    He was the "Pelé" of F1. The guy went out, won 5 world tittles straight, without even unshaping his hair, then quit cause he was unbeatable and had no thrill on doing that anymore. Just a master of his art. Respect from Brasil

    Juan Manuel Fangio was legendary. He’s got a winning percentage in F1 no one could ever come close to achieving now, winning nearly half of all of the races he was in. He was one of the oldest racers on the track, but his many years of racing experience gave him an edge few other racers had.

      There's also the fact that compared to later F1 the number of races was lower, so you had to win less. Also the performance between the cars was pretty equal compared to the later parts of the sport where innovations would see teams make rocketships that would distance themselves from backmarkers very fast. Though it was the deadliest period and the one where the most use of your attention and skill was needed...He was also lucky, especially on Nurburging ....Lots of accidents there and it could have gone bad at any moment since the tracks were not as strictly maintained and supervised for debris or other stuff on the tarmac as today.

    * 5 World Drivers' Championships: 1951 (Alfa Romeo), 1954 (Maserati/Mercedes), 1955 (Mercedes), 1956 (Ferrari) and 1957 (Maserati).
    * He is the driver with the highest percentage of victories (47%) in the history of Formula 1, without considering the American Lee Wallard (50%), who ran only two GPs and won one.
    * 29 pole positions and 23 fastest laps.
    * 35 podiums: 24 first places; 10 second places and 1 third place.
    * 14 abandonments
    * 4 constructors in 8 seasons: Alfa Romeo (1950-51); Maserati (1953-54 and 1957-58), Mercedes (1954-55) and Ferrari (1956). He was champion with all his teams.
    * General classifications: 2nd. (1950); 1st. (1951); 2nd (1953); 1st. (1954);1st. (1955); 1st. (1956); 1st. (1957) and 14th. (1958).
    *The statistics obtained by Fangio are practically unbeatable
    _He started in 51 grand prix of which he won 24 (47%), and came second on 10 occasions (19.6% of the total races).
    _29 pole positions in 51 races (51%)
    _He competed for 8 years, of which he was the best in 5 and second in 2.
    Basically while he ran he came out first or second in every year except the last one.
    Those statistics are practically impossible to achieve during any driver's career.

    24 Victories (47.06 % UNBREAKABLE )
    29 pole positions (56.86 % UNBREAKABLE)
    23 fast laps of the match (45.10 %)
    35 pódiums (68.63 %)

    I personally think there is no GOAT, due the incomparability of racing conditions and technology in different eras. A 50ies car was driven in a very different way than say an 80ies car and again one of todays cars.
    But IF there would be one, it would most likely be Fangio.

  • @gnubbolo

    the best in understanding the mechanical vehicle and race tactics, perfect height and body weight for the limits and rules of the time, smooth driving, and finally the best also from a political diplomatic point of view capable of sitting in the best car and signing the better contracts. the first modern champion.
    I believe that Nuvolari was faster, but he raced in a category that was clearly more extreme in both power and economic means available, virtually infinite, this makes a comparison between a grandiose era of Grand Prix and the poor F1 of the 1950s difficult.
