  • AIP Diet is starting for me! I'm doing the AIP diet to quell a Hashimoto's Flare and I'm taking you along for the journey. I explain what the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol (AIP diet or also known just as the Autoimmune Protocol) is and also what I ate for AIP for Day 1 breakfast and lunch..
    Note: I follow the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol developed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, which is called the AIP Diet. The Autoimmune Protocol by Dr. Amy Myers is very similar but slightly different in what has to be eliminated (like in the Paleo version, black pepper is eliminated)

      Michele Spring today is my first day. My stomach is crumbly. I’m wondering if Swiss chard is doing that?

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  6 років тому

      Ack, sorry - somehow this comment got lost in the mix and I'm just now seeing it! Are you feeling better now? I probably wouldn't suspect swiss chard unless you typically don't eat greens at all and it's your first time eating some in a while, or if you're eating them raw.

      Michele Spring Hi, just starting, is it recommended that you steam or cook vegetables like cabbage, carrots, etc? I'm wondering if eating raw carrots would trigger something.

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  6 років тому +2

      They're a lot easier to digest when cooked, but it really depends on you - if you're coming into this with digestive issues or a digestive-related disease like IBS, Crohn's, Colitis, etc, then yes, definitely cook your veggies at first. If you don't have those though then you can try raw veggies and if you have a lot of gas or bloating after, then I'd probably pull back on them for a while, but otherwise, they're fine.

    I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a few months ago and my therapist introduced this diet to me a few weeks ago. After discussing it again yesterday, and informing my therapist that I have been on a raw food diet this month, which has helped with the pain a lot, I decided to search the AIP diet/ protocol and this was the second video that came up in my UA-cam search. Im glad I did. Thank you fir this video, its really helpful. I wish everyone the best!

    I'm going to start AIP today, I cooked everything last night. I have HS (hidranettis supperativa) and before I found AIP I was already eating healthy but with a few mistakes. I also found out that icecream, milk was the cause of me not getting better but the first thing I did was to drink Tumeric with black pepper, limon and a little bit of honey. I drink it in the morning before breakfast. This had help me with my inflammation but it's also good to heal different stuff. The only thing is I have to cook for my husband something else but at the same time he help me by supporting me and making sure I'm ok. I really do think this will help me because I feel better even with the mistakes I did. Thank you for your video.

      good luck with AIP! And don't think of it that you were making mistakes, some people eat those things without any issues so it's not that those foods aren't healthy, they just might not work for you at the moment. It's all a process to find out what works for you and doesn't. And you might be able to eat them again someday as well!

    In my 8th week of AIP due to Hashimotos and inflammation that my Naturopath hopes we can find a cause for. The hardest thing for me when starting was the lack of sugary sweets! Made a batch of cookies made with Carob, Dates, mashed Banana, Coconut Flour - they were dry, but fine. Then I found Tiger Nut Flour! Made some Tiger Nut Butter (Tiger Nut Flour and Coconut Oil - added salt) and put it on top of those dry cookies along with some coconut cream - YUM!! Batch cooking and Planning makes it so much easier to do AIP! Still learning and taking care of me ...

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  6 років тому +2

      ooh, what a great idea on how to make tigernut butter! I received some premade tigernut butter from that Simply AIP box I got (in a video a bit later after this) and I've been eating that, but I didn't know you could just make it. D'oh! haha. Thanks for the tip :-) And yeah, batch cooking and planning definitely help. Basically, the only cookie I've eaten this whole time has been the Carob Chip Cookies from Flame to Fork - just because I make a double batch and then freeze them. I've been trying not to eat them other than when I go on a picnic since one of my struggles is with blood sugar swings, so I've only made 4 batches and they've lasted me the entire 2 months so far (I still have several left). If you want to try them, the recipe can be found at: www.flametofork.com/2014/11/chewy-chocolate-chunk-cookies-aip-grain.html

      The psychological need for sweets was the hardest thing for me to deal with. I didn’t even have much of sugar cravings. I just could not let go of the idea of snacking, having dessert and having a sweet breakfast. So I used to obsess for hours looking for substitute recipes that had compliant ingredients (I cut out all sugar including fruit except for a small amount of berries so I did not find any “sweet” compliant recipes lol). Eventually I was able to let it go and view a cup of berries as a dessert and then eventually not care to have dessert at all. In addition to paying attention to what you eat, it is also important to address the attitude toward food. Whole30 has a very good approach in my opinion. Do not try to recreate the foods you are not able to eat. It’s a trap.

    That is so interesting that paprika gave you depression! I am today on day 1 of this diet, feeling a bit stressed about the restrictions. The reason I went on this diet is because of constant stomach inconveniences regardless of my healthy eating, which i think are due to a leaky gut. Besides, I have some intolerances, paprika is one of them. On top of that acne and a menstrual problem. I believe this diet could help me heal my stomach so I can enjoy eggs again as well as cheese and an occasional sourdough bread... Thank you for the recipe! It sounds tasty, definitely gonna make it !

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  5 років тому +1

      While it's definitely better to eat whole veggies or blending them for the fiber, if you aren't going to eat them there's no point, right? So yes, drinking them as a juice I would think would be better than nothing at all. Just be careful with some of the goitrogenic foods like kale if you've got any thyroid issues and you're drinking a lot of raw veggie drinks (typically cooking these veggies can negate a lot of the thyroid-blocking compounds and drinking a lot of raw green juice can be problematic for some).

      There may not be a need for you to do AIP if you're seeing good results with Paleo. Many times Paleo is all someone needs. Yes my family did it in 2013. All 4 of us have mthfr (homo) and 3 have hashis. :/ AIP was very effective with symptoms. But we have since "gone off the wagon" and most symptoms are back. So I will probably start us back soon. (We are building a house currently so cooking and prep is a little difficult and kind of overwhelmed with staying organized and motivated right now. So I appreciate your honest "real" video the other day!!.) Thanks for sharing your journey.

      Definitely! It sure can be hard! And if the food changes aren't doable with your move right now, it's ok to just spend your efforts on stress-relief. Adding the food changes in might put you over the edge - and managing stress is just as important. You can always add the food changes in after you've settled in (or if your symptoms get really bad).

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  2 роки тому

      Hey sorry - was on vacation so didn't have a chance to respond before now, but there are actually quite a few stories of people with POTS doing really well with AIP plus definitely endometriosis usually is helped with an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. So AIP is a great choice to check out - but also not the only one. I just say that as Ella from deliciousllyella.com has POTS and has done wonderfully with a plant-based diet. So not to confuse you, but I feel you have a bit more leeway than some in that you could try a number of things and find relief, whereas some people with specific autoimmune conditions do better with AIP than anything else. Hopefully that makes sense - basically, I think if you aim for an anti-inflammatory, whole-foods diet that removes processed foods, I think you'll find a lot of improvement.

    If you've noticed an obvious reaction to a food, is it still okay to reintro that food later on once your immune system has calmed down? I've done AIP before and I'm fairly certain I only developed a reaction to almonds after I went back on SAD. Otherwise almonds are very important for me for managing other conditons, like heartburn. I'd hate to lose them.

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can try reintroducing a food that you had a reaction to again after a period of time. If you've had a particularly BAD reaction you may want to wait at least 6 months or not reintroduce it, but if it's just a mild reaction then it just might take more healing and you can try again after a month. If it doesn't work then, wait another month, etc. It took me several months to be able to reintroduce paprika, but I finally was able to do so.

    I’m at wits end with my hashi. I’ve already extremely restricted my diet ..
    Had 2 f,ares up within 5 weeks. And on those 3 “normal “ weeks, I had baseline symptoms. I might have to “step up” my restrictions again. I watched this whole video, and I like the idea of so many healthy foods through out the day. I get the feeling that people with hashi need more nutrients than necessary because we can’t seem to retain them… is this true?

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  Рік тому +1

      Yes, it can be true that those of with with Hashi's can't retain them, especially if your gut health isn't optimal (your body isn't able to break down and utilize the nutrients in an efficient manner). But also because those of us with autoimmune disease need a lot more nutrients to help regulate our immune systems - the immune system needs a LOT of nutrients to work optimally, and since ours are already not working correctly and attacking our own tissues, they need more than usual to get back to "normal" and then stay that way. (That's a very glossed-over, high-level explanation, but hopefully you get the point 😀)

      Thanks so much Daisy Jo! (sorry for the late reply - I've been on vacation). When I'm not doing this, I mainly eat Paleo, sometimes with white rice and sometimes if I go out to eat I'll enjoy whatever I want (but gluten-free). I've found though that Paleo is where I feel my best long-term (after doing this AIP to get to feeling great in the first place). And if you go through each of the videos, the descriptions under the video should give you some links to recipes or the cookbooks where you can find the recipes - you may be able to find the cookbooks at your local library to check them out.

      So agree with standard American diet making people sick. I thought I felt healthy until I went on a strict diet for 4 months to find a link between food and skin problems. The diet only helped by about 50%. Nevertheless, I went back on a standard American diet for a couple weeks mostly due to a lot of travel, and all these symptoms that I used to have but I was blind to before are coming back now. Like I used to feel nauseous in a car and I used to think it was normal, but then it went away while on a diet and I didn’t even notice. So needless to say I am looking forward to going back on the diet.

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  2 роки тому

      If you really can't eat most of the stuff on the list I might find another healing diet that would suit you more. AIP isn't the only one out there and the last thing you want to do is reduce your foods to the point where you're only eating a few things, every day. That can be just as detrimental as eating things you don't tolerate as it can shift your gut bacteria to not tolerate as much. So it might be that you just need to try something a bit more expanded - like Paleo or even a gluten-free, dairy-free diet instead. It might take a bit longer to discover what might trigger symptoms and heal, but plenty of people do great on these diets.

    Your videos have been very helpful. I've been mostly keto for almost 3 years. 150# weight loss. I've been treat for hypothyroid for 16 yrs (it tanked after having my son). Last year I was diagnosed with hashimotos. Gained 20# back. The endocrinologist never advised me on any food choices...and in fact would change med dose and then deny it. Never warned me about flare ups or anything. Fired her. Fast forward to last September. I went on vacation, went off keto for a week, got a horrible head cold, and coming back to a lot of work stress created a perfect storm for the worst flare I have experienced. I was so exhausted I thought I might have mono! 2 wks ago I started AIP keto... not quite perfectly as I would read different things and realize I hadn't exculded something. I went into this just trying to reduce my flare symptoms. I told people I was pretty sure I didn't have any sensitivities. In the last 2 wks, I have lost 8#, and do feel slightly better. Little scared that I really might be sensitive to something...
    My sister recently had her thyroid panel checked and it came back fine... but she forgot to ask antibodies be checked, so I sent her some info on why she should at least be aware she is at higher risk since I have hashi and our dad had RA., and how she could have hashi and still be fine on a TSH result.

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  4 роки тому +1

      Wow, you've been through a lot! I hope you continue to feel better and that you heal enough that you AREN'T still sensitive to anything. Yes, there's the chance that you have an intolerance to something long term, but with a leaky gut you can be sensitive to pretty much anything, so healing can take a lot of that away and then give you back a lot of the foods that might have been causing you trouble. I'm rooting for you!!

      What if as in can you do AIP? You can if you can eat beef and seafood for sure. Any less protein sources though and I wouldn't recommend it. However, you could always do a modified AIP diet as well and include beans and see if you feel better with them, and if not, try removing them for a few weeks as well. But beef and seafood is enough - especially if you can either eat beef liver or take dessicated beef liver pills to get a lot of the nutrients they offer.

I don't tend to focus on portion sizes much, except when it comes to eating grains these days as eating too large of a portion will raise my blood sugar (you can see that in my video on wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor - ua-cam.com/video/XMKttUOpo0k/v-deo.html as that's basically the only time I ever worry about portions.) Fish and crustaceans have tons of nutrients that are very helpful for autoimmune disease, so that's good you can tolerate those. You could always do jackfruit too as a "main" dish - if you get sick of the proteins you are eating, but it doesn't have much protein so you'd have to supplement in some way. I'd usually say by using collagen, but it sounds like you may have an issue with that too. There are some options you could explore, like adding green peas to your diet (if you can tolerate them), which are typically not allowed during the elimination phase, but might help you get some more protein in. Peas are one of the first foods to be reintroduced, so I'm not as worried about them for a special case like this - you could always remove them if you aren't getting better.

    • @MicheleSpring

      you sure can - BUT the caveat is that you've got to make sure there are no fillers in the supplements that aren't compliant, like corn, dairy, gluten, etc. They can be sneaky and inhibit healing if they're in the supplements.

    Can you do vegetarian AIP? Or what is the impact if you just do salmon, chicken for example rather than liver, beef etc. Is there nutrients in meat that actively helps autoimmune, or is it such a big part of AIP just because so much else is cut out and meat isn’t inflammatory? Thanks!

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  Рік тому

      It's not really recommended to do a vegetarian AIP because you do cut so much out and it's really hard to get the nutrients you need without any beans or other vegetarian sources of protein. But to answer your second question, yes, research has shown that there are a lot of nutrients in meat that can help the immune system regulate properly (as in, recognize that the cells that attack your own tissue are being created, etc). It doesn't mean you can't do a vegetarian diet to feel better from your disease, as people definitely have, but I wouldn't go this particular route.

    I'm a vegetarian and having trouble following the AIP diet. What kinds of foods or recipes would you suggest?

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  3 роки тому

      I'm working on getting all of my recipes better labeled, etc so it's easier to see, but if you go to my website to the AIP recipes page ( thrivingonpaleo.com/autoimmune-paleo-aip-recipes/ ), a lot of the "bowls' are suitable for vegetarians if you just remove the meat. The meat is a very small amount and therefore more of a "condiment" so it isn't the star of the show as in a typical "meat and potatoes" kind of meal. However, protein and some other nutrients can be a problem without being able to consume legumes or nuts, so you may have to modify AIP a bit to accommodate that. Like try the elimination diet but add beans.The bowls are perfect for that as you can just add beans to the bowls... Hopefully that makes sense as I just got my 2nd covid vaccine and my brain is FOGGY, lol!

    I am wanting to give this a try. I am tired of being in pain more days than not. I am curious how you do it with a family. Do you all eat the same or do you cook something different for you husband and cooks?

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  6 років тому +1

      I'd say I cooked 90% of the dinners to be the same for everyone, but then I might add another side dish to appease them for a lot of the meals, like rice or some Paleo dinner rolls, etc. Sometimes I'd cook the protein and then add different seasonings/sauces to theirs vs. mine too. Then the other 10% of the dinners were when I'd eat something completely different, like the Paleo on the Go meals I'd eat when they'd get takeout. Breakfasts were completely on my own, but those I mainly batch cooked ahead of time because mornings are so rushed for us. And lunches were either leftovers from dinner or something I'd cook on my own. I really recommend checking The Healing Kitchen book out by Aleana Haeber as it has quite a lot of family-friendly AIP meals in it and was the book I definitely went to the most.

    I’m not sure I’ve been doing aip now for 3 and a half weeks and I’m loosing hair like crazy. I’m not sure if this is a process or not. I have autoimmune thyroid, pcos, ibs, and endometriosis. So I know I have a lot of healing

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  5 років тому +2

      If you're still losing a lot of hair 3 weeks in, make sure you're getting adequate nutrition in. Like a really good variety of vegetables, organ meats if you can (I personally take dessicated beef liver pills since I'm not such a fan), and seafoods as these will be the most nutrient dense. Those plus bone broth and good fats too. Hair loss can be normal when healing just because hair is a low priority in the body and nutrients will get diverted elsewhere, but if it continues you'll want to maybe get specific nutrient levels checked with your doctor to make sure you don't need to address that. (What Specific nutrients, etc are definitely something I could go over with you as a health coaching client but it's hard to determine without knowing your history, etc)

    • @courtneypine1330
      @courtneypine1330 5 років тому +3

      You do nutrition coaching? I’m having a hard time fitting in vegetables because I’m always on the go. I aim for fish 3 to 5 times a week and lived maybe once a week. Other then that it’s grass fed beef, turkey and chicken. I do about 2 servings of fruit a day 4 servings typically of vegetables, and cook everything in coconut oil or avocado. I snack also on Kalamata olives. Drink kombucha once a day. And also snack on plantains or sweet potato chips

    • @MicheleSpring
      @MicheleSpring  5 років тому +1

      I don't do nutrition coaching, but I can speak to the general nutrients you need to for autoimmune health and the foods you can use to get there or what testing you should ask for. You sound like you're doing everything right though (except the veggies, and I get that - maybe make some veggie-based soups you can drink?) so maybe it's just a matter of time before everything rights itself out. Stress levels ok?

      Many people who have fibromyalgia have found relief using AIP - it's a suspected autoimmune disease but even so, the reduction of inflammation in the body and figuring out food triggers part often is enough to offer people their quality of life back. I have several women in my program right now that have fibromyalgia (as well as other autoimmune diseases) and have been doing really well overall with all symptoms.
