An old tech once asked me, after watching me work on a stuck engine... He said " did you put atf or diesel in it?" Very serious like. I laughed, and shrugged it off. Later he says ... " Atf or diesel in the cylinders. That'll get her free.."... Soaked in diesel for 72 hours and it freed pretty easy. The rings loosened up, it smoked beautifully even after an oil change. A good trick if you have rusty valves and would like to try to revive it is to put a leak down detector on it roll the engine to bdc with both valves closed and use a dead blow hammer to rap on the top of the valves. Jaring the valves knocks the rust off and the air being forced into the cylinder pushes the loose rust out of the engine. As a vintage bike mechanic I have used and had great luck with this method several times.

I got an 82 running for my buddy and it had stuck rings but the jug wouldn't budge so I threw it back together and started it with a drill to help it build compression
Thank you for refreshing my memories of my first bike. It was an early 70's Trail 70 that my dad built out of 2 s...crap bikes he found at the flea market. After nearly a year of slamming the 2 together, my first ride nearly landed me in the pond. I got back on it (after the shakes wore off) and then he couldn't keep me off of it. It was that ugly yellow color but I didn't care. Fifty cents worth of gas & I could ride for hours. LOL
Awwww THEYRE SO CUTE!!! You guys need to get all 10 running make em all ridiculously fast and have a mini bike race! Itll be epic.. Looking forward to more trophy cart stuff too!

Love the sound of these bikes ,it brings on all sorts of memories like ,the smell of my granny’s tractor shed where it still sits and rots to this day,the bike not my granny ,the pain of running over a ladder that was in tall grass and breaking my ass bone.ahhh memories
They did qualify the Z-50 in the video as Honda's smallest "street legal" trail bike, but in the description above, they write, that it's Honda's smallest trail bike. The Z-50 was not Honda's smallest trail bike. That would be the QA-50, which was a 2 speed and had no headlight or taillight, so It wasn't street legal ua-cam.com/video/S6qBCgy5cdw/v-deo.html . It had a different engine and frame, than the Z-50, although it was still a 50cc 4 stroke. I believe; they made it in the early to mid-1970's. ...I had one as a 48 pound runt 9 year old in 1973! I was too short to reach the ground with my feet on the Z-50, so Dad bought me a QA-50. I was an unruly child, but the belt and hickory switch didn't work on me, so Dad made a deal with me, that if I behaved for a year and didn't get kicked out of school and work during the Summer & after school, he'd buy me a mini-bike. I kept my end of the deal and so did Dad.
He should’ve continued to bust your little ass. So I’m wondering, did you outgrow your “unruly child” spell or did you grow up to be an unruly adult????
familiar sounds.. I love it. I have a similar blue bench 'chevy red' honda monkey I got when I was 11-12 yrs old. always takes a few kicks to get it started when it sits for a long time, but it always runs. good engines. nice find and a steal for what you paid, even if they're a bit stripped.. a good one can sell for 4000€ in my country
a bit of history.. I've read somewhere the honda monkey was made for mine workers for transport between the barracks and the mines, since the 4 stroke runs so quiet and bike is so small, it was an ideal form of tranport also in the mines. Air pilots also had a 125cc engine monkey which could quickly take them to the airfield when necessary. (btw you can get brand new 125cc engines from china and they are cheap as dirt 😉😉)
"You got a nice one. the front wheel turns." - John. Rolling laughing here! Lol! Honda makes an impressive machine! Really enjoyed this video, keep em coming! Very cool stuff. I am now wondering when Ike's video was filmed and did he work on his bike before coming to John's house. Lol! Get some big bore kits and finish up the bikes and compare it to Ike's time right now.
In Finland these were one of the first very popular mopeds (in Finland when your 15 you can get a moped license and drive a max 50cc moped) and their popularity had just grown more and more and nowdays there are people building 190cc versions of these like this one, ua-cam.com/video/jNX7KC7nNv8/v-deo.html Ps. In Finland these are called monkeys.
I'd love to see a full restoration of at least 3 of them. You could then donate them to a home for kids or some local families that adopt kids. Bikes would then have travelled full circle. I bet Go Power Sports and Honda would get on board sponsoring something like that.
I got a 1981 ZR50 (the red one) for Christmas 1981 when i was 8, I loved that bike It would do 40 mph, until one day i took it for a spin when I was 13 after it was abandoned for 2 years and the chain came off and smashed the flywheel casing and bent the output shaft, it was terminal and i'm still not over it!

My dad (and mom) said no to motorized toys when I was a kid. Then when I was 16 I met a dude named Isaac with an old go kart. We got it running and I made a career out of it! Respect your parents decision, then when you move out, get a nice Z50, Trail 70, old mini bike, or go kart 😁

Paused this as soon as it began to play. The whole reason I pushed play is because the thumbnail immediately brought me back to one of the best if not THE best of my childhood memories. OK it's March 31, 1993 it's my birthday. I arrive home from school @ 3:30 PM a half an hour prior to my dad arriving home @ 4. My dad pulls in the driveway and in the back of his truck is a red 1980 Honda 50. I'm excited! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me! There is a problem though. It doesn't run. The problem? NO SPARK. The solution? A points file and the removal of the flywheel sidecase. Running in minutes!!!!
I loved this video. You just gained a subscriber. I would love. I MEAN ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see Ike's Z 50 restored to the point that it has a seat and uses the original gas tank. Since that bike is nearly identical to my first dirt bike it brings back many great memories. If the tank doesn't have any large holes in it and is just rusty inside a great way to get the rust out is to buy a bag of lead shot. My second dirt bike was an '81 XR 80. It came from a middle of a field and looked like it was in a similar condition to the 50. So please pretty please get that 50 running proper in all her glory

LOL
Memorys-exactly why this semi-old dude just bought a Honda Monkey!
"Oh yeah I hate that!" HAHAHA smartass. This whole video is a testament to Honda's quality. They should sponsor you after this.
Awwww THEYRE SO CUTE!!! You guys need to get all 10 running make em all ridiculously fast and have a mini bike race! Itll be epic..
Looking forward to more trophy cart stuff too!
These things are awesome. I think I’m going to buy one
Me too I have always wanted one
Be prepared to spend some $$$. These old Hondas are big sellers.
My dad found a 1978 Honda 50 at the dump in pieces about 10 years ago. We put it back together and it still runs today. Hondas are unstoppable.
3:20 new nascart?!
I'd I was wondering too
shhh you weren’t supposed to see that
Hondas ruggedness is legendary, that little bike ran with a tiny bit of tinkering after it had been settin' outside for 20+ years.
I swear this dude lools like Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights.
This is what would happen if Hank Hill retired from selling propane and propane accessories
Shake n bake!
Well. You have a new subscriber. Good video! I love finding old things and fixing them up.
2 is both? What about charles?
These were about as rough as I have seen and still you got one running. Impressive! Can't wait to see more videos on these.
Can easily tell who the real mechanic is out the pair 😂 John just started learning to turn a screwdriver
Ike is such a good teacher though and he's so patient 😂
Why you gotta make fun of the man? Everyone starts somewhere right?
Steven I agree with you hell atleast hes out there doing what he likes and has a buddy to teach him and share the passion with
Give me one now we're leaving gig
Ike works on old stuff, John isn’t as good with points and stators
Introduced my 6 yr old granddaughter to mini bike world. She loved your video and we have started a mini bike fund. Thanks guys!
Hey dont diss the junkers man , thats where you started john . How soon we forget . Thats why i watch
The zip tie is a wonderful thing. The Z50 was amazing that it ran at all. At six years old I started on a 1969 Honda 50 mini trail. I miss it.
Love how much Ike’s brother looks and sounds like him lol
Lol, no kidding... I had to replay it..
I had one of these as kid and fell head over heals in love with it. Such good memories associated with this bike for me . Thanks for the great vids fellas. I tried to do a jump once and the bike was so heavy it threw me almost completely over the handle bars, lol good times.
Someone didn’t know what they had..these bikes are little gold mines today.
I've been loving mine since 1981. I've even used it in my "Ronnie & TJ" videos. Awesome bikes!
I love the Top Gear time board
Greatest mini bikes ever made. Awesome job guys an quite a collection you have.
I really enjoyed this video it was a blast from my past my first bike was the red Honda 50
Andrew Startek same
Love the sound of these bikes ,it brings on all sorts of memories like ,the smell of my granny’s tractor shed where it still sits and rots to this day,the bike not my granny ,the pain of running over a ladder that was in tall grass and breaking my ass bone.ahhh memories
Got a z50 when I was 7 put a tractor tread tire on the back of it. Had a blast!
These are the kinda videos I like from this channel. Great job guys.
Thanks
I had an old qa50,still miss that little dude. I enjoy seeing the oldies being resurrected.
We have one of those red Honda’s at home they are worth a good amount in alright condition I’m Australian btw
familiar sounds..
Build a drift trike out of one of those that would be sick!
It’s perfect!
Drives by with a Molotov cocktail in hand...😂
Hey when did randy macho man savage start at cars and camers lol
And Frank Hill XD
Brother!
Just awesome guys, don't know how i keep finding all these dudes from NC. Keep up the killer content
They should start making those again, they would sell like mad.
@@SashaLumi Bud this and a grom aint the same
@@danki1153 it is not grom
In china they made replicas of them. Jincheng monkey, skyteam monkey etc
Everyone is buying the little ones from China now. Dirt cheap, built cheap lol
They made a 50th anniversary model in all chrome in 2017 and other anniversary models before that. And there is the new monkey with the grom motor.
John's has a better seat, cool wheels, and the goofy, old style handlebars. Since you have so many, maybe you could build a mini 50 chopper!
Congrats guy !...........Job well done.
yo is it me or does this guy sound like Hank hill, I love it.
God dangit bobby
Thats X-actly what i was thinking
I got a 1981 ZR50 (the red one) for Christmas 1981 when i was 8, I loved that bike It would do 40 mph, until one day i took it for a spin when I was 13 after it was abandoned for 2 years and the chain came off and smashed the flywheel casing and bent the output shaft, it was terminal and i'm still not over it!
Had one when I was 5 we had it for 3 years first thing I got pulled over by the cops in too mom made dad sell it but sold it to a family friend they still have it even though it’s now welded to a coil spring in their playground
thats actually a creative way to utilize an old bike. You should get a honda grom or a monkey!
We moved out to some property and started playing with 2 strokes the 50 was 30+ years ago but my boys are wanting my 87 250r now oldest has a blaster with a 450 bike engine on it youngest has a 350 raptor
I bought a very clean 1976 model Z50 last year. I've got an 88cc kit with a bigger carb to put on it, can't wait to get it all up and running and road registered.
I was gonna buy one but my dad said no
Felt that
Same here
My dad (and mom) said no to motorized toys when I was a kid. Then when I was 16 I met a dude named Isaac with an old go kart. We got it running and I made a career out of it! Respect your parents decision, then when you move out, get a nice Z50, Trail 70, old mini bike, or go kart 😁
Shit I got a 50cc Honda for like my 5th birthday. It gave me a permanent scar from the exhaust burning my leg but I still had fun. I want to get another bike but I can’t fit on a 50cc. So 250 it is!
@@FishFind3000 I could have written that. I have the same scar on my right calf just under the knee. I was too little to lift it off of me. 1972 Mini-trail, gold because chicks like it.
I would love to see a video on how to go about purchasing a vintage mini-bike. I would also like to know how to get in touch with Tired Iron Classics and possibly make a purchase if they have any Honda Z 50's available. Thanks, keep the content coming!
In Finland do we have tons of these, many are still running.
Nice
