Hello miles by foot I am connecting on United Airlines from Austin Texas in this airport and I’m going to Detroit Michigan I have a 40 minute connection how long would it take me to get from one Concourse to another just in case I have to change concourses?
From what I can find, flights from Austin to O'Hare land in Concourses B or C (both part of Terminal 1) and flights from O'Hare to Detroit are often in the same concourses, but not always, occasionally using Concourse D in Terminal 2. Walking from the farthest gate in C. back through B, to D, is about 2/3s of a mile, around a kilometer, which even at a good clip will take 15 minutes, which is about the longest possible walk. It could be much shorter. As soon as you land, check the United app to confirm the gate, then check the departure boards inside to make sure you know where you're headed! No doubt about it, this is a tight connection. If there's a significant delay in your arrival from Austin, you may miss that flight to Detroit, but as long as the tickets were booked together and the delay is out of your control, United must rebook you to your destination. Good luck!
International arrival from Europe flying united lands in terminal 5? Then i need to change to terminal 1 for domestic flight Chicago to LAX ? On the way back also by United, it seems there is no terminal switch, which is good as i only have 45 minutes for the international connection.
Great video - very imformative - im travelling to the US next week for the first time and connecting in O'Hare from London, and on to St Louis - Am I right in saying that ill arrive at Terminal 5 and need to get to Terminal 3?
Yes, that's very likely what will happen. After you clear customs, you'll need to use the people move to go to Terminal 3 and re-clear security, assuming your connection is on American.
Thanks for the feedback! This is something I'm planning to incorporate in future videos! O'Hare is a little tricky just because it's so *big.* In some cases, the runways for heavy take-offs are quite a distance from the terminal. However, there's great gate-spotting all over, and the day I visited had some great variety, including a classic liveried American West aircraft!
I was at ORD about 10 years ago. Got great photos of Terminal 5 arrivals and departures from the end of K Concourse. Wondered if that's still possible?
Some important notes. 3:55 Delta is no longer in Terminal 2. They moved to Terminal 5 late last summer. The check-in counters, baggage claim and customer service offices for both JetBlue and Alaska are located in Terminal 2; however, all flights for both airlines depart out of Concourse G which is technically in Terminal 3 (JetBlue flights use Gate G2 and Alaska flights use Gate G4). I've already updated the top comment to clarify Delta's move, but I'll add your explanation for JetBlue/Alaska to that comment. I couldn't think of a good way to explain this in a short period of time in the video, but your directions are exactly right! Thanks for sharing!
If I have an 8 hour layover in ORD before an international flight, should I leave the airport or would it be impractical to leave? I'll have to go back through security and everything.
Is that enough time? Yes, you can get downtown in about 45 minutes on the Blue Line to see anything you might want to (there's plenty to see!.) As long as you're back at ORD two hours before your flight, you'll be fine. I've done this myself when travelling internationally. If you have checked bags that will be transferred for you, no problem! If you have to transfer yourself (collect them from baggage claim then check in again), you may be able to check in and drop off your bags early. If you can't check in that early (most times it's between 4-6 hours before your flight), the baggage office for your airline can often hold your bags for you for a short time. If you feel comfortable doing that, you can go explore Chicago without having to lug your bags around. It's not impractical at all, I love having getting a visit a city I'm transiting through. Chicago has widespread, reliable rapid transit, and as long as you allow sufficient time to return (and extra money in case you need to take an emergency taxi or Uber/Lyft) you should be golden!
Really? Wow, that's a big development! I confirmed this and have added an update! Thanks for providing this! A lot has happened since filming this in March!
@@MilesByFoot Yeah, it's a fairly recent move, just happened in October. Your video was great otherwise - a great snapshot of how the airport is now before things get rebuilt in the next few years!
If I’m travelling from Canada to another country but transiting through O’Hare do I need to pick up luggages at Chicago and drop them again ? ( one booking)?
The short answer is probably not. You'll have to clear customs to enter the U.S., even if you're transiting, so it depends on whether you go through U.S. preclearance in Canada or at O'Hare. Most major airports in Canada will offer preclearance, including Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal Trudeau, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. Not all airlines participate, but if you're flying Air Canada, there's a good chance you will *not* need to clear customs at O'Hare, as you'll have done so at your Canadian airport. Besides calling your airline and asking, a good way to know for sure is to check which gate your inbound flight to O'Hare uses. If it consistently arrives at an M-gate, you'll be clearing customs. If you're landing anywhere else, you will clear customs in Canada and be all set when you land! Safe travels!
Hello, I am arriving to Chicago from Dubai, I am going to be in terminal 5 because it’s international flight. After I go to immigration and pick up the luggage, do I have to go to different terminal or stay in the terminal 5. Also I am going to TN and my second airplane will be in delta and the transit is 4 hours Any advice
Delta currently uses Terminal 5, so while you will still need to clear security again after going through customs, you won't have to go far for your next flight. Four hours is plenty of time for an international transfer, no matter the airport!
Question you said that United can be located in all 4 terminals, but mainly in B&C. Which flights would be in the other two terminals? We are flying from Washington DC to Chicago and Chicago to LA. Normally is this in the B&C Terminal ? Thanks
While it's impossible to be 100% certain, the last 10 flights from O'Hare to LAX have all departed from Concourses B and C, both in Terminal 1, regardless of the time of day or aircraft used. The legs from ORD to LAX are generally flown by mid-size to large planes, which limits the gates they can fly from. The gates in B and C, especially near the concourse center, are designed for larger planes. So I can be about 99% certain at least, with Concourse B being the most likely concourse!
I think I hold the world record for quickest connection in Chicago O'Hare. I was flying from Sioux City to Phoenix and the flight from Sioux City was an hour late. So that cut my connection time from 1 hour 15 minutes down to 15 minutes. It was a small regional plane so they sent me at the front of the plane in row number one so I could get out first. We arrived at terminal 2 gate F9 and I deplaned at about 3:36 and boarded my departing flight in the terminal 1 at gate C18 at 3:52 and of course I was the last one on the plane and boarding was supposed to end at 3:55. And for those of you who have not experienced O'Hare yet, the C concourse is actually further than the B concourse. You have to go through the B concourse and down a long connector tunnel to C.
Hello thank you for your video. I have a question, I have a plane arriving at 12:50 p.m. at terminal 5 and another plane leaving at 3:40 p.m. at terminal 1, do you think I will have enough time to have my second flight? I am French and I am afraid of getting lost in this big airport. Thank you, Beautiful day, Lea
This is on the short side of connections, but manageable. Most of the time you spend here will be in customs, which can take from 30-90 minutes, depending on the day. Once you leave Terminal 5, take the people mover (they call it ATS) to Terminal 1, then re-clear security. After security, you can reach any gate in Terminal 1 in less than 10 minutes. Bon voyage!
You should be fine. They have the terminal transfer bus running again. Plus they have minimum connection times that won’t let you book a connection that is too tight (assuming you didn’t have 2 separate bookings)
You need to be a ticketed passenger for that day to get past TSA. That's why I plan my trips where my flight out is late in the day, so I have as much time as possible to see the airport!
That's about as tight as it gets! ANA generally departs from Concourse C in Terminal 1, and United generally arrives in Terminals 1 or 2. That one might come down to luck and how fast you can move!
I have a flight (domestic) originating in Orlando going to Chicago , and then on too Ireland , I only have 45 mins in Chicago would I be able to make it?
Whew, that is tight! If they're booked on the same ticket, then the airlines are betting you can, but it will still be a challenge. American and United fly to Dublin, so if you're heading over on either airline, your connection will likely be close by, especially if it's American, as American's Terminal 3 is a little more compact than United's presence here. If you're flying United, it will likely be out of Terminal 1, probably Concourse C, which is close if you're landing in Concourse B, just one underground tunnel away. If you're on Aer Lingus, this will depart from Terminal 5, which will require you to use the Terminal Transfer Bus. It goes to Terminal 5 every 15 minutes all day, and you can catch it at Gate B1 in Terminal 1, or Gate G17 or K20 in Terminal 3. It'll drop you off at M13 in Terminal 5. It's a long terminal, so if it's Aer Lingus you're flying, get ready to run!
From Brazil, Chicago is by far the most expensive destination in the US. Up to 50% more than other major cities. Probably because only United has a direct flight.
That scene was filmed in Terminal 3, in the hall before Concourses G and H, which is also the opening shot of this video. This is one of the reasons I love visiting ORD; can't help but picture that scene every time!
I wish! I was there in June 2021, but my inbound flight was delayed so much that I couldn't do a tour. I'll be back as soon as I can, though! What a neat airport!
There are two; one is pre-security in Terminal 2, upstairs when you walk in, over the check-in desks. The other, which I feature in the video at 7:15, is airside in Terminal 3, in the Rotunda. Go upstairs in the Rotunda, and it's at the top of the stairs.
While it depends on a number of factors, this should be possible if: Both flights are domestic (or customs pre-cleared) Both flights are booked on the same ticket If they're the same ticket, the airline(s) think you can make it, and will generally be required to rebook you if you miss the 1h10 window due to an inbound delay. Things that help this are the time of day (you'll need to reclear security, so however long the TSA lines are will factor in), whether or not you have to check and recheck a bag, and how many people are traveling with you. Good luck!
@@nicholasbarry7580 That's about the best combo you could have, but if they're not booked on the same ticket (Southwest doesn't do that), you still run a risk of missing the flight and having to handle that with American, even if the delay is out of your control. Assuming the Southwest flight lands on time, though, the transfer should take about 30-45 minutes. It's close, but doable!
Hlw. My flight is on the 13th December 2024 by Emirates airlines and i will fly from Bangladesh to salt lake city but my transit is in dubai and Chicago and i will be dropped on T5 and my next flight is from T1 , can you plz tell me from where will i claim my baggage from T5 and where to immigrate in T1 ? And how to travel from T5 to T1 ? Is there walk way now? Or train or bus?? Plz plz plzzzz replyyyy my coment
You'll clear customs after you land in Terminal 5, then emerge landside with your luggage. From there, you can take the elevated people mover to Terminal 1, or you can use the shuttle outside. Once at Terminal 1, you'll check your bags again and go through security again.
Even by my standards, that's a long layover to just be in an airport. Depending on the time of day and your baggage and the group you might be with, you could easily get downtown and see a couple sights in that amount of time, which I'd recommend! The Blue Line can get you there and back in about 90 minutes round-trip for $5.00.
The Ohare Metra station is not really a viable option most of the time. It's basically a commuter train with service only M-F and mostly during rush hour. It's also not that great with large baggage.
I didn't know Southwest flew to O Hare. Must be a recent thing. I don't get why it's necessary because they have a big base a Midway. They practically own Midway.
They've only done it since early 2021. My guess is they found enough people were flying to Chicago to use O'Hare that they'd pay for the convenience of landing on site to avoid transiting from MDW to ORD. Moreover, with international traffic down during the pandemic, the international terminal probably had some capacity again!
Many people who live in the north and northwest suburbs most likely wouldn't consider flying out of Midway because it is too inconvenient. Now those people will consider Southwest. I know I will. There is no point in going all the way to Midway from where I live when you have all the choices out of O'hare. O'hare is the main airport for the Chicago area and the most prestigious so I can see why Southwest would want to get in there.
I transited there back in April 2019 when the people mover was not running, there was a bus running airside from terminal 3 to terminal 5. There were signs to that shuttle and to board it, you just had to show a ticket with a terminal 5 departure. It's been a while, but did that get axed?
I gotta say I had a connecting flight thru here the first thing I see when I stepped off the plane into the airport is a huge fight and also a 19 hour delay one of the worst airports experiences and prob the worst airport I been thru, def wouldnt go here again lmao
I can't even sleep or work in my yard or enjoy my pool in the summer bc they chosen to put their aircraft highway directly over my house. Days on end of air traffic extremely low I'm 20 miles west there's no reason for this shit every 15 seconds I get 2 planes 1 just north 1 just south I've put my complaints on their Google reviews and spoke with federal agents who laugh at my complaints about my lack of sleep and crashing my vehicle bc I didn't sleep for days bc of the noise. I've looked into the health effects of airline noise and its tremendously effects and I'm starting to feel my blood pressure change. I can't even hold a conversation in my driveway without yelling or watch TV on full volume. Oh the federal agent responded with he could see there was 1600 flights over my house that day
Conversation for lunch time at the airport train station that are the size of malls that need vending machines arcade games and a piece of the Town carnival they have not been even playing with their print shop They expected everybody to come to them
Illinois bans smoking indoors in every public or government owned building, including O'Hare. You'll need to leave the secure side, step outside any terminal, and smoke in the designated smoking areas, which are at least 15 feet beyond the entrance to the terminal.
This was filmed in March 2022, so the federal mask mandate for airports was still in effect. Few travelers still do now, but more than did before the pandemic; maybe 15-20% of travelers still wear one.

In the late 80's, before what we know as Terminal 5 was built and while Terminal 1 was being renovated, ORD built a temporary international terminal to relieve congestion from the existing terminals, which they called Terminal 4. It was not terribly successful, and it lasted less than ten years. Terminal 5 opened in 1993, but by then, people were used to calling it Terminal 5, so they never changed it.

Awesome and very big airport
Huge!
Question will you being doing a tour of ATL which is one of my favorite hubs?
It's just a matter of when!
Glad I found you heading to Chicago via southwest through O'Hara. Where would a shuttle pick you up? Thanks love the pace of your video😊
Your tours are great. Wish you would point out the best places inside the terminals for spotting, especially the runways, if there are any.
This leads to confusion for arriving passengers about where to retrieve their checked bags. They need to go to Terminal 2, not Terminal 3. Here are the directions for arriving JetBlue and Alaska passengers: from Gates G2 and G4, take a left when you get off the plane, walk a very short distance to the dark circular hall known as The Rotunda, make a soft left turn and walk across a short pedestrian bridge leading into Terminal 2. Straight ahead is a glass display case with women's dresses in them. To the right of those dresses are two glass revolving doors leading out of the secured area and into the Terminal 2 departures hall. From there, walk downstairs to Terminal 2 baggage claim.
I've already updated the top comment to clarify Delta's move, but I'll add your explanation for JetBlue/Alaska to that comment. I couldn't think of a good way to explain this in a short period of time in the video, but your directions are exactly right!
Thanks for sharing!
@@MilesByFoot no problem! 😁
Thank you!
That plane of Butch O’Hare’s in terminal two is a wildcat a Grumman wildcat that was the predecessor of the hellcat
Great info!
One correction - Delta has moved to Terminal 5! The new Sky Club is gorgeous if you ever get the chance to use it.
Can you do tour news terminal c at mco and dever
Hello,
I am arriving to Chicago from Dubai, I am going to be in terminal 5 because it’s international flight. After I go to immigration and pick up the luggage, do I have to go to different terminal or stay in the terminal 5. Also I am going to TN and my second airplane will be in delta and the transit is 4 hours
Any advice
Delta currently uses Terminal 5, so while you will still need to clear security again after going through customs, you won't have to go far for your next flight. Four hours is plenty of time for an international transfer, no matter the airport!
Can you do a tour of Tampa International airport?
Tampa is one of the highest airports on my list of potential destinations to visit next!
I’m only going to be here for 3 and a half hour layover and I really hope it’s not complicated for me
It's more complex than your average airport, but if you're not changing airlines, it's about the easiest it can get!
PS. Just to update you on Terminal 5 M CONCOURSE now has 30 gates, not 19. Recent expansion is completed
Thanks for the update!
Those are thrilling to look back on, but terrifying in the moment!
I use Terminal 3 when I go to ORD.
Thank you so mush I'm flying chicago by myself so I know where I'm going to I'm flying with emirates
Have a safe trip!
The united terminal looks the best. Just looks cool.
Looks classic and futuristic at the same time!
Thank you,
Beautiful day,
Lea
This is on the short side of connections, but manageable. Most of the time you spend here will be in customs, which can take from 30-90 minutes, depending on the day. Once you leave Terminal 5, take the people mover (they call it ATS) to Terminal 1, then re-clear security. After security, you can reach any gate in Terminal 1 in less than 10 minutes.
Bon voyage!
You should be fine. They have the terminal transfer bus running again. Plus they have minimum connection times that won’t let you book a connection that is too tight (assuming you didn’t have 2 separate bookings)
Is there a way I can just walk around as a photographer or do I need to be a passenger
You need to be a ticketed passenger for that day to get past TSA. That's why I plan my trips where my flight out is late in the day, so I have as much time as possible to see the airport!
How about domestic (United airline) connect to international (ANA) transfer in 40 min? Because airline change my schedule 😢😢
You should do an update with how much has already changed with airlines and T5 expansion
I agree!
Can you make a CLT Airport Tour? It would be very helpful for people that are making connections at CLT.
I made a CLT tour in early 2020, but after they upgrade over the next couple years, I'm sure I'll be back!
I flew with Cape Air to ORD last week and was surprised that the airline was moved to G gates (G15).
Right! They'll squeeze in where there's space, and G gates have recently had the most room for little regionals!
From Brazil, Chicago is by far the most expensive destination in the US. Up to 50% more than other major cities. Probably because only United has a direct flight.
Is it terminal 1 the Home Alone 2 chaotic airport scene taking place ?
That scene was filmed in Terminal 3, in the hall before Concourses G and H, which is also the opening shot of this video. This is one of the reasons I love visiting ORD; can't help but picture that scene every time!
Have you ever done an airport tour of Washington Dulles(IAD)?
I wish! I was there in June 2021, but my inbound flight was delayed so much that I couldn't do a tour. I'll be back as soon as I can, though! What a neat airport!
I love 😍 Midway Airport!
Is there a USO?
There are two; one is pre-security in Terminal 2, upstairs when you walk in, over the check-in desks. The other, which I feature in the video at 7:15, is airside in Terminal 3, in the Rotunda. Go upstairs in the Rotunda, and it's at the top of the stairs.
Hello,
I am planning on connecting from T5 to T3 within a 1-hour and 10-minute connection. Would I be able to do that?
Thanks!
While it depends on a number of factors, this should be possible if:
Both flights are domestic (or customs pre-cleared)
Both flights are booked on the same ticket
If they're the same ticket, the airline(s) think you can make it, and will generally be required to rebook you if you miss the 1h10 window due to an inbound delay.
Things that help this are the time of day (you'll need to reclear security, so however long the TSA lines are will factor in), whether or not you have to check and recheck a bag, and how many people are traveling with you.
Good luck!
@@MilesByFoot So the two airlines that I would be flying with is Southwest and American Airlines. I wouldn’t be checking a bag in either.
Fun fact home alone was filmed at that airport
Sure was!
Cool!
Intresting
Traffic, construction, lengthy walks to get to terminals. Go thru Midway.
I have a 7 hours 55 min layover here, looking for things to do :(
Even by my standards, that's a long layover to just be in an airport. Depending on the time of day and your baggage and the group you might be with, you could easily get downtown and see a couple sights in that amount of time, which I'd recommend! The Blue Line can get you there and back in about 90 minutes round-trip for $5.00.
you should explore BOG
Bogotá is near the top of my list for places I want to visit in South America!
3:59 Delta is at Terminal 5 as of 10/2022.
Indeed it is! I've already added a note under the video description!
Do a walk video of Logan airport
BOS is high on my list; hoping to get there within the next year or so!
Can i buy domestic flight ticket from o hare airport to jersey?
You can fly to Newark on either American or United!
@@MilesByFoot tnx so i can purchase the ticket from airport itself
The Ohare Metra station is not really a viable option most of the time. It's basically a commuter train with service only M-F and mostly during rush hour. It's also not that great with large baggage.
Great insight! Definitely agree; it's more expensive, as well. You'll nearly always want to take CTA.
@@canyonoverlook9937 I don't believe Southwest flies to DFW. There you have to go to Love if you want to fly Southwest.
its a great idea but 1.5-2 hours from ohare to midway by this method
I will never travel through O' Hare ever again. It is so painful in every way! If it is your destination flight. Let me share with you about Chicago.
I transited there back in April 2019 when the people mover was not running, there was a bus running airside from terminal 3 to terminal 5. There were signs to that shuttle and to board it, you just had to show a ticket with a terminal 5 departure. It's been a while, but did that get axed?
I'm afraid so :( 2019 was the last year I found it ran.
I hope you do can another major airport (ATL Atlanta) major hub of Delta Air Lines 🎉
I used to think ORD was Orlando International Airport.
Turns out Orlando's two airports are MCO and SFB! I love the codes that don't make sense; always a story behind them!
I gotta say I had a connecting flight thru here the first thing I see when I stepped off the plane into the airport is a huge fight and also a 19 hour delay one of the worst airports experiences and prob the worst airport I been thru, def wouldnt go here again lmao
So basically it’s a city within a city. Just like midway.
Why aren't the train station that are the size of malls that are empty a FBI investigation into infrastructure and transportation
I miss the shiny American planes. The modern eurowhite livery isn't nearly as iconic
Definitely. I can appreciate the neutral look AAL has now, but I miss the boldness and distinction of the old design :)

Illinois bans smoking indoors in every public or government owned building, including O'Hare. You'll need to leave the secure side, step outside any terminal, and smoke in the designated smoking areas, which are at least 15 feet beyond the entrance to the terminal.

Are there still as many people tending to wear masks there as there is in the video?
This was filmed in March 2022, so the federal mask mandate for airports was still in effect. Few travelers still do now, but more than did before the pandemic; maybe 15-20% of travelers still wear one.

What happened to Terminal 4???
In the late 80's, before what we know as Terminal 5 was built and while Terminal 1 was being renovated, ORD built a temporary international terminal to relieve congestion from the existing terminals, which they called Terminal 4. It was not terribly successful, and it lasted less than ten years. Terminal 5 opened in 1993, but by then, people were used to calling it Terminal 5, so they never changed it.
