Wow. Making me one . Also on rough ground sticks could be put into tubing legs for more stability using bigger pot or frying pan. This is great just found this. An 83 year old camper.
Practice your welding, Ed. A little leading angle will flatten out your beads, which will eliminate some of your grinding, and you'll have less melt through, like on your outside corner. I'm not an expert, its just what I do for a living.
I do have some 2" steel laying around, Now you have thinking of another stove idea, I have 2 other stove ideas already, I need to stop thinking or the channel will turn into a rocket stove showcase:) Thanks for watching ED
This is a nice looking stove. One important suggestion, It looks like it will tip forward due to the front foot being set back. I would suggest adding another pice of the same 1x1 stock to form a “T” with the front foot. Have it stick out 3-4” towards the front.
I think an expanded metal/grill option or even a large griddle so you can take advantage of different temps to cook on would be cool to see. great job!
I've been wanting to make a rocket stove for the family and been researching many designs. Your's looks simple and effective. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks.
REALLY like this idea. wish i could use one. not a good idea to paint before removing rust.. it may cover the rusting but it does not remove the problem. rust has a tendency to cut through paint. need to do a rust remover then paint to protect from future rust. heat resistant paint is best here.

I see just 1 improvement you can make to this design and that is to add on 2 additional stabilization legs on the opposite end of the cooking platform in the and in the opposite direction for stability to prevent tipping in case a pot of water is heavy or there is a bump. this would pretty much prevent any chance of tipping over.
great easy to make imm going to build 1 tommorow and ill put a length against its back close it up and weld to chimley put pipe conection on back side off it top and bottom so can heat say a 40 liter container offf water for hot water for washing up and showers so have free cooling cost and hot water very cheep to build and could have 3 orr more to do all our cooking on
I really like this design Ed because it orients the fuel feeding chamber and the air intake in the same direction. I want to make one as an emergency device in case things go TU so I can actually cook in my fireplace if needed. The only feature I'm thinking about adding is a shelf on the back where I can place a heat powered stove fan to blow the heat back into the room. I also appreciate the way you oriented the cooking grate because you could easily slide an extension piece in there for a taller flu if desired. Thanks for making this video brother.

I have watched quite a few of these build your own Rocket stove videos. Your design is one of the better omes around. Sure you can add air control flaps, and get even more creative, next build.. But this video is very helpful. Thanks

Your welding is just fine! Flaps for air control do work but are not required. Sometimes just making sure to get the draft going good before packing fuel in works.
Thanks for the comment, I think a flap over the fuel infeed tube would help with the drawer as the air would only have the bottom tube to go through. I suppose with or without each have their own pros and cons. Thanks for watching, ED

It's a great idea if he controls the flow of air that goes into it with a controllable vent it could use the air to regulate the heat control the burn control the heat and get much more out of his fuel I would definitely have one of those
I think i should have put a little door on the fuel infeed to make the air flow thought just the bottom tube instead of both the fuel infeed tube and the air infeed tube. In theory it should make it draw better aswell. Thanks for watching, ED

Good video, good stove but one suggestion from a guy who welds quite a bit. The only thing more annoying than running a grinder is listening/watching someone else endlessly running a grinder... Edit that stuff out! :)
This was my first video and I realised afterwards that I could have cut a lot of it out. In some of my other video i have tried to cut out the grinder but also try to keep as many steps in the video without missing bits out(if that makes sense) THanks for watching, ED
Hello! What is the idea behind the angled pipe? Is it for better air intake - won't the flames go out through this angled pipe? Or perhaps is it for unattended wood feed :) ?
John Arizona agreed. I've made a few of these. If you put an adjustable flap over the air intake too, you can control the output temperature also. Brilliant bit of kit and you've done a great job on this build.
@@ralpherizonie1785 John Arizona and The Backyard Welder contributed to this conversation and the build. You contributed nothing except a sour attitude.
Cool build I'm thinking for anything but boiling water you would do well using a double boiler type rig on top so it's steam heating the cooking surface not open flame I think it would provide a much more even heating surface. Good use of rusty Square stock either way.

I was going to suggest a flap over the wood input pipe to create more of a draught but you appear to have already figured that out 😂😂 very nice design. I would like to see a bigger version to be honest. Something to keep warm by at parties haha!!
Ed Makes Stuff you can never go too big. I suggest a 20 inch by 20 inch length of box section 😂😂😂 and i no longer drink on account of making stupid suggestions like build bigger fires lmfao
Nice job. From what I see you won't have any problems with the steel getting too hot and melting running it this way. And yes, a damper of some kind would give you heat control. The only thing I can see is it would be top heavy if you had too much weight sitting on top of it. (Try it on uneven ground with a heavy pot of water... that'll help your footprint design on any newer models). Awesome job.
Can I ask why did you choose this particular design Vs feeding the wood to the fire at the base itself and use the vortex to cook rather than the fire itself, as the temperature of the fire is lower than the heat generated, which ultimately is what is needed to cook??? Thanks!
I made one of these but a bit differently. Works just the same. I’m curious as to why it was painted though? After a good use or two really that paint would come off, and smell awful at that.
