When he said “I miss my comrades” my heart sank, I couldn’t imagine.
1979 version felt better than this. With how much it ignored the book and simply made its own stuff, I find it hard to justify that it carries the same name as its source material.
If not for the name, this could be just run of the mill WW1 movie. And fact that they took the name "all quiet at western front" which reffers to situation when protagonist died, it just shows how disrespectfull director was towards the book when his endind of "all quiet" was full on assault and fight to death.
Did you watch it or are you basing your assertion on a f trailer? Speaking to comments to the first statement, FYI.
Why would you comment this
My grandfather was in front ( Germany side) he never spoken about it. With this movie i can imagine what was like. May his soul rest in peace
Which war?
@@justeliashere What do you think with the context of this trailer
@@Owellivan I thought he was referring to WWII at first.
This book is something all possible recruits should read before going into the armed forces. Wars before WW1 were romanticized as if they were some adventure. The present conflict in Ukraine upholds the current view that war is a meat grinder. Even if you survive you aren’t the same person that comes back.
Agreed, so sad so many will be changed forever due to a money laundering scam by the Democrats. Shameful.
“In War there are no unwounded soldiers”
That's true even seeing a trailer like this gives me weird vibes. It may be an okay movie but I prefer not to watch anything violent anymore.
No, that's just some stupid actor playing politician who is a puppet that developed an idiotic policy with its puppet masters where millions are sent to obviously death traps and fight a battle that cannot be won.
Trench warfare was so horrific. I can’t imagine what those young men went through on both sides.
All warfare is horrific
But white male privilege and all that jazz?
The scene at 0:48 and the terrified expressions really showed how terrifying the war was.
Going on right now in Ukraine- what Russia brought to terrorize everyone - their specialty. Ukraine is currently fighting WWIII for the rest of us right now.
It has a happy ending in that the survivors got to go back to Germany and enjoy the good economic conditions and relaxing times in their middle age.
Lol
Yep, Germany was definitely unfairly the scapegoat WWI.
@@lightup6751 so true. A lot of people actually blame chemical warfare on the Germans too, while the French were pioneers in the use of Capsaicin (pepper spray/teargas) AND Phosgene (the gas that caused the most deaths in WW1, it wasn't actually mustard)
Not mentioning the russians who went home and had quiet life until 40s. :) Not
@@lightup6751 Honestly if the Allies in WW1 didn’t be as ridiculous with their demands we might have not even had a WW2
That looks insane. I couldn't imagine fighting in that war.
Can you imagine fighting now in Ukraine ?
Looks like great potential to be a real masterpiece remake.
The early reviews say it is.
@@CRM-114 "Best battle scenes ever but it's only pretty good"
It is not remake. I can not stress this enough. This film does not follow the story of book at all. Only thing this film has common with the book its name is stealing is that it is WW1 movie from perspective of German foot soldier. And even that is not completely true since they are throwing in between viewpoints of generals and diplomats.
It is nice WW1 movie, but it definitely is not good enough to be worthy of using the title "All quiet on western front"
Not a remake. One can read AQOTWF or War and Peace or whatever and 2 completely viewpoints, thematic strength elements and, thus, scripts can come from any piece of literature. Not a remake as he took it from the German perspective, German language as book is written in, which isnt done often, thus probing a completely different viewpoint , different take, different script. No remake.
@@DoctorChained he is correct about pretty good. I've seen better battle scenes, but these are impressive.
My great great uncle, Wilhelm Otto Mundle, fought for Germany in WW1 and died in the Battle of the Somme on the Western Front at the hands of the French. He was a young man just like Albert and Paul (ironically, Wilhelm’s brother, my great grandfather who immigrated to America, was named Paul. And Paul’s son, my grandfather, is named Albert). Really enjoyed this film❤
This actually looks to be a really good movie.
It really was. I saw it at the Paris theater in NYC. And I really enjoyed it.
I didn't enjoy it, I cried tons
You can get ptsd by the film!
So excited to see more movies about the First World War.
Sweet I hope Netflix keeps it up with movies like this. Seems hit or miss... This is a freaking hit
Glad it's actual germans instead of british actors
and yet US version is dubbed by English actors....frustrating, I'd rather read subtitles.
@@dthorne4602 I read the subtitles and it made the movie more immersive and impactful. I recommend it highly.
@@curehead9877 yeah, that would be the preferred way to watch it for sure. But it is still blue for no reason. I think it would have been better to just make it black and white rather than tint it a weird blue color for no reason.
@@dthorne4602 I think primarily why there is a blue tint throughout the movie. Its to transcend the emotions of being incredibly cold, deppressed to get rid of any form of happiness and just replace it with an aura of negativity for the viewers. Due to the colour represents deppression, coldness and just overall general negativity, and to not manipulate the viewer into believing that this movie is not about herorism but the complete form of useless deaths especially from the young public of Germany in this Era. And to allow the viewer to immerse themselves into the useless deaths and how horrible war truly is.
For me primarily, I enjoyed this movie and the overall blue tint. But i can completely understand where you are completely coming from.
@@curehead9877 yeah, that may be what they thought. Doesn't work at all. Movie looks like CGI. Bad artistic choice.
Ugh, my heart can't take a film like this.
This was the very first "modern" war...men couldn't WAIT to go to war- totally oblivious to what it would really be like.
Entire family lines were wiped out...
It was truly horrific
Now , in russia there are cases when both brothers and their sons are taken to front. Women left devastated.
@@Korozzz Absolutely horrific, man...It's so damned unfair
Not correct. The US Civil War from 1864 to the end, showed the world the horrors to come. Unfortunately, the world didn't see it.
Watched it with my Dad on Christmas morning, really realistic I liked it alot
I saw the 1930 original film can’t wait to see this !
The 1970s adaptation is pretty good as well, but this is the first time its actually in German. I think that gives it an element of realism that the other films lacked, although the English and American actors in those films helped to humanise a dehumanised enemy, and present a shared experience of the horrors of war.
the book was published in 1928, the author described the horrors of ww1 he witnessed 10 years ago. This also made into a controversial black and white movie in 1930.
Been waiting for this movie for so long since first trailer
Whew, I'm going to watch this the second it comes out!
I think the greatest compliment i can give this movie is that i dont have it in me to watch it. It looks a bit TOO good., if you know what i mean.
I think the movie is fantastic, but I would love to know why the ending does not match the book. - The ending of the book is meaningful and makes sense with the title. And Paul makes a decision (I think) for us to ponder and explore. We lose these two aspects in this movie.
Because this movie is not remake. It does not follow the book at all. Onle common thing this has with the book is that it is WW1 from german soldier perspective. Honestly, they should have used different name than "all quiet on western front"
Best war movie I've ever seen. Really good stuff 👏
why.. what makes it better than SPR
@Razvan Florentin Popescu SPR had some really long sequences in the middle that were forgettable it was more about several really amazing battle sequences such as the beginning and end and then the attack on the MG34 radar station
This film will stay with you for a while.....
Gives me “Come and See” vibes
I am very much looking forward in watching this film- Looks unique in its own …

Finally a good ww1 film
The original 1930’s movie or whenever was so depressing. It left a whole in my soul
then it achieved its goal, its not meant to make you feel good, its depicting the harsh, brutal realities of war.
It just left a half in my soul

@@negroantonio28 then you might as well watch real war footage. I saw this trailer and it was enough for me. I don't want to have nightmares for months
Such an incredible shame that this masterpiece classic is stuck on Netflix, when they still haven't ceased or denounced their open financial backing and ideological support of terrorism and CP.
St. Chamond scene was horror! Best ww1 movie i ever seen
I'd love to watch this in a cinema but unfortunately Australian cinemas don't screen Netflix films
That's a real pity, I was able to see the film in the theatre in Germany, only there in the theatre could the film unfold its full effect in picture and sound!
Definitely watch it on a big screen with a sound system. I am sure that if the film had been released for cinemas worldwide, it would have been a huge success.
Their showing it in cinemas here In Adelaide SA.
Same goes for the netherlands, im actually guning that they did not do it. Such a missed opportunity

Something with huge potential being released on Netflix ? The guy who greenlit it needs a raise.
The 🦌 deer Hunter.
I want to listen the sound track that is used in this video
Netflix decided to add some dirt on characters' suits? Unbelievable. At least a good academic light remains the same.
Is that will be available in 4k bluray ?
I'm not into VOD things.
It puts peoples whining about the "covid stay at home rule" in perspective.
We need more movies like this, am I right?
Just read the book.
I would love to sit and watch this. I wonder of there is a English audio for it or is it just subtitles only?
For immersive experience, it's better with subtitles because this is the POV of a German soldier in World War 1
@@quince_prince6336 I agree with you completely, I just normally lose interest in films that i have to keep reading subtitles throughout the whole film. I also hate films that are poorly done with audio too so maybe it would be better just watching in subtitles.
@@bbay1977 I’d say watch it with subtitles, so you then hear, feel what the actor and director have actually done. Voice over takes you out of it, I think. They try do do a good job of course, but they’re not there for filming in the fields, during battles, etc.. They even dub over screams, grunts, stuff like that, and fights are just not as good like The Raid dubbed version. Plus, there are some great German actors in this like Daniel Bruhl who I think can be an Oscar, award winning actor given the right role. This might also be more like 1917 that didn’t have much dialogue.
@@BB-tt6fl ibe neber watched any German films so i think this will be my first one for sure. I enjoy watching films like this and enjoyed the Pacific and Band of Brothers. I will 100% watch this as the director intended for me to watch it.
I think there will be, but not now. Maybe some months later.
Id, love to watch this with my boyfriend. But the violence looks extreme and i dont want to trigger his PTSD. Are there any PreShowing Veterans Talking about this?
(My boyfriend was active combat duty in Afghanistan, and while i know this is different, war is always the same for PRSD survivors.
If the original was full of constant screaming, then I’m sure it’s not a great choice.
I don’t think this will be good to watch with your boyfriend. It will definitely trigger ptsd
@@CRM-114 more intense than hacksaw ridge and saving private ryan?
@@SnepBlepVR Save Private Ryan with ripped bodies was already tough, something similar awaits the viewer here.
In this film, soldiers are crushed by tanks, torn apart by artillery shells, cruelly and mercilessly fought duels between soldiers with knives, folding spades and bayonets.
Claustrophobia and horror in collapsing trenches with buried people, machine guns that kill dozens of soldiers in one blow, like in a video game.
It is definitely the scariest war film with real-looking battle scenes in many years.
For the first time since the 1930 film, we get to see the real, unbelievable cruelty and merciless WW1 on screen.
Perhaps not suitable entertainment for people with PTSD.
I was in the theatre, where the film's big screen and sound make it even tougher.
At the end credits, the audience still sat together in silence, like a collective minute's silence to the many millions of young men who died senselessly in this senseless war.
As a retired therapist I would not recommend this for him to view, as it would trigger PTS
It is now just Post Traumatic Stress without the Syndrome part in the DSM V

There is nothing quiet about this front
Im from germany and the original titel is "Im Westen nichts neues" wich means nothing new on the western front.
Just poorly translated.
That was the point. The English title of the book (and films) is supposed to be full of bitter irony.
The main character is killed on a day when the high command reports a "quiet" day on the front.
1917, Battlefield 1, All quiet on the western front.... WW1 is where the money's at, WW2's oversaturated

I’m pretty sure WWI and WWII have been milked enough for movies and video games
There arent a lot showing the german side
This movie was originally created to show the flip side of how war is usually portrayed, video games and movies usually show how it’s all about honor and glory but this one is meant to show how horrific it actually is
There are plenty of ww2 movies but a lot of them are not great but when a director does them right its amazing. As for ww1 there really aren't many out there
Let's all go watch this, say "war is terrible", and then continuing voting for politicians that lead us into wars.
Sorry but it lost me with the subtitles
Probably for the best - there will be another Marvel film along soon.

This looks very little like the book
I hope it doesn't look like the book or else we will be reading a bunch of text on a screen instead of watching a movie.

Low the 1979 rating !
This is exactly what we're seeing in Ukraine.
What Russia brought to Ukraine - and if we don't stop them now, ours will end up going like this, too.
All Quiet to the Western Front should be released in Russia as an effort to discourage Russians citizens from taking parts in the invasion against Ukraine.
Battlefield 1 flashbacks
1917 2?
1917 is certainly a well-made film, but compared to All Quiet on the Western Front it is very weak as far as the realities of WW1 are concerned. 1917 remains on the surface at most, almost without depth.
It does not tell what WW1 was really like.
The Germans, as so often in British and US war films, are only portrayed one-dimensionally.
All quiet....... gets very deep under the skin, it takes the viewer to the battlefield, it brings you to the edge of your seats!
I'm sure 1917 would have disappointed viewers if All quiet.... had hit the theatres before this film.
Great movie 🎥
Do you have any idea why this novel doesn't make sense as a movie? If you don't, I hope that you take the time to read the pages and pages dedicated to horses slowly expiring on the battlefield. This book should not be a 2 hour experience.

Well it’s about war…
War sucks.
Worst movie score since the advent of sound in pictures.
ratio
Pretty good movie, but overrated IMO. Visual style looked phony and kept taking me out of the movie since it never felt like a real place or characters, especially 100 years ago. I have no idea why they chose to tint the movie blue, it looks artificial and weird and doesn't put you back in 1918. I was constantly taken out of the scenes by the artificial look of the lighting and skin on the guys. Often the actors looked like CGI generated characters. It took me a while to really figure out who the protagonist was, and once I did, I didn't find him very believable in the various scenarios he was in, though he did have some good moments. I would have preferred subtitles rather than English accented overdubs - if I watch it again, I would watch the German version with subtitles. Highlights for me are great prop and vehicle details and the stabbing/second thoughts scene in the blast crater, the heart of the movie for sure. If you want a more gripping and immersive WWI movie, I'd suggest "They shall not Grow Old' or "1917" (also has modern visual gimmicks) before this one.
