My wife and I have matching his and hers 1978 superbe. (Canadian versions.) Completely original and I mean complete. Even the tires were original when I bought them. I've noticed some major differences here. Ours have a more rounded headlight, our fender profiles are not a squared on the top. Ours have front dynamo. Ours do not have the 360 deg chain guard. Ours do not have rod style breaks. Anyway just thought I'd share. I love our Raleighs.

Despite it's flaws, it is still a sweet bike !

I had a brand new Superbe in 1984 from Tom Crowther Cycles. At the time there was another Raleigh Roadster in the shop in black, single speed and 28" tyres with a bigger frame.

Back in the early fifties when I was at infants school in kent we had a police constable visit the school to give a talk and demonstration on the school playground about cycle safety and tips on riding etc. The bike he rode was a green upright with battery backup on the seat tube, could this I wonder have been a Raleigh Superbe? At the age of 75 the memory of that visit and of one tip in particular is still clear in my mind. It was, when breaking apply the front brake before the rear, which went completely against what we perceived to be common sense, we just wanted to skid.

Interesting Raleigh Superbe. Be interesting to discover its history. That is the later headlamp from 1979 on, together with the later faceted mudguards, not fitted til 1981. Yet the rest looks stock 1978. Obviously rebuilt at some stage, so someone put some effort into it.

It's an impressive machine. Too bad it isn't your size. A lot of my bikes are smaller framed but I enjoy them. My usual fitted size is 64.5 cm, or 25 inches. I ride 19 inch to 27 inch bikes in my collection.

I have an early 1970s Raleigh Superbe . all green step through . I love my bike . But I am having a bit of trouble with the Sturmey Archer 3 speed . It works fine in Third gear but second is not working and I must hold down the lever to get it into 1st gear . What would you suggest to do ? Adjusting it made it worse , it did not work in any gear . Was too tight. Does it need an overhaul ? Im looking to buy a Gazelle Populair tour . but its pricey . I live in Washington State . Close to Canada . If I sell the Raleigh , how much would a collector want for it . Its in wonderful shape ! beautiful bike . I would really hate to sell it , but I want the Gazelle too

You mention frame size (a bugbear of mine). I just wondered what height you are and what height a 21 frame would be suitable for?
Good vid though. Thanks for posting.

My bike is I think A 1974 -5 . It says suberbe on it . and its top quality . The chain guard is not completely enclosed on mine and the green color is a different green than this . Mine I think is an original .

I doubt this bike is from 1987 looking at the fenders, I think those are 80's. Still a great bike though.

That blue on the bell is oddly out of place, and not very Velocipedium :)

That was quickly attached to make it legal for the ride. Well spotted!

I bought a superbe in 1974 brand new from Angle Lake Cyclery . It was Super Deluxe . I lent it out to a friend of a friend . a big mistake . it was really beat up after a year of his abuse . I cant remember who ended up with it ? But we found the one on EBAY that I have now , And its almost identical to my new one had been . But its missing the back seat leather bag and the pump . and this one has the mattress seat . My original new Superbe had the beautiful brooks saddle .

Hi there, I recently acquired a 1979 Raleigh, not in the best of health but I’ve spent a few weeks doing her up and it’s an absolute joy now. My only issue is that everything about it suggests that it’s a Superbe but it has no lock on the front forks (it does have the little ‘don’t ride with the key in’ decal), can you help? did they ever make the Superbe without the fork lock around this time? It was my father-in-laws who had it for decades and as far as I’m aware the forks were never changed!
