Let's take a moment to appreciate that he recorded the video very early in the morning, when fewer people would be at the gas station and there's a better chance he wouldn't hold up the pump while making the video. Very thoughtful and considerate. Some points that are probably worth noting to a rookie gas pumper: - avoid letting your car's gas tank level get below one-quarter full. You'll risk damaging the fuel pump, fuel filter, and maybe the engine itself if you run low or out of gas. - the diesel pump filler nozzles are usually a different design than the standard gasoline nozzles. You shouldn't be able to fit a diesel nozzle into a regular gas fuel filler opening. This, plus the green color he mentioned, are by design to help avoid putting diesel gas into your standard gas vehicle. - never leave your engine running while filling the gas tank. - if you get back into your vehicle while the gas is being pumped, always touch a metal surface (car roof or door, for example) before touching the gas pump again. This helps to discharge static electricity which may have formed when you re-entered the car.
Running the tank down was more a problem on metal fuel tanks, they are all plastic now. Replace your fuel filter every couple of years and you can run it onto the red just fine.

Been driving 14 years and I always hand squeeze at the pump because I wasn't taught there was a lever or how to hold it in place. By the time I realized there was, I was too embarrassed to even ask about it! This just gave me the confidence to try putting the lever in place for the first time. Thank you!
I squeezed also until my best friend laughed at me and showed me the lever 😄 before that I could never figure out why other people could release the nozzle but I had to hold it. Also, for those that haven't pumped gas before, you can release the lever before it fills up and clicks if you need to stop the pump.
17 year old here, never really had a father figure in my life and all of your videos are incredibly helpful. Thank you for everything you do and just know that you help so many people.
Another tip is that when you unscrew the gas cap it fits perfect on the little door that covers it up. It help from keeping it hanging or if you don’t have the plastic strap still to it.
So ... my mother came up here for a funeral about 10 yrs ago , without my father. We had a car for her to use while here but it needed gas. She said we'll you'll have to come with me I don't know how to pump gas. I said ..huh? How do you get that old and not know? Well, my father always did it. He was old school and I just never imagined someone could go through life and not know this. So very helpful for all ages! We got gas for 4.09 yesterday, but it was at one of the gas stations, you may not live thru getting it. Lol our town is super scary now. Also you don't want to use card at pump. More than likely, a skimmer is on it. Great video. So nice that early when it's quiet! Ty for taking the time for this . Great job
Yeah, definitely twist the cap until it clicks. Mine twists really hard when closing it so I was always worried it was going to break and would just snug it. However, with all the emissions controls on cars these days, I would get a lot of check engine lights from it. And, another tip. If you're check engine light comes on, always try tightening the gas cap first and drive it through about 5 key cycles to see if it goes off. Gas caps are super sensitive these days.
This was a great explanation. In my country (Brazil), we have people working at the gas stations who fill up our tanks. It's not possible to just do it yourself. The first time I travelled to the USA I rented a car and was quite puzzled as to what to do. I'm sure everyone was judging me, since I was on my twenties, and seemed clueless. I did learn eventually, but every time I travel, I still get a little nervous when I have to do this.
Until recently there were only 2 states where its illegal to pump your own gas, oregon and vermont, but in 2023 oregon passed a bill where you can pump your own gas but theres still attendents so you dont HAVE to.
I remember the first time I had to pump gas, I was literally terrified. My parents didn't believe that this was something that had to be taught, they just told me to go do it... I still get some anxiety doing it now. Just so much I could do wrong and then there are lines and people watching making in more difficult lol
yeah, me too. never was taught. my parents just told me to get out of the car and do it. and if i didn’t know what to do it was an issue. we’re not born knowing things - we only know what we’re taught. i’m sorry you had this experience. i wish i had this channel when i was younger. i enjoy watching it now just because i have such an appreciation for what he’s doing. 💜
Went through the same thing. Parents are too " busy " for me ... still on this learning journey as i type this. Honestly wouldn't care but i need to in order to move on from this current toxic hell i'm going through. Hope it got better for you 👍
For many of us, it’s simple and we can handle this situation with ease. But in this world, there are some people who desperately need this kind of help and support. Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom, Pop!
I remember the first time we went to Oregon and my dad argued with the guy for 10 min before the guy gave up and walked away. My dad didn't believe the guy that it was a law and thought it was ridiculous 🤣🤣😂😂 he was a John Wayne type that can pump his own darn gas 🤣 I miss him lol
I am 42 years old myself, and I happened to come across your videos. I love them! I know these were probably initially made for young people who don't know how to do a lot of things, but for my personal story here .... I grew up in a household and environment where my father didn't do anything with us. He didn't spend any time with us, didn't teach us anything. I was never taught how to cook, how to manage bills or money. To this day, I still don't know how to change the oil in a car. I don't know how to change a doorknob either (I saw that video of yours, so I will definitely have to check it out). I have grown up not knowing a lot of stuff. I don't know how to work on cars. My brother does. My brother can tear down an engine to get to the problem, figure it out, fix it, and put everything back together again with no issues. That shocks me. But yeah. Thank you so much for all you do for everyone in here. I am proof that these videos aren't just for youth. It's also for people who don't know how to do a lot of it themselves.
I'm surprised at how even very basic things like pumping gas are so different in the US compared to here in the UK. Thanks for your videos, they are fascinating.
A few tips when getting gas if you carry a purse: Just get out your cash or credit card, then LOCK YOUR CAR while filling up. Someone could easily open the passenger side door when you are distracted and grab your purse. Also, on my car, the flap over the gas cap does not open if the car is locked, so I have to open that flap when I step out of my car, and then I quickly lock my car. After I put my gas cap back on, the flap will not close all the way until I am back in my car and lock the doors and then it clicks closed by itself. Every car probably has different quirks like this. By the way, I just learned how to lock the trigger on the gas pump in place a few years ago. My ENTIRE life I stood there and squeezed the trigger as my tank filled. And I am 60! 🤪 Anyway, Dad, I appreciate you, because I lost my Dad 35 years ago, and I miss him, but you and your good advice and dad jokes are good therapy. ❤
I have never watched the videos of this channel. But I read about this channel a year ago. I just cried at that time. I grew up without a father. I always thought it wouldn't be a problem for me. But it wasn't like that. When I first read about this channel, I realized how lonely I was. I was very smart as a child and I learned things very easily. But in those moments, I didn't have a father to teach me. My reason for writing this today. I want to say thank you to Mr. Kenney for being a Dad to thousands of young men like me.
I was one of those people, Dad! My husband actually showed me that last year. I've been driving since I was 16, but legally since I was 23 and I was told this at 50!! They've come a long ways from having the gas under the license plate!! Thank you so much for mentioning to pull up to the front pump!!
I'm 22 and I suck at adulting lol. I don't have a father figure to go to for help and I'm embarrassed to ask my mom because she assumes that because of my age I should be able to do things without having to be taught them. So thank you so much for helping young adults (and probably older adults too lol) learn new things without judging them for their lack of knowledge :)
I didn't know the thing about identifying which side of the car the gas tank is on from the dashboard lights until I was 34. Wish I had known that sooner! Thanks for teaching this to the kids!
My dad passed away January 25, 1997. I was only 26 years old. He taught me everything he could, but I needed him for so much longer. Having your channel is an absolute game changer. No, I still can't pick up my phone and ask him, but I'm no longer winging it. I have my hammer, duct tape, my wire clothes hanger, and your videos. I'm ready to take on the world again. Lol
Rob, Dad, if you see this.. I too grew up without a Dad. It’s been my Mom & I since day one. Though I’m 22 now, I don’t need this video, I appreciate these videos, how wholesome they are, how honest and genuine they are. I’m brand new here, first time on your channel but I’ll be sure to share. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Dad! This will be so helpful to so many people. When I saw the topic, I have to admit my first thought was, "Who doesn't know how to pump their own gas?" But out of curiosity, I watched the video and all my memories of getting confused by the process when I first got my driver's license came flooding back. I'm 62 now, so it's been a long time since then. And, of course, there have been so many changes in the process over the years, too, like the technology at the pumps that allows people to pay there, instead of in the gas station store. I've even stuck my credit card in the wrong slot on pumps with more than one for different purposes, and once pressed the button for 89 octane instead of 87 because of an unusual pump that had reversed buttons, so this reminded me to "read the pump." Also, I only learned a couple of years ago about the little arrow on cars' dashboard gas gauges that shows what side the gauge is on. That's actually very useful for me, even though I've had the same car for 16 years, because sometimes I forget. It's also helpful for a rental car, if I didn't pay attention to that before I started driving it. In addition, I've met some women whose husbands always did the driving and the gas filling, etc., and then they become widowed and find it so stressful to have to drive themselves now and put gas in the tank, get oil changes, etc., so your gentle video could be so helpful to them. So glad to have you as my dad!
Wow, I have never seen the squishy push-down thing. 04:30 Not in my whole life (I'm 53). We don't have those here in SC that I know of. I check your videos for anything I need to forward to my teenaged son. Love your channel.
This was SO helpful. I've never filled my car, as my hubby always does it for me, but it's important for me to know how in case he's not available. Thanks so much. And I love your Dad jokes! :)
I want you to know you brought this young man tears of joy in knowing that there’s SOMEONE out there finally being there for us… even if thru this media
I've been driving for over 20 years and never learned how to pump gas / petrol. I live in a region where they have attendants. This is a lot more useful than you might think!
Thanks for the video! The details are bit different here in Europe, but the general idea is the same. And let's not even start about the price, your gas is CHEAP!! I was never taught this, my dad never mentioned this when I learned to drive. The first time I had to pump gas was with the company van (I couldn't even FIND the filler cap at first), using a company credit card which had me terrified I would do something wrong! 6 years on, and I'm still always triple checking whether I'm getting the right fuel, never want to make that mistake... Charging an electric car for the first time, was again such a new experience that no-one thought needed explaining (in the end, it didn't, but still, nerve wracking for some people the first time)
Love your channel. My dad passed away a few months ago and he didn't had enough time to teach me many practical things. I'm sure he would love to teach me everything... If he only had time... Thank you for this channel ❤️
That was VERY helpful. Your videos have helped so much! There were so many things I didn't know, was curious about, or was scared of doing (like pumping gas). Now, I'm more knowledgeable and less anxious about the whole "adulting" thing. I'm a very grateful kid, thanks, Dad!
I even learned something that here in the uk its the opposite green is for regular unleaded and black is for diesel. Was a fun watch to see how different a simple thing is in different parts of the world
I appreciate that you made this video. I'm 45 and at this point I know how to pump gas. It actually throws me off if I go into a station with full service 😂 But, when I took driver's Ed in high school I asked "how do you know when the gas tank is full?" and my instructor looked at me like I was an idiot and never actually answered my question. I went home upset and my mom calmly took me to the gas station and taught me how to pump gas. I still have trouble getting the handle to click so it pumps automatically but I can get the job done. Thank you for your patient videos never making us feel like idiots if we don't know something that seems common sense.
Your mom handled that well. 👏 A little patience and understanding go a long way. Some folks (especially bosses 😁) forget no one is born knowing everything. We all have to learn.
This is good advice! I have an older brother who is the age to drive and wants to drive and he needs basic tips like filling up gas and other. Thank you for making a video about this!
Hello kind sir. You said not to top your tank off when it clicks into the position when it hits full. This is absolutely correct. I'm a technician and I cannot count on my hand how many times we have ran into this with people "topping" their tanks off. What happens is when you fill it to far it can cause fuel to enter your evap canister and damage the filter inside of it. The canister is part of the emissions system on your vehicle. Also anyone who does not know what fuel their car takes, read your owners manual or look inside the gas door it will tell you the vehicles minimum recommended octane rating there.
Never had a dad, he left me before I was born. I cry every time I watch you. Haven’t stumbled upon your channel in a while. Thank you so much for being such a good online dad to us all, hats off to you sir.

wow, this couldn't come at a better time because I'm half way done with my motorcycle license and I'm always nervous going to the gas station. Thanks for the knowledge and confident boost on how to pump gas😬
You explained it very well. When a person comes from a country where the gas is filled by the pump helper one does not know how to fill the gas. I know people living in US will say “ it is very easy” . The new comer is always anxious when they have to fill gas. It is something one has to learn when you start driving a car. Moreover , in UK , the car steering wheel is on the right side and in US on the left. Driving the other way around also causes anxiety for the driver. Thanks for you video . I wish you could make some more videos showing more details - every year workers come from British colonies and for them it is a nightmare. Thanks
I want to tell you tht im in mid of my age and yr video helped me, in my back home country all the gas stations are NOT self serving and their staff Do this for ALL the cars and the driver Stays in the car and pay at the end! So it took me time to not be anxious abt filling my car😊thanks
Our gas station always pumped the gas, but they closed. Panic stricken, I finally had to pump gas myself! Most always a kind man next to me would offer to do it. My sister would roll her eyes. Thanks, Dad. You truly are appreciated. Happy New Year! 🙂
It's like you heard my need!!! I traveled out of Jersey for the weekend and stood there looking at the pump hoping it would yield the answers lol Thanks dad! 😊
Don’t forget to make note of which pump you’re at if you need to go inside!! It’s the number you see posted near the pump. Normally the people inside will know, but when it’s busy you’ll have to tell them. If you’re somewhere and need help there is usually a help button too!! Had to do that once when one had a locking lever I had never seen. It was so awkward but hilarious. You got this, kids! 😄
Exactly the video that I needed! Haven't drove a car for 10+ years and forgot many things. Also I would be too ashamed to ask the question - How to pump gas. :D Thank you!

My dad died before I learned how to drive- or pump gas. I had to ask my manager to come with me and show me and I swear to goodness it was so humiliating. Dad, I wish I could have watched this sooner, you’re fantastic
Lol, I remember when I first got my licence, I got so nervous come fuel time cos didn't know how to use the fuel pumps, I literally looked it up online cos I had no idea. On my learners, my father would always fill up the vehicle and send me in to the servo to pay, I never got to try it myself cos I suppose its one of those easy tasks you do all the time and he thought I'd just know. Nice tutorial, sure would have helped me back then :)
Thanks, my dad kept yelling at me to pump his gas, I had never done it before so I asked him to teach me and he just kept yelling. So I looked at your video and it helped a lot
Extra tips about cars and refueling : it doesn't always have the "fuel door" but the arrow is always there mostly to the side of the gas pump or the next to the F or E not all cars have a latch or a lever to open the gas cover you need to unlock your car using the lock button on the inside to unlock it or the key to unlock it , most cars get locked automatically after getting to a certain speed when driving if its off press and hold the lock button inside the car it should activate . if the fuel cap is not attached with something there is most likely a thing on the inside of the cover where you can hang it or put it . also he didn't explain why you would like to keep your tank filled up even he had half a tank , when your tank is half full or empty there is more air for fuel to evaporate with the heat it's even worse in the summer so you save gas like that !
my dad's around, but he hasn't taught me things like this at all. im learning to drive in 3 months, and i don't know where to start. im so glad your videos are around so i can learn about simple things without having to ask :)
Really interesting, I am a technician who installs Gas Pumps in germany and its interesting to see how much difference there is between us and german pumps. For example in germany you fill your tank first and pay after. And you have a nozzle for every sort of gas not just diesel and gasoline. A "normal" gas pump has 3-4 nozzles But it can have up to 5 nozzles.
Thank you so much for this. I still remember my Uncle leaving me unsupervised to fill his tank when I was 10. I ended up completely covered in petrol and haven't attempted it since
Don't forget that you should put the automatic flow on the lowest speed notch so that you aren't getting a lot of air. The slower speed is purported to give you more gas and less air. Great vid!
I'm lucky that I had my dad to show me how to pump gas when I first started driving. I haven't tried pushing the pump in like you showed, but I'll check next time. I was topping off the tank, though...ooops! Always learning something from you🙂Thanks, dad!

Let's take a moment to appreciate that he recorded the video very early in the morning, when fewer people would be at the gas station and there's a better chance he wouldn't hold up the pump while making the video. Very thoughtful and considerate.
Some points that are probably worth noting to a rookie gas pumper:
- avoid letting your car's gas tank level get below one-quarter full.
Thank you 🙏

Running the tank down was more a problem on metal fuel tanks, they are all plastic now. Replace your fuel filter every couple of years and you can run it onto the red just fine.

@@anderstermansen130 You are projecting to much huh
Been driving 14 years and I always hand squeeze at the pump because I wasn't taught there was a lever or how to hold it in place. By the time I realized there was, I was too embarrassed to even ask about it! This just gave me the confidence to try putting the lever in place for the first time. Thank you!
I squeezed also until my best friend laughed at me and showed me the lever 😄 before that I could never figure out why other people could release the nozzle but I had to hold it.
Also, for those that haven't pumped gas before, you can release the lever before it fills up and clicks if you need to stop the pump.
Haha I still always hold it and I’m 51😂😂😂
17 year old here, never really had a father figure in my life and all of your videos are incredibly helpful. Thank you for everything you do and just know that you help so many people.
*He's the Dad for everyone in UA-cam. We appreciate it so much 🙏 ❤️ *
Another tip is that when you unscrew the gas cap it fits perfect on the little door that covers it up. It help from keeping it hanging or if you don’t have the plastic strap still to it.
Gasoline drips can damage the car paint, as well.
I was super shocked the first time someone told me haha
im gonna start driving soon, and this in particular has given me a lot of anxiety, thanks so much x
I've never seen a nozzle with that spring-y/tube thing you have to *push* into the tank before! You learn something new every day.
So ... my mother came up here for a funeral about 10 yrs ago , without my father.
Yeah, my parents didn’t teach me. Lol I had to ask the person inside the store, who thank goodness was very helpful
First time I pumped gas my grandma just gave me her card and told me to go do it. Kinda scary
Where was this 5 years ago?! 🥺🥺 thank you for taking your time to do this, it is so necessary..
As someone who grew up in a state where someone pumps your gas for you this is actually very useful 😅
@@morgana235 my father is the same lol
no you pump it yourself bro.
@@anderstermansen130 what?
Wow! Kyle what state are you from!?
Thanks dad!
I'm 31 and I still have anxiety whenever I pump gas at my local Costco. 😭 Thank you dad!
Glad you’re here Larry 🙏🏻
My videos are for anyone and everyone that could use a little help 👍🏻
Lol
Oregon just changed to having to pump your own gas and I’m so thankful for this video
Thanks. Our customers need to see this video every day.
Thank you, you’re doing honorable work for all kids that grew up without Dads. I’m happy and grateful to have discovered your page!
So many people need this video along with "How to remove the pump before driving off" and "How to use turn signals"
This is such a helpful video!! Im quite an anxious person and this is explained well in such a nice manner ☺️
I didn't learn this til I was in my 40s. It only seems easy once you know.
I want you to know you brought this young man tears of joy in knowing that there’s SOMEONE out there finally being there for us… even if thru this media
Living in oregon I’ve never had to pump my own gas but am always terrified of the day I’m driving anywhere else and need to. Thank you for this video!
Charging an electric car for the first time, was again such a new experience that no-one thought needed explaining (in the end, it didn't, but still, nerve wracking for some people the first time)
Thanks, Dad! I've had driving anxiety all my life but recently started to drive.
Thanks Dad! It's illegal to pump gas in my state, so this is very useful for when we're driving out of state. 🙏🏻😎

Lots of people in Oregon flooding to these how to pump gas videos lol. Thanks for this vid! Super helpful! 😊
Thanks, what some would think “Duh, that’s obvious “ is Not obvious to some of us and I appreciate you taking the time to mention it. I’m an older adult and needed this.
I have been WAITING for this one bc I get so nervous over the worst things and anything to do with driving freaks me out, but this was v helpful, thank u so much for taking the time to explain !!
I know how to pump gas... I'm 34, but I still like to watch your videos... they're like a big hug.
I’m 29 and never pumped gas. I lost my license when I was 19 and just got it back. I feel like a teenager again but I am so grateful for this video because I was scared to ask someone for help. I am about to get a car in a few weeks. These videos are awesome!
i've lived in oregon my whole life and it's been illegal to pump your own gas here until very recently, so having a guide like this is great! thank you so much!
Thank you for this. It sounds like one of those simple, common sense things, but it can create a lot of anxiety for someone who's never done it before. I wish my parents taught me this when I was learning how to drive

seeing these make me so grateful i have a grandpa who is in my life a ton because he can teach me these things and basically decided to take the role of a father figure when my mom decided to have kids without a dad
wow, this couldn't come at a better time because I'm half way done with my motorcycle license and I'm always nervous going to the gas station.
Thanks
thank you for being my dad ❤

I want to tell you tht im in mid of my age and yr video helped me, in my back home country all the gas stations are NOT self serving and their staff Do this for ALL the cars and the driver Stays in the car and pay at the end! So it took me time to not be anxious abt filling my car😊thanks
Thank you so much! It really gives me anxiety cause i didn’t know how to do it! You are a real angel
Perfect timing I just got my first car thank you!!
Our gas station always pumped the gas, but they closed. Panic stricken, I finally had to pump gas myself! Most always a kind man next to me would offer to do it. My sister would roll her eyes. Thanks, Dad. You truly are appreciated. Happy New Year! 🙂
Thank you, Dad!
It's like you heard my need!!!
I traveled out of Jersey for the weekend and stood there looking at the pump hoping it would yield the answers lol
Thanks dad!

I'm glad you made this video! The first time I ever pumped gas, I had no idea what I was doing and it was a pretty embarrassing experience.
Thank you, dad! Will have to drive a rental car next week being in the US for the very first time. This has taken a lot of my anxiety!
Extra tips about cars and refueling : it doesn't always have the "fuel door" but the arrow is always there mostly to the side of the gas pump or the next to the F or E
not all cars have a latch or a lever to open the gas cover you need to unlock your car using the lock button on the inside to unlock it or the key to unlock it , most cars get locked automatically after getting to a certain speed when driving if its off press and hold the lock button inside the car it should activate .
if the fuel cap is not attached with something there is most likely a thing on the inside of the cover where you can hang it or put it .
also he didn't explain why you would like to keep your tank filled up even he had half a tank , when your tank is half full or empty there is more air for fuel to evaporate with the heat it's even worse in the summer so you save gas like that !
my dad's around, but he hasn't taught me things like this at all. im learning to drive in 3 months, and i don't know where to start. im so glad your videos are around so i can learn about simple things without having to ask :)
Really interesting, I am a technician who installs Gas Pumps in germany and its interesting to see how much difference there is between us and german pumps.
For example in germany you fill your tank first and pay after. And you have a nozzle for every sort of gas not just diesel and gasoline. A "normal" gas pump has 3-4 nozzles
But it can have up to 5 nozzles.
It shouldn’t be a problem on older cars to top them off. But it can cause issues on newer cars.
