The fact that Gyllenhaal didn't even get nominated shows how invalid the academy is. 7 years on, and his performance is arguably more talked about than the other nominees of that year.
start your own
Gyllenhall's performance in this film was amazing. His character managed to come off as both a terrible person and also someone who is strangely charismatic and likeable.
like a sociopath
Spot on
I disagree with the idea that he doesn't have a character arc. At the beginning he's getting jerked around in negotiations. By the end, he's the cynical negotiator.
That only paints a fraction of the picture.
It would be like a mob movie starting out by painting the picture of poverty and then jumping right into the character being a heartless hitman.
Plus, the movie shows him to be a narcissistic thief from the very beginning.
Lou wasn't supposed to be a relatable character sprung up as an outcome of "hustle culture" and he isn't.
The movie is about how actual media entities operate especially mainstream media.
You wouldn't get that if you had no understanding of how media companies operate previous to watching the movie.
The movie doesn't spoon feed you the backstory or even indicate the backstory.
Well, the film did paint the context of the economy and job market being a struggle and he did struggle with getting work.
However, that doesn't totally justify or even explain away how(not why) he is the type of person he is.
It would be like a mob movie showing the context of poverty and then jumping right into someone becoming a hit man with no morals.
Sounds like it makes sense in theory, but doesn't in reality when observing actual human behavior.
You are correct about the media though.
I found this movie while binging Jake Gyllenhaal films and it is probably one of my favorite films. It captures Lou as such a bad person but you almost want him to succeed.
This is the first film I watched that had Jake Gyllenhaal. He is one of the most talent actors of all time
It scares me how true this is
Thanks for being the new channel I binge watch man, its all so polished!
He is pure evil and so likeable at the same time!! Genius acting!!
Jake is a top tier actor. I'm amazed on his performance in Donnie Darko even tho he was so young at that time
Great analysis. Keep it up!
Well said! It's very easy to glorify a terrible character (and well overdone). It takes a special kind of story telling for them succeed without making them the hero.
Wow! I really enjoyed Nightcrawler when I watched it, and I loved this analysis since it made me love the movie more. Thanks!
I really enjoyed your video! Good work! :)
Thank you!
For some reason, Nightcrawler crawled under my radar and I missed the chance to see it. Now that you kindly reminded me, I'm going to check this one out^^
wow, DUDE. nice work. greetings from berlin.
Thank you!
Why are the biggest movie buffs always the most oblivious to the message being portrayed in the movies they watch?
It reminds me a lot of his character from Zodiac!
I watch it over and over
woo new upload
Hope you like it!
@@BryceEdwardBrown i did! I haven't heard of the movie so it was cool to watch it
I love nightcrawler... yes lou is a terrible person... but it is a fun movie and from start to finish I never get bored.
Can you explain to me what he did to make him bad? Sorry it’s just not clicking
I get that he attacked a police guard but what else did he do?
@@Will-yv9il I'll finish dinner and I'll jog my memory.
one of my fav movies.
Same! I can't stop watching it
Jake Gyllenhaal is two or three comedies away from having a solid desert island catalogue of movies.
I don't feel that this explains the ending with his new employees.
Fucking love nightcrawler
SAME!
I really hated him at the end .. i want him to be catched by the police.
Wtf. Why is EVERYONE only reviewing or breaking down nightcrawler now.. it was a 2014 when it was released. Guess everyone gets on the bandwagon now
I used to know Louis Bloom... President of Island Records. Really.
There are many Lou Blooms walking around. That's part of why this movie is so mesmerizing and so scary.
This is a great film and was a really good performance lol. I hated Lou so much by the end lol
I was genuinely disappointed that the film didn't end in CCTV footage gone viral where Lou dies in some kind of graphic vehicle/pedestrian accident.
The wolf in sheep's clothing act seriously made some primitive part of my brain act up and I honestly began hating the guy. The more I watched the more I was repulsed by everything about him. Brilliant acting.
