Please please do quality perimeter drainage, PVC perf with lots of 3/4 clear crushed gravel and filter cloth! Where your house is positioned there will be lots of ground water and hydraulic pressure, the previous owner tried to mitigate it with a waterproof membrane on the floors but it’s better to dig outside and get the water away from the house foundation with proper drainage 😉 You won’t ever regret doing it properly!
We are some 1200 km South of you, a stone farmhouse dominated by the gulfstream. We need to supplement our air source heating with a log burning stove consuming 2 cubic metres of hardwood per winter. DO NOT abandon a log burner in rural Scotland.
We live in southern Ontario in Canada. Our heat pump works most of the year for heating and cooling. When its too cold we have a gas furnace that kicks in to keep the house warm and comfortable.😊
Look into 'swimming ponds' instead of swimming pools. Much better for nature, absolutely beautiful, no chemicals and less maintenance. Would be much more in-keeping with the cottage vibes than a pool 🌱🌻🤿
Do you have a mud room incorporated into your plan? A place to remove your Wellies and shrug off and hang your jacket? Leads to more organization and a much cleaner home underfoot. Love your plan! You are great workers and thinkers.

The foamy bit on that plant is the nest of an insect called the froghopper, aka the spittlebug. They’re mostly harmless unless you plan on becoming strawberry farmers.
We’ve moved into a house that’s had underfloor heating put in in the last 15 years. One year in, our electric bill in the winter is mad. Given you’ve got colder winters, make sure you have the best (or double) the amount of insulation under the heating component. This will help put the heat into the house rather than the ground/foundations. Good luck ❤
@@OneLessCar Sure. I don't know any of the details of ours so bear with me. If there is a good option and a better option of stopping the heat going into the ground, then it's better to go with the better option, yes?🙂

@timbrawdy2249 I guess I took it for face value. We already homestead but this will be on a whole new level. Yes, you are right.. we will be busier than ever.
I absolutely adore this property! With a growth in youtube content views, subscribers, add revenue, brand deals and sponsorships, merchandise sales, etc.....I believe you can steadily achieve your dreams. There's tremendous potential in this home, though it clearly requires extensive renovation - essentially, starting from scratch or rebuilding from the foundation up. I hope renovating proves more cost-effective than a full demolition and rebuild. Despite the considerable work ahead, I wholeheartedly share your vision and see the magic you envision. I'm genuinely excited about your renovations and wish you both nothing but success.
Hi Craig and Aimee. You asked for suggestions. My first is that you make a highlight reel of every time Aimee has said, "This is going to go into my garden shed" (lol). My second suggestion (I wish I could draw it but will have to try and describe it instead), so here goes. If you want a king bed in your bedroom AND a bedside table each, well it looks like that wall could accommodate that if there was not the requirement for a door into your ensuite. So I would bring your bedroom door about a metre and a half back into the entry hall to your bedroom. Then, as you are looking at entering your bedroom from that hall, put the doorway to your ensuite to your right side there. That will free up the whole wall in your bedroom for the bed and bedside tables.
Agreed. Although I did notice in the architect mockup that the "flat bit" lookes slanted outside so maybe they are just going to make it look Flatter Inside with plaster work
I agree - please have a wood burning fireplace/wood stove to supplement your heat pump. Power goes out, you have heat! You will have free wood to burn from clearing your land.
You've probably considered this but I'd lime plaster it, not gypsum plaster. Lime will keep it warmer and allow the walls to breath and protect your stonework
If going ASHP then please add solar and battery storage to save you loads, especially once the woodland is removed and you’ll get more daylight in winter on the solar!
@kingingit I'm still praying 🙏 you can get some local officials to help you keep your forest 🌳 🌲🌴🌿 even to keep half of it. Isn't there anyone that you can meet with to stop deforestation!! 💔

The fastener that came out of the wall is called a toggle bolt in the states. They are used to attach things to the drywall when you cannot find or hit a wood stud.
Some versions are called molly bolts. Usefull for holding up heavy things on a sheet rock wall. When you unscrew them properly the toggle part falls off the screw and just lands in the wall space behind. But since you're tearing out the wall anyway it's a moot point.

An air source heat pump in Scotland is not a good plan - speak to your neighbours about that . Also it would help having Scottish architects/ builders etc, they would advise better on things like that - and the flat roof idea 😕
So many people in the UK don't understand heatpumps. Scandinavian countries and Canada use them. The key is good insulation and sizing the system correctly.
6 months is very optimistic, can tell you’ve not renovated anywhere before lol I also would recommend doing surveys and checks before purchase, you may have been able to find out about the forest being felled
We’ve been waiting for our Building Warrant for 9 months! Or cottage is similar to yours and the extension is not as big as yours! Nothing complicated.
I would be tempted to put on a Gambrel roof to open up the interior head space, provide a bit of a "barn-like" look for a country style, and allow for as many windows as you want upstairs. The benefit is that you wouldn't have those pokey little bedroom ceilings that people thunk their heads on when sitting up in bed. The other thing I might do, after the house is built, is add on a pergola over your patio off the bedroom. The pergola can offer shade, or partial shade, with draped canvas panels between to joists that can be stretched out or pushed back depending on how much sun you want.
Not sure the amount of sun in Scotland would merit a structure to shade from the sun! I say this because I grew up in NH, which has a similar level of cloud-cover.
Love it when you upload your latest news. Bealtaine Cottage is a channel where the love,y lady bought arable land and a house and totally renovated it and bulit her own forests of native trees. I'm just saying you can slowly make your own natural forest haven to enjoy.

I have one tip that I could contribute with! 😅 To switch the fridge door handle to the left side! That's easily done nowadays.. 😃Then you have a more convenient way of getting stuff from the fridge and putting them down on the countertop, without having to walk around an open fridge door. You also could utilize the daylight to see more into your fridge. Good luck in your renovation!! 💕💪👷♀👷♂
The snug Is necessary. Always nice to have a second sitting area for different light, activities, and some separate space. Maybe I missed it but a shower, toilet, and sink on each floor is a Must! Good luck! 🍀 🔨🏴
Might be to late now but that shelf-old bed near the old boiler you are not sure what to do with should be made into a place to store home made artisanal pickles, jams and maybe honey if that it is considered vegan friendly. Not sure if it is close to the kitchen but just imagine seasonal pickles, jams being rotated through the year.
The drill with the chisel for breaking concrete is actually named Mr Judder…. I recommend this naming process for all tools, for example, your wellies are mr and mrs wellington, the shovel is sir cloudsley shovel (be sure to look him up for when someone asks). Oh, I forgot, mr judders actually come in lots of different sizes, so I have a mr judder, a brother judder, and a grandad judder (he’s for concrete slabs).

Amy, your statement at 16:00 is so true, the confidence (of some…..a lot) of men is mind blowing! I’m on a quiz team and the number of times one in particular of our teams gives an answer with total and complete self assurance that I know is wrong blows me (and the other women on the team, including his wife) away. 😂😂😂😂😂

Sp glad you'll get to enjoy being surrounded by nature! Hubby & I retired to a nature-surrounded home in the Arkansas Ozarks, where today a mother deer is browsing in full view of the living room windows, with her THREE fawns hiding in the shrubs. It never gets old!
How to build a cottage with Craig and Aimee...sign me up. The basketball court and fireplace negotiations between Craig and Aimee are fascinating. I am taking notes. I especially love how Aimee is saving the old materials/furniture for repurposing. I love everything she picks out. She's got an eye for good design. ❤ I cannot wait to experience the Bike Charity! 🎉
By which Christmas? ..... Just asking. Get trades to do the waterproofing, drainage and roof so it doesn't have to be redone any time soon. I know you want all the things, but the basics are worth paying to do right. You can get a sauna and all the rest after the house is dried in, sealed up, and has heat.
I have a question and it may be silly but when all of the trees are removed, I am worried how this may effect your property. I am picturing the water running down your hill with your New house and possibly creating water damage not only to the new structures but also creating drainage issues for your land. Might this be a problem with the rainy and snow melting seasons in the furture?
Just wanted to let you know that the copper pipes you have to take out are worth quite a bit of money. If you take it to a scrap yard or metal recycling place you would get a some money back for it. It's like that in Canada, I don't know about Scotland tho. Congrats on buying your new home. It's so beautiful there✈️🚃🏡
I absolutely am in love with your show. I love your personalities your quirkiness. And you do a commercial really good I'm new to your station but catching up quick. I love the birdhouse
You are the champions. We will always cheer you along. I know you will manage too as the forest is harvested. You might then cheer on new saplings. Consider the Solar gains for proper gardens.
Hey Aimee & Craig your plans for your home appear to be amazing!! What type of heating will you have in new cottage? I have hydronic heating from gas boiler & it’s winter here, it’s warm & safe! 🥶😶🌫️ That copper is worth so much!! Aimee with a sledgehammer & camouflage outfit is very entertaining 😂 Don’t you two have enough challenges with renovations & now a new challenge in Sept for charity? 💜💙🇦🇺🐨🇦🇺
I'd do the exact same thing! This is so well planned and while it does look modestly modern it keeps the spirit of the old house. This is gonna be so beautiful.
I cannot get enough of people pouring love and time and energy into old spaces. You guys are bringing life to a place that in time will bring you life. SO beautiful!!! Your "Next Day" made me think of Little Bunny Foo Foo -- "So the NEXT day..." Also, I love bagel burgers. It's always an adventure because you hope none of your sauces come pooing out the holes! I always throw them in the pan I cooked the patties in and soak up the extra oil and seasonings that would otherwise wash down the drain and give the bread a nice, little toast. SO good!! Also, you're really getting a bit of solid bread. LOVE it! Craig and his side eye - LOL!!!!! The challenge! YES! . . and Gary!!!
That celotex looks in pretty good condition, you should save-expensive stuff. Glad you're having fun with all the demo, can't wait to see how you get on ❤

Can’t wait to see the garden cottage with all the little vintage pieces you are trying to save as well!!! Thanks for sharing!
I've just found you on here and love you guys. I haven't long moved to Scotland in the Highlands in a caravan and love it, let's see if I love it in winter though xx
WHAT an ADVENTURE ,sure it don't feel like it at time's!But you are so positive ..Craic is brilliant wigs an all spec s...BRILLIANT .HAPPY DAYS. All the Best . Can't wait ......😊The surprises behind the plaster?!
I totally understand the renovations we renovated our whole main floor, now we didn’t do it but had to live upstairs for months and now we are trying to clean out my dads tool shed as he passed away a couple years ago. And it has been crazy and so many dump runs etc! Keep going you guys are doing great
My friends have an air source heat pump in Wales in a back to brick renovation so verywell insulated. They still also have an oil boiler which is good because it’s not warm enough for them in the winter without it.
Plans sound epic. As you've never done this before how did you come up with the time line? If you watch Grand Designs they always say they want to be in by Christmas, I think the show makes them say it 😂
consider a water-source heat-pump (does your well provide sufficient water capacity?).....it is LOADS more efficient (thus less expensive to operate, meaning solar could provide much/all of the required power).
Loove the plan! Here a silent viewer but as an interior junkie I need to comment: lovely design, great ideas! look into harmonica windows!!! And if you install one: make sure that the floors of inside and outside are on the same level and create an inside-outside connection.
This is gonna be amazing guys! One thing I’d change is the walk in wardrobe. Not sure if I’ve understood correctly but do you have to go through your bathroom to get to the wardrobe? If so, what happens if someone is in the bathroom and you want your clothes? Is there a way to have built in wardrobe elsewhere? Or some people have the walk in wardrobe on the way to the bathroom. Food for thought! Can’t wait to see this all unfold
You'll have a magnificent view once the trees are harvested and in about 30 odd years the replants' will be as tall. Love the half Mansard roof, should have gone full Mansard. Birds other than Crows or other carrion feeders tend to feed at or just after dawn or towards dusk.
I love your channel! It has gotten me through my cancer journey. I think that you all should start planting trees on the very edge of your property, to create your own lush forest. Just in case they come in and cut your neighboring trees down, you can still enjoy your trees.
remove all downstairs partitions, create a kitchen-living area the entire area downstairs, including a woodburning range. build a porch extension at the front, this will also accomodate the turn of the stairs leaving as little of the stairs encroaching into your living area. create back extension for upstairs and downstairs bathrooms. upstairs, dont put in dormer windows. put in dormer french doors with juliette balconies.Eentually, This is going to be a separate bijou cottage for rental, it doesnt need walk in wardrobes. You will be living in the steading conversion
Don’t forget to have a plan for your computer network infrastructure! You really don’t want to rely on Wi-Fi for all of your computers, phones, tablets, TVs and cameras. Make sure you work with the architect and the builder(s) to install some Ethernet cables in your buildings so that you can hard wire your kit together, and I would also encourage you to run some buried fiber optic cables between the cottage and the barn so that everything can be hard wired together. You’ll be very grateful that you did it!
I would suggest if you think your forest is going to be cut down, I would start planting your own little forest right on the edge of your property. So if they cut down your forest, you will still have lush trees to look at.
@feel_goodpaintingsandlifea715 Its a commercial forest, thats what its grown for. Not the responsibility of previous owners / estate agents / surveyors to inform. Its just a known fact that commercial forests are grown to be cut down. Its not a natural forest , does not create biodiversity and once its farmed, the land can return to its natural state.
I would suggest if you think your forest is going to be cut down, I would start planting your own little forest right on the edge of your property. So if they cut down your forest, you will still have lush trees to look at.

I’m on a quiz team and the number of times one in particular of our teams gives an answer with total and complete self assurance that I know is wrong blows me (and the other women on the team, including his wife) away. 😂😂😂😂😂
Hahaha from another planet mate!
The heat pump is a really bad idea in Scotland.
So many people in the UK don't understand heatpumps. Scandinavian countries and Canada use them. The key is good insulation and sizing the system correctly.
@@OneLessCar They don’t work if you have power cuts. We often have power cuts in rural Scotland in the winter, sometimes you can have several a month.
Sp glad you'll get to enjoy being surrounded by nature! Hubby & I retired to a nature-surrounded home in the Arkansas Ozarks, where today a mother deer is browsing in full view of the living room windows, with her THREE fawns hiding in the shrubs. It never gets old!
Missing you both,......... prayers that you are both well. Huge HUGS
Crappy days are always made better with KingingIt❤
15:46 what about a couple of cute house plants would be the perfect window sill for it
❤best wishes with your timeline for achieving your renovation completion goal🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙂
Glad you're having fun with all the demo, can't wait to see how you get on ❤
It’s so fun to follow along on your journey while we are also Renovating a little cottage in the US. Love watching your videos and seeing all the progress you guys are making!!!!
That stairway is gorgeous, surprises around every corner. So EXCITING 😁
I totally understand the renovations we renovated our whole main floor, now we didn’t do it but had to live upstairs for months and now we are trying to clean out my dads tool shed as he passed away a couple years ago. And it has been crazy and so many dump runs etc! Keep going you guys are doing great
Always look forward to vlogs! You two bring so much joy into our lives.
My friends have an air source heat pump in Wales in a back to brick renovation so verywell insulated. They still also have an oil boiler which is good because it’s not warm enough for them in the winter without it.
Plans sound epic. As you've never done this before how did you come up with the time line? If you watch Grand Designs they always say they want to be in by Christmas, I think the show makes them say it 😂
Haha our builder has said as soon as we get the planning - the build will be 4-5 months 😋
P.s love watching your videos! Thanks for letting us be apart of this journey with you!🎉
More than £100K to do it up do you reckon guys? Plans look incredible 👍
The drone shot of bringing bits out the barn. The round coffee table you brought out is a gplan table worth about £400!
You two are amazing people, all you do for mental health. Thanks for sharing.
consider a water-source heat-pump (does your well provide sufficient water capacity?).....it is LOADS more efficient (thus less expensive to operate, meaning solar could provide much/all of the required power).
Loving the house update!!!! Your videos are always so fun! Hoping to take my Kinging It t-shirt to Iceland in August. I have to loose 5 lbs though. 😂
This is fun watching you guys renovate your cottage. Craig! I'm really digging your longer hair and your hair styles.😊
The fire in the old red room could go to the barn as a design feature / cupboard or set up to give heat in there.
6:31 where is the new kitchen going to be
That's such a steal. We paid 175,500 for our 4 bed 2 bath modular home here in Boise Idaho USA 😮
I would take that little ledge/boiler out entirely, and have a beautiful, two-story, open staircase for when you walk in the front door!
All my favourite people in one video!!! ❤ Sarah on the sofa 😂
remove all downstairs partitions, create a kitchen-living area the entire area downstairs, including a woodburning range. build a porch extension at the front, this will also accomodate the turn of the stairs leaving as little of the stairs encroaching into your living area. create back extension for upstairs and downstairs bathrooms. upstairs, dont put in dormer windows. put in dormer french doors with juliette balconies.Eentually, This is going to be a separate bijou cottage for rental, it doesnt need walk in wardrobes. You will be living in the steading conversion
id also use underfloor heating downstairs, covered with flagging stones
I needed to stop by and tell you how much I appreciate you. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face and having a positive vibe on this world.
Hey guys! Im a little confused about the tickets for the castle to castle bike ride - what is the £200 and what is the £1000? Thanks :)
I wonder if your viewers would donate large trees for you to plant so when the forest is downed you have some foliage and plant screening?
Aimee and Craig, congrats on the Welsh bicycle charity event👏👏👏👏👏
You two are very good at demolition!❤️❤️
I live in the Highlands and that white blob on the grass is called cuckoo spit, it's froghopper larve
Love your videos.. ❤❤❤ please make sure that the Forest is not chopped down .. SAVE TREES 🌲 , 🌳 ..
Great idea!!!
Defo!!!
