why wouldn't you tuck the upper part of the replacement piece under the existing piece? wouldn't that allow for better rain water flow and help prevent water from going behind the patch? btw, enjoyed the video 🙂

You can try relying on silicone caulking where they overlap.

You could try that, however it would be more visible from the street.
My thought exactly. The way this is shown, it's a water infiltration point that will lead to wood rot.
It could be under the eve and will never see rain
