Nice to see you've got some time to yourself and in such beautiful weather. Personally, I don't like too much music in videos, natural sounds are quite enough. Also, lovely to see Sir Walter skating...
My Batavus Breukelen certainly is - I commute year-round in Ottawa, Canada. A studded front winter tire helps. However, my previous commuter, a Giant Cypress, was positively treacherous in the snow. Somewhat different geometry, I guess.
Studded tyres, the only sensible solution. The only problem is that for the most part we in the UK don't get enough snow for it to be worth it, it just doesn't stay around long enough. Now back in the 60's and 70's it was a slightly different matter.
Braver soul than me! Cycling and snow/ice are a definite no as far as I'm concerned. The snow is much deeper around my cycling parts of Calderdale and Bradford, much steeper as well. Finding a flat road is the needle in the haystack. Pity about the music, a very nice little intro, harmonised with the pedalling. That's very good on the weight loss and of course you are quite correct on the problem of the yo yo effect. Been there and done it many times. The problem? . . . . . those cakes and buns!
love the video! i feel like the footage will be much smoother and easier for you to record while cycling if you were to use a 360 camera thats attached to the handlebars
I hate those things. I’ve studied them and I’ve talked with other UA-camrs who have used them. The novelty is wearing off with most of the users. The amount of editing required is ridiculous. I also use phone only because of zero budget so any secondary inputs (except for the backup phone, from which I WhatsApp the B footage) are not possible. Sometime this year I will be upgrading everything, but until then, it’s old iPhones. As I say to people, I AM the gimbal!
Seems we share much the same philosophy when it comes to walking, riding and fettling. I am also caring for my mother which greatly limits the time I can spend riding and fettling. I am hoping to acquire an old Dunelt 3 speed roadster with rod brakes, full chain guard etc
@@Velocipedium I haven't done a 'diet' or calorie count for well over 2 years. They seldom work although there's always the odd few who manage to stay with it. I used to be 12 Kg overweight, now I'm 2 Kg overweight but I've been that weight for over 2 years - stable. I avoid ultra processed food and the rest is just sensible eating - nuts, vegetables, fruit and small amounts of meat. Basically home cooking, close to the med diet. I don't avoid potatoes or bread. I rarely eat store bought white bread though. I even have the odd cake but only after a bike ride - my treat and reward for the exercise I've just done. Of course there's many opinions on all of this but at the end of the day it has to be sustainable, the vast majority of diets and fads are not.
Great video :) when yiou laced in your drums to your rims, how do you know, which length spokes to use? and what about spoke diameter and nipples please?
@@Velocipedium aaah ok, never laced one before, i was wondering how you calculated the different length spokes for the flanges, obviously shorter on the drum size... i thought there no way he sat down and shortened each spoke by hand, cut n tapped them :) lol
I know your time is valuable so to take time out to do a video we are more than grateful and what a day to go out but all the better to see you and the superbe. Enjoyed the video and thank you that ride out in Stanley park will charge your batteries slightly.

Brave man riding one handed in such icy conditions. Cold but beautiful weather.

This inspired me for a morning ride on the 82 Motobecane Grand Jubile along the irrigation canal path here in Yuma Arizona! Thank you for the lift!
Sounds great!
Always something to fix & now the car. C'est la vie!
What a great melancholy intro Rowan. You’ve had some tasteful musical bits in the past. More of same please😊.
Great adventurous ride, sunshine, frozen lake, wild life , lovely intro music. Totally uplifting to view. Great
That’s the bit of music that cost me any income from the video (see description).. Bloomin UA-cam!
I love riding my Raleigh in winter, but I do it in Florida!!!😅
Beautiful video!!
Snow, or crispy frozen snow is more grippy than you'd think, but I'll only ride on it off-road paths/ trails......Ice is another matter though.

Yes I wouldn’t be riding in the Dales just now. Downhill is the killer!
Mmmm cakes….

I have found the Keto Diet beneficial.
It’s basically my next step when the loss from dropping the sugar levels off. Then it’s out with the carbs to lose the rest.

I use an online spoke length calculator. I use the same spokes.
