Today I got some scrap material and decided to build a rocket stove to use when I go camping at the ranch. This is a very basic but efficient rocket stove. I had seen these years ago and finally built my own. Rocket stoves use small fires made from twigs and all the heat goes up directly to the stove top. You can cook, boil water or even use to provide some heat.
At the end of the day I enjoyed the build.

Love the idea for the Handle as well as the over all design!! though would have added a flume or choke to backside yo control air flow and temp
Thanks for the suggestions. This was the first one I made and mostly from scrap materials. I have one made from 6x6 square tubing that I want to try cooking on next week. I just finished a grill today so that I can test it actually.

Before I forget at 6:04 you can see the small offset smoker I was building its behind the 20" round pipe grill. Its made from 3/8" wall pipe.
At 4:20 you can see the 20" x 12" pipe for my fire pit/grill that I wanted to build and its in progress I guess lol.
The Rocket Stove came out great after years of wanting to build one. I am officially out of scrap metal so that makes August a tough month with slim to none builds. I need to find some material now.

AWESOME! How could I make a stove that allowed me to got the coals so I can use them in my smoker?
How long can you make the chimney? Would like to use it as a compact stove for heating without all the heat going out the roof. Can it be used with a 4m long zig zag chimney? 4m just as an example.

I haven't made much due to prices of steel. The shipping would also be expensive so I haven't put much time in trying to sell. I will be making another one soon.

Looks almost identical to the design I use. Works pretty good. Does produce a lot of carbon which covers
the bottom of pans. I need to add a small battery operated fan to mine to get it to burn hotter, hopefully that will reduce the soot.
I think if you add the fan it will make the rocket stove hotter for sure. I was going to use round material but found the square tubing which did the job. I bought the small skillet for it but haven't cooked a steak on it. I use it mostly for boiling water to make coffee. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.
Seconding having a fan around but not just for aiding your stove, they're absolute game-changers for starting & maintaining a fire under *any* conditions so long as you have a quality fan suited for the job. I use small-ish blower fans (i.e. Biscuit fans) that are considered huge for their intended use in cooling pcs & can move a crazy amount of air for their size. Got a few delta 2.6 amp ones for a great deal that could easily put a breeze into a large room that arent much bigger than my palm that I've used to stoke kindling into an inferno bonfire practically within seconds. Good times
A forge blower hand cranked is what you need, that’d work so nicely.
Old boy scout trick is to put a generous amount of liquid dish soap on the bottom of the pan before you put it on the stove, the soap will dry and crust on the bottom and when you go to wash it, it just falls right off.
Cover the bottom of your pot with soap, and the black will come off easily when you wash it!
An “old Indian trick”!
Hi, what is the cross section of the material used? I have some 100x100x3 mm lying around, it will probably work.
Its 4" x .125" wall so 100mm x 100mm x 3mm sounds about right.

I did a video on the one I made, not really used it too much yet . I put a baffle in mine like you did, not sure if that was the right thing to do yet or not. Turned out nicely though !
Thanks. There is many designs out there and actually several years past before I actually built it. It works great with twigs but when I added split hardwood it produced heat but not as much as thinner branches/twigs. I wanted to buy a small griddle to try cooking some breakfast on it. I just love the way food taste when cooked with wood.
@@cutweldngrind Yes, I love cooking stuff over wood. You might be on to something as I did the same thing split up some hardwood and did not get as much heat as I thought I would. Maybe they run better on twigs, have to try that.
I really would like to see how you welded the top of the 45* next to the upright. Looks like that might be hard to do with a mig welder. The shielding cup would interfere. Let me know, please.
I can't recall but I did remove the shielding cup as I am still running flux wire. I had to watch video as I cant remember lol.

How long was the hole you cut where the 45 welds up?
I am not sure of the size I cut out but I drew lines where the middle piece meets the vertical and horizontal piece. I then cut maybe 1/4" inch inside of those marks as to leave little edge for wood to get stuck.

I have a few Dewalt grinders in 4.5": 6.5A, 7A, 7.5A, and 10A. I use the 7 and 7.5 amps ones in most of my videos. The ones I will give away are the 7.5A paddle style which are still in the box. I was so anxious to use this Rocket stove and it had just rained that morning. I think the "Mesquite" thicker hard wood kept burning slowly but the branches actually gave that rocket effect. Thinner material just released heat faster and I really liked the way it performed. I will build a cooking grate for it soon then try some food on it.
@@cutweldngrind nice, I've been wanting a dewalt grinder for a while now... I have the HF Chicago grinder but those run on brushes and don't last long... I believe the dewalts are brushless and 1000 times better....lol. Looking forward on your next build/project....👍
@@BigLou956 I ordered 20 flap disc online in 4 1/2 inch but I also wanted a bigger 6 or 7 inch grinder. I had an old Makita 7" but cant find it anywhere. I sometimes would find deals at pawn shops but lately there is just junk. I have a few other videos to upload but they are not builds and some are reviews or modifications. Well I need to find some metal.

I've never seen one of those over here, might have a go at making one to see how they run. Ive only got 4 inch round in the shed but I spose it would work the same.
I put some tags on my Vidio as you said to see what happens, I'm not sure there is any difference. My test run tags included " worlds best, free stuff, how to get rich fast, " and a few other waky ideas 😁👍.
I actually have some round pipe but I know I will have a hard time coping or notching the pipe for that 45 degree angle. The pipe I have is also very heavy wall some is 1/4" and other about 3/8". Try putting tags like these on one of the tracked vehicle videos if they match your video: remote controlled tracked vehicle, remote controlled tracked vehicle with camera, diy remote control robot, How to build a tracked robot, rc track robot, diy rc tracked vehicle, rc tank track, rc track vehicle. You can also add smaller 1 or 2 word tags if wanted. The better the tags or ranking of them the higher up they appear in the youtube search pages. I actually stayed up last light making my video have a better SEO score, search engine optimization. I started as a hobby about 6 years ago and now I see a little $ flowing in but its not much. I learned so much from the few video I have seen from you. I need more tools and also an excavator. Well I have reached the bottom of the scrap pile and not sure if to start building stuff from mud now. I see a trip to scrap yard soon.

I been wearing slip on steel toe boots for about 20 years and finally moved to lace up. Here in south Texas there is a ton of stickers so the laces just catches every sticker possible. The good thing is I don't do concrete work and they last longer now. What size boots you wear?
@@cutweldngrind I tend to work on my knees down on the slab when doing larger welding products -as I crawl around it seems I drag the toe of my left boot -I build it back up with some JB liquid metal -sand it -quick shot of flex seal and good as new for a week🤣

I tried the rocket stove this morning but most of the wood was wet after another storm. It works great with dry twigs as I tried it again and you can feel the heat it puts out. I made some coffee and will work great for cooking off grid. Hope you enjoy. Comment, share and subscribe.
Can be made with a bigger square tubing like 6 inches?
I have seen 6 and 8 inch square tubing ones on Facebook market but I have not attempted one. I have to build another using 4" square tubing but will try a diffrent design.

I have always used 4" which is close to 100mm. There is a few videos online of others using smaller material like you mentioned.
Whats the ideal height for rocket stove? Is shorter the better? Or heighier one is the better? Tia..
I have not done much testing as this was the first 1 I built. I used some measurements found online. My neighbor has one the same height but he used a smaller tube diameter. I believe the taller the stove the least efficient it is.
You think a cheap harbor freight welder can do this job? I’m a weekend warrior and want to make my own because I’m getting charged 500+ for a rocket stove
I have a HF 90A Flux welder and have done decent welds. I am not sure if you plan to use a stick welder but they seem to be affordable and compact. Arccaptain has the ARC160 and that stick welder works great with 7018 and 6013 electrodes.
I’m planning on getting the easy flux welder from HF. The wife is letting me purchase the tool if I can do the job lol. I got a bunch of scrap metal that I can use to complete this job, all I am missing is the knowledge and the welder. But I’ll have to look into those stick welders you mentioned.
@@andrewtrejo4442 Have you seen the diamond plate one I did, that requires more welds but I had lots of scrap. What will you use to cut, bandsaw, grinder, plasma cutter. The 125 was a cool welder I got to use, I still have the Titanium 145. If you need any help let me know.
@@cutweldngrind Hello, yeah I just seen it and the rocket stove looks very unique from what I’ve been seeing. It honestly looks more intimidating having to construct the square pipe by yourself. I’m going to use a grinder to cut my metal. I know it’s going to take forever and I’m going to have to grind the edges to make things flush. I have 1/8 inch metals scraps and 6 inch square pipes to make my stove. It’s going to be a process but I’m here for it.

Where did you get the handle on the back?
I got it from Laredo Discount Metals a store in the city. I am not sure if they could be found on ebay or amazon. I don't own a torch so this was a perfect item to buy at an affordable price. I might build another rocket stove soon a bit bigger than this one.

Thanks for the comment. These are used mostly by people living off grid to heat water or cook with little fire wood. You burn thin pieces of wood and get high heat as long as the fire is burning strong. If the fire is low it looses efficency. I use this to make coffee off grid and a few twigs can boil water quickly.
Hello what's the total length of square hollow tubing we need for this project? Is 3ft sufficient?
On the long piece I went 19" and the small piece was 12" on the longer side. I dont remember the angle on the cut but the short piece top side is 8.5 and again long piece is 12. I just drew a line and cut it off.
Yes, 3 ft will be enough.
I'm not sure that it's a "rocket" stove. The air intake is too small and we don't hear the sound of the rocket and the flamme is not powerfull.

Subscribe to the channel if you haven't and let me start drawing up a better design. I will make it 6x6 tubing and make it spit fire 5 feet in the air. I plan on starting the build next week as my other PC used for CNC fried today. Thanks bud.

Looks like it didn’t get that hot, you prob should have not messed with the air flow and cut out the back
The stove works great but I realized I was using thicker pieces of hard wood and the flame would not burn to hot. I tried it with twigs and you can see the flame and feel the heat it puts out. I have another design on my channel feel free to check it out.
To cook them tortolitas I hear in the background on that rocket stove
I have to make another rocket stove but these work great for heating. I can add a bigger skillet on top and cook some Flour Tortillas or Corn tortillas. I need to get back to my projects as I have been slacking lately.

Very nice Jorge!!! I have a technical question: Why didn't you use the Dewalt cut off saw for the rest of the straight cuts you needed instead of the portable bandsaw and grinder.
I'm not sure at the moment why I went that route. Maybe the diagonal cut exceeded the cutting capability on the chop saw. I usually use a plasma cutter on my projects so maybe I just wanted to try other tools but a chop saw would probably give me straighter cuts. Did you build one or planning to build one?

I need to look that up as I am not sure what the Air Box is. I do plan building another bigger version so will look into that.

I am thinking on building another rocket stove next week using 6x6 steel versus the 4x4 tube. I also plan on making it look nicer than my scrap build ones.

I didn't run a long test as I needed hot water for coffee and not boiling. I can make a video if needed on boiling water.

You’re not even close to off grid, since you’re using electricity for your welder. Not even close.
I'm not off grid just trying to say this would work out good to take to an off grid location. I also have electricity off grid by using my 3kw solar system which can power a welder if needed for short amounts of time. I also have running water from a water well that runs directly off solar panels. I prefer to be on grid as things are easier.

Cut out loud and corny music. Also and very important: when Fixing a door with 3 hinges, showing how to fix the first and last screws is enough. We definitely do not want to see12 holes being drilled and 12 screws being tightened. These shows are for professionals and not morons.
