So now I'm going to show you how to actually pin curl your hair. No matter if you have wavy hair or curly hair, you want to start on the top of the head so you won't get like tangled with the rest of the hair. So take a small section again. Comb the hair through. Put your finger around it, and just wrap it around into a curl. Using a small little metal clip. You will pin the curl into the roots.Take a small section again right underneath. Wrap the hair around your finger, and make your way down. So this is one way of doing the pin curl.
Another way would be to actually wrap the hair around the fingers and keep it flat against the scalp. So that way would give the effects of 1920 kind of wavy finger wave. When you keep it up like this it will give you a little bit more volume in the hair instead of being so flat. Its two different things but the razor will be a little bit different, but it is the same process of wrapping the hair around the fingers.
So once all the pin curls are in you can see everything is flat to the scalp. You will either put a little bit of hairspray and then heat it up with a hair dryer so you can heat it piece by piece. Heat it up. When its all heat up let it cool down. You can let it cool down for 10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour if you need to get dressed or do your makeup. Its plenty of time. When that's cooled down you just need to take it out and see the final results. So I just took the pin curl out, so this the result your going to get.
Of course it looks a little to set. So what we need to do is use a brush or a comb to actually break it to a little bit smoother wave. And forming waves which would give her a 1920's kind of wavy look. So you could actually tease some of the bottom hair and then slightly comb it. Once the pin curls are out use a comb or a brush to smooth the hair out and actually do a little bit of teasing underneath to give a little fullness into it. Then use your finger to create those waves. To give a little 1920 kind of look. This is very like red carpet kind of look.

My favourite part is the silent hairdryer...
don't think he turned it on.
Also the completely invisible hairspray
🤣🤣🤣
When people brush out their curls, they just look soft and gentle, but when I comb out curls, they just turn into a giant frizz ball. Help.
Aida Ines wide tooth comb or use your fingers, instead of a brush.
also, try using some shine spray or some hair oil to tame frizz and smooth the curl.
Have you tried putting a serum in your hair while its wet before curling? You could try a wet curl technique with smoothing serum and setting lotion.
Also, check and make sure youve gotten your split ends cut because that is a main frizz factor.
I will be sure to try that. Thank you:)
Aida Ines if you are pin curling your hair, there will almost always be frizz when you brush them out. Keep brushing through the frizz and brush the hair against your hand until the frizz disappears.
Aida Ines keep brushing... then start forming curls around your hand
Man this model made me uncomfortable, I felt the fire coming off her glare burning way deep into my soul.
marissa776, dang, I felt the same bloody thing, too!!! I kept thinking that she was thinking to herself, "I don't get PAID enough for THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I think its hawt ;D
She seemed hostile and unhappy, sort of a snotty person. I prefer someone less beautiful but not as "arrogant"acting.
Agreed
She’s clearly a fembot
I wonder what she is thinking while she's sitting there.
"Hold perfectly still. Don't move your head. Did I feed the cat today? I wonder what's for dinner? Oh right, salad. It's always salad. I hope he finishes my hair in time for my manicure. Or is it wax day? Mani or wax, mani or wax? Oh well, that's my agent's job. Oh damn, I did forget to feed the cat."
Nope. I think it's a series of "should I part my lips?" alternating with, "should I close my lips?" That's all.
+breza0o lol its always salad omg im crying
She looks very very nervous
I don't understand some of the negative comments. He did a good job and the model is also beautiful. I think this way is a better way of pin curl making for long hair .Most videos show you the rolling upward which is very difficult
He's saying 1920's. But I think he means 1930s-1940s
They also had finger waves dear
Shannyn Tyler 1920s hair trends were short dear.
1930’s and 40’s were long. Don’t be so damn condescending.
@@Amy_Dunn
I thought the 40's were short too because of marilyn monroe
@@N1sjsjsj I mean, when I say "short" I'm talking about pixie cut short.
@@Amy_Dunn
Ah ye flappers
Experienced hairdresser pin-curls hair that's already curly. That must have been difficult for him.
that's what I was thinking smh
lol
LOL!!
😂
I disagree. What would be the point in creating a video like that? He's got a reputation to maintain. His instructions are good. Pin curls are the ONLY sure way to can curl long straight hair successfully and last throughout the day. Rollers don't work, curling irons don't work. How do I know? I have long straight hair and have used this method many times with great results.
The model is beautiful but she look very uncomfortable lol 😂
He didn't ruin it when he brushed it out he made it look natural. It didn't look very nice after he took it out because the curls look exaggerated.
Noorah Allaoui but thats what we want right . If i did all my hair in pin curls no way i would just keep for 10 mins
she looks so done with him lmao
ok am I the only one who seen no spray come out that bottle?? lol
yeah haha
I love the look of pin curls! But I never comb or brush them out. I prefer the tight twist so I loosely run my fingers through to remove the definition of the split of the curl close to my head. They are a lot of work though!
But worth it as it doesn’t damage hair and lasts a bit longer for me
OK, HE DID A GOOD JOB ( BUT ) HER HAIR WAS ALREADY WAVEY !!!
Bless her little heart, she looks so uncomfortable! This is a pretty look. Separating the curls by hand would have been pretty also
I feel like the model here has a very neutral facial expression which is quite professional as she is not diverting attention away from the hairdresser. To everyone saying she looks "bitchy", that's just your biased interpretation of her (maybe you're intimidated by her?)
I know why she is making that face. the cameras are making her nervous. I can tell by the way she is looking at them. she's uncomfortable
no no maybe they force her I hate this man he knows only this type of curling hair
starry night then she has no business modeling
I think most of you are being overly critical. He showed us to pin curl ..
He did a good job. I didn’t notice the model acting rude. I was mostly paying attention to the technique he was using .
everyone on howcast seems to extremely suck at doing hair
When you have 2 educators teaching you crazy ways to do pin-curls and it’s this simple. Thank you for this demo!
Ok first of all, he did not spray the hair spray.Second of all the hair dryer was not on....
Thank you for this tutorial. Actually, I didn't think it looked 1920ish, I thought it looked very 1940's a la Veronica Lake. Either way, lovely.
This is what pin curls on long hair are meant to look like. Obviously the people saying negative things about it don't know about hair.
Allan Judge Agreed. Pin curls are typically meant to be combed through
true
i have extremely long hair and i do a tighter wet set pincurl so my hair looks quite different from the models. all beautiful I think though
Agreed, it's historically accurate.
Although they probably did wet set
I feel like it looks the same as when he started after he brushed it out
I loved the curls I might actually try it.
Not to b rude or anything, but they could have chosen a more polite model. Js
She got her hair done for free, so she needs to be nicer to the camera lol
This method holds my curls all week. I've had a few hair stylists curl my hair and only one did this method which worked best.
Am I the only one that thinks that the model looks like Lana Del Rey??
she definitely does.
+Linda Vidauri I thought of Candice Swanepoel, but she's like a combination of them both for me :)
literally just said to myself "holy lana del rey look alike..." hahahah
+Marta XYZ I love your pic :)
What. Lol
this was a really great video but its not 1920 style because the hair would have to be a very short bob cut. this is more hollywood style curls from the 1940s
He never said it was a 1920s style. He said if you wanted to do finger waves (1920s), the pin curls flat against the head are how you do it. The barrel pin curls create volume, which is the style he went with. He left a couple of flat pin curls in on the sides but didn't style it into finger waves.
She looks so pissed or she wants to throw up
Really interesting and so looking forward to doing it, however, completely distracted the whole time by the model who seemed to be suffering from bitchy resting face. She was either bored beyond sanity or really pissed at something or someone. If you're going to be modelling, make an effort to look at least mildly entertained.
Teresa Hanley That's true, but smiling/laughing is actually proven to help with longevity of life. So smile :)
am I seriously the only person whose hair would not hold that kind of curl, or any curl for that matter
***** heavy and thick?
No, thin, straight and a bit static :(
*****, I don't know. As a former beautician who only did ONE pincurl set in my entire life as a beautician, I think pin curls pretty much stay curled. I think, though, that if one's hair is long and heavy, that might create a problem with the pin curls staying curly or wavy. Short hair, don 't think there's a problem.
Long and heavy to the maxxx here. There is no hope. Maybe oiliness helps? Like not washing it a bit, but then that has it's drawbacks as well...
Lilyfloss yes. The only one in the world.
Weird how many people are commenting on the model's expression. Who tf cares? Is she supposed to be grinning insanely? That would be really off.
They are commenting because it was distracting.
The curls actually looked pretty before he combed it you should've just finger combed it
You could if you want an average curled look, but this is the traditional pin curl style.
nice
Roxanne Trevino it didnt look natural it looked stiff af
Just ruined it but brushing it out.
She looks like Lana del rey tho.
she looks like Lana Del ray or whatever her name is
I couldnt focus on the guy to trying to pin curl her hair , I was to busy laughing at the model giving him dirty looks lol
It’s really uncomfortable the way the model kept opening her mouth and staring around like she was on a bloomin Victoria’s Secret ad or something.
I like the finished look but her hair is already curly to start off with, makes the pin curls easier, on natural or damp hair is much harder
So this with setting lotion 🧴!! Nairobi! Or lotta body! See how her left side went flat. HE doesn’t know as a man, sorry not sorry but why do all that great FLAT pincurl and have it go flat.
I loved this tutorial! Every other tutorial needed a hair curler (which I don’t have) and for this one (clearly made by a professional) you only need a hairdryer, pins and hairspray, also is really short and straight forward, though I have to agree with the people in the comments that the model looks really hostile
The girl is hot and she knows it, hence the facial expression
It looked really pretty before he brushed it out
This guy did it without a curler. Such a boss. lol
Nice! I prefer the tighter pincurls that create the more classic look, this had a bit of a modern twist. Well executed either way!
Do people really think the curls looked good before the combing/brushing? Maybe if you wanna look like a kid doing pageants, but...
ikr
"No matter if you have wavy hair or curly hair..."
Me, with straight hair: Goddemmit.
Use some kind of product that will create and hold curl before rolling your hair. There's a bunch.
This would be far more useful if the stylist were doing their own hair. We need to see it from that perspective, not how to do someone else's.
I have been searching to try and find which direction to roll my pin curls. If I roll the ends downward, to the right, left, is there a technique to produce curls that will curl under, flipped over, towards the back, towards the front? I hope this makes sense, and hopefully someone can help me.
lol she looked so crazy but her hair is wonderful, he did a great job with those curls,
This is considered long hair? My hair is below my elbow. 😒
I thought the same thing - my hair is below tailbone but I was expecting waist length at least but TBH I should have known better. Still I like that he is rolling from the root and not the end.
He did an awesome job, I'm definitely doing this!
Very nice and easy. Would you also do the same with wet hair. I have curly hair but it's not tame...
The model was giving the camera a death stare 😐
I think he should of just combed it out with his fingers sometimes you lose a lot of the form when you comb it out. My hair is stick straight if I combed it out it would look straight unless I left it in for many hours with lots of hair spray.
Great look and tutorial! I sure wish I had as much hair as the model though. Her hair is gorgeous.
I like the it, it's awesome, but I think the girl don't like it. Does she know how to smile??
Alea Marie, I think it hurts her to smile and be nice. Some people are like that, I've found.
It's really a great method. I just have fine hair and it never lasts very long on me.
can we pincurl wet hair? and leave the pincurls in for a few hours? When I was little, they called it the Kiss Curl!
The stylist was awesome! The model has weird facial expressions, and that white haired person staring on was questionable. Models either smile or are plain faced, she was distracting.
i have a feeling she knows more about hair than he does tbh.
She looks like she doesn't wanna be there
it's really hard to see which direction he's wrapping the hair
You always want to pull the roots upward (opposite of the direction the hair will fall) to create volume, not down against the head.
It’s always best to blow dry it around a med size brush into a curl and take it straight from the brush and pin it just same all over head like this then spray and leave them for 10 mins to cool then brush out, for longevity u can warp hair into rollers and put under dryer the slower they dry the most longer will hold curl like say over night under heated hood machine for 20 mins with moose and brush out slowly with very wide tooth comb
All that work and her hair isnt curly
Olay i am about to do this now and sleep in over night. Thank you for showing this. Love you, good job!
I never get any informations from professionals as much as I do from regular youtubers
The models facial expressions got on my nerves🙄
The model looks so annoyed. If I ever made faces like she does, I wouldnt get work.
before: 0:22
After: 3:32
._.
Thus was all cool the curls were really pretty but maybe u should be more carful the lady seemed really not treated well she actually said bit** I was lip reading lol so don't pull hair😂😁✌👌👍👍
Y’all she was just trying to be fierce for the camera.... being fierce in a video without music is just awkward
I think it seems more like a 1950's look than a 1920's hairstyle
He never showed the 1920s finger waves. He was just pointing out that if you do pin curls flat against the head, you'll get what's needed to create finger waves, and if you want volume, like the style he actually showed, you'll want to do barrel pin curls, which create volume.
Hahaha that model didn't know WHAT to do. When he turned the chair she kept looking at the mirror. Then trying to look really seductive. That was funny.
hahaha I saw that
What happened?! Camera Came back and you did flat pin curls. The stand up curls in the beginning would been best for her.
More product. Nubian foam setting lotion.
Moose, spray each and let dry.
Her hair would be flat in now time from the weight.
This guy does excellent work. I do not like the cold fish model! Doesn’t look friendly at all! Ruins the whole video!
OMG he ruined it😭 it looked waaay better before
...never mind the cat or the salad.....did anyone else notice the hairspray bottle was empty as he was spraying it?
Reminds me of my Mama pincurling my hair when I was little. But she used bobby pins.
This is medium length. My hair is double the length and thickness. This is so much harder to even get 1 to stay
The model looks like she has an attitude problem 🙄 I think he did a very nice job with her hair
Is this long hair🤣are you kidding me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now why would the videographer be filming from the opposite side? 🤣
She (the model) is doing way too much here. She had one job, stare at the wall.
I don't get it... all that effort and her hair looks nearly the same afterward as before. And she has really thin hair, so it should take curls well. What about thicker hair that starts out straight? How do pin-curls work for that?
I do like the way he demonstrates the making of the pin-curls, though. Most tutorials I see suggest starting the roll at the bottom of the hair, which in practice is frustrating. I tried his way (holding the hair near the scalp and flipping the length around the fingers) and it worked really well. So that's good!
How about look at what he's doing instead of the model she was probably ready to go home
I did it with my fingers and my head looks like messy curls , i want to remive to see the result
the model looks from some angles like lana del rey in her lizzy grant era or her sister chuck
U should probably zoom in more on the hair as it is the subject of interest here. We don't really see what he's doing...
1. that is not how you pin curl
2. when he "took the pin curls out" really what he means is he heat styled her hair with a curler.
My mom always did ours wet then put us under a dryer. Whatever works 🎉
model had blood shot eyes... I don't think she was mad I think she was blowed....
Dear Howcast, please dont hire this girl anymore. thank you! sincerely a sincere person.
Are you kidding me? He's just following her natural (or pre curled) curl line.
1920s?just looked like beach waves!
Someone stop the model from smiling so much lol 😂 is she annoyed ?
how do u get it to stay after the brushing and teasing? just hairspray??
Her hair looks sort of similar from the start to the end ? It looks lovely but not a 1920's look I don't think
probably because he brushed it out too much and the style of curling is different. If you're referring to the 20's flapper hair they're finger waves and are set differently too
Thank you for this video!
lol did he actually even spray that hairspray
The model looks like she's hating it
I died at the worlds most silent hairspray, but jokes aside I really liked how it turned out, but I would've liked to know how long did it took him to put all those pins amd the model
