- Let's start studying Russian verbs - the way they change their forms in different tenses and some prculiarities they have in meaning and in using. Today we'll take a look at "говорить", and the way it is different from other similar verbs.

Many lessons of "Word for Word" translations do not teach how to construct sentences properly as a native speaker does and explaining what is incorrect to say is very important and helpful. I like the mixture of different Levels of difficulties and the good Ratio of English and Russian. I once listend to Putin Holding a speach in German. Thank to your "live longer" I now better understand Putin saying somehtin like "after all this sweet talk" - which is deutsch=German=doce(italiean)=Toll/schöen(German4veryNice)and even "go on", we must - so some superpowerful, and maybe "trite". Which reminds me of "Overall" - you said that with an "interesting " Accent - "Overall - Russians seem all to be eating kernels... an American maintained -- also: the tip with the finger to the chin is very helpful, too. Maybe a-o (aloha) forming correspond to the tee-h complexness in English pronounciation.

Are there any big differences between я буду говорить and я поговорю? Is the perfective always used after all conjugated verbs except быть or is говорить an exception? Thanks for the videos. I always learn something new!
The difference is in the verbs being perfective and imperfective respectively, so if you say я поговорю, you are talking about a finished action in future, and if you say я буду говорить, you mean a continuous action.

Just to be clear, Мне необходим поговорить с тобой., would be used for males. Regarding perfective verbs being the only infinitives is also nice to know, because I've known that I've seen imperfective in some but now realize they must have been in the future tense. Good lesson!
No, this sentence will be the same for males and females, as необходимо is not a verb, it is an adverb ;)

Привет, Антония. What is the reason you can't use the infinitive говорить after modals? Is it because only perfective forms are allowed (I didn't think that was the case) or is this something special just with говорить? Спасибо!
You can use говорить after modals:
Я не могу говорить об этом. - I cannot speak about it.

Hi -- not sure if you're still seeing comments after so long, but I found a couple of things confusing. If the по form makes a verb perfective and you say this can only be in the past, why is it used for I want to talk to you? Related to this, you also used perfective in the future for your example, so I guess perfective conditions exist in past and future, but it must be Imperfective in the present because the action is still in progress. Thx.

In my language, which is the Portuguese, we have the same rule to do a conjugation in the future and only the first verb, which is the verb ''to go''', changes and the second one remains in the infinitive, like in Russian. May I say the first verb in a future conjugation is an auxiliary verb? What it means? Thank you.

Я учил что "поговорить", это совершенный вид глагола.. так, глагол с личными местоимениями "в простом будущем времени" (поговорю, поговоришь,..)
И если это несовершенный вид глагола как говорить, мы используем 'быть' что бы глаголы были в сложном будущем времени... (буду, будешь....)
А можно объяснить нам, что разницы между ними?
и в жизни пожалуйста. я уже прочитал как в книге, но не могу быть уверен когда лучше "буду говорить" или "поговорю"...
Мы используем инфинитив глагола несовершенного в таких конструкциях как "надо+г.", "нужен+г.", ... или есть исключение??

Разница между "поговорю" и "буду говорить" - первый вариант используется чаще, второй - очень редко, только в том случае, если я буду говорить долго, то есть подразумевается длительный, продолжительный процесс или повторяющийся многократно.

The variant "поговорю" is used much more often than "буду говорить". The latter is used when you want to emphasize that you will be talking for a long time. So you imply a long, continuous action or the one, which will repeat many times.

I've been studying Russian for a while, and I'm really confused by one thing: the usage of infinitive verbs after "хотеть" and "мочь".
Since you said that we can't use "говорить", but only "поговорить" for "я хочу поговорить..." So I tried the same process with other infinitive verbs such as "покупать", "читать", and "спать". I noticed the verbs became "купить" and "прочитать", just like you warned us. However, the verb "спать" remained "спать". I totally got lost because I thought it should be "поспать". Some infinitive verbs did changed but some other did not. The same with using "мочь" with the infinitive verbs such as "мы можем читать..." when it should be "прочитать".
I'm really, really confused with this process.
Well the important thing to keep in mind is the difference in meaning between verb aspects: Imperfective and Perfective. Perfective verbs focus on the result of a single, complete action, while imperfective verbs focus on actions that last a long time, are repeated, or which are performed right now. If you want to say "We can read", you are referring to your ability to read in general. For this we need an imperfective verb, as it's not about any complete action. Therefore it must be "Мы можем читать". Another way to say this is to use the verb "Уметь" instead of "Мочь". "Уметь" means to be able to, in the sense of having learned/acquired an ability to do something: "Мы умеем читать". If you say "Мы можем прочитать", that would mean that you are able to read one particular book. So the focus is no longer on your ability to read in general, but on your ability to read a specific book or text: "Мы наконец-то можем прочитать эту трудную книгу"
With "Хотеть", you sometimes need imperfective infinitives and sometimes perfective, depending on what you want to say. If you want to do something on a specific occasion, you usually need a perfective verb: "Я хочу улететь в Москву", "Я хочу посмотреть новый фильм". But if you want something on a regular basis, you would need an imperfective verb: "Он хочет заходить в магазины каждый день".
But for instance with the verb "Любить" (to love), you always use imperfective infinitives, since the thing you love doing is considered a repeated action: "Я люблю читать романы", "Ты любишь слушать музыку", "Мы любим путешествовать" etc.
If you say "Я хочу купить..." (Perfective) it means that you want to buy something this one time: "Я хочу купить новый телефон". If you say "Я хочу покупать..." (Imperfective) it means that you want to buy something on a regular basis: "После работы я всегда хочу покупать кофе" = "after work I always want to buy coffee".
With the verb "Спать", when you are tired and want to go to bed for the night, you use the imperfective "Я хочу спать"/"Мне хочется спать" because you are going to sleep for a longer period of time. The perfective "Поспать" means "to sleep for a little while". So you can say "Я хочу поспать" if you mean that you just want to take a nap, but not go to bed "for real". Maybe you haven't begun studying Russian prefixes yet, but it's very interesting because learning the meaning of different prefixes helps you understand new words more easily. For instance, the prefix "По-" in perfective verbs like "Поспать" (to sleep a little), "Поговорить" (to talk a little), "Позавтракать" (to have breakfast), "Пойти" (to walk, to start walking), "Почувствовать" (to start to feel) etc., means "a little bit", or that an action is performed within a limited time frame, or is beginning.
"ПО_говорить," "ПО_казать" an action without a certain end. "купить", "дать", "спать" this action with a known end. "ПО_спать" is also correct.

говорить which is imperfective is like to speak or to be speaking. The preposition по can mean across therefore the perfective form поговорить which is like to had spoken in English can be literally translated as across to speak or to be speaking. For example: Женщина в парке хочет поговорить тебе.= The woman in the park wants to have spoken to you. or literally: Woman in park wants across to be speaking to you. Russian does not have articles like in English. сказать basically means the same thing as поговорить (To have spoken). but without the colorful literal translation across to be speaking.

I would like to add in terms of the future perfective just in case there is confusion for English speakers as to why the perfective infinitive when conjugated in a present tense way still is like the perfective future. Говорю means I am speaking and Поговорю is literally: I across am speaking as in for example: Поговорю с тобой завтра.= I will have spoken with you tomorrow. or literally: I across am speaking with you tomorrow. I believe that ideaologically speaking if we native English speakers look at these verbs in this kind of way it will eventually make it easier for us to not have to ask questions as to when to use them because their literal meaning is self explanatory.
