Hardest thing on my last long trip in my van was bringing too much stuff as well. Also, cheapest gas I found on the east coast was in South Carolina $2.15/gal. Keep on rolling BK
B, agree about the rattles. I drive a new VW Transporter in a day van for Bike transportation, and it's a got a few mods. Rattles drive me insane. Little tip - where you will get "rubbing" between internal panels and anything else, make little wedges of what we in UK call Plumbers tape. It's a roll of self amalgamating rubber. Make little wedges and push it between any small gaps where rubbing occurs, it kills any of that annoying grinding/knocking noise that can occur. Happy trails brother! Molly
White Mountains AZ ... has our "homemade" 12 mile round trip high elevation **summer trail. Pottery shards, elk, deer, bear, turkey, javelina, and more. Several other trails that hit around 8000 foot elevation too. Just somethin' to note. ✅😉
It's a good idea the make a list of everything you have and where it's located. Add to the list things that you buy and store, also things you need to buy. Put your list in some sort of order, so items are easy to find on the list.....like alphabetical or buy what it's used for.
Nice ride with Tommy. I can't believe the sampler snubbed ya like that. I think I kind of remember a single track sampler guy doing videos from a white van ? it's been a while
A good way to keep track of what keys are for what lock is to use a drop of different coloured nail polish. One on the key and one on the lock, drop of pink on the key and a drop of pink on the lock. I used it for my bike rack and it worked a charm and it last ages!
Love all your video's Brian, i have been off the bike for 4 months as it has been kite surfing season in Cape Town. As it is every year you inspire me to get the bike out and get ready for the trails this time of the year, can't wait to see you ride all 50 states.
I had that same exact comforter/ blanket initially in my van. I upgraded to an expensive duvet, which made a massive difference. Totally worth the investment if you do start sleeping in colder temps. I use it up to 70 external temp and have used it down to -7.
Nice Brian. Welcome to SoCal where we have some rad riding as you experienced with Tommy. Smooth and flow its not but rough and wild most of the time. Great luck on your 50 state shred!
You need GasBuddy! You can avoid those 4.59 fillups in Central California with just a search of the app. Also suggest maybe getting a couple of the RotoPax gas cans (2 gallon) and mount them on the outside of the van. You can fill up with the cheap gas and never worry about running out to get to the next cheap(ish) gas station. California boys we make do
@@nwbudro9210 4 extra gallons could be an extra 100 miles. It's better than nothing. It's why virtually every overlander carries the extra gas. I started doing it because Im in the desert so often and sometimes find myself only surrounded by price gouging stations.
I stoped watching MTB vids in spring because I was spending lot of time with school stuff and ofcourse riding my ass out ^^ but now in winter time, I am back baby! And I have alot of vids to catch up to yay! Will watch them during my spinning rides :)
Hi. I drove an 18 wheeler for years. Put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and spray it on the flies until they are no longer a nuscience. The best part is that the rubbing alcohol won't leave streaks or smears on any of the van's surfaces. I'm looking forward to watching you ride in all 50 states. Good luck.

Van is awesome in person, you have everything in there! Thanks again for letting me use the cable cutters to cut the zip ties and finish mounting Tommy's camera to his helmet. Safe travel's!
Anyone besides me already looking forward to how Brian adapts to "Van life" almost as much as his tour of the trails in the US? One episode in, and we have an encounter with insects, a "too cold to sleep in the van" situation, and the precursor to frequent episodes of OCD with rattles, clutter, etc. I wonder if it's going to fall into the category I started living by at about age 40..."I love camping, as long as it's in a cabin with all of the modern amenities." I think I'll start popping popcorn now...should get good. :-)
Great edit Brian! It was so cool to ride with you again. I'm so sorry about the trail conditions on the first trail. We had no idea how many trees were gonna be down all over the trails. It was an honor to be apart of the first leg of your 50 State road trip. Have fun! safe travels! I will living vicariously through your videos 🤘🤘🤘 thanks again for the shout out of my restaurant next time you come to OC I definitely need to feed you 💪
Hey Brian you can use Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Fabric and Vinyl Repair Tape. For your jacket of course. I used it to repair my tent, feather down jacket. Works great 👍🏽!
Speaking as someone that has van camped for a few years, at some point you're going to find you'll want to take everything out and do it all over again. It's really hard to predict how best to use the minimal and awkward space within a van until one has done it, adjusted, done it again, and adjusted again. I bring so much less stuff than when I originally started.
Hey Brian - If you want to repair your jacket, drop in to a local REI and they'll give you names of small shops that can do a repair. Your jacket probably won't be as waterproof as it once was, but it will be usable. REI also sells iron on patches of material, but I haven't used them. Looking forward to more episodes from the 49 state tour.
Hey, welcome to Socal! (Maybe you're already gone LOL.) Here's another tip about keeping your frig FULL - the appliance doesn't work as hard to keep things cold, once they're cold, because all your cold food & beverages help maintain that 40 degree F temp. So the appliance uses less fuel/energy, too. So even if you're low on food, throw water bottles in there to taje up space & lower your fuel/energy use. Happy trails! Loving the videos.
I think they have pieces you can fit inside the fridge too make it sectioned so thing don’t shift around so much in the fridge. You could probably make your own out of Reflectix. A roll is 15 bucks at Lowe’s 😊
Not sleeping in the van! Time to harden up mate, I just spent a few days near a mountain sleeping in a camper, yeah it’s cold but use a blanket? Bite the bullet Brian and embrace your freedom.👍🏻👍🏻

excellent idea. i think a map like that would be something you can look back on with the grand kids. A big map with marks on it is something a trip like this HAS to have!
You'll figure it out. I let my van get a little messy when I'm out doing things then when I have some down time I relax by rearranging and organizing the van. I'm heading to Santos from North Carolina this Friday. Gonna escape the cold and wet Raleigh weekend for warmer FL.
