Maytag MVWP575GW Commercial Grade Washer Long-term Review/Update

  • I've owned this set for over two years now so I thought it was time for a long-term review of this set. At the time, I felt this was the only sensible choice for commercial grade machines given the redesign of the Speed Queens that year. While competitors may include LG, Samsung, and GE, none of those machines so closely resemble what you'd find in a laundromat. I go through my thoughts on this washer/dryer then do a full load of towels on the Deep Water Towels/Bulky setting. Feel free to fast forward through this part if you wish.

I’m reviewing this video since I need to purchase a new washer and dryer. I have a Short Term Rental cabin in Colorado. I’m comparing these Maytags to Speed Queen. It’s seems you prefer the Maytag, still true? Thank you for the video and your time in advance.

Hi Chris! My washer and dryer are inside a hallway closet on the way to two bedrooms, do you think the Maytag dryer is too loud for this situation. Also, is there any other washer and dryer you would recommend besides the Maytags or Speed Queens for a STR property? I don’t want any fancy electronics that break often. I’m looking for simple controls, good cleaning and drys plus long term appliances that function.
      Thank you!

Didn't see your videos until after I had purchased this washer, but it looks like I have made a good choice. Glad to hear that it's holding up after 2 years. I did get the 5 year warranty by buying direct from Maytag, I got free shipping via JB Hunt, and they had it in stock despite the Covid supply chain disruptions. My neighbor is asking about a machine and I'm sending them to this video.
    Thanks.
PS - Love the fact that you told people that if you ain't smart enough to disable the lid lock, you don't need to be doing it. We need more straight talk in the world.

Now that you have used the Maytag for 6 months, what's your longer term impression? If you had to pick a couple things that you wish were better about the washer (other than the size of the basket), what would they be? If you had the chance to exchange this washer for another one, which one would you pick and why would you switch from this washer? I'm shopping for a washer and appreciate hearing the perspective of people who own this machine.

@@YardpigTSI I bought this washer 3 hours ago. It will be delivered Tuesday afternoon. Based on its reviews and feedback, I like it for its perceived durability, cleaning ability, and simplicity. This will be for my mom's house. She needs a washer that's simple, reliable and works fast. No high tech add ons. This washer seems to check all the boxes. I have great expectations that it will last at least 5 years. Lowes is kind enough to allow a 30 day in-home operational test of the washer and free return if unsatisfied. One follow up question for you. I noticed on the floor model at Lowes that the green Start/Pause/Cancel button does not depress evenly. It seems to press inward on a slight angel. Is this the same on your Maytag? Definitely appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Thanks Chris for this video. I purchased my top loading Samsung 1 yr ago and I never thought I could HATE a machine as I do mine. Clothing NOT clean. Takes (not unusual) over 2 hrs for a load. Clothing NOT covered by water with actual dry spots to some fabrics. Debris, lint, etc. from last load showing up on the next load of clothing. My husband has sensitivities and he has been battling rashes for a year...in 30 yrs, suddenly now rashes. It cleared up after actually going to a public laundromat to wash his clothes. Embarrassed to say but our clothes are DIRTY !!! We've had service calls 3 times now. I've had it....thanks Chris....you've given me hope and confidence to get another machine...THIS machine.

      What did you go with?
Your choices for longevity should be only between two machines which is this particular Maytag model and the Speed Queen TC series. For best wash quality, front loaders are the way to go, but there's many issues involved with them and they'll last you about half as long as these two models. The HE type of washers should just be avoided.

Hi there thank you SO much for making this video I really appreciate all the time you put into this and all the helpful information. Iam in the process of replacing my 20 year old Whirlpool washer and dryer and my repair guy swears by this machine - it was so helpful for me to actually see the machine in action. The only reason why Iam on the fence on getting this machine is because of the location of where it needs to go in our house it is visible and is not closed off by doors and it isn’t that great to look at. I am all about being practical and I would always take performance over aesthetics but in our case because of the location and the fact we might be listing our house soon my husband feels we might need something that is a little more visually appealing. I honestly don’t want to replace my 20 year old washer and dryer they both work fine but he feels it’s time I have been holding out for so long mainly because of what’s out there - I am so disappointed as to what the options that are available on the market these days nothing is made to last so it is nice to see that there is a quality appliance still being manufactured. Thanks again and good luck I hope you get 20 plus years out of this machine!

The 1977 GE washer that came with the house I bought in '89, lasted 30 years - but It came with no repair history, and it had been under-performing for awhile before I replaced it in 2007. Its' super-capacity GE replacement was 9 years old when I got it, and it needed a major repair after 5 years with me. But I was able to fix it myself for $80 parts and the washer was a curbside rescue, so I have no complaints. Today, at 24 years-old, it's still going strong. But I must admit there are only 2 people in my household. So my appliances don't get the workout they would have with a large family.

The house I bought in '89 came with a 1977 GE washer. By the time I replaced it in 2007, I needed to re-balance the load with every spin cycle, or else it would try to pound and dance it's way out of the laundry-closet. Replaced it with a used 1998 GE super-capacity machine that's quieter on the spin cycle than when it's washing.
Another thing I really like about this GE is the front panel comes off for servicing. So I don't need to drag it out of it's tiny closet for most repairs. It also has a screw type agitator like this Maytag, but I heard GE doesn't make washers anymore.

I purchased this washer in October of 2018. Like many others I originally wanted the Speed Queen but 2918 was theyear they switched over to the TR series with the awful agitation. So far so good as I have had no issues yet. I use the machine pretty lightly, probably a few loads every 2 weeks (single person). I hope it lasts at least as long as my Maytag Atlantis did (18 years). I am coming up to the end of the 5 year warranty period and I am a bit nervous. A friend purchased the same washer and had one slight problem with the water dripping when it was off. They had to replace the solenoid for the water dispenser (we have very hard water in FL). My last Maytag Atlantis (purchased in 2001) started leaking oil from the transmission at about the 10 year mark but limped along for 8 years until it stopped.
PLEASE NOTE: if you have the PRESOAK option selected on this machine then you will ALWAYS GET A FULL TUB of water no matter what your wash cycle is set to! It does not say it ANYWHERE in the manual and for the longest time I thought the machine had a malfunction.

Great review so far. I’m sure I will add more to this, few points to mention after Eugene reviewed that speed queen they did reprogram the wash times and wash actions on the TR series for 2019. I owned a set of them and they worked actually very very well I used to have the old-school one before. Now about consumer reports they are not the same company that they used to be I trusted consumer reports I’ve contributed to them and I was part of the CU voting for the board members I just can’t believe what it’s turned into now makes absolutely no sense two items that are exactly the same from my own experience they rate them completely different so something is wrong there. By the way the machines look nice and clean and good luck with your posts.

Good to know, I hope SQ works out things with Eugene. I'm so disappointed in what CR has become in the last 5 or so years. When they did the stupid redesign, I knew they had idiots in charge. It takes them far too long to update anything nowadays and they've begun to act like the media in terms of pushing a narrative by knocking ratings down on good products because they're missing a feature that CR decides is important. For example, Honda clearly make the best generators, but CR wouldn't recommend any of them because they didn't have CO detectors. Honda makes CO detectors standard and now their ratings have one Honda and four DeWalts with only 18 models tested in the portable generator category.

First, TY Chris for making such informed, detailed, and demonstrated videos on this washer. I've been searching throughout all your reviews on this washer and haven't been able to find any reviews on how it removes the "lint" or if it has a lint filter. If I've missed it can you or a viewer please send me the link or copy and paste the review again.
I've owned 2 different makes of washers throughout 35 years and the only one that had the best lint remover was my 1st GE Washer bought in the mid-80s that came with a removable small load basket and removable middle lint filter/cover. My 2nd washer, Kenmore, washed great until it died this past March, but the lint remover/catcher was obsolete by 2003 and didn't have an inner lint filter as well and drove me crazy.
I've been researching on all the current makes/models/sizes and haven't found any that comes closest to the old school washers as this one. Your reviews are fantastic and have me sold on this model, yet would like to know about how it eliminates or helps to control the lint/hair in your laundry not outside where it drains the water through the drain hose? If it doesn't have a lint filter then what can I use?
For those of us in apts, noise is an issue, but I rather have a washer that washes and drains well instead of all the "bells & whistles." The size of the cabinet is also a big issue for me since I have a tiny kitchen and might have to move soon as well and the kitchen might be the same size or even smaller (not by choice either only need and circumstances.) Keep making your informed and detailed videos and sharing them with us.

That corkscrew type agitator (AKA the Dual Action Agi) has been in use in whirlpool washers since the 80s, maybe even late 70s. The later Whirlpool built Belt Drive machines had them, and the Direct Drive replacements also had that style agitator.

Hearing from owners about their practical experience with the machine is helpful. I understand the basket is small and possibly one of the bigger drawbacks to this machine, but aside from that, what do you wish could be better about the machine? Would you buy the same machine again? If not, why? I'm shopping for a washer and this Maytag is one I'm considering.

Wow. I find it interesting comparing this to my 1998 super-capacity GE. I'm always learning something with these videos - like how much more effective the screw-type agitator is. (My GE has one)
I noticed all the variable speeds and cycles this Maytag uses, but it was a bit frustrating watching the multiple rinse-spin attempts, until finally the sustained high-speed spin kicked in. (My GE just goes from rinse to the high-speed spin, but has the option of a second rinse-spin cycle)
One concern I have with the newer washers, is reliability of the electronic selector dial and computers vs the old-school electro-mechanical dial-timer and limited electronics on my GE. Not a fan of the lid-locks, but I have no kids, amd my GE has a safety switch that shuts down the spin very quickly. Course, I heard GE doesn't even make washers/dryers anymore!

FYI. if you have the PRESOAK option selected it will FILL THE TUB COMPLETELY no matter what wash cycle setting you choose! it took me forever to figure this out and NO WHERE in the manual does it say that is how it works. Common sense would dictate that if you select a halffull wash option then it would presoak in a half tub of water. I thought my washer was malfunctioning because I could never get the half full tub to work. I rather use a full tub anyway so I never called for a repair person (thankfully). So if you want a half tub, do not use the PRESOAK option

I had the same model delivered yesterday. I have a theory about why people believe the machine is loud. I believe the Maytag is so advanced that it makes a larger variety of clicks, etc. and the agitator cycle and fill cycles make frequent adjustments that change the character of the sound. At first, the consumer's ears picks up all of these variations and thinks the machine is loud but in reality their attention is drawn to the variable sounds of the new technology during the washing cycle. Soon, their mind will no longer notice the clicks etc.

One of the biggest advantages to the technology of earlier washers was their reliability. I know from my experience that digitally controlled things in a damp environment, with detergent molecules floating around in it, will attach itself to any exposed contact point on a computer board - especially where there are soldering spots. The detergent is indeed alkaline and will eventually cause a short somewhere on that board. I truly think the electrical mechanical controls were far superior to what is on offer today.

Overall we like our Maytag Commercial washer. However, we have two issues. 1) Clothes are getting bleach stained if washed after a previous bleach wash. It's as if the but doesn't rinse out all the bleach. Any comments regarding this issue are welcomed. 2) Seems to go off balance quite easily. It would be nice if the machine would stop and warn us when it is off balance and allow us to redistribute the load. The washer tends to attempt to spin even though it is jumping around. It finally gives up and finishes the load, with sopping wet laundry. If we redistribute the load after this and run a drain and spin, they will come out alright. Do I need to replace the springs holding the tub? The washer is still quite new.

Thanks for the videos. I surely appreciate your time to help me choose. My Commercial Duty Maytag which was in my current home when we purchased in 2003, just stopped spinning. It was the first time EVER we had a problem. I never cleaned my machine, I never used fabric softener. It was quiet and always cleaned the clothes well. I heard a screeching sound, and smelled “burnt rubber” ? . This happened April 20/21. Called a tech for a diagnostic. He couldn’t get it to do anything except work. So I paid for the service call $102. CDN. It continued to work well except I noticed the clothes were wetter than usual. And then it happened again, a couple of days ago. This time I was outside so I’m not aware if there was any screeching sound. But when I approached the basement stairs, I could smell that burning odor again. The machine had stopped on the spin cycle. The clothes were sitting in a fairly small amount of water. So I pushed the button off, turned the dial 360 degrees to the start of the spin cycle and turned it on. There was a clicking/ratcheting sound, a hum like the motor was “stuck” and it began to stink of burned rubber. So I called the appliance repair again. Another company, another tech, and a new diagnosis. He claimed there was a problem in the control panel: it was not getting the correct “signal” when in the spin cycle so the motor was working harder than it should which caused the burnt smell. The “fix” was that he would try to recalibrate the “main board” to the motor at a cost of $280. If successful, it would all work as it should. If not, I would need a new motor at an additional cost of $550 plus tax and with a 1-month warranty. This is a 17+ year old machine. I’d love to know anyone’s thoughts on that 🤣🤣🤣

The only thing I can think of, is letting the washer sit with hot water in it caused moisture to find its way in to the control panel area. I cannot do the trouble shooting on the unit since it has a ground fault. Service is not available right now for 30 to 45 days. I'm going to try and attempt repair. Otherwise it's going to be laundry day somewhere else. If you buy any of the new style washer and dryers buy the warranty. Only problem is getting a service rep to your home. Does your agitator feel loose? My agitator has a good one inch of slack when moving it from side to side. Is there a way to tighten it or is it just supposed to be like that? Thanks!

Great video. I agree with your theory about the lesser Lowes warranty. I see multiple examples of computer control there. I have a Maytag bravos HE top load. I hate it, no agitator. Thanks

@@marcwheeler4406 I purchased the Maytag Bravos XL in 06-2015. Shortly after the 1 year warranty expired the washer began to grow loud during the spin cycle, culminating in imitating a plane taking off. I noticed water on the floor the end of 2020 and 2 weeks ago, there was enough water on the floor that I am looking to purchase a new washing machine. I am leaning toward the Maytag commercial washer or the Speed Queen. If my laundry closet was deeper I would purchase an LG.

Does your model number have a 1 at the end-- MVWP575GW1 ? Mine has a 1 at the end and wondering if it's the same may be a dumb question but I feel like my washer does not fill as full of water as yours. I bought my set back in March 2021 and my washer also walks all over when I wash a bathroom floor rug by itself, the washer is leveled too. That's one reason I also bought this washer was because it advertised of being able to handle not getting off balance with a heavier item.

That 1 at the end might just be indicative to where it was bought at

Bought a maytag with the glass top (big mistake). The lid hinge keeps cracking due to the soft close spring putting pressure on the plastic hinge. New lids are $300 and it seems to last about 6 months. I just want something reliable. These seem to be 10x better than anything else out there. Just wish I had come across these initially.

You can even get an older Whirlpool or Kenmore direct drive washing machine, and it'd probably last you longer than most new machines. They're rock solid dependable.

Thanks for the video. I bought a Kenmore elite king capacity washer back in 2004. I can’t find an agitator compared to it. It’s 10 stronger and harsher than this one. This is the closest one I found so far so I’m probably going to get this one. I really need a good agitator because I work in an ER and need my uniforms very clean since it gets blood etc. on them. I just wish they would make an agitator as strong as the one I have.

What's the cabinet height of this washer? 36 inches? It's impossible to find this dimension anywhere but I need to match the cabinet height of my dryer

Hi Chris thank you for your valuable input. On this Maytag Commercial model MVWP575GW, I do have a question: would you be able to wash a king sized blanket, or king sheets and pillow cases is this particular top load? I’m needing to replace my broken 13 yr old Samsung front load washer, but with all the choices it is taking me a while to come to a decision! I have been considering this commercial Maytag and the TC5003 Speed Queen.
I’m 72 and who knows! This may be the last washer and dryer I purchase, so why not take the time to make a good practical decision.

Hi Jan, from what I've been able to tell, this particular Maytag model, and only this one, and the Speed Queen TC series should hopefully be able to last you 20 years and maybe more. Other washers could range from as little as 3 years up to about 11 years. My guess is if you're living alone, somewhat like myself and do laundry less than say a typical household, those numbers for all should increase because it's not used as much.
For king size stuff, the sheets and all should be just fine in this. A king sized comforter would probably not work unless it's very light. Might be best to have a king sized comforter cleaned at a laundry mat or dry cleaned maybe.

Front load washers are great, but there's maintenance involved in owning them and headaches of balance issues possibly and they carry the issue of a design flaws that prevent them from lasting as long as a Speed Queen or possibly this Maytag model (which is newer and untested for longevity yet, but from all indicators, should be good)
The Speed Queen TC basic model might be the only one of all without the use of any computer technology, which I tend to not like because it's just another thing that can go wrong. But I'm not 100% sure if they still making it without the computer motherboard stuff. I know mine from about 6 years ago doesn't have it.
