hellfire was unfairly removed, even if blizzard thought it was useless, having an extra button to aoe farm in low level areas was infact very fun and useful.
I remember back in the day doing ZG speedruns. 4 warlocks and 3 mages were a must. Hellfiring Jin'do and basically most of the trash. Playing horde for Wf and chain heals. Man what a great times.
It's good even for RP and class fantasy. Like other classes retain a ton of objectively useless, but still funny abilities (and some can even learn new ones, like mage's Illusion).
The saddest part of metamorphosis is that there was a lore justification for it to be in the game. Kanrethad Ebonlocke, the guy from the green fire questline, was amongst the heroes who assaulted Illidan in the Black Temple. Being a genius warlock, he was able to create an imitation of a demon hunter's metamorphosis just by witnessing it close and personal; later, he shared the knowledge amongst other warlocks. Also, I was expecting Fel Flame in the list.
I CANNOT believe you left out the most important function of Hellfire. Raid Leader: "Okay. Wipe." All the Warlocks vigorously Life Tapping then Hellfiring at low health to save on repairs. Dying to self damage didn't incur repairs. Now all we have is Burning Rush, and it turns itself off at low health and won't activate at all if you don't have enough health. Also, I make this comment whenever Metamorphosis is talked about: RP Demon Hunter: I'VE SACRIFICED EVERYTHING! WHAT HAVE YOU SACRIFICED?!? Warlock: Metamorphosis. You're welcome.
Absolutely this. I cant remember how many times the raid leader called for wipe and I did just that to save on the repair bill. Did it quite a few times raiding ToC.
Really surprised Kil'jaedan's Cunning, Mannoroth's Fury, and Dark Apotheosis aren't on here. Kil'jaedan's Cunning and Mannoroth's Fury were so OP that they had to both be quickly reworked shortly after release. Originally they were both passives, but they were far too strong, so Bliz turned them into spells with short duration, long cd, and reduced effect instead, which ended up killing them both and making Archimonde's Darkness the only viable choice. While Dark Apotheosis was just plain fun. Warlock Tank is something players have wanted to be an actual thing for years and years, and we even got an NPC bodyguard Lock tank in WoD. MoP was peak Warlock class and spec design. The level 75 Grimoires and level 90 talents all were cool, each spec having a different fitting resource was great, Dark Apotheosis was fun to toy around with, all the iconic abilities like Life Tap and Demon Armor were still there.
Dark Apotheosis was extremely fun! I remember leveling tanking Dungeons with my Warlock with some friends, we all had some weird build semi viable but it worked, tanking with my Lock and doing quest as melee half demon was so nice. For me Demon Hunter get some of that gameplay but this isn't as fun as the Warlock "melee" imo, I understand it wasn't viable for end content and mostly used for solo/quest but I had lot of fun with it nonetheless, especially figuring a build and rotation to Tank content with it.
Ah yes!!! KJc I remember how much fun it was even after the first few nerfs and it was just incinerate....it was still just an insane go to for almost any occasion.
Honorable mention from me would be they eye of killrogg minor talent that allowed you to place your demonic circle where your eye would be WITHOUT Line of Sight. I can understand why they removed it, but it was useful AF for running old raids/dungeons.
Not just that, but it was insanely useful for getting those Draenor treasures before flying. Could just send your eye out with its slow fall and slap a circle down wherever you needed to go.
In the old version of the game, life tap was invaluable. I remember being at the altar of damnation at level 70, I summoned the elemental demon, who had 369000 health. This is back when you had a few thousand health as a player. Health funnel - Drain life - life tap. meanwhile my pet was tanking the boss (i think i was using the voidwalker, he had better defense than the felguard). It took me many tries, cos that quest boss would enrage, but i eventually did it solo. And felt like a god.
Warlocks have the best theme in wow, devs always take from it just to regurgitate for 'new' ideas such as the infamous metamorphosis steal and now netherportal is gone there's no doubt a 'new' summoner class on the horizon... bliz can go to hell tbh
In Wrath, lifetap was also part of your rotation with the empowered life tap glyph to convert 20% of your spirit into spell power on top of the 30% from fel armor which gives a huge amount of spell power to demo locks to then give 10% of their own overall spell power to the raid through demonic pact. Being a demo warlock felt so good when you saw your buff just got so huge. I miss that part of life tap the most now going from Wrath Classic to Cata Classic.
@@wmen48and where did DH get their ability? Illidan. Where did he get it from? Demons. And what exactly do Warlocks control? Ah yes, *demons* DH are just lucky Bliz didn’t allow Control Demon to work on them, because we used to be able to enslave Metamorphosized Warlocks… 😈
You know whats insulting.....The Malevolence talent that gives you a partial design of the OG Metamorphosis is only available under Hellcaller which is only for Affliction and Destruction and not Demonology. Bahhhhhhh I want to strangle something.
I'll never forgive Blizzard for what they did to Demonology in Warlords.... Just omega-nerfing them because they *didnt want people to play it* before DH came out. Did they think we would forget the REAL meta? I hope it comes back some day (for demo) with the same ability-altering stuff, but maybe just with visible wings or similar to avoid too much overlap with DH.
I agree. It’s such a tease to see warlock NPCs pop Meta still. It’s also such a slap in the face to remove it for the sake of DH when they proceeded to completely ignore DH lore after Legion. They ruined my favorite spec for cheap fan service. Now we get constantly spawning annoying little imps as the core of our spec identity… _thanks, I hate it._
demo was still very fun in WoD despite the nerfs... it's a 3 dps spec class ofc 1 of them will be at any point weaker than the other 2 it was still incredibly fun to play and for the most part unless you're racing for world 1st it really really doesn't matter if you're gonna do 5% less dps or whatever than the other 2 specs. either way fuck blizzard for removing meta
And there used to be a glyph to make the floating Soul Shards into BElf fel orbs, that also orbited your character instead of sitting static above you.
Shadowflame exist in the game right now but only as a 70% Aoe slow for 6sec. and it have 15sec. Cooldown and its basicly the same animation of the old spell aswell.
Cataclysm version of dark intent. I used to use it on tanks all the time, it was probably one of the most subtle but useful ways to help tanks and. Just the way locks constantly heal. And the haste boost. It made it so valuable
I was expecting that to be number 2 before metamorphosis. I still miss that. It was even more fun because it was on a glyph, it felt like I was playing a secret fourth spec.
Fel flame - IIRC (and my memory is super hazy nowadays after a super long hiatus from WoW) it was our 'on-the-move' spell and would extend the duration of immolate at one point too.
Kil'jaeden's Cunning was one I was always fond of. It allowed you to cast while moving while at the same time reducing your movement speed by an x amount. It lasted about roughly 8 seconds, which moving at any speed, even if slowed, is better than being entirely still should the fight require you to move with out getting in the way of the last few seconds of a cast.
I absolutely called Metamorphosis being at the top spot before even clicking on the video. It's a shame Warlocks lost the ability, but at least it still lives on with the Demon Hunter class. I much prefer playing melee classes than ranged anyway.
Metamorphosis..... ahhh, noo stop... it hurts... i locked down in my subconscious the memory, the grief was too much! give me back.. GIVE ME BACK BLIZZAAAAAAARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in retail wotlk i played my alt druid heal in a lot of dungeons, so often the warlock wouldnt use life tap while he had hots on him, i rezz them, buff them give them hots and when there hp are full the hots make overheal and when the hots are done he starts to lifetap and fills his mana, instead of life tapping while my hots are on him
I watched this on my TV and came here to say, how did you make a top 10 removed abilities list and not have KJ cunning in place 1 or at the least 2. Green fire, arguably the best class quest ever, boss fight was built around the idea you had KJs cunning
in MoP there was also a glyph for warlocks I believe that gave you wings & certain abilites that made you more tanky as well. I cannot remember what it was atm, but it was one of the reasons i played warlock at the time.
Soul harvest was SO GOOD, especially mixed with life tap.. life tap near the end or after combat, and then soul harvest all your life back. Perfection.
The true No.1 Spell they removed was the old "malefic grasp" which was first added in the MoP prepatch and made Affi warlock way more fun Back in the days. Sadly it got removed by i guess Legion or WoD and build Into a super boring passive. I remember having full dots on targets, start malefic grasp channel and then watch the flying damage Text counts on the screen popping up by the hundreds. It was awesome 😢
Regarding number 7, it had another nice use in allowing the warlock to prevent the loss of durability on his equipment. Because you didn't loos durability if you died through the use of hellfire, if the wipe was inevitable, the warlock could use that to kill himself instead of dieing from enemies.
Sad not to see Dark pact/soul leech. Was in top 100 as destro dps for a TON of fights because instead of running things like burning rush, I just took dark pact, improved soul leech, and 3x of the prydaz azerite trait. I had a constantly refilling shield for around 2x my health bar which both saved the healers a ton of effort on progression, and also meant i could simply stand in a lot of smaller mechanics. Instead of trying to move faster to increase uptime, I simply didn't move at all!
Demonic Sacrifice: Voidwalker plus mana oil for your weapon made you unstoppable while levelling back in Vanilla. Run in dot everything, drain life. No downtime. Life Harvest was also a fun multitapping drain life

I havnt playede WoW since early legion, but still watch these vidos, and thus learn how Blizz really F-up one of my favorite classes. Life Tap and hellfire being removede makes no freakin sense to me, "oh, but hellfire was mostly a demo power and didnt fit their theme" You jave destruction RIGHT THERE, slap it on there, with maybe a slight rework, boom done. Life tap? Really Blizz, slight rework and it could have easily been kept, make it cost some health and boost your damage, or make your spell cast faster, any thing really, its wasnt callede "mana tap." But "life tap" aka the spend life gain power tap. And this NEEDS to be said, Metamorphis, while i slightly get why it was moved to DH, Blizz still choose to mess it up, taking an interresting set of powers, and a interresting buff, and turning it into a big "me do Biiig damage" cooldown just sucks. You COULD have taken it 1:1 given a diffrent coat of paint, and DH would be more interresting and Demo warlocks would maybe have been less hurt by it. BUT nah, DH gets to be a weird rouge/warrior hybrid and Demo-locks get stuck being the leader of imps, aka demo-locks are now just the kindergarden teacher of the legion.
I can't believe you didn't mention hellfire's most powerful effect. You could use it during raid wipes to kill yourself and not take durability damage. Always fun to see all the warlocks run into a corner and self immolate every time.
Started in Wotlk my first char I ever made was a lock. I remember being in undercity and seen for the first time a lock transform metamorphis and I was instantly hooked. I'm real mad they took that from locks. Talk about a big fvck up.
Looks like OPie - lets you make configurable wheels like that for anything you can put on hotbars. Basically, you can set it to appear while holding a hotkey, or toggle it with a kotkey, and even have sub-wheels, and you can put anything that could go in a hotbar spot into it - spells, mounts, items, etc. Really useful for cosmetic/collection chasers, since you can have a wheel with all your different Hearthstone toys, or all your fav mounts, or your random non-toy items in your bags like the Stave of Fur and Claw.

I can't believe you didn't mention hellfire's most powerful effect. You could use it during raid wipes to kill yourself and not take durability damage. Always fun to see all the warlocks run into a corner and self immolate every time.
I mean, Demonic Breath is kinda here right now? It just doesn’t do damage or extend dots.
What about that one spell that allowed the warlock to cast while walking?? That was wild!
Kil’Jaeden’s cunning
Shoutout my spells, castable Fel and Demon Armor and drain mana.
I also miss the multi target drain health
Miss that you can have inferno pet all time was so cool tank / aoe Dunge pet.
Or doomlord range pet.
I did not play Wow in a long time but my main was warlock for years!! No Fel demon armor, no lifetap, no METAMORPHOSIS , what happened to warlocks???
Good i really miss the old incinerate cast animation! 😢
All of 'em. Havent played since wrath, but locks are the best soooo yea.
I still miss Grimoire of Supremacy...
Do oldest abilities that are still in the game, unchanged next.
Started in Wotlk my first char I ever made was a lock. I remember being in undercity and seen for the first time a lock transform metamorphis and I was instantly hooked. I'm real mad they took that from locks. Talk about a big fvck up.
That’s the reason why I quit wow a lot of kool warlock abilities were pruned and class fantasy was not given to me as advertised.
I had no idea Life Tap was removed. Unforgivable and another reason I hate Blizzard now.
GIB THEM BACK
How is the removal of OG KJC not on here?
Shadowflame still exists, it is just a slow now and doesnt do any damage
Metamorphosis should be given back as a glyph at the very least. I miss my green meta
What is the mount wheel addon called seen in the thalkiel clip?
Looks like OPie - lets you make configurable wheels like that for anything you can put on hotbars.
Basically, you can set it to appear while holding a hotkey, or toggle it with a kotkey, and even have sub-wheels, and you can put anything that could go in a hotbar spot into it - spells, mounts, items, etc.
Really useful for cosmetic/collection chasers, since you can have a wheel with all your different Hearthstone toys, or all your fav mounts, or your random non-toy items in your bags like the Stave of Fur and Claw.
Glyph of Demon Hunting was almost a complete tank spec by itself but blizzard was too cowardly to commit to it.
Embers is still the destro resource though.
Shadowflame is a talent choice warlocks have right now. It's not removed.
GET OUT OF MY HEAD GETOUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD
Sadly Warlocks lost the ability to open the Dark Portal since warcraft 1.
Where's Blood Fear? :P
