Thanks for posting this. I was a BFC supporter in those days and recall being astonished that the penalty was awarded at the time and then seeing it on TV later. Justice seemed to have been done in the end. I also recall that there was an issue with the white coated steward seeming to try and put off Hughes - his dancing around is obvious but I can't see how the player, if properly focussed, would have even registered it. A better world of sliding tackles on muddy grounds, stewards in white coats and St Johns' first aiders on hand.....
Sunderland played great attacking football back then, and if they could have got out of the second division would have been comfortably in the top half of the first.
A season of two halves. 2 points here would have been enough to go up. Also, bloody Burridge! He did it again playing for Palace a few years later, but we got our revenge eventually. Was that Burridge's dad behind the goal?
Yeah. Didn't realise we were so close to promotion that season. 2 points off. This game was the start of our 'dodgy' spell that cost us promotion. 9 games in which we only won 2, drew 4 and lost 3. Still, great times though!
Just reading Burridge's autobiography. While his dad wasn't there that day at Blackpool, at his previous club Burridge was once laid out by an opposing striker and when he came round, it was to the sight of his Old Man chasing the striker round the penalty area with a pint glass in his hand.

As far as I recall, Mickey Walsh's stunning effort was voted MOTD's "goal of the season" for 1974-75. Just a shame it had come v us!

@@SunderlandAFCTV 13-6-4 up to Christmas, 6-7-6 afterwards, while Villa in particular went berserk winning 15 out of 18.
