Fun fact: Apparently, in Cantonese, "Shifu" means "master," "Oogway" means "tortoise," and "Chorh-gom" (prison) means "sitting in prison." So it gets funnier when you realize that their names are literally Master Master and Master Turtle and Tai Lung was locked up in the Sitting in Prison Prison.

Shifu is the word master for nearly all kung fu types in English speaking countries it’s not just in Cantonese - a shifu is a title which can be from anything from kungfu to judo it just refers to a teacher in modern contexts

Oogway had like five scenes in this movie but left such an impression in all of them as one of the widest, most profound and insightful characters in all of fiction.
This is, largely, Oogway's story. Every character in the trilogy is measured from him-in a supporting role.
This dynamic gives the series a level of depth we seldom see.
This is why he reminds me of Hagoromo Otsutsuki from Naruto Shippuden, but that is just me.
The reason why I love this movie is for how complex tai lung was as a villain

"...what's the definition of kung fu..."
Literally, "great work" or "great worth". It's the reason all those old kung fu movies would have the line "your kung fu is weak" which would tick off the people hearing it so much. Basically it's telling them that the thing they poured themselves into, the great work of their lives, the thing that they mastered and studied and devoted their lives to, often at great sacrifice... was worthless. But, technically, _anything_ can be 'kung fu'. A baker who works to master the craft can be possessed of kung fu.
To _westerners_ like us, though, it refers to pretty much any predominantly Chinese martial art, or, often, martial arts generally. In _specific,_ though, this movie is referencing the "Animals Styles" art which includes Praying Mantis, Tiger, Monkey, Crane, and Dragon. There's also an independent style for White Crane, Snake, and a few others, which seek to imitate various animals. And all of these styled, indeed all the styles you can find _specifically_ in China, share one thing in common: They're all garbage. Every single one. They rely on practitioners of the style fighting _only against_ other practitioners of the style who know how to 'play along' instead of actually fighting. In a _real_ fight against a trained opponent, these styles lose, and lose _badly._ This is even _more_ clear for some of the utter nonsense styles which claim to work without touching or by gentle movements. They don't work unless someone else plays along. And, more fun, if you point this out or, worse, _demonstrate_ it in China, the Chinese government will target you and your livelihood for being 'disruptive to the culture'.

Remember the conversation with Oogway and Po back at the peach tree. "I understand. You eat when you are upset." And then, after all that... he wasn't hungry.
Your title asks if Tai Lung was evil. The answer is 'yes', but we can understand how he got that way and offer him mercy... if he wasn't so dangerous (honestly, if he'd survived, I'd consider executing him as a threat to the nation). The problem was Tai's reaction to things. He had _multiple_ chances to go on the right path, to accept that he _wasn't_ the Dragon Warrior. Disappointing? Sure. But ultimately what makes him evil is his decisions to attack and try to take the scroll through violence, and not accept the heart-felt apology of a father figure who was mistaken. He selected his pride over humility. And it was that pride that made him a bad candidate for the scroll in the _first_ place, it was the thing he needed to work on. Po never thought he was more than he was, if anything he thought he was _less,_ and it was that mentality, that starting of humility, that made the scroll valuable to him, that could teach him the lesson he needed to learn, the one that was on the scroll: all you need is to believe in yourself.

Kung Fu, IIRC, is derived from two Chinese characters, the first meaning “hard work/endurance” and the second meaning “time spent on something.”
So on a more basic level, it can refer to mastering any skill through discipline, hard work and committed practise but is almost universally applied to the martial arts/fighting styles developed over Chinese history.
Tai Lung is my favorite character in Kung Fu Panda and he deserved to have a redemption arc
I don’t know if you released in the last scene but when Oogway and shifu we’re talking, they were talking about the peach pit growing into a peach tree and then the final scene when they’re eating soup there’s a little peach sprout symbolizing his growth

Tai Lung absolutely terrified me as a kid lol. Him being evil mixed with the fact that a big cat IRL would be merciless was so scary lol
Tai lung is evil here’s why:
Being the dragon warrior aka the greatest warrior or kung fu master requires self peace and confidence in oneself by oneself
Tai lung only ever attempted kung fu for respect - his first thrown punch was mimicking his dad who was shifu and looked to him for appreciation over his actions. Tai lung trains everyday until his bones cracked out of a WANT of respect from shifu who LOVED his son and always loved his son. Shifu found his peace and center and happiness when raising a baby who’s surrounded by golden light seeing his child happy is what gave him peace of mind and pure happiness. To watch a tree grow into exactly the tree it was meant to be- that was his peace.
Tai lung always trained and excelled because he demanded shifus attention and respect. When oogway saw this how tai lung didn’t want to be a fighter for himself but a fighter to be RECOGNIZED as great - he saw darkness because it is not a selfless act or way of living. Tai lung never loved kung fu and never loved himself or his achievements it was never enough for him until EVERYONE recognized his as The Greatest the Most Talented the most Successful and well trained king fu master yet the last lesson to learn was always you are who you are and you are your best. Tai lung would never understand that because of his situation and mindset.
After being rejected ONCE by oogway and not beaten in a battle but in a conversation Tai Lung DESTROYS a CITY and attacks his own father a person who until this point he has looked up to in respect and love. He attacked him with ferocity and the intention to defeat and destroy him - when shifu did not have the fight in him to harm or destroy him back. It was one sided aggression through and through because of a simple rejection. (If they don’t love me they will fear me if they don’t adore me they will not exist -- this is not a hero nor someone who sees themselves as loved or adores themself-)
Oogway chooses Po who has self confidence issues but loves Kung Fu purely because it is about one’s own ability to make themselves free and happy. He sees the furious five in golden light he sees his loved ones in golden light he sees shifu and oogway in golden light he loves them because they are themselves and they have found their own styles/rhythm/center/happiness and showcase that in their actions. The people he loves care for the people they love and care about themselves and are happy with themselves if they succeed or if they happen to fail he still adores them. Po is a hero because he believes that he himself can be one if he just gets a chance to be one, to be free, and to move naturally in a way that suits his body and mind.
Tai Lung is a snow leopard and uses tiger style throughout his fights he uses the environment and people to his advantage to harm them and takes glee in defeating his opponents - he wants his battles to be legendary but doesn’t want to be a hero he just wants to be the Victor. A snow leopards greatest difference and advantage are their tails and their leaps/climbing. All of which is used against his own body - he can climb up the steepest walls he can escape from prisons designed to contain him he can defeat opponents that doesn’t make his actions acceptable or appropriate- he does so to harm others.
Po knocks him down a fight of stairs when he should always land on his feet knocking him on his back- Po is able to out speed him when his speed is important - Po is able to combat his ferocity with peace of mind - and for the extra long tail designed to comfort him and keep tai lung warm even in the harshest environments he uses that length against him to have him bite his own tail. He will act aggressive to the point it harms himself because he will bite first without thinking of where he is targeting or knowing where his body is. Tai lung has belief that he is strong but not that he is greater then a wushi finger hold he holds fear when confronted with the simple move of a pinky finger, he doubts himself and calls others liars and bluffers for their strength instead of recognizing others for who they are the ability they have and what they can do now and in the future.
Tai lung could be redeemed but his behavior and choices were his own and he chose to destroy his city to destroy peace and to destroy any sense of moving forward by continuing in his ferocity and destruction doesn’t matter if it was a snap decision in a day or 20 YEARS - he will continue to choose to destroy others instead of finding happiness with himself and the world around him or finding any sense of peace - at that point 20 years after his outburst he continues to not change and continue in his belief that he is superior and destined for legends without wanting to do the work to be recognized as a positive legend.

Tai lung was raised to pursue a goal his entire life and when the time came he was told he couldn't have it. the way he acted wasn't from being evil.

@@PhilthornTrue he set up Tai Lung for failure, but it’s not entirely his fault. Yes Shifu was a factor, but I don’t recall Tai Lung being mind controlled when he destroyed the Valley of Peace. He would and could have murdered for the Dragon Scroll. Redemption only works if you seek it. Tai Lung could seek it, but he needs a reason for it.

This movie is one of my favs that DreamWorks made ngl
I watched this movie initially when I was young, then ended up watching the whole trilogy about a year ago (I'm in college now). I honestly loved watching this movie again at my current age since I related to Po's struggles with imposter syndrome and Tai Lung's borderline "failing gifted kid" struggles. Maybe I was projecting too much, but I felt Tai Lung's speech to Shifu, asking to be acknowledged and for his father figure to be proud of him.
I feel like Tai Lung will definitely get redemption in part 4

This is my opinion, but with your question of 'Was Tai Lung truly evil?', the answer is not really, he just turned out that way because of what was fed to him, a great example in today's society is Feminism (I know that will piss some people off), initially it was to benefit all people, not just Women, however somewhere along its travels around the world it did turn 'evil', as it is used as a weapon against all Men, and Women are fed the narrative that all Men are seen as evil and Women are never to be held accountable for it is never their fault.

If any Trans person goes through the surgery, their reproductive organs get taken out so they cannot give birth or be able to impregnate anyone - and it is irreversible.

Hey i would really recommend you to watch Hazbin Hotel. It may not be something for very religious people since it kinda makes heaven toxic and shows hell as 'better' ( not really tho, it's still hell). But the songs are a BLAST and the animation is really good. A little warning tho it is not for kids. 😅
