The girl is saying, Big girls don't cry after a break up. She didn't want to see how he hurt her. He treated her cruel and broke up with her and then finds out from her mother she was crying in bed over the break up (you told a lie)
The Four Seasons are one of the most successful groups in music history selling more than 350 million records worldwide. This number does not include all the records Frankie Valli sold as a solo artist.
This is another group I grew up with in the 60's. Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. They had so many great hits together such as "Sherry", "Walk Like a Man" & "Candy Girl", "Let's Hang On!", "Working My Way Back to You", "I've Got You Under My Skin" etc. When Frankie went out on his own in the 70's, the songs "My Eyes Adored You" & "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" were big hits for him. Also he had a hit with the song "Grease" from the movie. Always loved that he was able to sing in a falsetto voice.
A similar group from the same time period was Jay and the Americans. We just lost Jay Black at the end of October and like Franki Valli he was uniquely talented, so much so that he was nicknamed "The Voice". You might want to review Cara Mia to see his vocal range, other hits include Come Little Bit Closer or Some Enchanted Evening.
Big Girls Dont Cry is myyy jam! And Im latina. I was adopted and raised by a Polish woman. Her and her boyfriend raised me on the 50’s & 60’s hits. “Shame on you, you told a lie! Biiiig girlls do-ooo cryyy!”
Sherry, Walk Like A Man and Big Girls Don't Cry all hit number one and over 1 million copies. Their first 3 songs all were number 1 Gold Hits. It wasn't until 1964 that they hit number 1 again with Raf Doll. A handful of top 20 hits though I'm between.
Another review well done as the Four Seasons are my all time favorite bands and yes over The Beach Boys and The Beatles who’s music I also enjoy very much. The Four Seasons are one of the first self contained bands to play their own instruments while writing the majority of their 62 hit songs that entered the Billboard Chart. Thanks again and a classic great song Big Girls Don’t Cry is, number one for 5 straight weeks in the fall/winter of 1962.
Their 'December 1963' was and still is a great tune to listen to. They showed us how to take a song to no. 1 in 1976, one of the best years in music : )
You have both recreated so many memories for me. You have been touching so many long forgotten memories and feelings. Thanks for the journey down memory lane!😍
If you haven't you gotta go with "Sherry", or "Walk Like a Man" they are both pretty mind blowing with Frankie's voice cuttin through like a high pitched laser lol. Great u2
The story is a couple are having an argument, the guy tells the girl its over, thinking it would make the girl cry and want to reconcile. Instead she agreed to break up acting like she didn't even care, but behind closed doors neither of them really wanted to break up.
I always interpreted the song/story as the guy probably wanting to feel more appreciated by his girlfriend, tells her that they had to break up ,,, but he was really expecting that she would call his bluff. But the girl surprised him by accepting the break without crying or trying to get him to change his mind. She said, "Big girls don't cry" ...After the breakup her mother told him that the girl has been crying in bed. That is when he says to her, "Shame on you, your mama said you cried in bed ... Shame on you, you told a lie ... big girls do cry" So I guess the moral of the story is that some girls do a lot of crying and begging ... but there are others that they put up a brave front and hide their pain from others. A wise young man should strive to know which type his girl is , so he can be sure he won't lose her in a case of mixed messages. :)
Shawn and Mel...I just came across a gem here on You Tube of an old, but rare footage of a 22-year-old Franki Valli. Singing with a group known then as "The Four Lovers." They were singing on the Ed Sullivan Show on May 6th, 1956. The song they were singing is titled "The Apple of my Eye." That is just a little head, up as to when Frankie Valli came onto the music scene. Seven years later when at the age of 28. He would join a new group known today as "The Four Seasons." And the rest is history.
I was 11 when that song played on Dick Clark's American Bandstand 1962 and also on 1050 CHUM Radio in Toronto Canada. I can still sing that way and never took voice lessons. I'm 72. Since I was six I have loved music and I have loved singing along with the musicians that I heard in the 50s and 60s. I learned how to sing by imitating the singers I played on the records that I played in the 1960s. The lyrics never meant anything more to me than the addition of vowels and consonants that were in sync with the rhythm musical instruments. The young singers in those days had voices that were trained by professionals. That's why they sound so good even today.
Listen to the sound track for the film American grafiti with the same name. That album has pretty much all of the best songs and singers and vocal groups from this time era. You will not be disapointed.
One of the greatest falsetto singers of my generation..........plenty more to react to...... on the day that I found out was having a daughter the first song that popped into my mind was Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You by Frankie Valli check it out
If you can, check out their performance on a Show called Where The Action Is from the 1960's. It was the second show Dick Clark did outside American Bandstand. Also in future Years Bob Crewe would co write Lady Marmalade for Labelle. They were the original Man Band who kicked the door open for 98 Degrees, Color Me Badd and even Blue from The UK.
The great Frankie Valli showing off his talents. Please react to Rag Doll and Peanuts, Opus 17 is a great song also. You can't go wrong with Frankie Valli. Plus you gotta see their story, Jersey Boys. Peace.
In that era ...When the boy breaks up with a girl, she should "suck it up" and not cry like a big girl. Teens were harsh back then, and the girls had to be tough to survive a "relationship" with the cool guys because if he makes her cry, he was not cool anymore. Then there were those cliques that were not cool unless they made their girlfriend cry.
You should do Lou Christie, The song is Lighting strikes he hits some high notes in that song. I have always loved it. I believe it was around the same time as the 4 seasons. Or a little earlier.
Jersey Boys are rockin’ again! This is another rabbit hole! Check out “Who Love You” and “Oh what a Night”. Just two of their big hits. They had so many! The broadway show “Jersey Boys” was based on their career.
Frankie Valli & The Four Season’s had a lot of hits! I have loved them for years, their early years especially 💜I agree with the comment by Chet stevens who mentioned Jay & the Americans a group that I absolutely fell in love with many years ago! Check Jay & A out please 🥰☮️
another good group , you have to know they sang on the street corners, that were safe in ny. alone with Dion, wrote many songs. and his voice. . way cool. T.
The 4 Seasons are from jersey (See the Movie “Jersey Boys” was also a long running a Broadway play !! Italian-Americans used that expression to their young children who were temperamental crying whining etc …. Parents would exclaim “you want to be treated like a big girl/boy ? Come on big girls /boys don’t cry!” I know I’m Italian American who grew up in Jersey and my parents said it to me all the time when I was a crybaby !Those falsetto voices and 4 part harmony of the 4 seasons is also amazing ! Hope this clarifies for those from other parts of the country !
They were watching a movie that’s how this song was created. I think it was a James Cagney movie when he slaps the woman and someone says I’ll be she doesn’t cry because big girls don’t cry
It's about a guy breaking up with his girl and she told him big girls don't cry over that but her mother caught her crying about it and so yes she had her heart broken.
Valli was not happy with his vocals on the various takes of "Don't Think Twice" when he decided to record the song with a "joke" falsetto vocal (an impression of jazz musician Rose Murphy) to reduce the tension in the studio. An executive of Philips Records heard a replay of the recording with a "joke" vocal and wanted it to be released as a single but the recording by Valli and the band could not be released as either a Valli "solo" single or a Four Seasons single. Sold in a picture sleeve with a connect the dots puzzle, the record with the truncated name ("Don't Think Twice") was released as by "The Wonder Who?" in November 1965
I thought Mel said when they did I had the time of my life from dirty dancing she had seen the movie? Cause this is the first song in it when their in the cat
No One could sing CRY like Frankie Valli. They tried but no one came close.
Yep!!
@@davidphillips4476 ryan malloy dont do a bad job
@@Kelly-just-kelly lol can't disagree!
RAG DOLL is a must by Frankie & the 4 Seasons
I actually have that one on 45rpm record. That and Big Girls Don't Cry.
Better than the night
Big Girls Don't Cry was always a good companion song for "Walk Like a Man", it was like they were 2 sides of the same coin.
Much like Rag Doll and Dawn.
I have Walk Like A Man on vinyl
The girl is saying, Big girls don't cry after a break up. She didn't want to see how he hurt her. He treated her cruel and broke up with her and then finds out from her mother she was crying in bed over the break up (you told a lie)

Did you know that the Four Seasons had ties with the mafia? Look it up! It's crazy
They were the number one selling American group of the 60s and early 70s until they got surpassed by the Jackson 5 in middle 70s
@@anthonykoch5794 just watch the movie Jersey Boys, duh.
@@anthonykoch5794 it’s a bunch of Italian new jersey/NYC area natives in the 50s/60s they all had mob ties haha

Most of those songs I have on the vinyl LP "2nd Vault of Golden Hits" by the Four Seasons

I was partial to She Cried. Being close, I think their version is, well, Del Shannon's version is good too.
They always had great stuff
Big Girls Dont Cry is myyy jam! And Im latina. I was adopted and raised by a Polish woman. Her and her boyfriend raised me on the 50’s & 60’s hits. “Shame on you, you told a lie! Biiiig girlls do-ooo cryyy!”
Love this song
Love Frankie Valli songs he has such a different voice
Oh What a Night, one of their best.
another hit, another thumbs up! more please!
These 'oldies' videos you two are doing are making my day - every time. I'm reliving my childhood through music. Awesome. Thank you!
Frankie Valli was the King of falsetto.
He has an 8 octave voice. "sherry".
Walk like a Man is a must.

Just wait till you hear them sing "Walk Like A Man"...that falsetto voice will knock you out.
No one has ever reacted to what I have always considered to be their best song, which is called "Dawn."

Frankie had The Voice!
I forgot how good, and coordinated these voices were.

Rag Doll by them. Check it out!!
Rag Doll is a real tearjerker.
You are correct Mel, this song is for dancing.
I just love that you guys listen to the 50 and 60 music! 👍😊
Mel. .your impersonation of Frankie Valley is spot on! Great job!

You have both recreated so many memories for me. You have been touching so many long forgotten memories and feelings. Thanks for the journey down memory lane!😍
The Jersey Boys were hitmakers back in the day.
Great song but Rag Doll is by far my favourite Frankie Valli song..definitely one to check out 😊

You really need to watch Jersey Boys. It's the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, directed by Clint Eastwood
My wife and I saw the play. It was great!!
His girl called HIS bluff with "The hand" and "Whatever". But in teen , puppy love boys and girls are doing a lot of testing....
Note the great tympani in 4 Seasons songs. Again, you guys got it right with "Beggin'" then and today! "Let's Hang On" is probably dancible!
Frankie Valli is truly amazing his voice is just so unique. Who won song you all haven't reacted to IS WALK LIKE A MAN!
Mel wants to "cut a rug"! Beautiful!! I haven't heard that phrase since 1927 - but I like it!
I always interpreted the song/story as the guy probably wanting to feel more appreciated by his girlfriend, tells her that they had to break up ,,, but he was really expecting that she would call his bluff. Yeah but they're not nearly as good as the REAL Four Seasons though but they're fun to listen to
