Hats off to that gentleman (Mr Horn) , who kept his bike in tip top condition for 50 +years, keeping detailed records etc. That's a true enthusiast. What an incredible story . Thanks RD for showing us this bike & the different vintage parts it has.
Amazing to own a bike with such a detailed recorded history. I had a Sport in the late 1970's for my 12th birthday, and it got stolen when I was 28. Now, years later, I got rid of my ugly TREK e-bike and found a brand new looking 1984 Sport (without pump sadly). I'm so happy with this bike. Keep up with the nice videos, I love your talks.
Congratulations Arthur, on your Dawn Tourist. I have a 1955 Rudge Super Safety Tourist, in completely original condition, down to tyres and saddle. Also a catalogue marked on the appropriate page by the original owner, and the Raleigh Gradual Payments agreement. It to me is irreplaceable in its condition.
A great story especially when you mentioned Russels Bike Shop which is where I got my first bike a Christmas present in 1965 and that was a yellow Raliegh 5 speed racer. A gentleman I know in Alcuin avenue has a Raliegh Policemans bike with rod brakes in absolute mint condition he was a mechanic at Russels and loves his raliegh I wish i could remeber his name he was a yardman in the bus depot in James Street. Its good to see these lovely machines kept going.
When i ran BikeRescue, we had a pair of mint unused Superbes come in. About a third of all older Raleighs had Russels stickers on them. Andy started Cycle Heaven partly to catch the market for traditional bikes which was vacated when Russels closed. Then York grew the phenomenon of the “Gazelle Ladies”.
Great story of that bike. When you mentioned the dealer in York, it reminded me of two or three bikes I had from them. I had to replace the bike I rode to York from Northamptonshire, when I got a job in York. That bike was stolen from a pub in York, and I replaced it with something better. I also bought two bikes there, for me and my son. Pity that shop has gone though.
i also have a moulton (65 speed) as well as a early 80s chiltern and my wife and daughters have ladies raleigh cameo and a caprice liz pepperal love them to bits easy to maintain and own great video
Got Specialized road bike twice lighter then my Raleigh and I prefer the Raleigh.Got 4 of them 73 69 3 speed sprite and Highlander and my favorite 1978 Team Record.Needless to say I love steel bikes.Nothing wrong with Specialized but it lacks soul something hard to describe.

Just today i found a GEM♥️ 1951 auperbe e 98% original condition (thanks to a really nice bike lover friend ) in Sri Lanka. Still got all the components in it including original paint only the tyres has been change. Gonna restore it very soon. ♥️ love your video
I've just got my hand on a Raleigh sport. Sais 1953 (53)on the 3 speed Stermy archer rear hub. Going to restore it the best I can. Just rode it about 3 miles yesterday. Can feel the quality. Unfortunately my Brookes seat has gone past the point of repairing the leather. Everything is original though apart from the stand. It's had a paint job done on it but it's chipping away
Bonderizing is not the black finish you refer to. I worked at Raleigh and bonderising is a phosphorous coat and leaves a grey finish. The dipping is a different process where the frames were dipped in a large vat which was always referred to as ‘black rubber’.
Your every bike is superb one. I love your great affinity towards these marvellous old real English bikes. Do you overall three/four speed hubs? because that is only problem if anything goes wrong internally. I am from Pune India, there's hardly any mechanic left. therefore, it is difficult to run these bikes. I have got few English bikes , that's why I face this problem. You seem to have collected quite a number of bicycles.I admire your love towards these bikes because you ride these ones otherwise,I have seen many only collect these. ones. Riding these bikes gives us special pleasure, Thanks for sharing minute detail s and minute problems of these bicycles.
In many ways the 1930s-50s was the pinnacle of bicycle design. French Randonneur machines, Italian lightweights, and the global Roadster, all hit their high points, which have never been exceeded significantly enough to be called anything more than tweaks and marketing.
That's a beauty you got there. I have a 1951 Raleigh too, but its a rod cable bike. Perhaps you'd like to look at some of our bikes. Just go to my channel.

What a change to today’s ‘disposable’ bike culture. I hope you kept the logbook.
Thanks for posting.
So wonderful to have all the service records. What a treasure of a bicycle!
Sadly, Mr Horne’s family would not allow the log books to go.
@@Velocipedium That is a shame it be interesting to know how much is original what sort of life each part has? How hard has it worked flat or hilly?

I hope you chaps are in the Raleigh Roadster Club group (incorporating the Raleigh Superbe Owners Club).
I did not know of it's existence. Will make enquiries.
Facebook group. I founded it in Spring 2018

😆... Babies and their perfect timing.. I appreciate your vids
I remember the early Sturmey Archer cable runs and that little guide wheel under the saddle triggered a few memories
Wonderful video. Very interesting history of the bike.

Sounds like it doesn’t need restoration!

David, you probably have a lot of knowledge that we would find fascinating!
I have one my dad bought it when he was 13
do you want to borrow my Purdy, to sort out, your audio background problem :) lol
I wonder if it’s got its original bottom bracket? I just regressed mine.
Wonderful video and lovely bike. Any idea of what it would be worth in that condition?
Priceless. Other than that I don’t discuss money values.
A great bicycle!

I wonder how many miles she’s done in her life?
About 50,000
They haven't really got much better in 70 years.
