    I too was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis AND before I was diagnosed, I too couldn't understand why I was eating only one tiny meal per day (mostly a small piece of chicken or pork with a baked potato) and after eating like this for months, I was still about 15 lbs. overweight.(I understood that losing weight is more difficult as one ages... but I didn't expect having to eat such tiny amounts of food and not shedding any pounds.) All I can say is, I am feeling okay and so long as I don't eat in excess, I'll continue doing what I'm doing. Sad that I can't pig out like I used to... but so long as I'm healthy, I'm happy. Now, I am taking Levothyroxine and it wasn't working very well until I accompanied it with zinc. The zinc made all the difference in the world! Also, I take two tablespoonfuls of turmeric (once in the morning, once at night). The Turmeric is so important for keeping the inflammation controlled... it helps me immensely and I suggest you try it! Thank you for this very informative video, and I wish you great health!

    Well, if you strength train you will gain healthy weight, which people have to keep in mind. Gaining fat is not the same as building muscle. Cardio makes you lose fat AND muscle (but strengthens the heart), because the stress causes your body to achieve flee-mode, instead of fight-mode as with strength training.
    So if you have hashimotos, don't only focus on the weight, but how you can improve the ratios in that weight too! An example: someone weighs 70kgs and loses 10kgs of fat and muscle because of increased cardio, they might lose more muscle than fat, which in turn lowers the basic metabolic rate (just look at marathon runners!) But if one would stay at 70 and increase strength training, one might not lose weight but build muscle and lose fat, which would make your BMR go up, resulting in easier weight (fat) loss in the long run. Muscle is what we wanna keep, fat not as much, for better health.
    So don't just look at BMI or obsess total weight! Instead, look at your fat percentage and try to maintain your healthy muscle weight!

    This was so great. I have Graves disease as well as other AI diseases like Cavitating Lymph Node Syndrome and Celiacs. I too went through the grieving process. For 3 decades I had a high white blood cell count and the doctors dismissed it because otherwise I was healthy and active. Much of my conditions were well hidden as they were under control by my healthy lifestyle. But once something really bad happened to my mother and me, my body crashed because of the stress and I lost the life I knew. But now today I see the silver lining to the entire experiences. I am not happy something bad happened to my mother and I at the hands of a very bad person, but I am thankful for that person as I was going through life completely exposed to very dangerous gram negative bacteria that could kill or disfigure me very badly. (sepsis) Without that stress induced attack on my body, who knows how long I would have gone on not knowing. Now, almost 2 years on, I am nearing remission and slowly getting my life back. This time last year I could not even lift a shovel to garden. Today I planted 20 trees. I was able to use a weed whacker without losing my grip or the feeling in my arms. That brings me so much joy.
    Saying that, what brought me to this video was my weight. I have been a steady size 4 or less for my entire life and now I too cannot lose those pesky 10 lbs. :) I do want to lose the weight - I will not lie about that. But I do also understand completely what you mean by the importance of knowing when to rest. Sometimes I have to approach it as what I NEED to do if I want to have the energy later, when my body is ready, to workout and be as active as I want to be. Like my doctor said - medications are good but only can do so much. The rest is eating well, cutting out the sugar and processed foods, cutting out as much stress as possible, sleep and exercise.

    First time in 14 years I truly feel like someone else knows my journey with Hashimotos 💝 thank you so much!!!!! 💝 I weighed myself just before discovering your video, naked, no glasses or scrunchie, anything to see a lesser number. My weight was 100g higher ... again. i checked the scales with a spirit level, to make sure it was giving an accurate weight 😮 I lost 24kg in 2021 by loving myself, and trusting i was enough and enjoying clean living. I've since put 12kg back on. Today i realised why. I started doubting myself, because my GP thought i was taking too much levothyroxine to lose weight, she didn't seem to believe i had lost weight by clean living. I lost weight because I chose to love myself, and ironically i have gained weight worrying about my GP's false understanding. Being alone in this journey is the hard part. Thank you for reminding me that self compassion, belief in yourself and clean living IS the life i love. Naked, with spirit level in hand, was a paradigm shift moment, time to accept myself, in this moment, not chase an elusive number. I choose self compassion, health and joy, it does make me happy. From now on i'm focussing on meditation, gratitude, clean diet, daily strolls and slowly building strength with gentle bodyweight-bearing exercises (lovely to use this weight in a positive way 😊). Rather than worrying about this body, it's time to ENJOY LIVING ... WITH it. Thanks again for sharing your journey, you are awesome 💝

    I have to say that I laughed out loud when you said you didnt know there were aip snacks and treats. ME TOO! Ive lost 60 pounds just by aip foods alone. I was eating to stop my pain too before I started aip. I am still on the reintroduction phase. Every time I add a new food back in, I try to weigh myself that week. To see if its causing inflammation, as I have a problem with that. I may add a few snacks in here. I have a huge problem with fake sugars.. and even from high sugar fruits. I need to limit that as well. So biggest thing I have learned from aip? Learning to listen to my body! Bless you for always sharing yourself with us.

      LOL - you're the first person I've met who also had no idea about AIP treats and snacks! And I so relate to having issues with sugars. For many months, I did not even do well with AIP compliant natural sugars like maple syrup and honey. And I needed to limit fruit for months too. I do pretty well with honey and maple syrup now, but I do not eat it much. I can eat more fruit now as well. Yay for healing! I learn the same HUGE lesson since starting AIP...listen to my body and every body is different. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and insight!

    My PCP has started worrying about my weight. I am definitely overweight, I know that. I am on a lot of medications and know that Paxil causes weight gain. My life has gone just like yours, as far as working out, I worked full time, homeschooled and was in college at the same time. I worked out 2 hours per day. Now, I am very overweight and on 2 Antidepressants for PTSD. I'm so thankful to have heard your vlog today. I cannot ever be that person I was, I dont' want to be. I want to walk the park and not stay in bed for 2 days. I want to take a trip to Tampa and not stress about getting sick. I KNOW food is causing so much of this, I did Paleo for 3 weeks last year and lost 15 pounds. It wasn't a super super diet, I lost so much bloating. I've ordered what I think I need and will be starting AIP over the weekend. I've been eating gluten again and have no shut off for fullness. What did you do on AIP if you were really hungry? Until I can get that full feeling back-that's what I'm concerned about. Also, what did you drink? Thanks for you vlogs!

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому +1

      You're welcome Rhonda, I am happy to help. Thank you for sharing a piece of your story, and your insight. My heart is with you. It's so hard and frustrating. I am so excited you are starting AIP this weekend! I have an AIP start here page on my website with some tips for starting as well as many AIP articles. You can find it here: shannanemrow.com/start-here/. As far as what I drink on AIP. Hydration is huge. I aim to drink at least half of my body weight in ounces of water each day. Throughout the day; sipping rather than gulping. Staying hydrated will help flush toxins, aids in the healing process, helps you feel full (many times people think they are hungry but actually need to drink water), and so much more. Further signs of mild to moderate dehydration can mimic some autoimmune symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, headaches, and more. Other than water, I sometimes drink non caffeinated herbal tea and bone broth. Bone broth is easy to make and so healing. You can make a homemade soup with it if you aren't a fan of drinking it. I drank it daily when starting AIP. As far as eating enough to avoid hunger, make sure you are macrobalancing your meals. Meaning, include a protein, carbs in the form of veggies, and fats at every meal. The fat is going to help keep you satiated longer. Add a piece of fruit in, but be mindful of how you feel when adding fruit. Most newbies to AIP feel better when they limit fruit to 2-3 servings a day, and stick to berries and green apples, etc. Also, experiment with eating 3 larger meals a day or 5-6 smaller meals a day. See which option feels best. Cheering you on! Hugs!

    Mine is the opposite. Down to 100 lbs now and i cant stop losing. I cant get enough calories on AIP to sustain my weight. I ended up reintroducing walnuts and coconut milk and that has been enough to stabalize and maintain.

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for sharing! I am so glad you brought that up...I will say the volume of food I eat since starting AIP increased quite a bit. I also make sure I eat plenty of healthy fats every day. Coconut milk is AIP elimination phase compliant, and great to include for those of us who do well with coconut. So glad you were able to reintroduce walnuts! Hopefully you will be able to reintroduce more nuts and seeds, etc with time.

    • @Spooky.beepboop
      @Spooky.beepboop 4 роки тому

      Coconut milk is recommended on AIP, so you’re not breaking it by adding it. In fact, it’s considered highly nutrition dense with no interaction.

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому

      @@Spooky.beepboop Yes, I said above that coconut milk is allowed on AIP elimination phase. However, there are some people on the autoimmune protocol who do not tolerate coconut either at all or only in limited quantities.

    I have just started AIP after years of doing paleo but still having lots of digestive issues and thyroid problems. I think the hardest part for me is the anxiety over not being able to eat very many things...I have a history of eating disorders and the feeling of restriction tends to trigger me. I also would like to lose about 15 lbs but don’t want to try so hard to lose weight that I take away from the diet...any suggestions?

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому

      Hi there Joy! So I'd highly recommend working with an AIP coach or a nutritional therapy practitioner who specializes in AIP if possible, in addition to your medical team. I personally think it's important to be very mindful of your history of eating disorders when navigating any kind of healing diet. The goal of a healing protocol like AIP is to find relief from autoimmune symptoms, but if the protocol is causing stress and triggering you, it can do more harm and may even actually trigger more symptoms. So generally speaking, I find it's important to find someone who can professionally help and support you when there's a history of eating disorders and the AIP is triggering them. Sending you lots of love and support!

      @ShannaNemrow  2 роки тому

      Hi Naomi! So the elimination phase of the AIP generally lasts 30-90 days depending on the person. I was at my rock bottom when I started so I was on elimination phase for longer. Then I reintroduced many foods and today I have many reintroductions.

    Thank you so much for this video. I've been having such an incredible struggle trying to lose 15 pounds that I gained over the past year with Hashimoto's. I want to try the AIP diet but looking at it seems so daunting... I'm vegetarian and it seems like every source of vegetarian protein is a no-no. Do I start re-introducing meat?

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому +4

      You're welcome Emily! I'm so glad it's helpful! So a couple of things: #1 - you don't have to go all in on AIP at once. You can transition in stages as slowly as you need to. Also, I have a 30-day program if you help or support if you decide to go AIP. #2 - So if you are a vegetarian, I'd love to point you to Dr. Terry Wahls who used to be a vegetarian but transitioned to eating meat again due to her autoimmune disease/health. Her Wahls protocol has different levels and one of the levels does accommodate for vegetarians and could be helpful for you. The Wahls Protocol does have similarities to the AIP diet. Dr. Wahls has a great website and book - I actually have a UA-cam video where I interviewed her too. I love her! Let me know if you have any questions. Cheering you on!

    I had lost 35lbs on keto and plateaued. Then I got diagnosed with Hashimoto's and switched to AIP and stopped counting calories and carbs. I then just ate whatever was allowed and have lost 15lbs more with no exercise😀👍🏻 I believe preservatives and artificial sugars are my biggest triggers.

    • @ShannaNemrow
      @ShannaNemrow  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Chrissy! So I do not take any medications. When I was diagnosed over two years ago, my endocrinologist thought I'd need to be on medication shortly and told me to come back in a few months for testing. I changed my nutrition and lifestyle, and have gone back a number of times for testing. So far, I haven't needed medication. With that said, everyone is different. If I needed to take medication, I would take it. I'm not anti doctor. But I am a big proponent of nutrition and lifestyle as medicine too. I do recommend working closely with a functional medical doctor or your medical team, but there is such power in nutrition and lifestyle and mindset. It's not easy but it's worth it.

I highly recommend working with your medical team for lab work and testing, then beyond that if you've tried AIP or another healing protocol for 30-90 days and not seeing improvement, it can be helpful to troubleshoot with a functional medical doctor (ifm.org) or a nutritional therapy practitioner (I do offer remote one on one coaching if you are looking for someone).
