I think that doing the trimming on the old and new like that was brilliant! And knowing the type of paint to use for the matching color is another great tip. Thanks, Scott. You're the best.
I am a sponge for home repair hacks, tips and tricks. I say this because I have no vinyl siding, I live in a Florida cinder block stucco home, but I still watched and enjoyed your video. Just replaced some aluminum fascia at two different peaks, after it was stolen by Hurricane Ian.
Awesome video. I've had a large hole in one of my garage corners for several years now that I just left because I had no idea how to fix it. Now I can actually replace it! Thanks!
I'm not one for gloves but that looks to be a gloves well worth investing in prior to job. Never thought of reapiring a corner that was. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for sharing this extremely informative and step-by-step instructions on how to do this task. I as well have coroner's on my garage that has to be replaced 🙂. Greatly appreciate all of your informative home diy videos. 😊 I do many of my own on my home, my son's, and my sister's.
Do you have a video on repairing a piece of the vinyl siding? Admittedly, i haven’t looked yet and I’m sure some exist already, but your quality and practical explanations feel more reliable than other channels. I have a few projects I’ve been afraid to tackle because they require replacing some siding.
I've capped a few corners, but rather than modifying what's on the house I have been able to get a corner piece that is a ½" wider so I just cut off the nail flange from the new, put a bead of silicone inside the j hook and snap it over the top of the old corner.
I have watched many of your videos. I'm a big DYIer so most times I know the tricks and procedures you are doing. Just watched this on the corner repair. I have repaired corners before the only differences I use is to cut the old and new corner/s I use an oscillating tool, lot quicker. I also when putting the two together I use adhesive on the inside of the new piece before installing. Not a lot (don't want a big mess) just enough to bond the two together. Thanks for you videos, enjoy watching them and learning a trick or two.
Excellent video. Very well explained. I have done vinyl siding on a couple of sheds, and I find it very satisfying, as even a DIY guy can do a perfect job if you are careful. But I did wonder about repairs. Now it is much clearer. Thank you.
This was fantastic! Thankfully I'm not in the market for this repair now, but I've saved this for future reference. Now if you can just help me get this one piece of siding to stop popping up. . .even bought that tool, but it only held for a month! LOL
Great video again! I have a hole caused by tree trimmers in my beige siding...the horizontal pieces. It's about 1.5 feet off the ground, so I think I'll buy a white tube or white vent cover and glue over it like a fake vent. There are other white vent/tubes there from the furnace. Thanks again. I watch all your videos. Much appreciated!
Great video as always Scott! I love that you and your team always make videos that aren't always most common issues, or issues that I wouldn't even think of. Or in my case it's common, I just didn't know that there was a way to repair without redoing all the siding. I do have a question though...would it be better to Acuff the siding with something abrasive to have the paint adhere better or does it not matter with this type of vinyl/plastic? As always, thank you from a DIYer that is always eager to learn new things. Cheers 🍻
Great video. I have a corner piece with a small hole and have been looking for a way to fix it without pulling all the nails and replacing the whole piece, thanks.
I biffed the bottom 2 in of one of my corner pieces on my tool shed with the weed wacker. And I have been wondering for a while how I could just do a little quick patch to keep bugs out. And now I know. Cuz I'm not going to replace the whole thing I'm just going to cobble it on at the bottom and maybe put a little caulking to hold it in place.
Nice job Scott! There’s just No end to your talent! Ive got a bad puncture in my horizontal siding piece, where part of a branch tore loose and went into the House. It’s basic white, so color match will not be as much concern as how i am going to cut that in? It’s quite a ways off the ground, so will be working off a 28 foot extension ladder. Wish me luck, and any suggestions would appreciated. Happy thanksgiving Scott and you fellow tubers out there! 🦃👍✌😊
Great video, thanks or sharing. What I have been looking for is how to replace a starter strip? One side of the house is too close to the ground and water has rotted the lower few inches allowing rodents etc. to get inside the crawlspace. The water has come from melting snow over time and the wood damage is only a few inches, not even the width of one piece of siding. Taking down the whole wall seems like a waste, but everyone says that's what needs to be done to fix it! What is your thoughts if you have the time. Thank you
GREAT VIDEO,, I was always understood you have to use VINYL PAINT (as in automotive] as it is more flexible with temperature changes? So any exterior paint will work??
Didn't quite see how you capped the top to avoid water getting behind the corner piece. Assuming you brought it right up and under the overhang from the second floor. Pretty cool solution though that avoids a pile of expense. Thanks. Also, just noticed that I was already subscribed to your channel so, apparently, you have many helpful ideas. LOL
great video , I goe from the left, i cut an extra 1/4 off the right side of the new post and its easier to handle also on the paint, go to home depot, glidden has a satin pint that is a perfect size
Excellent video. Do you have a video about replacing windows on a mobile home with vinyl siding where the window mounting flange is under the siding? I hope there is a way to replace windows without having to remove and replace the siding. Thank you for so many great videos.
My diy question or have u ever replaced a lock and handle on a garage door? Is it hard to do? Have u all ready have a video on this topic all ready? Thanks again for all of these very informative diys videos. I do lots of them on my own so far. I like doing it.
Gonna help my elderly neighbor fix her corner piece that the landscaper chewed up with the weed wacker. She has a beautiful home and a pest control guy stuff some bright orange steel in there to seal the hole. It looks crazy so I’m going to use your method to help her out.
What prevents that repair from movement? I fell it could, due to gravity, perhaps slide down and out of place. Perhaps a couple of pop rivets at the top is a good idea?
Wonderful information. I only have one question. I live on a very windy hilltop. Will this method still work or do you recommend using a glue of some sort for additional support? Thank you very much for your video.
Thank you for this video. May I ask you if you would recommend using the foam inserts into the corner siding post? Can be used with outside corner pieces when installing TimberCrest I/S insulated siding These are available at Home Depot. For example ABTCO 3/4 inch Outside Corner Foam Insert (PC).
Nice-looking repair. Is the paint you used formulated to adhere to vinyl? Most paints don't. I would have used a bonding primer or chosen a paint that specifically says it can be used with vinyl.
Great vid. As a professional handyman/carpenter I enjoy these tips and tricks. DIYers may not have a fein saw (multi tool)but that is what I use to modify siding we're cuts don't show. Did you consider a bit of caulk in the channel since expansion/contraction of old and new would be equal?
Yeah, a little silicone at the end wouldn't have been a bad idea. I am going to break out the oscillating tool the next time and give it a go. Thanks for the feedback.
If I only did part of the corner I would make sure the top piece overlapped the bottom piece and was on top to ensure water shed off the corner correctly.
Unless the vinyl you are painting is old and weathered, the paint will eventually lose its grip and flake off. You can scrub the new piece wit something like a Scotch Bright pad to remove some of the shine. There are also chemical treatments and special primers available to improve the chances of the paint sticking properly.
Bravo. I’ve been using this technique since before you were born. I’m old enough to say that now. Licensed and Bonded Residential Builder with 10yrs siding experience and aluminum fabrication. The corner was a bit damaged in the middle tho. I’d have to have you change that.
This is a great trick for a quick fix, but we've found that the trim has a tendency to slide down a little bit over time, creating a gap at the top that apparently is a great place for hornets looking for a place to nest. Any suggestions for how to adhere so it doesnt slide down? Can it be caulked at the top?
I have a question for you, at the top of the corner of my siding there is that big opening and my roof does not have enough of an overhang to keep the rain out of the gap. What can I do to cover that gap?
I have a very odd siding question. I live 1 street away from a lake and notice that the siding seems to gather massive amounts of knats. I have tried pressure washing and many other things but, what I noticed is that it does not help. My theory is that due to the static nature of siding, once these little knats get close, they can't pull away. Any thoughts on this? I did start by saying this is an odd one :)
Is there a way to do a small section? I have a corner that is broken in a small area on a 2 story side of the house. I can do from the ground but would only like to go up about 4 feet! Is that possible!?
Brilliant! Ive got a tougher question! Difference between types of siding? My insurance says it’s vinyl, but I’m pretty sure it’s a metallic type! What do i do about the discrepancy, since they know all?!
Our vinyl siding is about 30 years old and has faded very badly. We want to change the color but did not know there is paint for vinyl siding. Can you recommend something that will adhere well to vinyl? Thanks a bunch!
Vinyl siding expands and contracts significantly due to temperature changes. That is why most vinyl siding (especially 30 years old) only came in very light and reflective colors to prevent heat buildup. So you will want to limit your paint colors to very light colors. Don’t paint a dark grey or blue that will absorb heat, expand, and pop your siding loose! Also clean siding well and use a paint that sticks well to vinyl. Your paint store should have recommendations, likely UA-cam will too if you search for “repaint vinyl siding”.
Question…. My neighbor painted an end of his home which was horribly faded vinyl siding and stood out from the other 3 sides which still looked good. A couple months later the vinyl siding that he painted started to buckle, distort, and twist which looked just horrible. He did not paint the other 3 sides of the house as they did not sun fade. Question… what happened to the siding he painted and why did it distort.
Where in the world did you get a corner piece of vinyl siding? All the big box stores in my area (Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, etc.) have been out of stock since the pandemic. I can have a piece made to order but it's pricy and would take 8 weeks!
Some of my siding is stained from clay splashing up on it from rain. I took a piece in for color match. The problem is the new paint is super shiny so I have shiny spots. Should I just get paint that doesn't have a sheen to it. No one in the paint dept can figure out what I need.

Great video Scott! I've had to patch siding before using patches and then color matching with SW paint, but this corner repair was amazing! Thanks!

Do you add any kind of sealant around the new section of corner, to make sure that it remains weather-tight?
I did not but if you think there is a chance at the top you could use a bit of silicone to seal things up.
Very good video. Didn't have clue how to fix it.

Those OLFA knives are extremely good. I use an 18mm for all-purpose use; but you'd definitely want the 25mm for cutting up vinyl siding.

Looks like the new corner piece got damaged sometime during the install. Big crinkle spot right in the middle. 😢
unfortunately it came like that from the home improvement store. They had 3 pieces in that color and they all had the damage. 🙁
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Hopefully you negotiated the price due to the damage...🤑
@@EverydayHomeRepairs maybe you should have mentioned that it sort of stuck out to me, everything else was perfect.... I thought it was odd...
It's also extremely important to buy paint that is made specifically for vinyl siding. It must not contain any black pigments.
How do you do it where you don't have to do entire corner. Like just repairing bottom 3 ft
"Ford F-150 ladder". That was a great line and you should trademark it (or whatever the term is) and offer to sell it to Ford. LOL
One more thing was there a dent in the new corner, adjacent to your head on right side?
Where in the world did you get a corner piece of vinyl siding? All the big box stores in my area (Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, etc.) have been out of stock since the pandemic. I can have a piece made to order but it's pricy and would take 8 weeks!

2 things:
1. That was much better than my idea.
2. Why not paint it before installing it? Much easier.
I wasn't sure if all the flexing during installation would damage the paint.
Thanks
👍
Excellent
Thanks!

How does it stay put and not fall to the ground?
There is enough friction that it will stay in place.
