as many people as possible so everyone can easily learn. And my hope is to never bore anyone with lengthy explanations when it is not too difficult to replay sections of a tutorial. I also sometimes just get excited to show things that I think are cool. One other resource I have is that I post my outlines for each video on creativevideotips.com in case it is easier to read as a resource. Audio works in reverse, but I figured that would overcomplicate the explanation.

Thanks so much! wow. I appreciate it. Hey so I think you found a bug, but I do have a work around. If you don't have and in point set, the go to in point command will take you to the start of the timeline. Shift I is the default. Hope this helps. (shift O takes you to the tail of the timeline, but the actually go to end of timeline shortcut also works in that case).
They could have done better with that annoying button. I hate how it automatically turns on and my time lines move around. Id like to permanently disable it. And it would be nice if all you had to do was click on your track to select it before pasting. Like WTF?
I really hate when 'TEACHERS' know the subject so well the talk so Fast and make 'MOUSE CLICKS' even faster that one has to keep replaying the LESSON Spot over & over, just to understand what the 'EXPERT' is trying to say & do. Also just watching something done "Move Part of a timeline" in this case, makes little scenes without seeing the way it played Before & then after the move. Some will say they get it right away. I say "THEIR NOT Davinci Resolve BEGINNERS and this Tutorial, I thought, says for DR BEGINNERS. GOOD instructors Teach to the lowest common denominator/student in a class. JMHO Sir.
My apologies. Essentially this button tells resolve count me in or count me out. By default is always on and the lowest track that has it on gets priority. To start using it try copying a clip with command c. Then option click the auto select button on a higher track. The guy command v. This lets you paste to any track now instead of just where it came from.

On a side note, I'm a super fan of your channel, as a FCP user trying to switch to Resolve... but this one got me really confused.. got way too fast and left me with the sensation that Resolve was overly complicated.. ;) But hey, that's the only time this happened with your videos... keep up the incredible work

The cut page was my salute for fast and happy chopping, but I had no idea how to work with it properly before your tip about syncing audio in the media page and setting audio to track 1. I cut docs. I was a bit tired of Premiere and multicams clips where you needed to do everything before editing. I work with double system medias (audioman+ 3 cameraman). I receive derush in Premiere where all the clips are multicam. I have created a workflow where I double the Premiere multicam on v2 and V3. I then assign cam1, 2 and 3 on V1, on v 1, 2 and 3 before flattening everything. I am then able to export an fcpxml to Resolve to start my prep in Resolve. I assign meta to my clips and drop all clips, audio and video, in a bin per day. I then batch Auto Sync audio on my bins before matching my angles in the Cut page. 'Painting' an angle seems so much more efficient when you turn your mind off traditional nested multicam.

Hi Chadwick- gotta say your Resolve stuff is the best there is on UA-cam. I'm an intermediate level user so it's easy for me to follow what you're doing, but I always learn several useful things from each video. There are two topics I'd love to see you dive into, and the deeper, the better:
- First is how to do in Resolve what's called "Master Clip Effects" in Premiere. Lots of times I need to apply the same color grade or Fusion effects (chroma key most commonly) to everything that comes from the same camera file - regardless of how I cut it up into clips. I've got a few workflows using bins and groups in combination with remote grades - but they all stink. Would love to see how you handle this.
- Second is a proper color managed workflow for GoPro "flat" footage to Rec709-A output, and using as little "Mac magic" as possible is a bonus for us PC guys :)

I love these deep dives. They give me new options to edit faster, and get those creative ideas on the timeline fast. The thing I still mis from ALL tutorials is just seeing everything being linked together. I would pay and arm and a leg to see more editors just work for a couple of hours. To see what I can learn from it. Maybe you can do a livestream where you work on a project, raw and dirty ;) (with the shortcuts you use onscreen)
I love the suggestion and idea, and it could be a lot of fun. I just need to find the right project to do it with that doesn't matter if it's material that hasn't been released yet. To get the shortcuts to pop up though it might need to be a pre-recorded thing so I can use screenflow. Either way, I've taken note. For a lot of people I think they would get bored but I can see value in it too. Cheers!
You might be right about people being bored, maybe not :) A nerd like me won’t. anyway, would love it if you tried. I think if you use OBS + input overlay. But there are other solutions out there.
So glad I found you. I often use the shift-click combo to disable and enable all auto select at once then turn on what I want. I believe you are showing a better way.

As always, great video and tips, thanks! It would be great if Davinci had a simple 'Paste on Top' feature (like their 'insert on top'). So, with one keystroke, you could paste a clip automatically to an empty track...and not need to toggle the Auto Track Selector on and off every time. Final Cut does this by default and it's a great time saver.

Thanks for some very valuable and handy tips Chad. Just one I can't understand - 02:59 Select Clips. You say "Auto Select enables you to select individual clips that are stacked up high without touching a mouse" but then you have to use your mouse to disable tracks and then afterwards re-enable them. Why not just click on the clip to select it? One mouse click, much easier and quicker. What am I missing?
Haha Neil, you're right that was a do as I say moment. I guess for visual brevity but the thought behind it is that all of this can be keyboard-driven. Enable and disable tracks with the shortcut for that track (Option F1,2,3(the number of the track for video) and add command or control to that for audio. Then Shift V selects the clip.
All that to say I don't always only use a keyboard. Use a mouse, a tablet, and a control panel. Whatever to get the job done fastest for you. This is just something to consider. I find I use auto select controls the most when doing repetive tasks and not always part of the creative timeline building process.

Find some editing tutorials a little overwhelming when they involve a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Seems to me that if the functionality is addressed first then later add in the keyboard shortcuts that most people would get there with less confusion. Your videos are at really quick pace which intermediate users I am sure appreciate. My advice would be to split the video into two and explain all the functionality in the front and the keyboard shortcuts in the second half of the video - both with demonstrations. So the person watching can take in the function first with sample of application, then the keyboard shortcuts once they completely understand the functionality.
Hope that makes sense. Kind of writing this comment for people that might be overwhelmed to basically stick with it.

I was so excited to learn about Auto Select but as I'm listening, all of your commands are for a MAC. I don't use MAC. I can translate but I have to look up most of it. I'm sooooo pressed for time! Great video!! Is there any video you've done in the past or can do explaining why clips get a little red icon on the side. When you highlight it they say "slip into place" or "move into place". I don't understand how I "slipped a clip" but I think it might have to do with this auto track selector?

Yes, it's for sure been part of some of my past videos, probably on multicam. But essentially those buttons are perfect to fix sync when linked selection was turned off and you moved, usually accidentally an audio clip away from the linked video clip.
Move - will move the clip on the timeline. Slip - moves the guts of the inside of the sound to get in sync without moving it on the timeline so it won't change other timing you have around it with other clips. Hope this helps.

Your tutorials are great but this is the first time Ive ever had something not work. With trimming the selected edit points using command J & K, it doesnt go frame by frame it like starts playing the clip. Maybe thats how its expected to work?

Haha awesome. For AAF export there isn’t much to it other than using the preset for protools. There use to be a bug that didn’t let you have disabled clips and it would crash but not anymore.
I’ll might do a simple written blog post on my website for this for you this week. I’ll try to remember to follow back with those settings.

Thanks Chadwick! Though at about 4 mins into video, you talk about moving to next edit point by using the up or down arrow. I'm curious how you setup your keyboard shortcuts to make them do that. For me, that does not seem to work, so I obviously don't have the arrows mapped properly. When I type: "Go to next edit" in the keyboard customization search block, I don't see that as an option (though there is an option to "go to next marker"). I must be missing something, because it was something that was easy to map in Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Any suggestions as to what I'm missing here? By the way, I've learned so much from watching your channel; you're the best!
Hit "V" first. And i think it's shift-v to get out of that mode and select clips again instead edit-points.

Mark clip is a way to set in and out points around a clip, without needing to tap, I and O for the beginning and end. It's a fast professional way to quickly make and move selections. Most of the time on the timeline I never will mark i unless I need it to be in the middle of a clip. I"ll just mark x and then if I need more selected to the right on the timeline I'll mark O to extend the selection to be larger.
I wish Resolve had the option to auto-enable the Auto Track Selector after an edit. Most of the time you only need it for one particular operation, and after that you want all tracks to be selected again. I often have to fix sync issues because I find out too late that one track wasn't 'auto selected'. (BTW: why is it called auto tracks selector, nothing 'auto' here).
Chadwick, - great content. I religiously watch all that you are putting out. Thank you! I have a question for you: I have been using Auto Select for a while. There is one thing that I would love to solve in Resolve, which works extremely easily in Final Cut Pro, but is painful in Resolve. Here is the scenario: imagine a video that uses two pieces of music, and for each of them there are many B-Roll clips that are carefully cut to the beat. I currently place each piece of music on its own track, and have to remember to turn on or off the Auto Select button for each track depending where I am editing. If I am editing the B-roll around the first piece of music, I have to turn off Auto Select for the first music track to avoid cutting up that piece of music, but I have to turn on Auto Select for the second music track, to make sure that stays connected to the clips that are linked to it. What I really want from Resolve is a Lock Clip command that allows me to tell it that these are pieces of music, and should not be sliced up, but need to stay connected to the associated Movie clips when those move. Lock Track doesn't work, as music won't move when it needs to to stay connected. Can you think on an easier way to do this? When you start having three or four pieces of music in your video, this gets to be really complex and easy to screw up.
I feel ya. This is always a challenge as videos get longer. Your strategy is correct though. Each section should have its own music track and only disable auto select on that section when you’re working on it.
This could mean if you end up with 8 songs you use 8 music tracks.
An alternate way, which I don’t use would be to nest sections of your project with compound clips. I don’t love this because getting in and out is a slow process.
One more idea depending how complex, you can in fact link clips with linked selection so they behave like a connected clip in Final Cut Pro. This doesn’t really solve cutting against a music track but does make move clips easier, like a sound effect synced to a visual. Right click after both are selected and link. Then the chain link selection button holds them as a unit.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for the reply. I I want to make sure I understand what you mean by "link clips with linked selection". Right now, I do link the music to the first clip, so that it will move with it. But I suspect you were meaning something more sophisticated than that. I have also tried the compound clips idea, but there are issues with compound clips, so had to go to nested timelines. And it was really too painful moving between them.
Since you feel the pain of what I have experienced, if you ever get a chance to talk to a product manager at BlackMagic, it would be great if you could ask them for the Lock Clip feature, as this would completely solve the problem.

absolutely - Usually this has to do with the gamma tag settings that are getting applied on your exports from Resolve. The nice thing is Final Cut makes this pretty simple because it is always managed by the mac color sync. PLZ explain "Lowest track with AUTO SELECT ON". Really Inserting or Pasting CLIPS in DR compared to any other Editor has been a real PITA for the 3 years I've been using DR FREE & STUDIO. Sorry but The older I get the harder it gets. Learning and Lesson Retention, That's why I try to AVOIDED most 'Keyboard Shortcuts' I can screw up a timeline in 3 seconds so bad I literally must start over from scratch. I've learned when attempting to do something Complicated I copy the whole Timeline to a new one so if I screw it up I can Delete it and go back to the Previous GOOD time line recopy it and try again.
My apologies for running to quickly over this. I promise this next week's video will move a little slower, but I'm thankful that you asked this important question so I can respond.
On your video tracks, from top to bottom visually, Resolve will "do", whatever the action you want to "do". To the lowest visually turned on auto select track. By default they're all on all the time. So if you copied from track 1, it will past to where it came from unless you change the auto select switch. If it came from track 1 and you want it on track to, just disable/turn off auto select on track 1 and then the lowest track with the auto select on is track 2. So Resolve pastes to track 2 instead.
Please let me know if this helps you understand the basics of the the copy and paste function. I'm happy to explain further. Your feedback is very helpful. We have a wide audience of editor experience on this channel and I do hope to please as many people as possible so everyone can easily learn. And my hope is to never bore anyone with lengthy explanations when it is not too difficult to replay sections of a tutorial. I also sometimes just get excited to show things that I think are cool. One other resource I have is that I post my outlines for each video on creativevideotips.com in case it is easier to read as a resource.
Audio works in reverse, but I figured that would overcomplicate the explanation.

Sorry, there should be a keyboard setting on the OS level to allow the function Keys to act as function keys. I’m not sure where on windows that is.

Thanks so much! wow. I appreciate it. Hey so I think you found a bug, but I do have a work around. If you don't have and in point set, the go to in point command will take you to the start of the timeline. Shift I is the default. Hope this helps. (shift O takes you to the tail of the timeline, but the actually go to end of timeline shortcut also works in that case).

I say "THEIR NOT Davinci Resolve BEGINNERS and this Tutorial, I thought, says for DR BEGINNERS. GOOD instructors Teach to the lowest common denominator/student in a class.

My apologies. Essentially this button tells resolve count me in or count me out. By default is always on and the lowest track that has it on gets priority.
To start using it try copying a clip with command c. Then option click the auto select button on a higher track. The guy command v. This lets you paste to any track now instead of just where it came from.

On a side note, I'm a super fan of your channel, as a FCP user trying to switch to Resolve... but this one got me really confused.. got way too fast and left me with the sensation that Resolve was overly complicated.. ;) But hey, that's the only time this happened with your videos... keep up the incredible work
