    for me the real game changer was switching my paper for cotton one. Even the cheaper one that i did'n really like for my watercolours made my life so much easier. It blends great but also layering isn't that much of a problem anymore

      Thank you so much! It's like that for my process most of the time, I'd get most of it done and then spend so much more time finishing up the details!

    the reason gouache is so opaque, reactivates much easier and why it has matt finish is one simple ingredient - chalk. Depending on a brand amount of chalk within your paints can vary. If you add powdered chalk to your tube watercolours it most likely will turn into gouache!

    Can you tell me if these are environmentally friendly and non-toxic options ? If not can you direct me to some options of gouache paint that are non-toxic and eco-friendly ? I also would like to know how safe it is to use these indoors or should they be used with a window open, ventilation system in place, or is it best/safest to use them in an outdoor environment ? I am sorry for so many questions but as someone interested in starting analog paintings rather than digital paintings I want to choose only the best options as I don't have the best environment for ventilation currently and I don't have anything like a studio for painting.... I also want to ensure my artist activities will not cause harm to the environment as much as possible. Thank you for your time...

    12:25 remarkable how much this layer lightened when it dried up at a few seconds after this timestamp. I would’ve been afraid to lay down something so bold on top of my first washes, but it worked perfectly once it dried. Anticipating these value shifts will take a lot of practice, i can see!

  • @murraykriner9425
    @murraykriner9425 3 роки тому +12

    A wonderful tutorial. Only once have I heard this medium so well spoken of for its illustrative nuance and versatility for finish or study work. The chemistry of your color selections has more to do with the working qualities than you know. A simple thing like paper choices will often impact immensely the color saturation and color key that is ultimately achieved in the final piece, as sizing agents are mixed with different starches to create the paper your painting on. The use of common glycerin can tincture the hue, but aide in helping the flow quality while reactivating your colors for blending one or two earlier passages previously laid. Glad I found your content today. Its ever a joy to hear your speaking on a media you truly treasure using. Have a great weekend.

    • @murraykriner9425
      @murraykriner9425 3 роки тому +1

      @artofaauditor my earlier reply was not accepted, so I'll conserve content and say that only the these materials suffer from aging over a time, with unmouted works being susceptible to blistering, cracking, and some darkening with time, as the inert fillers oxidize with heating and light exposure being the culprit. Its a common problem with certain pigments and vehicles like the Gum Arabic that are used in most water-based media that hasn't an acrylic carrier. Its the reason galleries and museums circulate their collections throughout the season of display, in the vain hope that their state of preservation is unchanged. Warm regards, and very best wishes.

    The reason why Gouache is commonly referred to as "opaque watercolor" is the fact that it uses the same binder as watercolor - gum arabic.
    The way you paint skin with Gouache is stunning 😍

      но в любом случае, это две разные краски, так как акварель буквально своим название подразумевает, что это прозрачная краска, которая просвечивает бумагу через слой акварели.

    hello Ham
    this is so far the most helpful gouache tutorial that is so beginner-friendly that even an airhead like me could understand it. thank you, really. i, for the life of me couldn't figure out how to work with more opaque paint and try to purchase gouache to transition myself from watercolour to acrylic or even oil paint. I usually put too much paint without the staging as you did in this video because i thought gouache's matte finish can be achieved directly by using the creamy consistency. hopefully that makes sense (?)
    anyway super helpful and your work always inspires me to sit down and paint. thank you

    • @alicia-lobo
      @alicia-lobo 3 роки тому

      I think it depends on what you're going for. I often do illustrations with well-delimited flat areas of colour (see Tom Haugomat for a similar style - although he mainly uses acrylic markers) and for that I tend to go straight into cream consistency, which works just fine for me. When I'm doing a more "rendered" piece, with softer transitions between colours (like this one from Ham) I tend to start at the milk or coffee level and go up from there. I don't have the patience for tea, but maybe that would help 😂

    • @meru-rc7ur
      @meru-rc7ur 3 роки тому

      @@alicia-lobo I see, thanks for the insight! I'm new to painting so its nice getting some helpful tips from people who has more experience. I think i also dont have the patience for the tea, after all, so i might as well try to have a more well-defined areas :)

    • @alicia-lobo
      @alicia-lobo 3 роки тому

      @@meru-rc7ur You're welcome, happy to share my limited knowledge! Tbh even though I started painting a couple of years ago I can't make much time for practice so I still feel like a beginner. I feel there is so much to learn at once when you start painting (colour, composition, how to mix paint to the right consistency and colour, how to handle brushes,...) that it can get a bit overwhelming. The flat style I mentioned before has helped me by letting me focus on a couple of those things and leaving out others like blending and gradients. Now that I feel pretty comfortable with handling the paint and brushes I'm also learning the more rendered style, but I still really enjoy the flat one. I think it's a great idea to start with something like that :)
