  • I keep heading further south, stopping at a beach known for petrified wood to see if I could find an elusive round. It was a beautiful day and the area is very picturesque, finding fossils was a bonus!

On the Yellowstone River in Montana, USA, they find a lot of "Agatized Wood". Some of the inclusions might be Agate.. We call the smaller rounds "Limb Casts".. Fun to travel with you! Thanks for sharing with us!!

Do you have a way for someone to send you pictures? Where I live at there isn't anyone who knows anything about fossils that can help me identify what I have. I would love to show you my round piece of petrified wood, it is a perfectly round piece and very well preserved with no chips or broken piece off it, to me it looks like a a really thick coaster lol. You are very blessed to be in such beautiful and peaceful country, thank you for sharing your time and beautiful pieces of our past with us. Be safe and happy hunting.

only the temperature is not quite the same.. even Durbs winter sea is warmer than the summer sea here... also the hillsides are overgrazed and terraced by 5$^$%^ sheep... the algae on the rocks comes from nitrate (and urine) runoff from the farms.

Some of our beaches here in the USA have white beach sand that is really crushed shell. It is crushed so small it feels like sugar. We call it sugar sand even though it is not really sand. We can find sharks teeth in some dirt that is used for filling low spots in dirt driveways. What we call parking at home.

I have alot of really amazing and very well preserved fossils and I cant find anyone who can help me identify them. I also have some pieces of petrified wood, theyre not very big but theyre pretty nice. Happy hunting everyone.

Aww you didn't visit Curio Bay. You would have found dozens of petrified trees there out in the open, several of them whole trees. You went as far as I have been at the lagoon with the petrified wood in it. Pity you didn't find big flat sheets of forest floor (leaves). I was there a week ago and only found one small piece. You also didn't visit the official most southern point of the South Island at Slope Point which is right next to the lagoon. You would have found more wood there as well as rhyolites that are also found in Antarctica and were once part of Antarctica. If you are ever down this way again, ask the Otago club for a guide and you could also get access to several private farms. Did you see the giant and very orange whale bone outside the museum? That came from Slope Point.
