Making a Little Squiggle Wine Rack

  • This little squiggle is about 24" x 7" x 2" and made of solid ash. A master template was cut on the CNC to get the initial shape. From there, each piece is glued to together and flush trimmed from the previous piece. This extruded profile method can be used in a variety of ways, even if you don't have a CNC router handy.

    Probably too late, but you should consider making your own router table - Mike Farrington has an excellent design I built that is better than anything you could buy at a reasonable price, and makes me smile every time I use it. Great video!

      Not a bad idea. I’ve seen his table and it’s pretty solid. Along with most of his work! I just have an aversion to making stuff like that because it can take a while when my shop time is limited. But if I had just made it months ago I wouldn’t have to say that lol.

    Nice design. Perhaps I'll try the same design with glued wood laminate. I just don't trust that much router sticking out at me.

    You might have had better luck using a flush trim bit that has the bearing on the bottom, and a larger bit diameter. The angle of the cut on that murder-spear you were using is just too much, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was flexing dramatically being extended out so far and pushing on the top.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому +1

      I agree with every point! I wasn’t able to get enough support to prevent the flexing so the bit just kicked it away. And the larger diameter bit would be great too.

  • @robharrison285
    @robharrison285 4 роки тому +1

    Great project - love the creativity. There are bits that are well suited for the application - just look for compression or spiral flush trim bits. Some even have bearings on both the top and bottom and the spiral bits reduce tear out seen when you transition between grain directions - especially with such a hard wood as what you used. Very nice result.

  • @GeminiWoodworks

    I just had this exact problem with the 2" pattern trimming bit. I didn't have the option to cut my stock in half, so I used a bottom bearing flush trim to do half of the stock (it referenced the template), then I took the pattern off and used the 2" to reference the previously routed part to finish it off.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому +1

      That’s a great alternative! I need to get some of those monster flush trim bits everyone has these days!

    Nice work on that wine holder! I would have temporarily glued a piece of scrap wood to either end of your work piece that came up high enough for you to hold onto while running the piece across that router bit. That way you maintain control while keeping your fingers/hands well away from the routating bit. Just a suggestion...... 👍👍😉😉

    In the video it looks like the “bottom” of the squiggle act as the “feet”, is there any maring on your table/counter? Would stick on felt be necessary long term?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому

      I think there could be a little marring if the rack is super hard and table soft, but it shouldn’t be too big of a deal. Felt feet are a great idea, especially if you want to create a slight angle to keep the cork wet.

    • @parillaworks

    @parillaworks: Excellent work! I could also add, like previous commenters that you bring your fingers too close to the router bit but I'd probably be annoying. Speaking of fingers, what happened to your right thumb? It seems the nail took a hit..

    I get why you didn't use the CNC for cutting all the parts - but the waste could be drastically reduced if you had - so it's swings and roundabouts... More time using the router, or less money spent on the stock (and more time on sanding, etc.). It certainly ended up looking great.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому +2

      That’s a great point. I think an optimal approach would be cutting them pieces on the cnc oversized by 1/16” and routing flush after a glue up. Saves stock and makes sure everything is uniform. Thanks for the comment David.

    I'm glad that you decided to come back to this project rather than abandoning it altogether as the finished item is beautiful let alone functional!
    Bit surprised that you have a CNC machine but not a table router if anything I'd have thought the CNC would have been way more expensive to purchase!!!

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  4 роки тому

      The CNC purchase was a bit haphazard a few years back. Safe to say I would've done things a lot different if I could re-purchase everything in the shop.

    this made me cringe when your fingers were 1" from the bit especially when it gets to the end of the template. If you are going to do this use a spiral it!

    • @parillaworks

      Ya I got a little close but felt it necessary to provide support to the piece. I used a 1/4” spiral bit from Whiteside.

    Glad you didn’t just go with the cnc machine on the project. There are those who can’t afford a cnc and others who don’t wish to use one. At the beginning of the video when I saw you using one to cut out the pattern I almost clicked off the video, I’m glad I didn’t. Nice work.
