i have been eating that for over 60 years now . when i make it i like to finish the hamburger and remove it from the pan . the in goes the flour to mix in with the fats . some times i add some oil if needed . then brown the flour to get it dark as i can with out burning it . then add the meat back in . no matter what you put it on you will be happy . my kids liked it on the wide egg noodles
Simple. Easy. Delicious. For me, when I can afford bacon, I would (in a separate skillet) chop up eight rashers of bacon into bite sized pieces, cook them to crispy goodness, drain on paper towels and at the end of making the burger gravy add the bacon into it. The burger gravy is good on lots of things such as toast, mashed taters, homemade hash browns, homemade biscuits. 🎉❤
What a surprise for me, forgot about hamburger gravy mom would make it and we would have refried beans with homemade tortillas "Delicious" and economical thank you for bringing it back , so many memories brought tears to my eyes happy tears I might add.
Me too I had this in the 60s going to middle school and this is what they serve for lunch over mashed potatoes thanks for showing this this is been a great memory throwback 😊
The gravy is universal. The differences are the meat, and flour-based selection... chipped beef, hamburger, breakfast sausage, eg- Bob Evans... then toast, or biscuits... mixing these around yields different recipes... but the white gravy is the catalyst!
I made this for my family last night. I used some evaporated milk and 2% milk. Franks hot sauce instead of Soy . Served over biscuits . Paired with some fresh veggies. Mighty tasty. They loved it.
This was always a great meal over toast or SOS. In these tough times i use canned tuna, canned veg like peas and the cheapest day old bread i can find for the toast. It comes together fast and cheap.
This is a great sauce and so versatile. I always find plain meat so bland. My refrigerator door is loaded from one end to the other with condiments. So glad I happened upon this channel. Homemade pink mashed potatoes with this recipe would be comfort food heaven!
When I make this I use Better Than Bullion both beef and vegetable. Mostly I use the beef, but I've found that a small amount of the vegetable adds a depth to it that is really yummy.
Mom and dad made this all the time, it’s where I learned to hate uncooked onions. At 60ish I still can’t eat raw onion. If I cook the onions well it’s great. Thanks for your recipe.
I use to fix this all the time and eat on toast. If you can find the thick Texas toast it is great. I never put onions in it. Also I can’t say it not as good as sausage gravy I like both. My husband was a marine he introduced me to this. I never added soy to my recipe I would have to taste first. Looks wonderful.
I was raised on this! Mom used to add a dash of soy sauce to give the gravy a better colour. My dad didn't like onions so she used onion powder...(sneakily)! Also we just used water...milk was for drinking! Lol!
I grew up eating this, my father was in the military and I agree with another person in the chat as it was called SOS. I really enjoy eating this many ways.
The first time I had this was when I was a cadet at Marine Military Academy, which is also where I learned it's nickname which, abbreviated, is "SoS." I understood the second-S because a slice of bread can visually represent a roofing shingle, but the dish NEVER deserved its first-S because it was delicious! I even made it after I graduated and came home to go to college, and then later when I was a sole-custody single parent needing to feed a hungry kid. And now it's going on the menu for next week. Thanks for reminding me!
I was just going to say this, my dad was Air Force and taught my mom had to make it, it was a pretty well liked staple in our home growing up and Air Force bases... my love now also...
@@holleygrise4667 I know, right? It's not just a nostalgia thing; it really does taste delicious when prepared correctly. People love sausage gravy. Well, take that sausage gravy recipe, substitute ground beef for the sausage, adjust the spices, and make it thicker, and you have what I understand they sometimes call "chipped beef" but we'll (unfortunately) always know as "SoS."
My mom made this for our large family. She called it "Frizzled beef" and told us it was President Eisenhower's favorite dinner. We loved it over mashed potatoes. It was years before I had a clue who Eisenhower was!
SOS was virtually a staple for the navy when me dad was a young sailor. He taught my mom who used to make it with leftover taco meat. I made with tuna and diced onions, carrots, celery, and frozen peas. I think I try again with ground beef.
I use half and half instead of milk and heavy cream or if using milk only I would add more butter. The reason is that the dairy fat is what's providing most of the flavor in this gravy. Another thing I do different is to cook the onions and ground beef at the same time. The beef will be mostly browned about the same time as your onions become translucent. I also add flour at the same time as I begin adding the liquid and I gradually add the liquid rather than adding it all at once since it takes less time to add a little more liquid as opposed to reducing the liquid. All in all a good gravy. As far as the soy and worcestershire sauce that would depend on what I'm having the gravy with.
That's a similar recipe my grandma used to make called "caldito". She used water instead of milk, and she added fire roaster green chile peppers, usually Anaheims. She served it with beans and tortillas 😋😋😋😋😋😋
My mom made this in the 50’s. It’s what we had when she forgot to take meat out of the freezer. The frozen block went into the pan. She kept turning and scraping until it was thawed. She added a bit of ketchup and Kitchen Bouquet to the gravy. We loved it. Yours looks so good. Mashed potatoes please.
That looks good! I made my own version a few times but always used water to make my gravy instead of milk or heavy cream. I made a lot of gravy so it wouldn't be so thick, less meat and more gravy. I could try a combo of water and condensed (canned milk) to add into the flour separately then add the cooked beef in after the gravy is done. All kinds of ways to make this yummy dish, thanks for sharing your version.
This vid made me subscribe. I am an American living in S/E Asia where the beef is hard to find and when it's found it's of breeding/feed poor quality, "so sauce that I can find the fixings for", sure makes for a winner for dinner! Thx!!!
I don’t use soy sauce, but I always use nutmeg and sometimes add chopped peppers and some mushrooms. Love this stuff! I put it over hash browns, toast and over easy eggs
My mom would make this for her and my dad. Us children didn’t have to eat it. She told us she would make this when they were first married, 1947, for about a year because it was so cheap. They had it for lunch and dinner over mashed potatoes. None of us children ever developed a taste for it. She called it scritch scratch gravy
OMG I just saw a piece of my childhood come to life !!! My mother made this when I was growing up and sometimes she would use sausage !!! I Like both !!! Thank you for sharing and caring 👍🏿👏🏿🙌🏼🍭🙏🏻🎈⭕️❣️❤️
As newlyweds this is how we survived. Occasionally I used a tube of Jimmy Dean's hot breakfast sausage instead of Hamburger. Over biscuits or toast, leftover buns...
I have not had hamburger gravy for years since my mother passed away but I do make maple sausage gravy much the same way as your method. I do use shelf stable whole milk at room temperature and it really tastes like there is heavy cream in it. As for hot pan or cold, I start out with the pan warming up ahead of adding the meat. Should not really matter either way 😀
Chow hall SOS. They never used chipped beef. And on the midnight shift on the flight line, this over toast with some scrambled eggs and hot coffee….yum, yum
You make things so similar to what I do. I make this all the time. Exact same steps. You are right, I never thought of putting soy sauce in. I will try that next time.

We were brought up on hamburger and gravy with mash potatoes.my kids loved it.
One of my favorite comfort foods. Started making this in the Navy for me and my shipmates w/ leftovers for our midrats, late night snack.
When I was in the Navy ret. Loved the red SOS to. It was a great breakfast...
I was raised on this! Mom used to add a dash of soy sauce to give the gravy a better colour. My dad didn't like onions so she used onion powder...(sneakily)! Also we just used water...milk was for drinking! Lol!
My mom used to make this when i was younger. Had it over whte bread or toast. Delicious
Ahhh my mom used to make this, my dad loved it and so do i. I still make it for my husband 😊
By the way, I think the meat breaks up better when it's hot so I start with a hot pan
Looks delicious 😋. My dad would make this when I was little girl. 🤎
I grew up eating this, my father was in the military and I agree with another person in the chat as it was called SOS. I really enjoy eating this many ways.
I am actually very grateful for your channel. A great friend to all Sauciers indeed.
Thank you so much 😊
The first time I had this was when I was a cadet at Marine Military Academy, which is also where I learned it's nickname which, abbreviated, is "SoS." I understood the second-S because a slice of bread can visually represent a roofing shingle, but the dish NEVER deserved its first-S because it was delicious!
US Army: same here.
@@charlesmangum2100 My memory is giving me fits. Was "Chipped Beef" something entirely different, or was it just another name for SoS?
@@adamchurvis1 I am confused on that issue also myself. Maybe it just does not matter.
My mom made this for our large family. She called it "Frizzled beef" and told us it was President Eisenhower's favorite dinner. We loved it over mashed potatoes.
It was years before I had a clue who Eisenhower was!
My mother called it, splash on the shingle because she didn't want to say sh-t.
Breakfast of the US ARMY 🇺🇸
Not any more since we are all charged by the flush these days
USAF too.
Hooooooaahhhhhh 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸💙
Reminds me of my dad making sh*t on a shingle.😉
My mom made this in the 50’s. It’s what we had when she forgot to take meat out of the freezer. The frozen block went into the pan. She kept turning and scraping until it was thawed. She added a bit of ketchup and Kitchen Bouquet to the gravy. We loved it. Yours looks so good. Mashed potatoes please.
We had it in our school lunch’s. It was so good, no one brought lunch from home on that day
That looks good!
Just like it was in the Army, SOS. 😋😋😋👍👍👍
This vid made me subscribe. I am an American living in S/E Asia where the beef is hard to find and when it's found it's of breeding/feed poor quality, "so sauce that I can find the fixings for", sure makes for a winner for dinner! Thx!!!
@@MichaelTheophilus906 Good suggestion!
Noodls, spuds, all that well and fine, but BISCUITS! And hot sauce of choice natch.
I like to use sausage, great over biscuits for breakfast
This is how sausage gravy is made too. My fav is over warm buttered biscuits....YUM!
In the Army over toast … at home over rice or potatoes. So good! And yes soy is a secret sub for plain salt 😉
How have I not found this channel before. Gravy makes everything better!
I like it on cornbread stuffing. It’s the bomb
I don’t use soy sauce, but I always use nutmeg and sometimes add chopped peppers and some mushrooms. Love this stuff! I put it over hash browns, toast and over easy eggs
I also add minced garlic
At this point, my mom would have added a can of drained nixed veggies! Goulash according to her over anything! Filling and satisfying!!!
Two of my favorite foods, hamburger and gravy on biscuits. 😊
Like both !!! Thank you for sharing and caring 👍🏿👏🏿🙌🏼🍭🙏🏻🎈⭕️❣️❤️
You are so welcome! I'm happy it brought back some good memories 😊
I could eat that for every meal for a month. Nothing better to me.
This is my go to comfort meal and has been for many years. The only change I make is, I put tons of chopped raw onions on top!!! yummy yummy.
Thank you for making these videos. I enjoy watching them and learning how to make meals better.
I'm happy they help. Thanks for watching 👍
My darling husband loved it when I made this for him. He loved it over mashed potatoes. Thank you for a great video. 👍🏻
You are the Bob Ross of gravy!😊
This looks so darn good - I'd brush my teeth with it👍
Heck Yeah!! That's what I'm talking about👍 I love it👌
I just made this and put it over top of some mashed potatoes. It is good. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
As a Army cook we called it SOS morning staple as Coffee ☕️
You make things so similar to what I do. I make this all the time. Exact same steps. You are right, I never thought of putting soy sauce in. I will try that next time.
My favorite meal when I was in USAF
