Full Time RV Living in the Sonoran Desert

- Were full time RV living in the Sonoran desert for a week now. After finding this amazing camp spot amongst the saguaro cactus we try to bushwhack to the Ragged Top mountain. Later that evening Kellie cooks her spicy pasta and enjoy dinner watching the sunset.
WATER: As a lifelong Arizonian of 57 years, and being a rescue helicopter pilot, I would like to add to the conversation if I may. It should be needless to say that WATER, or lack of water is the greatest killer of hikers in my experience in the desert. The problem is that visitors underestimate how much water they need to carry especially when they start on the trail very early and it feels cool out. As they get deeper into the trail and the sun comes up and the temperature rises they find that they have made it a long way and now they need some water and continue their hike. Farther and farther they go as they see their destination in front of them and then they reach it and now the heat and exhaustion catches up. They don't have enough water and those desert trails offer NO shade that really helps and now they have the LONG walk back with no water or very little left. Limited to no cell service as they feel a heat emergency coming on and most would not even know how to tell somebody how to find them. I am happy to to find you and hoist you into the helicopter if everything works out, but way too often we are on a search mission trying to find you and if that is happening, its mostly a body recovery. This happens way more than you will ever hear on the news, but I want to make sure I drive this home for all of you who want to come out and enjoy the beautiful desert trails.
JUMPING CACTUS: And one thing people are NEVER prepared for is getting Jumping Cactus, or Cholla cactus stuck in them! Even if you do not brush up against one, others can brush by one of these cacti and cause it to "fling" toward you. If it hits you it WILL stick to you. Pieces will also be on the ground and you can accidentally kick a piece that sticks to you or you send it flying and it sticks into your partner or your dog. That stuff is NO joke and it has hollow needles with microscopic barbs that keep you from easily pulling them out. They are not like the sahuaro or the barrel cactus needles, these can be really dangerous. You may think I am overdoing my warning, but I guarantee that if you experience it, you will be an instant believer. With all that warning, I highly suggest you carry a heavy and long comb with you in your backpack, the longer the better. You will need and use then to help remove the mass of the cacti off of your skin. You will have to put the comb between the cactus and skin and pull it away from you. You will have to use caution that you don't just flick it into somebody near you so you have to plan it out. You will also need a pair of pliers to pull out the remaining barbs. If you have a multitool that has plier in it that might work, but unless you want to walk with those sticker in you, be sure to have a pair of pliers. Of course, the best course of action is awareness and caution so that you don't end up in an emergency, but IF it happens, you need a plan and the right tools to manage it.
BEARS: Not going to be an issue where you are. The absolute worst case is a Mountain Lion and that is a very rare sight to see. You would most likely see coyote's, deer, Javelina, scorpions and of course a snake. Rattlers are indeed the only venomous concern and in cooler weather you can find them sunning themselves on the paths to watch in front of you and along the path. Scorpions are if you are flipping over rocks or wood, but they can find their way into your campsite so be sure to keep your shoes up off the ground.
That's a lot to read, but I think it is important for all your Earth Roamers who want to stay safe and are interested in some advice to help you with your desert exploration. I could go on and on, but I am sure few will even care to read this. If all they read is about the water and I can help save one life, it is all that matters. Seen way too many dead folks who did not have to die, but the desert can be very unforgiving and dangerous if you are not prepared.
Beautiful area and I am glad to see you two enjoying it so much. So very unique and beautiful in its own way and you are here at just the right time. In a month or so the heat will start taking over and eventually that place will be an oven. Enjoy it for as long as you can!
I read it all. I know I can always learn many new things every day. Thanks.
Youre really immersing yourselves into the scenery with the drone shots. It's neat. You now have the best of both worlds, a luxury bed and tiny home along with a backyard and neighbors of your choice. Nice.
I love the Tucson area. Thanks for sharing! Even though you didn't get to where you wanted, you still got out there and explored! I think that is a win.
What a beautiful area. You couldn't have asked for a more wonderful setting for your evening meal. God blessed you.
Just returned from that part of the world! Gorgeous- yet nothing soft and cuddly - only sharp and prickly! Your dinner looked delicious!
I live near where you camped, and to me, it's such a magical place every season. People don't give the desert enough credit for all the wonders that live in it. Thank you for giving a glimpse of what life is like here! ♡♡♡
Couldn't agree more!
So glad the weather was good enough for you guys to get out there!!
Lol. . . I’m the one leading my husband through the trails and doing the bushwhacking! I completely understand the feeling of trail defeat. . . every hiker hits that at one time or another.
All the spikes and thorns are for water conservation and to deter any hungry animals. PS love your show.
Thank you! Its so beautiful!
I really enjoyed the opening Drone photography and compliment the drone pilot! Rey nice!
Ok that’s hands down the coolest place y’all have ever camped!! Magnificent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hey Cody and Kelly, you are hands down the most positive people on youtube. I commented on the one vlog about the Fishhook Barrel Cactus . I hope it didn't put you down for not knowing at the time because all your videos have so much awesome information! But UA-cam can been really hard because I understand yall don't want to give out false info but also the tree you were bushwackin was a Foothills Pablo Verde Tree. You two are really knowledgeable. Like last year we were living on the road tent camping and you guys were at Guadalupe River State Park so we checked it out and loved it so much so thanks for all the help with awesome spots to see in the country! Keep it Rollin DOME LIFE!
WHAT A LOCATION, TO BE THERE WHEN THE WEATHER IS MILDER, AND THE GROUND IS GREEN IN AREAS... EPIC!!. SOME DAY I HOPE I CAN GET THERE... ITS BLOWIN IN IDAHO RIGHT NOW AND 50 MPH WINDS ON MY HOMESTEAD....LOLOL. ENJOY BE BLESSED U2!
Wow! The cacti are cool looking but I sure wouldn't want to trip and fall on one!
I live in Tucson and happy that you guys are show casing this area. Great Job!
"A three hour loop". That's what the crew of the Minnow said.
Great spot, great dinner.
Kelly an Cody Thank you for Sharing 👍💕💕 Can't get over the Sunsets Absolutely Beautiful an to see those Amazing Flowers in the Desert 🏜 WOW Love it.
You have away of Sharing the Beauty an Love for what you do.... Well Done.
@Katz Crow, love their videos! Hello from Poland 🇵🇱 and my little channel 😊
PLEASE!! Apply sunscreen often and make it a part of your backpack, along with HATS!! You won’t see the damage the sun is doing to your skin for years to come. Believe me. 3 MOHS surgeries and 3 reconstructive surgeries later, I wish someone had told me years ago to wear sunscreen and a big hat while outside!!
Thanks for sharing more adventures!!❤
You guys are in my back yard! I love this! There's nothing like doing Yoga in the desert. You showcased the desert Beautifully. I loved watching your camping trip! 🥰💞👍🏻
I'm from AZ and I ❤❤the desert in the spring! It's my favorite time of the year here! I've been all over western USA and to Florida, Minnesota and New Jersey, BUT AZ will ALWAYS be my home! Thanks for sharing! But please, take heed to BrianAZ's warnings in his comments below. It's August now and we just went through a historical month (JULY) of excessive (temps at 110+) heat in the Valley of the Sun! 🥵🥵 I've lived here long enough to know that you MUST be prepared or else you're just ignorant and or asking for it! I still and always will love the AZ desert, the saguaro and ocotillo's are my favorite desert plants! Thanks for sharing!
If the critters don't get you the plants will! LOL
Even the trees and bushes bite in the desert. It's also too easy to get dehydrated because your sweat normally evaporates off of you, it doesn't cool you down and you don't' realize how much hydration you're losing. Stacked rocks don't always mean a trail or hiking paths out there either. Glad you turned back. The last thing you want to do is try to hike down in the dark with no head lamps. People die in the desert all the time. Not something to mess around with.
It's still a beautiful hike! It's better to be safe than sorry. Might need snake away. Cacti are so unique! Especially the hugger one!
Cool shirt Cody!
Great view from the camper! French toast and donner looked amazing as well. Thank you for the video. Love to watch you all!
No bears but an occasional mountain lion. There's nothing like shining your light onto a hillside at night and seeing a pair of glowing eyes gliding over the rocks with ease to get your heart racing lol *Btw, the bush you were wondering about looked like a desert broom brush. The butterflies love them when in bloom.
Such an amazing spot!!! ❤
Used to walk behind my husband and it was like following a blind mule. Thank goodness their were no cactus involved, just briers
When we did our very first hike in the eastern section of Saguaro National Park, I could swear the cacti were whispering to us.
Love the Terlingua gear,Thanks for representing, VIVA TERLINGUA!
I think it's called a fishhook barrel cactus. I also think they're just gorgeous. As a matter of fact, I'm near Picacho Peak now, surrounded by SO many cactus, camped somewhere in a maze, with a couple of cloudy days ahead. 😕
Spectacular country! You two find the most beautiful spots to share with us! Thank you for all you do. Blessings.
The Sonoran desert is some of my favorite hiking. One of my many regrets is moving from AZ. Killer camp site. Always have a compass even if you have GPS. Killer sunset at the end. Dinner looked good.
High rent Baby!!! ❤
Love your adventures! Great video!!
I love bushwhacking, but it's painful and dangerous. We are 67 and 68 and do it often, but we always say, if you aren't bleeding then you aren't bushwhacking! And Arkansas bushwhacking isn't like where you guys were. It's smart to abort and save it for the future! You guys are smart, safe and adventurous, we love you two!
Love your adventures
You guys, the hugging saguaro was just spectacular! What an unexpected treat that was.
Many many yeas ago we were visiting in the Sanora desert area and there was a headline in the local paper... pointed out a bunch of fools were using a grand old sanora cactus for target practice. It finally collapsed at its base... and fell right on the shooter... killing him. I love stories with happy endings. 🌵 🌄
Sure hope you get back home in a month or so no matter where you go Arkansas is beautiful
Kelly is such a good cook. Like that freshly grated cheese. Monga
The view at the top is just looking down on all of the beauty you have already come through. Enjoy the journey!
Welcome back to Tucson. The weather's awesome this week. I was just up by Superstition Mountain in Apache Junction two weeks ago. Omg, what a view..... just gorgeous. You guys found a great camp site!!!!!
Hi! Cody and Kelli, Great video! Loved the campsite with the Saguaro cactus and jagged mountain range. Beautiful landscape there and the sunset was stunning! ❤❤❤
I never seen so many cactus in all my life...pretty neat!
Great sunsets! It's amazing to me how much greener the area is than when I was there 2 years ago in early November. Water makes all the difference. Great drone work and photos as always Cody and Kellie! Love to know what wildlife you've seen. Lizards? Birds? Javalina? Snakes, as you said. The bright orange flowers are California Poppies. Suggestion: You need to do a special tee shirt commemorating Dome Life Winter 2023. "Everything is out to stab you!" 😄
It's early spring in the desert so it's starting to green...where as early November is the start of winter, the green is gone. The desert will be breathtaking in just a few more weeks!
Bushwhacking in the desert requires a bit more familiarity with the flora as some cacti species are protected and could get you in some trouble if damaged. Also you correctly identified the barrel cactus and it is also known as a fish hook cactus.
and WHY go out chopping up the vegetation......i've hiked out there a lot , without trails or websites.....and never needed to chop anything down.......the Sonora desert is open and easy , just go around obstacles and watch your feet
I bet the stars at night are incredible!
You are very lucky to have that gorgeous lady to follow you
I feel that any exercise is better than none. You still had a good hike, saw some stuff and some things, and came back without thorns.
Time for a beer or a sweet tea. Have you made sun tea out there yet? You could just store cold homemade sweet tea in that handy fridge. Also, I love NUUN. They are hydration fizzy tablets to add to your water. So much better with way less sugar than gatorsde. No more cramps for me!
Have not tried sun tea yet.
Dang it Cody, you are an awesome guy, but nobody deserves your life, it's just too good! We bushwhack a lot in Arkansas , and we've got many memorable fails. But we always went back and eventually found that waterfall. Love your adventures. And of all my tee shirts, dome life is my fave by a mile!
Arkansas is the bomb!
Thx for the beauty of all those Cacti and French toast-yummy. Do you ever worry about not being able to find your way back?
@@Deborah986 GPS software on the phone always saves us!
Greatly enjoyed the cooking segment, and the gorgeous sunset views. Can’t put a price tag on peace. Nice work.
You guys HAVE to go hike Chiricahua National Monument! You will LOSE your minds!
It’s better to turn around and go back then it end up being a stranded in the desert episode. Good call. Safety first!
I love desert sunsets!
Thanks for your videos. I now am living thru you both as my husband has been diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's so my retirement to live the nomad life is over. Love you both
So sorry to hear that. Retire now and travel for a year
We LOVE y’all! I must say that this was the most beautiful cooking scene EVER. Safe travels!
Beautiful scenery! Rattlesnakes out yet? Be careful!
Loving the Sonoran Desert vlogs, you do it justice. You were right to turn around, as Kellie said, everything is out to stab you. (And you had it right, barrel cactus or plural barrel cacti.) Hopefully you'll still be in the area for Picacho Peak wildflowers in the spring, the desert is looking green and healthy, should be a good one this year!
The desert is so beautiful. Great footage!
Awesome vlog! Thank you, guys! 😊
Love living through your adventures!! Love to watch you guys
Better safe than sorry.woundrfull views though wish I could experience it myself.thanks for a great video
See y'all on the other
Dang, I miss Tucson. I miss the sunsets so much, especially in the spring when everything is so green.
Turning around was a good choice. Nice episode.
Great video! I was told it takes 60 years for first arm to form on saguaro cactus!...love y'all ❤️
From snowy Alberta I sure enjoy this beautiful video
To me it’s so far your best
Jerry still wants the knife you have. But everyone that knows him knows he will just hurt himself. 😂
Awesome intro love that spanish guitar. Good work y'all.
It’s so beautiful there .
I was happy you turned around . I was afraid you’d get lost or hurt .
I kept thinking are their snakes 🐍. Y’all are so brave 😅
There 🫠
Love seeing you guys in Tucson 🌵 🌅
Great vlog as always. Sorry I missed it live. Stay safe! 🏕 💜
Great Vlog. The story telling, asmr brolls, cinematic brolls, transitions, drone shots and cheffing were on point. Glad y’all made it home. New Sub
Fishhook barrel cactus the cactus that you can eat and drink from.
Wahh!!!
Great hike although dangerous 👋💓💯‼️😘
I am not sure if you have your own cookbook yet but if you don't you should
I do. www.domelife.camp it’s on pre sale right now
There are 2 remote areas that are really off the beaten path. In S Central Arizona is Organ Pipe National Monument and SE Arizona is Chiricahua National Monument. I think you will really enjoy hiking there.
😊
Come on now I'm hangry.with your awesome cooking
Ha! Yall are in an Arkansas travel promo magazine I just picked up. Doesn't look like they gave yall credit though....hot springs diamond lakes travel association vacation guide on page 60 lol.
Yes we are! They compensated us for the photos.
Not to scare you but there are Bears, Mountain Lions and Jaguars out there.
You can use a cell phone app that tracks where you go and we'll show you how to backtrack if you get lost.
👍👍👍👍👍😀
March 20 is Spring
Google says that you are correct Cody that is a barrel cactus.
I'm not 100% But, I don't think you go to the desert to bushwack, 😂😂😂, we wouldn't have... we lived in Phoenix for 11 years and did a lot of camping in those good 'ol days. Also are you keeping your eyes peeled for rattlers??? You don't need bear spray for those, you need a .44 magnum...🤣🤣🤣. 💛🧡💛🧡
What is your posting schedule? I'm looking for a new vlog! Keep them coming.
New schedule posting will be Thursday and Sunday. Thanks for being a fan!
You ain’t in Arkansas anymore, Dorothy. Born and raised in Arizona hike to many peaks it’s more of a scramble than a bushwhack.
I think the bushes are Ocotillo
Hello, I use my handheld GPS, track up guarantee trackdown same path.
Kinda tricky with all cactus
Can you tell me what part of Arizona you were camping. Closest town? I’m heading out that way in a couple of months. Appreciate the info.
Tucson
Least your not in middle of 12” snow bank
The whole area looks like a dried out wasteland to me, but there is some beauty to it.
So are you in the Arizona part of the Sonoran desert or the California part of that desert?
Arizona
Just an aside. Do you guys carry a satellite beacon with you? We do. I hope so. They are not expensive and will bring help in less than an hour.
and wear a hat!
