I don't envy you working with HIMI, I have such a hard time with gouache working from cups or tubes because I find it too fussy and/or wasteful. I ended up buying M Graham because it rewets SO easily, I just use fresh white and all the other colors are dry in a palette unless I need a big blob for a background or something. You're so talented, I've been enjoying watching your progress with gouache!

    • @hambot

I get what you mean! I can't fully explain why miya is hard to mix with. I'm trying to understand it but after trying the holbein i now understand the difference between professional quality and student. After trying it,i immediately ordered one big tube of the white. Thanks for the comment, Sarah ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I think your muddy problem is coming from titanium white. It is very opaque and it dulls down the colour loads, you are better to use a zinc white to mix with because it is more transparent. I really appreciate this video, I usually paint landscapes and I always start with darker colours but it makes sense to have the lighter one first because it is harder to get lighter colours from the darker colours without making them muddy or weird even with the zinc white!

Ty!! I purchased the himi set because I’m new to using gouache, and wanted to have a fairly inexpensive set to practice with + build the consistency of painting everyday (I come from a background of painting with oils and the amount of time it takes to mix my palette + clean up afterwards wasn’t working with my schedule.) I’ve been doing research on other brands to try in the future, and I’ll probably go with Holbein!

Would it be better to mix the paint with a silicone stylus/brush thing?
I usually prefer using them for pre-mixing since it doesn't have bristles that could trap the previous colors and slow the process, plus the silicone makes it easier to just smoosh it onto the palette and waste less.
