There's only two phases in life: pre and post Thoroughfare by Ethel Cain
well this works for ethel in the universe of preachers daughter too..
Wouldn't have expected this profile pic in the top comment. Her debut's up there with Tonight's The Night and After The Gold Rush in my all time favorites
damn right!
This song is so romantic that i might want to see the west and may or may nor get consumed by a man with a truck I met on the side of the road.
no bc i would literally KILL to be with the man she sings about in this song
@@bellaporly7696 you DEFINITELY dont 💀
@@bellaporly7696hell naww
@@bellaporly7696 baby please work on that, this is a cautionary tale :(
The vocals and production drop on “you might not be my love, but baby, I doubt it” and the scat outros are instant serotonin
For reallll
I got goosebumps and started crying
One of the best for sure
fr !!!
don't know if its intentional but sometimes when she sings "do you wanna see the west with me" it kind of sounds like "do you wanna see the worst of me", which is a little chilling, especially with what happens later on in the album... 😨
i think it's absolutely intentional, i only recently started hearing it as "the west" but i think it's honestly for the best that both of those interpretations are easily heard, it makes for a better listen and a more --thorough-- song. Is she talking about her own downfalls and low qualities, the worst of the western US, or the worst of her partner? lots to think about...
@@ericamakowski789 great point!! i love that no matter how many times i listen to the song (or the entire album, really) i still feel like i'm noticing new aspects to it with each listen :D
I literally thought it was “the worst of me” until like the 3rd listen through
and for me i always sing it sometimes saying "do you wanna see the rest with me" knowing that they've travelled together and all which also makes sense LMAOO
I used to think the line was “do you want to see the west with me” until I looked up the lyrics loll
every song is casually a whole ass movie experience
Best album of all time not to be dramatic
Go ahead, be dramatic
Your mia goth X profile pic fitting the vibe of this song
Please be more dramatic
Agreed.
Girl
queen meemaw puts her whole cainussy in this song, definitely my top fave from this album!
Oh!
"If he's a serial killer then what's the worst that could happen to a girl who's already hurt" turned into a song/album of it's own!🖤🖤🖤
Lana & Ethel are legends🤍
Love this omg
i hope she and lana collab soon!

knowing the rest of the story makes this absolutely haunting
Can you explain the story to me? I’m kinda new to Ethel
@@Cl0ud3dDr34mzI’d suggest looking it up and also watching some vids breaking it down! Very chilling
@@Cl0ud3dDr34mzthe album is telling a story of a girl named Ethel who ran away from her very religious home and ends up meeting a man who ends up murdering and cannibalizing her. (There’s a lot more to the story but that’s just the short break down, if you want you can always read or there’s vids on here, UA-cam, that really go into depth).
@@Cl0ud3dDr34mzbasically after this song is when Ethel (the girl this album is about) she’s pimped out and drugged up by the man she meets in this song, Isaiah. As the songs go by it tells the story of Ethel and this psychopath cannibal who ends up killing her & eating her.
One thing I wasn't sure if it was intentional or not, but the line "Do you wanna see the West with me?" has something funny going on with it. The first time she sings it, it's clear as ever. Second time, little muddy but you know it's the same. But the THIRD time when he's "shooting his shot" it sounds like she's singing "do you wanna see the worst of me?"
Again, not sure if it's on purpose or not, but if it is: GENIUS foreshadowing 🙌🏻🙌🏻
sounds like, "worst with me."
@@nthk4u I can hear that too!!
i am an Angelino...West and Worst are the same thing now. Avoid LA parties, best ya can, please.
@@pariahthistledowne3934 I think it's more than the LA parties tbh. I mean isn't it weird a lot of these "hot and trending artists" came from bad/broken homes, the streets, etc.? I think this song, even this album, in a way represents the entertainment industry. Cuz what happens when Ethel gets out West with this guy? She's drugged and pimped out, then she dies.
funny thing is be4 looking the lyrics i always thought its "worst of me" 😭😭
Oh, what a beautiful love song! Surely they will live happily ever after!

I haven’t been able to cry for months, I just bottle up my stress and then 5:20 hit and I literally burst into tears. Thank you, this album is pure therapy. 10/10

5:20 greatest musical moment in history probably... On like my third go of this record it made me burst into tears it's just sooooo good
I had the same reaction: weeping!
This is my favorite off the album it’s so beautiful and pure
The way this album feels both like a warm blanket and a serial killer yanking that blanket off you
it hurts knowing that this sweet guy will end up literally eating her

@@luckieluckielu Shhh let me enjoy this blissful moment
How can you pick among so many gems.
There's nothing quite like the sense of euphoria and dread Ethel managed to balance so masterfully on this album. "Hey, do you want to see the west with me?" Before listening to Preacher's Daughter all the way through it sounds like an invitation but after it's more of a threat. Love love love!!
I don't even fluent in english, but here I am in front of my tv watching the lyrics and trying to get every part of this song. I'm deeply passionate how Ethel is telling a fucking story of new feelings of hers. This is pure art, thank you Mother ❤️
Such a quintessential American song.
Ethel, you’re a tremendous writer.
These words have power. They pull the listener right into the journey.
And what a voice!
whoa! Power, sensitivity, nuance, phrasing, harmony and range.
A southern song full of hope and promise.
The riffing at the end….sweet.
I
Also sublime instrumentation and arraignment!
Totally amazing work ❤
You know how in a movie a scene can have a new meaning the 2nd time around? This song is like that for me, on first listen it felt like a genuine triumph but on repeated listens, all I feel is dread. This album is so kino.
What is kino?
@@ReubenWalton Cinematic! :)
@@dwellerintheden7973 thanks! Yes it is very cinematic
by far one of my favs on the album. the feeling is unexplainable. "deep southern wet" theres nothing better

I love ethel cain cause its like you can hear church in her music, even when the lyrics arent talking about god. This song especially. I mean, the beautiful singing at the end? Thats something you usually only see in church, and oh my god. Seeing it taken out of that context is amazing. This music feels like liberation
This is my favorite song from this album, it takes me somewhere I've been a million times yet haven't seen it before. It's over 9 minutes long and it feels too short
discovering your music has actually altered my brain and changed the trajectory of my life
Thoroughfare Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You fell in love with America when you were 12 years old
And by 17 you knew you had to see it all
You loved your dad and the love he had for your mother so
You had to get out and go chasin' it's sweet call
[Verse 2]
I met you there in Texas somewhere on the thoroughfare
On the side of the road in some torn up clothes with a pistol in my pocket
I didn’t trust no one but you said "Baby, don’t run, I’ll take you anywhere"
So I hopped right in, outta luck to spend, and at least your truck beats walking
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
Cause lovе's out there and I can’t leavе it be"
And I said "Honey, love's never meant much to me
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Verse 3]
So we made off for California to find your lover, driving day and night
And every small town diner saw our faces at least once or twice
But in these motel rooms, I started to see you differently
Cause for the first time since I was a child, I could see a man who wasn’t angry
[Verse 4]
And he said “It's been a long damn time since I left Florida, no one left to leave, no one left to love
But now that I met you, I finally know just where I’m headin'”
And we found heaven in time where your western sunshine met my deep southern wet
And you got lost in it and yet you found yourself hard pressed for air and sweatin'
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
(Do you wanna see the west with me?)
Cause love's out there and I can’t leave it be"
(I can’t leave it, I can’t leave it)
And I said "Honey, love's never meant that much to me
(Nothing much)
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Bridge]
Once we reached the coast you said "End of the line, we finally hit the edge, after all this time
I didn't find my love but I still made it this far without it"
But then you turned to me and stared into me deep and said "But maybe not, cause look at what I've got
You might not be my love, but, baby, I doubt it"
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
Cause love's out there and I can’t leave it be"
And I said "Honey, love's never meant much to me
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Outro]
Cause in your pickup truck with all of your dumb luck is the only place I think I’d ever wanna be
[Tambourine- and scat-led jam session]
Thank you for your service

I literally cried in the bus earlier listening to this song and now it's 3 AM and I'm crying again lmao
This song is the most perfect thing I have ever heard, makes me cry. every. damn. time. I hear. it.
Placing ads in the middle of this should be illegal
When the song is so long you get an ad in the middle of it lol
Is it weird that this is some of the best country music I have ever heard?
it's just that this is the best song i've ever heard
I’m not sure if any one person inspired you to write those lyrics, and I’ve always felt music in my soul. You wrote about my james. He is the love of my life. I’m swallowing my cry as I try to write this! He is a disabled Veteran and he was a little soldier from the time he could walk. He served 20 years in the US Army, was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan 3 times and he was the best soldier anyone could ask for. Infantry, the front line, 11 Bravo, a Grunt! War does some terrible things to the mind. You see we weren’t made to witness trauma like that. It’s just something the human mind was never programmed to endure. And when we do it leaves lasting imprints in the mind. I see it!
Our lives will never be the same again. When the struggle is too much , it’s hard to hide it.
This song was written about the love of my life. He struggles every day to come to terms with what haunts his mind.! I played him this song and the moment he heard it he sat and stared at the ground and listened to every word.
This song touches my soul. Thank you to all the men and women that served in OEF/OIF!
God bless you both
to me, this is Ethel's version of LDR's Venice Bitch, and not just because they're both "long" tracks. I just feel like they were both trying to say the same thing but in very very different ways. LDR has been my favourite artist for 10 years and now I'm staring to fall in love with EC. I feel like they have similar messages. If they collab that would be ethereal. this song is a fucking masterpiece.
A collab would be magic
THEY NEED TO DO A COLAB
This song is about a kidnapping lmaoooo
Ethel Cain is this generation's Bruce Springsteen 🙌
A bold statement, but a true one
7:00-9:27 the outro is just perfect
5:27 is straight to the bloodstream
Her music has helped me get through some hard times. I'm finally recovering. I can talk about my life without falling apart I don't feel guilty for coming apart and I know to let go when they go no matter if it's by choice or death or betrayal. Because I know I've already survived it all many times over and survived it all. I know my worth and I don't feel like I need anyone to understand I don't have to apologize fir who I am anymore because I know who I am and where I've been and where I'm going. I know my love language and I know I'm not responsible for making others understand it or me. I love me unapologetically. I'm fkn weird and I don't fallow anyone else's steps because I create my own. And you can too. 🥰
aside from the fact he literally eats her at the end, this might be the most romantic song i’ve heard
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but - album spoilers.
I just want to thank The New York Times for bringing me here. This is absolute southern magic.
i need a movie abt this??? yes
Ethel has been through some deep shit. I glad she made it through and able to tell her story through music. Such beautiful music.
cant count how many times I've replayed this song. perfection

We're all getting high on Ethel Cain together ♥️
This is my favourite song off the album, I cant get over how absolutely beautiful it is.

This song at every volume level is its own unique experience.
This is for real the song and also album of the year, no joke
I can't get enough of this track. Its been on repeat all day in my house 😌
Only a beautiful soul could write a song this beautiful.
My favorite new artist and album in many years! Amazing.
This song owns me now
This song is breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you, Ethel. You captured such an emotion.
This is the best song ever made. Everytime I listen to it I love it even more. It’s got the perfect build up and I can see the story so clear in my mind. It makes me feel like I’m in a whole new world. It’s so hauntingly beautiful and tragic.
that outro is just stunning
Beautiful storytelling and that is one of the many reasons I love this album ❤️
This reminds me of the porridge my nan used to make for me
This song leaves me speechless ❤😢
This song is one of the best love songs I've heard but knowing what happens later in the album makes me physically sick and fucks with me psychologically. Hayden has created such a heartbreaking world and I want so much justice for Ethel. Even though she forgives in sun bleached flies I don't think I can ever forgive for her
i just listened to this for the first time and tears. tears flowing down my face because your music continues to capture a feeling, experience, emotion, and mindset that i dont think could be put any better.... this album is entirely cathartic for me and it has touched my soul so deeply already. thank you for creating the music you do
this whole entire piece of art reminds me of 1996 maynard manson reznor and shannon hoon all in one with alanis morisette on top. makes me see and smell the good old days.
Easily one of the best songs I've ever heard in my damn life
Now that i know the full story behind this song , i cry even harder when i hear this song.

Every thing about this song is incredible. Dag, Ethel. DAGGG!

Absolute art is ethel, I've been waiting for something like this for a long time, I hope she stays in that position and doesn't lose it, minimal, pure, deep, overflowing and brilliantly light.

If EC keeps this up she's gonna find herself in the same cannon as Dylan, Young & Springsteen.
