It's amazing that this car is 20 years old. It just doesn't look 20 years old. It could sit quite happily amongst new cars and would not look out of place. I passed my driving test in 1984. Back in those days a 20 year old car might have been a Vauxhall Cresta which looked positively ancient parked next to a Ford Sierra!
True however cars really do look all the same today and haven't changed style wise since early 2000s. The early 70s Vauxhall Cresta would look great now sat next to today's 'blow moulded' cars with its great metal chrome bumpers, mechanical AC Gauges and straight bodywork lines.
I'd have an early 70's Cresta now, especially the 3.3ltr with the straight-six engine! My old man had one, around '74, & compared to a lot of 'ordinary' cars, it really stood out, plus of course, it went like a stabbed rat, once out on the open road!!
My wife has a 2004 Cooper. It's a really good spec with chilli pack leather and the sunroof etc. I'm really OCD with my cars, my wife is not. This Mini gets washed once a year when it rains. Last year it passed it's MOT with no advisories, it's an amazing car. My 2007 Alpina D3 E90 on the other hand is a pampered low mileage car. Mine spends most of its time in the garage wiping out my savings. The Mini on the other hand keeps going and going. It's bloody unfair 😂
@@ln5747 The Peugeot made engines (1.6 Turbo) found in the 2008-2013 Copper S, JCW and JCW GP are crap. Also people who own those tend to race everywhere, not wait for the oil to warm up, etc... the 115-120hp NA old Cooper is fine. Minis made after 2014 have reliable engines too. I had 2 of these at similar year within 6 months. One had a burned exhaust valve and a bad misfire because of it. The other overheated, rocker cover leaked, clutch release bearing noisey and needed a coil pack. These engines are also pricey to have fixed. Clutch is about a grand because of the limited space. Thanks, yes it is a 20 year old banger, but all credit to BMW, it still works. All my early years driving were old bangers, which were only 10 years old, but that was all I could afford, cars in the 60s rarely lasted much longer than 10 years, engines were rebuilt after 40-50,000 miles, but they taught me how to fix them.
I have had a few Mini's and have always found them to be very reliable; if I am honest I'd get the dent fixed and sell between £1200-£1400 as it'll be a great local runner for someone and the Mini One can be remapped to match the Cooper of the same Generation; then they can go with Mini Styling like most do.
I used to dislike BMW Minis until I was offered one for the same price as this one. I've since been converted. It's like an old school hatch of years ago, fun to drive, handles well and not enough power to get you into trouble. I can still work on it myself, parts are reasonable and it still looks modern. We've even added another to the family.

£995 (and no offers) is the right price. It just looks and sounds right, 'priced to sell m8'. The Tritec engines on the R50 Mini were good. The odd head gasket but waaaay better than the Peugeot/BMW 'Prince' abortion in the R56 with its oil leaks and timing chain issues.
Growing up our neighbor that was a railroad engineer had a late 60’s Mini, in Southern West Virginia it was like an owning a spaceship, nobody had any ideal what it was. My dad made a lot of snarky comments about his toy car, then my dad went for a ride in it and for years he talked about how roomy the little Britt was compared to his Ford Cobra Jet 429 Torino and speculated our neighbor was getting 109 mpg 🤣😂🤣😂, I’m not crazy about these Mini’s, they do look good, but a far cry from the originals!
I had a slightly older (2002) Cooper - that had "oil leak" mentioned on most of the MOTs, but the oil level never really changed. So it was leaking from a break in the fabric of space time (the oily dimension?). I do miss it - great fun to drive, more practical than I ever expected, but I needed four decent seats. That's a cracking car - it is rare to find one of those fully working without any major problems.
My neighbours daughter loved these. They always had the flag on the roof. He got her the first one back in mid to late 00's. They would always fall apart in 3 years max. Interior would break, rust, engine and gearbox problems, faiding color it had it all. She got through a couple of them but nowadays drives a Smart. Not gonna lie when supercharged they're still cool.
@@LOTPOR0402 The early ones were good 👍 it's the ones made after 2007 that are bad but only mainly the Turbo version or Automatics as I test drive a Countryman Automatic nice car but the gearbox was awful , sadly for me I bought a Fiat 500 🤣 even bloody worse as I've spent £1000 on repairs after 2 months and paid £3 grand for it
I had an 03 Cooper (Chilli pack, natch), and it indeed had a sloshing sound when it moved. Turned out to be water ingress above the headlining that conveniently drained via the rear view mirror when braking. I still loved that car though…
I've got one, an 04 mini cooper s r53, just gone through 100k miles and it drives amazing! No way would you think that it's 20 years old, but believe it or not it's got an oil leak, rear washer blocked and remote locking not working!
"...[P]uddle at a petrol station" is an almost poetic description and immediately conjured up a vivid but slightly unpleasant experience. Very nicely put.
Rishi also now owns my neighbours offensive Qashqui, Keir has a truck in the village car park that has 'Police Aware' on the windscreen and Caroline Lucas owns your L405!!
Matt , i'm big fan , and for the price of the mini it is fair to say with the remaining months of MOT , damage and the good condition of the car , price will be fairly 975 or 1095 pounds ( i'm from Bulgaria , and here the prices are crazy even for normal mini )
Do you remember when a classic car used to be anything 20 years old, now it's 40 years, shows how much cars have improved. I would say around £1200 is a fair price as it's not just the car you have to pay for but the your whole business, forecourt, monster fuel bills and all those sandwiches.. 😉
I always like the format where you just dont know what to expect and then after a good clean it looks great, sort of when you go to sell your own car and you spruce it up after neglect. 1299 I would say because it looks fine.
I bought one, also 2004, a year and a half ago. Don't ask me why. Long story. A friend was de-emigrating (going back to his home country - I live in a hot climate, having lived for most of my life in the UK). Asked me to sell it for him. He was talking of scrapping it. Ended up buying it off him. Yes, several things wrong with it and cost me a few hundred euros to remedy them. Some things still aren't fixed (no A/C; no radio; power steering leaks, slowly), but, you know what, I really like the old beast. Has character. Not stupidly complicated. No rust. Good paint. Nice interior. Handles like a go kart. Best bit, British-made!
@@markdowling5962 I think you may be missing the point. Yes, the car has been far from perfect. But I've been happy with it, because it has character, and because it's British. I don't want some cheap Chinese machine that performs better. My Mini does a reasonable job, was made by British workers, and that's absolutely fine by me.

For some people a car is just a thing to get from A to B and back plus maintain when required to by the owners manual. So a dirty car as long as it has been maintained shouldn’t be moaned at.
When I worked at a main dealer back in the day, part exchange cars that looked awful usually drove brilliantly. And cars that looked amazing, often drove appallingly. You can't have it both ways apparently.
These don't have the timing chain issue, that applies to 2nd Gen Minis. But these do suffer from oil leaks, usually nothinf that cannot be sorted though
Yes, as others have said, charity shops for CDs. They have a good range of show tunes and Alfie Boe CDs 😂 Or I could lend you some but my CD collection is about 10-20 years old...
I guess just this first one the whole headlight goes with the bonnet. The later ones the clamshell goes up with the 2 holes, but the lights stay down.. probably due to regulations also, to put the lights in a fixed position

I had an '04 Mini Cooper a few years ago and I *really* wanted to love it - it had so much character, the interior was lovely and the seats/driving position were perfect! But it was so sluggish to drive and it went through oil like it was going out of fashion. Maybe I was comparing it unfairly to the 2.0 Fiesta ST I had before it (which got written off after a couple of people drove into the back of it 🙄) but it just wasn't as fun as I'd hoped it would be. Maybe I should have got a Cooper S? 🤔 Lovely looking cars, though! ❤

The R50, including the ONE, is a genuine proper future classic. More and more people are appreciating these now, compared to the later models.
The Supercharged ones were made in South Africa if i remember right and a lot more reliable than the newer ones with the Turbo engines
Asolute bull .A lot of these cats are still going strong today A smart car is a toy joke compared to even a gen 1 mini one
@@LOTPOR0402 The early ones were good 👍 it's the ones made after 2007 that are bad but only mainly the Turbo version or Automatics as I test drive a Countryman Automatic nice car but the gearbox was awful , sadly for me I bought a Fiat 500 🤣 even bloody worse as I've spent £1000 on repairs after 2 months and paid £3 grand for it
@christineayres7199 Like I said gen 2
@@LOTPOR0402 Ah ok 👍😁
I had an 03 Cooper (Chilli pack, natch), and it indeed had a sloshing sound when it moved. Turned out to be water ingress above the headlining that conveniently drained via the rear view mirror when braking. I still loved that car though…
I've got one, an 04 mini cooper s r53, just gone through 100k miles and it drives amazing! No way would you think that it's 20 years old, but believe it or not it's got an oil leak, rear washer blocked and remote locking not working!
Were decent engines pre-2006 👍
I've got a 2012 Cooper. Such fun to drive
"...[P]uddle at a petrol station" is an almost poetic description and immediately conjured up a vivid but slightly unpleasant experience. Very nicely put.
'rectified fault in washer jets' meaning poked a needle down them 😂😂
or stuck an air line down the tube lol
The first tire is actualy a decent one. Its a FULDA KRISTAL MONTERO. German brand . Good winter tires
All I can hear is a whine from the Drivers seat 😲😲😂😂
Can we meet your mechanic one day, it'd be hilarious to see what she's got to say about all the wrecks you ask her to fix!
You are right, that was a long story.
And the worst POS excuse for a car ever made 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇬🇧🇮🇪
@@markdowling5962 I think you may be missing the point. Yes, the car has been far from perfect. But I've been happy with it, because it has character, and because it's British. I don't want some cheap Chinese machine that performs better. My Mini does a reasonable job, was made by British workers, and that's absolutely fine by me.
i enjoy these cheap car vids, as i just got my first car for a bargain of £400 not a bad price for it too!!. Mk5 Astra SXI 1.4 5 door, great car and good on fuel too only thing it needed was a wash and brakes and was back on the road. only bad thing about it is the insurance is steep for being 18y old. im paying 275 a month with a blackbox.
I'm sure I saw mini "cabrio" on your car vertical check?
Hello Matt, to start, I couldn't help it, but Rowan Atkinson came to mind :) (his current daily is an Audi as far as I know!) The previous owner probably had a great disliking for car wash places! I think the car would be a very economical and fun way to get around for someone, especially at 1,295 B.P. (I'm glad that you're driving and enjoying your SLK!)
My dad has got a mini and whilst I don’t really like driving it, it just goes on and on. Every MOT they say it won’t pass next year, but without any major work it always does and they say the same again. Few little issues but has never let him down.
£15 for a mini Valet sounds very v good value. I bet you are their best customer! Always look forward to your videos. One day is the lovely Boxter next day in an 04 mini! Topsy turvy world of motor trading:)
The Kristal tyre is a winter one, and will definitely be a part worn.
The others are budget brand tyres
Matt, that fear tyre, Kristall Montero is actualy a Fulda brand!A decent winter tyre 🤗
so true. He thought it was chinese crap as usual in his videos. As I remember it was produced around 2015 so it's really old.
could you make a video from the car wash people? what they do, and how?
Amazing , I watched 1 of these a couple of days ago and the top comment was "why do a car vertical ad after you have bought a car blind " this one starts with
" should have done this earlier really "
I'd pay about £1200 if it drives as well as you say.
Remember when the top gear lads did that race around a farmyard. Scrapper racing. Come on Matt you know you want to!
My mk2 superb also has a cd player. To to charity shops for CDs. 10 for a quid and there's some gold there.
Nothing like a car that's been used as a mobile 'buffet'. A veritable smorgasbord with a lindt dor wrapper and a bakewell tart case.
Get yourself an FM bluetooth transmitter for the SL, saviour when you want to keep the original stereo. They do the job.
Another car saved matt nice one and will sell at £1295 look forward to the next video 👍
Nice video Matt. GBP 1295 all day long for the mini, eBay for music CDs for your Merc.
These don't have the timing chain issue, that applies to 2nd Gen Minis. But these do suffer from oil leaks, usually nothinf that cannot be sorted though
Thanks Matt. I need a video like this after a long stressful day to unwind to. Always entertaining buddy 👌👏🙏
We’ve got a 56 plate cooper. I love how it drives. Hate how it’s always needing work………apparently that’s not uncommon!
Got to be £1,295 retail even if it is 20 years old. It’s a great first car for someone
Love a first gen R50/53 Mini. Lots of smiles from my 2002 Cooper S JCW with 200hp 😛
Best car channel on youtube , hands down
Yes, as others have said, charity shops for CDs. They have a good range of show tunes and Alfie Boe CDs 😂
Or I could lend you some but my CD collection is about 10-20 years old...
I guess just this first one the whole headlight goes with the bonnet. The later ones the clamshell goes up with the 2 holes, but the lights stay down.. probably due to regulations also, to put the lights in a fixed position
Hi matt love your videos.some of the cars you right off I would love. As living in East London the chances of being written off by a prius or a police chase is so high a few blemishes really doesn't matter
perfect student car
bought my son one for his uni days
kids love them in black
easy to sell
watch the water pump & radiator
easy to rack up another 300 quid in service & repairs
good luck with that
Saab specialist
blind dog specialist ??
I'm pretty certain a friend of mine was working on the production line back then and would have helped build that car.
She's an industrial anthropologist - her time there was part of her PhD
Great video, good little car. I was going to say £1195 but several others beat me to it.
A gestoria is a business manager not a lawyer. You can do car transfers at the police station and it is significantly cheaper than using a Gestor. You need to have your NIE to buy or sell a vehicle too. I always find it amazing that people in the uk Buy Spanish regiserted vehicles here, and we know they are in deep poop when they try and take it to spain. (Had spanish residencia since 200, don't live in Spain anymore and the corruption and Bureaucracy is just mind boggling.)
Hey can you start testing the indicators before you set off and can you check the interior lights
Dip the oil too.
He probably does but it’s not worth showing 😂
Tritec are actually pretty decent engines. Very simple single cam engines Timing chains were never a huge problem and being a non interference engine even better
I used to work at a garage taking cars for an mot the owner of the mot station said he loves minis because they make him loads of money because they are always breaking down, ever week there was two minis with there engines out they are rubbish.
Very lucky with those engines and no rust should have a few more years left in it lets hope the new owner cleans the inside out every week
look the part mat lots of parts available classic mini maybe...
My friend had a cooper s back in the day. It was one of the early supercharged ones. It was an absolute riot to drive but i couldn't have put up with the bone shaking ride that it had on a daily basis!
Another good, honest review, Matt. Thanks
11:25 *I Was once some years ago trying to drive to Oldham and got a bit lost on the A6 (Pre Sat-Nav) and asked a Local which way please - he answered Best One in Each Hand Mate !*
i got a 207 1.4 vti same engine as mini and the person that was selling clearly knew how to hide a fault because i decided to do a full service, when i dropped the gear oil only 1lt was init and soon as i put 2lt oil in now has gearbox whine noise when slowing down under 2000rpm so private seller was hiding a major fault but lucky its still going done 20,000 miles a year but soon as it fail i not going to bother getting it replaced as i been quoted £800 for recon gearbox with new clutch.
That will be a fantastic first car for someone - better than the ropey Renault 5 I started out with!
Advertise for £1295, take £1200. With a fresh MOT, that is £100 a month over the 12 months. That is a cheap motor for someone and it will probably still hold £300 value at the end.
Those tire-names are so fascinating. Like exotic cocktails. Or porn starts. "Ah, a Christel Montaro".
About as grippy as the rubber porn stars use too.
*Don't Mention **-Stormy-** Paul Daniels the Magician !*
I like to think that the Chinese deliberately give these ironic names. _"Real name Deathmaster Ultragrease 2000, we call it Star Performer for silly Europeans"_
it's a Fulda KRISTALL MONTERO 3 a decent German brand. As I remember it was produced in 2015 so its really old. However, it's not this chinese crap as usual in his videos
@@dawidskrzypczak7735 Indeed Fulda is very good.
I’m learning the different tyre makes never heard of from your videos
Only thing I would of done differently is replaced the mini badges as they looked worn! dont ever wear the same t-shirt in the before and after as well haha that caught me out.
Loved the video “ great little mini ‘ if I was a young guy I’d pay £1,300 great first car 🚗 good one Matt “ happy days 👍
I had an '07 Mini Cooper a few years ago.
Didn't keep it very long as it went through oil almost as quickly as it went through fuel!
