This is one of the shortcomings of the “Poptimism” era. Anthony mentions that Dora should be allowed to open for the sake of the legitimacy of their art, which I agree is how we see things in the world of people who treat music as art. But in trying to be “open minded” and treat the pop world as being just as “artistically motivated” as the non-pop world, we forgot that pop fans REJECT the premise; pop fans already insist that their favorite music is a product and they don’t want the ethos of the art world to interfere with that. This is like being surprised if N*SYNC fans ended up rejecting Rilo Kiley if they opened for them back in 2000. Obviously they don’t want that, within the corporate world they engage with music differently and in the past 15ish years of poptimism we have forgotten that maybe we had it right to begin with.

This video has the effect of sending me immediately going to listen to Dora Jar. Watching the video for "Bump" right now and... its good! Slightly trippy pop, nice vocals, good songwriting, I'd say based on 2 minutes that I like her more than Gracie Abrams, and I don't even dislike Gracie Abrams. There is literally no reason a Gracie Abrams fan wouldn't like this. How.Silly. But glad it happened, because now I'm on the second song I'm checking out of Dora (Timelapse) and its cool too! ALSO... the music isn't even slow??? Both songs at a jaunty midtempo with a decently propulsive beat. Props to Gracie Abrams for turning me on to a new artist, ha!
maaan I remember waiting in line for hours, watching 3 mid unknown openers, just for the one band I wanted to see. I miss those days, the internet is ruining us a little bit
I just asked a completely unknown AI that begins with D, “who is the internet’s busiest music nerd?”. It replied: “The internet’s busiest music nerd is Anthony Fantano, also known as The Needle Drop.” It also gives a nice three paragraph intro to his career and content. Gotta say, this thing knows it’s shit.
Her fans can't be saying this when they know how much being an opener for taylor swift has helped her career. Personally because of the eras tour I got to know about so many new artists that now I'm now a die hard fan of (for example sofia isella)
in my early 20s and i've never seen the sentiment of "idk the opener, they should change it because i don't like/know it" expressed by anyone my own age that attends concerts. it must be either a gracie abrams fan thing or a general sheltered/entitled thing
Literally the opening acts have made so many of the shows I went to. Sure the big shots will obviously be the draw, but I’ve been to too many shows where after the opener is done I go “damn, they’re really good” Seems like coddled people trying to stay coddled
The artist has to call out those fans or at least say that she likes the opener and ask fans to support them. And my faves dont use openers but if they did we'd reapect them! Like we do their collaborators and their live band
I think it’s ok to make a petition for your favorite arena artist to change their opener. Although music is art, concerts are also products. If a lot of the audience really doesn’t like an opener, then it’s ok to express that. Where this petition goes wrong is in the reasoning. You don’t need to have reasons for disliking the opener, but if you have and express them, they can’t be dumb, and these ones are dumb.
I saw Wild Nothing in 2013, i was doing an article for my college radio station. The opening act was the drummer for the Fleet Foxes and I never liked their stuff much, just too sugary. I wasn't expecting much. And holy shit Father John Misty was insane as a fairly unknown solo act. The dude even had an unhinged Kanye style mid-show rant about modern society. I knew he was going to be huge when he had the balls to steal that time from the main act just to complain about technology lol. It was years before Pure Comedy but it was the same vibe entirely.
I have like 20-30 bands in my library that were openers I didn't know before going. Also... Have none of these people just gone to a show at the local spot without knowing anyone? Just to go out and see what's up? I'm starting to sound old "do the kids even go outside anymore?" god damn it...
The first time I saw The Damned and Tiger Army, (who I was familiar with) play was also the night I learned about Tsunami Bomb, I bought the Tsunami Bomb album at that show. Been listening to The Ultimate Escape ever since. Sometimes you go into a show and you get pleasantly surprised.
If anything I’d trust my favorite artist to be the one to show me new artists, people are so closed minded and they forget that those artists inspire other artists in different ways
Maybe I'm a little too stuck in my own bubble, but a Dora Jar/Cannibal Corpse show would be incredible. I'm a big fan of having my life choices and interests being questioned. And yes, my therapist is expensive.
I learned about Alice Longyu Gao when she was opening for Danny Brown a year or two ago. Would never have put those two together, now she's one of my favourite artists.
I saw Dora live on her tour, and she is an INCREDIBLE act. Not only is her music top tier, but she is one of the most personable and energetic artists I have met. She was in the audience head banging with us for the final song. She deserves way better than this!
I've def gone to shows specifically because I wanted to see the opener, and had never heard of the main act. And sometimes, I didn't even remember who the main act was the next day. But, in one of those cases the main act was these dudes called, uh, Knocked Loose, and I thought they were pretty alright. They weren't as good as Gatecreeper, but I could see why the kids would go hardcore into those dudes.
I had to go and check out Dora Jar to see what they were complaining about. Now I'm even more confused because she sounds more upbeat than Gracie Abrams or Taylor Swift's latest album. 1 of the 3 songs that I listened to briefly was a ballad, but that sounded more like a Kate Bush type of thing. She's a bit of a mumbler when it comes to her singing, but she's got something unique about her. She's not just another Taylor or Lana or Billie wannabe, which is more than I can say for a lot of modern pop singers. It sounds like she actually has a personality. I'm not saying that her music is something that I'd personally go out and buy, but she's clearly talented and more than good enough to be successful in the pop world.

@@FD_and_B I think they're poking fun at the thought process that went into the petition in a satirical way.
I'm on my 4th Dora Jar song now and none of them are slow.
If this was a publicity stunt, well played
Truly no way to relax when you’re on fire 🙄
Good reference lol
maaan I remember waiting in line for hours, watching 3 mid unknown openers, just for the one band I wanted to see. I miss those days, the internet is ruining us a little bit
A little bit?
@@x_VineM_x Yeah, I guess it depends how much you personally let it ruin you.
I love Dora Jar, in my ideal world Gracie would be opening up for her.
Leah Senior opened for King Gizzard and it fuckin ruled.
Do young people not know you can just go to a show late? What the shit
in my early 20s and i've never seen the sentiment of "idk the opener, they should change it because i don't like/know it" expressed by anyone my own age that attends concerts. it must be either a gracie abrams fan thing or a general sheltered/entitled thing
The definition of delulu
Literally the opening acts have made so many of the shows I went to. Sure the big shots will obviously be the draw, but I’ve been to too many shows where after the opener is done I go “damn, they’re really good”
Seems like coddled people trying to stay coddled
i think this is a butterfly effect from 2020. kids werent going to shows and learning the traditions and customs
She should have her do 2 sets a show now
The artist has to call out those fans or at least say that she likes the opener and ask fans to support them. And my faves dont use openers but if they did we'd reapect them! Like we do their collaborators and their live band
When I was young, and we didn't care about the opening act we would show up 20 minutes late. Problem solved.
If I’m an energetic band, I’d love to have an opener I enjoy that’s a bit calmer because it’ll make my set seem that much more explosive
5:11 stage diving LMFAO 🤣
Went to a Travis concert and started bumpin Teezo. Went to a Teezo concert and started bumpin Monaleo.
This has some Rick-&-Morty fandom superiority energy
Wow. When you said this was embarrassing I didn't realize it could be THIS embarrassing. Shockingly embarrassing
If anything I’d trust my favorite artist to be the one to show me new artists, people are so closed minded and they forget that those artists inspire other artists in different ways
I really hope all this does is give Dora Jar some free publicity.
People really think their opinions have any weight to them
Maybe I'm a little too stuck in my own bubble, but a Dora Jar/Cannibal Corpse show would be incredible. I'm a big fan of having my life choices and interests being questioned. And yes, my therapist is expensive.
why would you not wanna get familiar with someone who has such a fun stage name? people are so freaking entitled, man
if i was the artist i'd find out who started the petition and ban them for life from all my shows.
I learned about Alice Longyu Gao when she was opening for Danny Brown a year or two ago. Would never have put those two together, now she's one of my favourite artists.
Omg that sounds like an AMAZING lineup -- wish I had been able to see that
@@isabellamorris7902 Bruiser played a set too. It was awesome.
I saw Dora live on her tour, and she is an INCREDIBLE act.
Not only is her music top tier, but she is one of the most personable and energetic artists I have met. She was in the audience head banging with us for the final song.
She deserves way better than this!
dora's music is much better than gracie's too
The most wild thing is Dora’s songs aren’t even slow. Like clearly this person has never listened to her
I've def gone to shows specifically because I wanted to see the opener, and had never heard of the main act. And sometimes, I didn't even remember who the main act was the next day. But, in one of those cases the main act was these dudes called, uh, Knocked Loose, and I thought they were pretty alright. They weren't as good as Gatecreeper, but I could see why the kids would go hardcore into those dudes.
This is clearly a fundamental misunderstanding of how opening acts work.
7:42 she's so goated for this
My second concert was Silverchair in 1996, Local H opened and I’ve been a fan for 30 years
